  1. I can't disagree more. We need games like Texas State--they are in state competition we recruit against and that is a team we have a ton of history with from way back when. Looking down on them is nothing different than what SMU and UH do to us, yet both still play us

  2. Even if SMU and Houston stayed in the AAC, it's still a G5 conference. How much easier would it be to convince your friends and family to see East Carolina and Tulsa on a back to back? After arriving at UNT as a student in 1988 I've seen us go from "Literally anything, anything!!!!!, is better than Division I-AA" to "Literally anything, anything!!!!!, is better than the Sun Belt" to "Literally anything, anything!!!!!, is better than Conference USA." If a spot opened for us in the AAC it would probably be because SMU, Houston and other schools left the conference and we'd soon be "Literally anything, anything!!!!!, is better than the AAC". As a UNT fan I'm done waiting for the stars to align and for the ancient wrong of not getting a Southwest Conference invitation in the 1970s to be made right. My previous school UT-Arlington killed football entirely in 1985. UNT plays in the FBS, has a sweet stadium and we dumped Eppy for Scrappy. I'll just enjoy wherever we play and get some pleasure from watching the big schools betray their longtime conference mates and destroy conferences and rivalries.

  4. This. Just accept that we aren’t ever going to be in a conference with SMU or UH, much less Tech, Baylor, or TCU. Our conference sucks balls, but our conference divisional setup now is the best we have ever had. We play three other Texas schools that are FBS—we also play La Tech, USM, and UAB in our division, all of whom have accomplished a lot, much more than we ever have. We can either enjoy the setup we have or you can walk away, just like the other 98% of the UNT Family. This setup isn’t the SLC, Big West, or SBC, where we had our closest conference games in Eastern Arkansas, Monroe, Louisiana, or Lafayette, Louisiana

  5. Not a fan of the grass end zones and watching kids slide or roll down the grass during the game...I'm sure the kids love it, but it just screams small time football to me. If you want to do something other than the wing (or is it a tail?), then come up with something interesting and unique and not just what a bunch of other stadiums have done.

  6. Move #7 all the way to the top for me...for sure the single most important question mark. I'm optimistic they'll improve enough for our record to be better, but will they be good enough to get us 3+ more wins? Excited to find out.

  7. Definitely. Mccasland’s going to allow players to do what they do best on the court and that has worked great. May not have established stars like Hamlet, Gibson, or Woolridge but I’m confident this will be the deepest Mccasland team and think Rubin will step into that go-to role well.

  8. We have to expect that all of the returning players are going to get better than last year. Like you're saying, we can't expect anyone to be on Javion's level, and I doubt anyone is at Zach's level. So losing those two hurts pretty bad. And I would say Reese was last year's team's heart, so losing him may hurt more than we know. But if Ousmane ups his game (biggest step is between Freshman-Sophomore years, right?), and Wright comes in a little better than what we got from Deng, we're gonna be OK replacing Zach. If Rubin can create for himself while Drez and Bell get better... plus we add some solid outside depth, I don't see a reason why NT can't compete for another conference championship. Who knows, one of the new guys may surprise us (When we landed Javion, I certainly wasn't thinking he was going to win C-USA B-ball POY & Male Athlete of the Year, especially with Bassey in the same league)! It's just going to look different.

  11. Just found this video. The Beyond the Green series was the first & most comprehensive video on UNT’s IPF, but AD Wren Baker sheds a bit more light & (perhaps) new information for some in this newer one.

  12. Well fall camp starts this week, and I'm fairly excited. I have to tamper my excitement and expectations at times though... Some points that should be interesting in the next few weeks: 1. Which freshmen stands out 2. Who starts; Aune or Ruder 3. Who makes the most impact; Adaway or Torrey 4. Does McCrae evolve into the DE we thought he would be 5. Can Shorter become WR1 after last year 6. Who has the best chance to break out 7. Does Bennett's new system work Feel free to add more below and discus

  13. 1. I think Gabe Blair is our starting left guard this season. 2. Aune game 1, but I think he’ll be erratic at some point early in the season and open the door for Ruder and he won’t look back. Feel confident both will be above average starting CUSA QBs when they are on the field. 3. Adaway. By a lot. Torrey splitting out to the slot when we are in 11 personnel and the defense is situated accordingly, only to have to put an LB on him when he splits out should help us get more of those short-yardage pass plays instead of so many incompletions like last year. Adaway will be the feature guy and his size/speed combo gives him a chance to be special at this level. 4. No because it sounds like Mccrae is a 3-tech defensive tackle now. Was starting there in the spring and is now almost 280 according to his Twitter. We’ll see if he can hold that spot down next to Novil but I expect him there this season, not at defensive end. 5. Sure, just seems like we have so much talent at receiver I’m not concerned who the number 1 guy is. Tommy Bush had 36 P5 offers out of high school, Bryson Jackson had 20, Caleb Johnson had 10, Detraveon Brown had 3 and Loronzo Thompson had 2 and those guys are our 3rd-7th receivers. There’s just so much talent at receiver we don’t have to rely on any one guy being at a certain level. 6. Adaway or Murphy twins. All 3 showed all CUSA potential and head into the year with experience they lacked heading into last season. Gaddie is another candidate. Lot of talent and he has experience at safety instead of switching there mid season. 7. Yes but mainly because we are just so much better personnel wise than we were heading into last season. A LOT of 1st year players last season who now have a year of starting experience, only one starter lost, plus 5 D1 transfers, 4 of them being full-year starters at their previous school. Just like receiver, we aren’t sunk if a guy underwhelms. We have a lot of options of guys who are experienced and talented.

  14. Texas State is in the FBS and is the fifth-largest university in Texas by attendance. San Marcos is a four-hour drive. This seems like a pretty good home-and-home to me.

  15. I was skeptical but after watching the attached video I am a believer. He is a GREAT shooter. I just don't get how he flew so low under the radar at 6-4 with that stroke. There is clearly more to the story here.

  17. I don't thank SMU is keeping NT out of the AAC. I don't see a team in that conference that would embrace NT's membership. Sports is a business, and no one wants to help their competition. NT to move up in conferences must become a program that other teams can benefit by including them. NT's biggest issue IMO, is their own alumni who dismiss NT has a viable athletic program. I know a lot of sports fans who graduated from NT, only to become ardent supporters of another program like A&M or UT.

  18. I’ve been of this opinion for years. Good, bad, or indifferent, stick with the SOW so that when people see it, they know it’s UNT. I’m not opposed to the “wings” look that is commonplace now, but I prefer the SOW because that’s what should identify us.

  19. Well Coach Dowling, guy who recruited him, has landed the likes of Hamlet, Reese, McBride, among others. I’m not doing backflips that we landed him, but I’m not mad. Reem has proved that he can recruit his ass off.

  20. At this point we have nowhere to go. Assume the BIG 12 at some point grabs at least 4 AAC programs,{SMU not being one of them} the AAC reloads from CUSA and the BELT , leaving UNT behind. Also I don't know why the MWC would reach out to the state of Texas for G5 programs since its slim pickings with UNT,UTEP,UTSA, Texas State, and Rice.

  21. I like the game. Might as well make a conference out of Texas University's and attempt to market it as such as a league for marketing and recruiting purposes. UNT SMU UH TTECH UTSA TX STATE RICE UTEP TCU Baylor Where do I sign?

  22. You want as many easy-drive and in-state games as you can get for recruiting purposes, and to build your fanbase. There are a lot of UNT grads in the I35 corridor in central Texas. It's long-term program building (in my opinion) to play as many in-state games as possible. Now, I'm not saying UNT should play Texas teams home/home to the exclusion of bigger name visiting programs. I'm saying you want to have a balance of bigger-name schools mixed in with Texas-based teams in your OOC schedule, because it's easier for alumni, and it gets the name out there in the recruiting areas. Secondly, UNT and TSU have a pretty long history of playing each other. Why would the schools not want to continue that, and maximize it? UNT needs as many regional rivals as possible. TSU fans--at least some--will travel to UNT for a game. It's a no-brainer to play them regularly, as far as I'm concerned. Fun trip, too.

  23. It's been 7+ years since our program last went to Austin. Do you not like Austin? IMO San Marcos is like Denton with some South Texas vibes, minus the gameday blowouts. Unless it's changed.

  24. San Marcos used to be a fun place to visit. Now it is just an extension of Austin. See no benefit at all playing this school.

  25. Just about every team now plays with 3 guards starting. More start 4 guards than the old traditional lineup of two. I won't be surprised to see a lot of four guard play with Bell the other player. The key is having great rebounders at the guard position like Hamlet and Reese. Wright come across as somewhat of a malcontent on the internet. I don't think McC would mess with him if he didn't think he could be a starter. Of course, with McC; you better have a good attitude and play defense first. As far as Zephir being under the radar, that is easy when you don't even start at the juco level. Obviously, McC saw something and I would be surprised if he doesn't start.

  27. @MeanGreenTexan Ousmane is a strong contender for player who steps up in to the star role.
    3 points
  28. Always interesting to talk under this umbrella, IMO. What makes a title run: Depth? Having that one star who can pull the team over the hump? Up front, it looks like we traded the star (Javion) for some solid depth. But the optimist in me says someone is gonna step up this coming season, I just don't know who it would be. If that happens, we have best of both worlds. Lastly, Grant has established trust. I think he'll figure out how to make this work.

  29. I would hold off on judging this until we know more about the CFB landscape. Could be vastly different in a couple years. Currently, the gap between them and us is not nearly as big as the gap between us and P5. Some would argue they are our equal right now. Regardless, it's a fantastic regional opponent no matter what conference/level the schools are in. Take away branding, and IMO this is light years better than Waco and Lubbock.

  30. No problem playing Texas State, but I like their just announced future non-conference schedule better than ours.

  31. 🏳 Check Mary Hardin-Baylor’s future schedule openings, too, while we’re getting all Texas warm, cozy & neighborly. Do a BYU home & home & see Apogee for the first time need extra seats to handle all the DFW area Mormons & our fans who’d see the ultimate value of such a matchup. Army home & home? That is a national game no matter how you slice it. It was also fun the last time they were at Apogee when we won with a last minute field goal. Seems some of the New York media were here covering the game, too? Follow the TCU model pre-Big 12 when they removed themselves from all the rest of the Texas sludge & went rogue. It really worked out well for them until UT & OU decided to go super-elitists. 👎👎

  32. I mean I see the benefits. Playing a Texas school, some place our alumni can travel (you live in Temple, I better see you there lol). Maybe we tried to shoot our shot with Ok State, Arizona and it wasnt there.

  33. Totally agree on all of that. Mike was the best example of a smaller SF type player. I just love that we have so much talent, and that we are having conversations of who starts over who. I have all my faith in what Mac will implement this off-season going into the regular season. He has so many weapons now, I don’t see why we can’t be a top dog again in the conference.

  34. I think either Browne or Perry start. If I had to guess I’d say Perry. McBride, Jones, Bell, and Wright can be penciled in. That 5th guy isn’t going to be Abou. Abou is good but he’s not good enough to change Mccasland’s scheme and move Bell out of position just to fit Abou in the lineup. Bell is gonna play the 4 where he has been the best fit for what Mccasland wants in a 4 and we didn’t bring in a 3-year starter at Washington to come off the bench so that puts Abou on the bench. I think you’re looking through things in the old lens. I noticed this last time you thought it was crazy to consider Rubin Jones a small forward. Those old position classifications are fairly outdated by now, especially with regards to how Mccasland runs things. Mike Miller was 6’3” and started for us at the 4 during the CBI run and the entire next season. Nothing about his game says “Power Forward” but that was technically the position he played, by the old classifications. Which is why it doesn’t really make sense to view things through that lens. Similarly, Mardrez McBride and Rubin Jones are guards. McBride is more of an off-ball guard and Jones is more of a combo guard who can handle the ball and initiate offense or play off the ball effectively. If Browne or Perry start, and McBride and Jones are starting too, none of them are “small forwards.” It’s just a three-guard lineup like Mccasland has always run. Abou was solid but we need to take a step back and look at things without a North Texas perspective. Abou averaged 2.9 points and 2.2 rebounds while Wright is a 3-year High Major starter and former top 100 national recruit who was in the transfer portal looking for a bigger role. I said this when we got Deng Geu and people were thinking he’d come off the bench. You land these type of senior/grad transfers because you can offer them a starting spot. These guys want to make the most of their last season of eligibility, not come off the bench.

  35. Question, if Texas A&M can't keep Texas and OU from SEC, then how can SMU keep NT out of AAC? Do they have more than one vote or a veto? Getting tired of hearing this argument, the AAC is not the SWC. So, go ahead experts what is the process for AAC adding a team and how is it so different from SEC? Thanks

  36. I know the scouting report mentions that Zephir would be a great 1/2, but 24/7 had a quote from Dowling that indicates that Zephir could play the 1-4. Maybe Zephir could be an all around 6th man? They obviously recruited him with the bench in mind.

  37. In my eyes: PG: Jones, Perry, Browne SG: McBride, Murray, Browne/Zephir SF: Bell, Miah, Stone PF: Wright, Scott/Stone Center: Ousmane, Morgan Any thoughts? I think guard position is the best we’ve had in years. So much talent

  38. Every time people complain about someone calling us by the wrong name or not knowing much about us I think of how many times we have changed designs and the many variations of helmets. PICK SOMETHING AND STAY WITH IT. Maybe have an alternate for special occasions but stop with the changes.

  39. These concept helmet/uniforms articles really grind my gears. Maybe 1 out of 10 us usable. Pretty graphics =/= usable outfits. And most are just downright hideous enough for SMU to actually use

  40. Did you see where the Buffalo Bills have mentioned moving to Austin among other possible destinations ? The threat of a move is because the Bills are unhappy with their home stadium. The Texas Longhorns have apparently met fire with fire as they have been in discussions contemplating a move to Buffalo, New York in an effort to make the SEC a more regional conference. if Buffalo moves and the Longhorns stay, Austin would be the smallest market in the US with two professional football teams.

  44. Great efforts by both guys. I realize from seeing that Carlos had a +7....he must have really fallen apart on the back nine. Because he was still in contention for a medal....about mid-way through his round. Carlos had a great first Olympics though...as he was in contention all four days. My guess is....when he got a little out of contention....his heart was just no longer really in it....hence the +7. But think about it this way.....the top 3 spots are all that matter....so 42nd is in the same boat as the guy who finished 4th. Sebastian obviously really did make his mark.....as he battled in the playoff for the bronze. These guys both represent their countries so well....and they both represent UNT so well. I wish the Ath. Dept. would try to have them up here for a meet and greet......if somehow possible.
