  1. To be honest the bar was extremely low. Helwig was a disaster, so RV came in and did some good things, but then reached his ceiling and everything stagnated. The decision to not let Dodge retain college coaches hurt and then the hiring of Stephens, Benford, and McCarney sealed his fate

  2. Yes they were real program changers… Dont get me wrong, glad we made those bowls, but that minor bowl game didn’t mean our facilities were not sub par and department desperately underfunded.

  3. Been explained by someone, but there is an injury (medical red shirt), Covid, and maybe a "traditional" red shirt. In the mix. When he first announced I joked that if he stays 4 years they might be announcing the starting QB as Dr. Ruder PS - He did just Graduate from UNC

  4. Aune, the one QB to take starter’s snaps last season, is the front runner going into a Fall camp where the talented transfer you brought in hasn’t yet had a chance to compete? Hmmm, now that’s a real blockbuster headline.

  7. One way to look at it: We gave up as many points in 4 qtrs and 7 OTs as we now give up in the 1st qtr.

  8. Rick accomplished some good things. He also made multiple program-destroying hires. Rick would have been fine at smaller school but was completely out of place running a major athletic program.

  12. I’ll just assume they left the part out about sending a ponzi-scheme email out to donors that was meant for his family. You know, the “forward this to twenty people and win a gift card” scheme that a ten year old knows is BS. That was a eye-opening email to get from the AD. But hey, we only kept him around for twelve more years after that. Edit- Voting this post with a “RV” is the second goddamn funniest thing this week.

  13. Last years team “without” this Falls portals, transfers & HS true frosh might have finished 112 or worse, but other than Phil Steele & (maybe) DCTF, how many of all the other Summer college FB magazines are going to have the slightest clue as to what North Texas will do if none of them incorporated all the new faces into this 2021 team? Tough summer for many Summer College FB magazines, too.

  14. RV=Apogee Stadium. Really, a modern day miracle if you think about our entire school’s culture back then. Yet it happened under his watch & leadership. Wren Baker recognized RV & said as much at Mean Joe Greene’s statue unveiling ceremony. It was a great day for the Mean Green Nation. ❇️🦅❇️

  15. It’s so perfectly North Texas that our Hayden Fry ranked teams couldn’t go to a bowl while 3 of our losing teams got bowl berths for winning 5 games…

  17. It is amazing what good lighting can do to a space. Not sure what's above the ceiling tiles, but take those out and paint whatever is exposed up there black. That and some better accent lighting would do wonders for the space.

  19. My prediction is that we are no less than third in the CUSA West. I believe that the offense will be =/> than last year. Aune will show some improvement over last year when he was one of the best in the country. He was 26th in the nation in passing rating in spite of only a 55% completion average. While losing our best receiver in our history, he is being replaced by the highest rated (247 combined) receiver in our history and another who originally had a combined rating of .8812 when coming out of high school. We return outstanding receiver Deonte Simpson and a healthy Jy'aire Shorter. The defense will be vastly improved because they couldn't be worse than last year. First, we have a real Defensive Coordinator who has had success at that position. Second, we will have a four-man line which will deter double-teaming Dion Novil and give the improving Murphy twins, McCrae, Enoch Jackson and others a chance to contribute. Linebacking will be improved as last year's starters return and the emergence of Jordan Brown and Jacobi Johnson. Special teams will be improved as Mooney returns to 2019 form. Rodriguez is an effective rugby style punter and a traditional punter is on the way. Coverage teams should be better as that was the specialty of several transfers. The most valuable improvement will come from the coaches and the spirit of those that are transferring in. They are winners and will give their best effort.

  20. May 23 was one of those sleepy Mondays when nothing particularly interesting was expected. The last games of 2015-16 had been played, classes were out, the parking lots were deserted, graduation was done, and a quiet emptiness had settled over the campus. The only thing out of the ordinary was an email telling everyone in the athletic department to report to the team meeting room at 9:40 a.m. That Monday morning's revelation that Rick Villarreal was stepping down as North Texas' athletic director came as shock to everyone in the room. I knew retirement was on his mind, and had spoken with him briefly on the subject. It was something he was clearly planning for his near future. Nevertheless, Villarreal's emotional announcement turned the day upside down, and left the staff in stunned silence. Monday, June 20, was Rick's last day as the Mean Green's AD. But before North Texas turns the page and president Neal Smatresk embarks in earnest on the task of finding a successor, it seems appropriate to address a question: What is the legacy of Rick Villarreal? read more: https://meangreensports.com/news/2016/6/20/Examining_The_Legacy_Of_Rick_Villarreal.aspx

  23. Correct: 2018 season - True Freshman. Played less than four games before being injured, therefore was eligible for traditional redshirt. 2019 season - Redshirt Freshman. Played less than four games before being injured, so he applied for a hardship waiver. The NCAA granted it, as they almost always do, for missing the majority of two separate seasons due to injury. 2020 season - Redshirt Freshman take two. Every player’s eligibility was frozen for the 2020 season, therefore every player’s 2021 eligibility is the same as their 2020 eligibility. May 2021 - Graduates college at end of third year of college. 2021 season - Redshirt Freshman take three.

  25. For most of the last 50 years of following all this the best 2 words I could come up with (until recently) was “squandered opportunities.” I transferred here from the Golden Gulf Coast (Alvin JUCO) hoping we would emulate UH’s program since there were so many similarities with both metro schools. Well, in 5+ decades we didn’t do any emulatin’, but I think all the pieces are in place now to where we could start. We just can’t let Wren Baker get away. He still has (IMO) at least one major athletic venue to build & to put that one adjacent to Apogee Stadium. If “In Wren We Trust” hasn’t already, I truly wish he would go sit in the former Fry-era MG player Mattress Mac’s executive office & just ask him to finish the project he started with the AC. (Yes, I know the history about MM’s initial donation). Yet the worst thing the Houston philanthropist & its main Mattress Man could say to WB is no, but I’d wager our AD would not give up if he initially said no. 🦅

  34. Apogee is greatness--don't care if anyone else thinks their's is better, either. None of them had to endure decades of football games played in a toilet of a stadium, with the best seats being 33 yards away from the field and directly behind the team in front of you. Fouts to Apogee was going from a skateboard to a Lamborghini...
