  1. While everyone has mentioned UNT’s investment in facilities as key to the AAC invite, I thought that it was interesting to see USF pointing to UNT as an example that it needs to follow. https://www.tampabay.com/sports/bulls/2021/10/22/what-usf-football-can-learn-from-this-round-of-aac-expansion/?fbclid=IwAR1m3AFDlfNTTlrCy0ZZFNplCTSTW9omYuesipNSz6PWapmsdRPizXRVlok

  4. There is no G5 program in the country that will fill 30,000 seats to watch a loser. Get the right guy in here and win games and you'll see the place full. The lack of interest is solely based on the quality of the product.

  6. Coaches are masters of this. He said a lot of words. But none of them were “I’m not taking the job at Texas Tech”. if he does stay at UTSA I hope they give him a massive raise and then completely implodes. Just so they know what that’s like.

  7. Was out shopping with my wife and saw a guy decked out in UNT stuff with a sweet battle flag hat. Thought it was him but threw up the claw and gave him a Go Mean Green. He asked if I was alum and I said yes and he said he coached there. I asked him if he was coach DeLong and we talked a bit about the team. Told him losing Hope was a big blow but he said he had a couple pitchers with live arms and is expecting a good team for the next 2-3 seasons. Also told him I hoped we could hang on to him and he said his family loved Denton so much, they decided to stay even after being contacted by a Big 12 school. Seemed like a down to earth guy. Really happy we have him as our Softball coach and gives me hope that Wren will make a similar impactful hire for football.

  8. We are sooo fortunate not to be land locked with expensive real estate surrounding us. We have plenty of land to expand and still maintain green areas! The past administration deserves credit!!!

  9. Never once have I had someone get confused when I said I went to (or now teach at) North Texas. If they're from this region, they know the only university that goes by "North Texas" is us. If they are not from this region, then they won't be confused because they don't even know that this area is referred to as "north" Texas. Considering that this area has a population bigger than 37 states, I don't see "North Texas" as being any less regional than, say, "Oklahoma" for a university name. "North Texas" has been part of our name for most of the university's existence. I see no reason to throw it out by going exclusively by the initials (and don't you want people to know what those initials stand for anyway, so you're right back at "North Texas" in the end). Just my two cents.

  11. Actually, Dodge had college coaching experience as he was our OC/QB coach when Mitch Maher was setting records. He is a great offensive mind and this hire could have been so good if RV would have limited who he could bring with him from SLC.

  14. Has he ever said anything different in these press conferences? Think we can just stop having these for the remainder of the year. I'm perfectly fine not hearing from mumbles until his farewell note at the end of the season.

  17. He's right though. Be competitive and people come. When we had momentum going the home Army game was great. Even the flame out game vs latech was great. There is a demand for UNT football to be good. People are just waiting on the supply.

  19. Hi Folks, I'm sorry I can't source this, but I have a contact in the Texas Tech AD. I was talking to him this morning through all the Matt Wells chaos. Unsolicited, he gave me some info on the upcoming UNT search. He said that while TTU is not interested in Joey McGuire (Baylor) because of his lack of coordinator experience, it is "well-known" that UNT has him at the top of its list should Littrell be let go as expected. UNT's other tier 1 candidate? Graham Harrell. I know that this will be met with skepticism by some, but that's ok. Are there more than these two coaches at the top of UNT's list? Probably. But, I thought you all would want to know. I know no one will be surprised by GH, but I thought McGuire was an interesting revelation. I haven't heard much chatter about him on this site.

  20. If we're trying to field top 50 or top 25 teams, we need to have top facilities. It's really as simple as that. And you already knew where I was going next. 😂 A ticket to basketball needs to be harder to come by than currently, and the venue needs to be smaller to amplify the sound and bring fans into the game. We have a real chance to advance our profile in the sport and as a school through basketball, and the new facility will be a major step. I just hope we don't get caught up in the desire to revive baseball. I want it eventually and will be an avid fan, but it's a dying sport and does nothing for our brand.

  21. We already have a basketball practice court in the Bonnie Brae complex. The volleyball arena isn’t ideal but at this point hardly a reason to build a new basketball arena in an inconvenient location for student attendance when a perfect fine one is already in place.

  22. Is recruiting our #1 problem? According to 247 our classes have ranked: 2018 #8 2019 #4 2020 #2 2021 #1 Seems to me our recruiting the past 3 years has been the best in CUSA. How do we get someone to get us better classes than #1 in the conference? This also highlights how a good coach can win big NEXT season. This is not a rebuild. *edit: something I thought of looking at those class rankings...that's another bullet point on selling this job to an established good coach. A coach that some think "no way we could get that guy." And also one that a coach can look past this "dead end job" and think "I will be the one to make UNT realize their potential." This new coach will be walking into: 1. top facilities 2. high end money/salaries 3. administrative support 4. upgraded conference 5. a room full of highly rated athletes already here 6. I can put those 5 things together and supplement with a few big time transfers and win IMMEDIATELY

  25. Nothing against Graham Harrell but I am not interested in a first time HC with FBS OC being their highest level of experience. Especially if they are from the Mike Leach coaching tree. The spread is the most popular offense in college football these days. I doubt any Mike Leach disciple is going to change this offense drastically in a positive fashion unless they are bring in better talent or are drastically better evaluators of the talent that might be hidden here currently. If we are going the Assitant route and want to get maximum reward and don’t mind the risk. Doug Belk is the guy. He is young for the position but just a little younger that Harrell. He is the best defensive coach in Texas right now that you might be able to hire. He would inject a lot of energy. And recruits serious about their future as defensive players would more likely come here. If we can get Phil Bennett to stay on with him and mentor/assist him in the head coaching responsibilities it would be a home run I think.

  26. The kill your fan base hiring pattern that you speak of was made famous by the prior AD. Hopefully, after examining our craptacular success during that reign of terror, we are going to follow a different pattern going forward.

  32. He's also coaching at a G5 school in a half empty stadium. The perks of SMU might be enough to make him pass on the Texas Tech job, but he won't stay forever.

  33. I have no insight into Sonny's mindset b/c when its your alma mater and your dad was a coaching legend it makes for a compelling set of circumstances to leave. I will say that he's got a pretty sweet gig at SMU. Top 20 program. The premiere transfer destination for Texas kids looking to come home and get a great undergrad degree or get their MBA. Landing multiple 4 star high school recruits. Making $3.5M living in the most posh zip code in the state with young kids going to HPISD. Stress level is very low. No one is putting "For Sale" signs in your yard at SMU if you have a bit of a down year and go 6-6. Tech fans will expect results if they are going to pay Sonny $5M a year (and I do think that's where the conversation starts). I certainly hope he stays for obvious reasons.

  34. Agree. For as disastrous as Dodge’s tenure was, the amazing thing is he was almost certainly the right hire. North Texas football could be in a completely different position right now if, as you said, the administration mandated he leave his guys in Southlake and hire a real college staff.

  36. What bad news. Not to get any of us old timers started, but the parade used to be such a big deal. There were at least 20 high school bands participating as well as a few service bands. The parade started at about 10 am and made its way from Ave E to the square via Hickory and then once around the square. After the parade, the various departments and schools had their open houses. Kick-off was about 2 pm and following the loss game, there was a big concert with the university symphony featuring some B list artist. Great memories.

  37. I think it’s possible to eventually be what UTSA has become in Denton, as the university’s commitment to athletics has changed, just as Denton as a college town has changed. More people live on campus or near it and actually stay in town on the weekend.

  38. He may not relish the idea of remaining at La. Tech with an independent schedule.

  39. Nobody ever contacted me about having the parade or not. There has always been a decent crowd….it could be bigger, but not if we are not consistent. Regarding the waste/trash…that is part of the whole thing. We have a crew to clean up. You can ask the Greeks to participate as far as community service…which all do. Have the pledges on the clean up crew. this is a crock!!!

  40. I can confirm this. And I like the idea. He has been the assistant HC under 2 great coaches at Baylor. Helped guide 2 complete rebuilds into top 20 teams. He turned down the UTSA Head job 2 years ago (I was very close to this process) hoping to be named the Baylor head coach. He also turned down a Carolina Panthers, UT, OU and Tech job to stay at Baylor under Aranda. McGuire was inducted into the THSCA Hall of fame this past summer and is extremely well liked by HS coaches. He is the lead recruiter for Baylor on their big targets. He would be a much stronger choice than some of the names I've seen listed on here. But my opinion carries no weight except that I know several of them personally. I know Wren and Rhoades (Baylor AD) are very close. I don't have any real skin in the fight as I am just a UNT t-shirt fan (my parents both graduated from there back in the late 50's) but I root hard for them every weekend.
