  1. You really think that Dr. Smatresk is going to publicize NT's desire to change leagues when he is the current Chair of the CUSA board? You can be sure he is pursuing all avenues that would benefit UNT.

  2. He's talking as the Chair of the Board of Directors, not as the President of UNT.
    23 points
  3. I think the opposite. Looks like he is trying to water the grass where he is currently at just in case a move to another conference isn't made while still pursuing other opportunities for UNT. As the chair of a conference, it's a bad look if you are openly telling said conference you are looking to leave with the school you are the current President of.

  4. Alright, so I created a burner account/name to post this because I think it's very important in regards to not just this situation, but a LOT of situations similar to this. We need to address abuse, mental health, and how to recover on a topic like this. I'm a well known poster on this board, several years here, adamant Mean Green guy (Even if I'm not the biggest SL fan, still a Green fan). Domestic violence and you: a dissertation regarding what can and could be As a victim (and yes, men can be victims) of domestic violence, this is something that is very difficult to put into words. I sent my wife to jail about 1 1/2 years ago because she repeatedly hit me, attacked me with a knife (yes, very literally), and threatened my life. Sure, I figured I could stand up to it and take the hits. Not the point, NO ONE should deal with this, no matter how bad a husband you may be accused to be, or actually be. What's the point though? One bad day. We had one bad day. That's what it takes. We had just had a miscarriage. pandemic forced me to work from home, in each others bubbles 24/7. we had been drinking maybe too much. Whatever the combination, we had one bad day. It's not an excuse, just a bunch of reasons. I believe justice should be swift, harsh, and punishing. You never want to repeat that. If something bad happens, you end it NOW! So, what remains now? Well, we are now trying for our third kid (after another miscarriage). We don't drink. Over a year in marriage and mental health counseling. We are probably more in love than we have been in nearly 10 years. Things are better and can be. We are not the normal result. This doesn't have to end your life. But if you don't change from it, it can and maybe should. I'm not saying we should be quick to forgive, to reconcile, or anything. Be hard, be harsh. But recognize that we as humans don't have to stay that way. So how does this all apply? Simpson should (and will be) punished. But he needs to be given a chance to repair, reconcile, and rehabilitate IF he's willing to put in an insane amount of work. It's not black and white. I wish it were, but there's a million shades of gray. So before we judge so swiftly, just remember: It takes just one bad day. Not acceptable, but I truly hope he see's this as an eye opener to repair and improve himself, and move forward with a better life. (Happy to discuss more directly with anyone who likes)

  9. Bingo. Two different roles. Same thing applies to you & me when we're busting our butt at work (this letter)... but keeping Indeed bookmark'd (calling Craig Thompson & other MWC member Presidents daily).

  10. This is such small-time thinking. First... for now. Second... there is absolutely buzz that MWC is looking to expand into Texas. Third...Please read and understand this. Fourth...Travel costs would be slightly higher (not much, because NT happens to be right next to DFW Airport so flying from DFW -> DEN costs just as much, maybe even less than, DFW -> BHM), but that's what the payout increases are for! Media rights definitely going down for AAC. No argument there... Probably still going to be around $750K-$1mil/school. What do you think is going to happen to C-USA's $400k/school deal? Going up? Who's deal would this new conference look more like? I'll give you a hint, it's not the higher paying one. You can't really quantify the prestige & eyes-on NT athletics would get on the national stage playing in MWC though. Stop relying on other schools coming to Apogee to fill the stands. If we could just friggin WIN, our own fans will fill the stands. I promise. DFW is a bandwagon town, and there are tons of NT alumni waiting for their school to become a winner. I guarantee you, if NT happened to get ranked (much more attainable winning in the MWC than C-USA or whatever this new thing would be), Apogee would finally get it's sellout. Again, IF this mashup of schools were to happen, the C-USA schools would love it. The AAC schools would hate it. It would be very ideal for NT, ONLY IF A MOVE TO MWC DOESN'T HAPPEN. And honestly, I would put NT's chances of joining the MWC slightly higher than the AAC agreeing to this proposal.

  12. The person I was talking to essentially said that Simpson's absence has nothing to do with Covid and that was it. I guess my original thought was it was grade related but then he was involved in spring practice, and thinking grades would have excluded him then as well, I started wondering if it was behavioral. I don't know, but I do know I really expected him to step up this year and it hasn't happened. Now we will never know because he made a really stupid mistake. For his sake, I hope he gets squared away and puts this behind him.

  16. Because a regional conference makes sense. The AAC is going to take a media rights hit and adding 4 teams won't make a big enough difference. So it makes more sense to regionalize, get similar money to what the new AAC was going to get and significantly lower your travel cost and possibly increase your home attendance numbers.

  18. People see "San Antonio" and think possibilities. When they dig a little deeper it gets murky. It comes down to how much they value the SA market. I think as fans we get more caught up in the "hot" programs (what hap if "X" leaves) whereas hopefully the Presidents are digging deeper.

  19. What is the objective of posting this? Let the legal process playout and NT make a decision on his offer status. Good example of guilty till proven innocent. If there is any question, I am confident he will not be playing for NT.

  25. You can’t make someone want you in their circle…the AAC doesn’t want two DFW teams. The MWC thought they were gonna get Big XII Texas teams. Now, they look at what’s left and don’t want anyone. Getting a school that doesn’t average 20k in attendance doesn’t catch anyone’s attention. Then follow up with a program that had averaged 4 wins a year since 1995. Look, I’ve wanted MWC membership since 2011 when TCU left. It stings that they don’t want us and we aren’t able to do anything to change that mindset. What NS is trying to do with Judy is to get regional realignment—but they know the AAC schools aren’t biting, but the SBC will. This is the best hope we have now.

  27. These types of cases are not like your petty weed charges. The START as a Class A Misdemeanor, and go up. If he choked her, its an automatic felony. The fact that she went to the hospital, means there were obvious injuries. And if there is any evidence that there was domestic violence, its an automatic arrest. I hope he can straighten his life out, but as far s this case goes, he's probably screwed.

  28. The three conferences—Sun Belt, AAC and C-USA—are separated by their television deals. The AAC distributes around $6 million annually in TV revenue compared to about $500,000 in the Sun Belt and C-USA. However, industry experts expect the loss of Houston, UCF and Cincinnati—three of the biggest G5 names—to adversely impact the American’s ESPN TV deal, decreasing distribution substantially. Of course it will. The "AAC makes more TV money" is a dying argument because it won't be soon. There will be less financial reason to be in the AAC. ESPN is not going to pay the AAC a bunch of money without the schools that make the AAC good. The name of a conference means nothing. AAC is not the AAC as we know it in a few years.

  31. The new regionalization plan. First there is no invite to the MWC. Second there are no signs of the MWC conference expanding into the Central Time Zone. Third, we tired the Big West it was a failure. Fourth, the travel times and costs don't make any sense. Now for the depleted AAC. Why would we pay exits fess and buy in fees for a conference which media rights about get tanked? Why pick up the added travel costs and times to go the east coast? What is the prestige of the depleted AAC to sell to recruits. The regionalized plan is the CUSA we wanted to get into 15 years ago. The regional plan is exactly the places we recruit, Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. I'll take the smaller footprint means savings and a better chances for the visiting team to help fill the seats. Our fans are more likely to travel to New Orleans and Memphis than any games on the East Coast.

  35. I think something that might help us is there are honestly no programs in CUSA or the Belt that come close, at least presently. to what the AAC is losing. The "star" programs in the MWC seem like they would rather hold off for a P5 invite. I think people are putting a lot more emphasis on football than these conference might be. They cannot be thinking short-term. They needs to look at the overall developments within athletic departments over the past 6+ years and where is honestly looks like they are headed. If you adding based on "hot" teams look at programs like Costal, Louisiana, and UTSA. You have to think what happens if their current HC leaves? What is their infrastructure and are they progressing. If the presidents are making additions based on "rah-rah" and not sound business plans then they are not doing their jobs.

  37. If it’s only about money to get into the Big 12, I’m sure SMU already has that in place. They don’t sit around over at the Hilltop with such matter$.
    3 points
  38. Right. But do they expect the next deal to drop all the way to the C-USA/SBC levels of payouts? If so, then this merger thing is the only "option B". Again, if I'm SMU/Memphis, I'm pissed and putting everything I have into convincing the Big12 to take me out of this hole. Option A for NT needs to be MWC, because even though their payouts will likely go down, I doubt it comes down to $400k/$500k level like where we currently are.
