  1. The key that I think is being overlooked is that McCasland is the best head basketball coach in the league. He has brought this set of players together for a reason. I don't think he recruited transfers to be backups or role players. I definitely do not agree with the thought that NT will start 3 bigs. Possible, but unlikely based on prior McCasland's NT lineups and that would be highly unusual in today's game. Coming close to last year's team is going to be very difficult. Hamlet is IMO in the top 5 that I have seen play for NT, in the Kenneth Lyons, Joe Hamilton category. Replacing his ability is highly unlikely. Plus the underrated Simmons, who was far from flashy, but could play well against any other centers. Assuming McCasland's usual nightmare oc schedule, NT will struggle early; but by conference; they should again battle WKU for the championship.

  2. You are discussing extensions, the real issue is whether he will keep his job. Yes, 7+ wins would probably mean a new contract, at NT or somewhere else. Less than 5 wins and a contract buyout and termination may happen. Five to six wins and probably nothing happens. I maybe drinking the green kool aid, but I think NT has the intra-structure, location and budget to be dominant in CUSA football. Mediocre seasons should not be tolerated.

  4. Only two options unless we go 0-fer. He has a great year and gets hired away. Otherwise, he will be here a minimum of two more years. I hope he is successful and has a long, great career at UNT. Anyone catch the show on ESPN about Coach K called "The Class That Saved Coach K"? He was basically a .500 coach prior to the class of Johnny Dawkins, Jay Bilas, Mark Alarie, David Henderson and Weldon Williams. His record since then is incredible. Hope SL has found his class.

  5. Its been a long time since I have seen a coach who literally has hit the crossroads of his career as a head coach at this level. Anything can happen to him after this upcoming season...he could be fired, he could be extended, he could get to come back for one more year (with everything on the line again), or he could conceivably have an incredible year and get hired away. Here's the look at each possibility: To get hired away, we would have to have an incredible season--like 9+ wins, a division title, and a conference championship/bowl win--to get P5s to think he has really found the touch again and is a bright offensive mind. Obviously, the chances of this happening seem incredibly remote, but they are possible because CUSA is unpredictable and SL may have a few tricks under his sleeve with this roster. To get extended, basically SL needs to win 7+ games and that probably has to include winning something of importance (division title, conference title, or bowl win), again, that seems unlikely with this schedule and the questions at QB and the new coordinators, as well as the questions we still have on the defense. To get fired, it would seem like anything under 5 wins would be an automatic trigger here. Seems very likely, but hopeful that SL doesn't have to endure this because we achieve a higher amount of success. Also, see below... To stay for another year, that would be completely about saving $1.3 million dollars in buyout money, which would be able to get this down to a manageable buyout if its just one season. We have bought out a higher amount to get rid of McCarney after the PSU debacle on Homecoming, so its kind of out there that we will buy out a contract...but its also at a university that is traditionally known to hold off on big money decisions until they become "affordable". This also seems possible, but I think SL has to win 4-6 games to stay without an extension and have one final year to make it happen. Obviously, it will be very interesting to see where and how this plays out...

  12. Keep in mind Simmons never even averaged in the 28-32 minute range, although he came close a couple times. We have 80 minutes a game to distribute to our 4 and 5 positions. Bell and Wright are probably gonna push for 28-30 minutes themselves so if Abou can give us 20, that’s all of our 4 and 5 minutes. That’s how Mccasland has done it the past two seasons. 3 posts splitting the 80 minutes. This past season in tournament play it was Bell, Simmons, and Ousmane with a little bit of Mykell Robinson and the previous season it was Geu, Simmons, and Bell. Another guy for depth would be nice but Bell, Wright, and Ousmane splitting the 80 minutes seems like a pretty solid group on paper.

  13. Correct. Seth has had very good recruiting classes the past two years. If he leaves, with the ease and popularity of the portal, we could have quite a few players take off

  14. I think with 4-5 wins Seth gets one more year. The Bennett hire is a 2 year deal and his recruiting has been outstanding. If Rudder is as good as advertised I could see us bowling! GMG

  15. I agree. He provided valuable minutes in the Purdue win as well.

  16. I think he can. He lost a lot of weight going into last season, and I can imagine he is the main piece they are working on. CUSA has a lot of good big men like Lofton and Jimmison from UAB. He had good moments last year with his limited playing time, but I feel like he got enough experience to get the starting job and run with it. They'll be put to the test in non conference again, so we should be able to see early on how well this team can play together, and if Abou and newer players can fit the role. Zach left some tough shoes to fill…

  18. I have to say College Football is the most exciting and North Texas had it going on. I am from Dallas and so Denton was not that far. You could walk to the stadium and it was packed. One day I was walking down the sidewalk and a car pulled up. It was Henry. Sorry to say a lot of us smoked and he said get in and lit my cigarette and we became friends. It was safe to do that back then. Henry was always fun and super nice to me. I was 17 in college and he was 4 1/2 yrs older. NTSU was so much fun.

  20. 8. North Texas: Former New York Yankees minor-leaguer Austin Aune performed well in a platoon role with dual-threat option Jason Bean, who transferred to Kansas during the offseason. Aune will turn 28 two days after the season opener against Northwestern State, so it’s very much now or never for the former three-star recruit. Jace Ruder will arrive from North Carolina in the Fall and has an opportunity to unseat Aune. A four-star prospect coming out of high school, Ruder has the size (6-3, 225) and talent to be an excellent player. Littrell has intimated that he won’t use a two-quarterback system again in 2021, so one of these players will take the job. 22. Simmons always played his best against the elite players, mainly recently. Had one of his best games of his career against Dayton and National Player of the Year Obi Toppin last year. I feel like Abou has a bigger upside than Zach had early on though, if he can get his free throws in order. But I do think Bell isn’t as much of a big man. He’s 6’6 and is probably the most versatile player on the team, I would say having him in Reese’s old spot and gradually getting taller in the lineup is a better way to go.

  24. It really is all up to Wren. If Wren is happy and can settle for ending up at North Texas Seth may retire here. If Wren is wanting to move up the AD food chain he will fire Littrell for another mediocre season. I tend to think it is somewhere in between. I seriously doubt Phil Bennett decided to come out of retirement only to be be shown the door along with Littrell after this season. My spidey sense says that he has two more years and the pressure to win comes hard in 2022.

  25. SL has been AWOL on the defensive side of the ball. If its not fixed with B than he has no idea about having a D, therefore, we will never win a bowl or W division with him at the helm. He has to recruit and coach too both ways...

  28. Four of us, all NTSU students, were headed to New Orleans one particular weekend for Mardi Gras and had to pick up one guy at the Quads. Somehow we encountered Mr. Holland in a not so friendly way. I think we blocked his car and he couldn’t get out. The details are fuzzy. Henry wasn’t real friendly and things we’re not looking too good. Fortunately, one of our guys was a smooth talker and knew Henry. It was all good and we drove off to begin our road trip to N.O. Honestly, I was scared schitless! I’ll always remember what a great player Henry Holland was. A real warrior.

  30. Its a typo, if you look at the actual headstone it shows Henry was born in 1944. No, I did not know him. I've followed NTSU/ UNT since 1974 & this is the first time I've heard the tragic story of Henry.

  33. Exactly. Go to win, There were 4 dorms at the Quads. 1 and 2 were girls and 3 and 4 were guys mostly the athletes. Henry always came by to visit me out on the lawn. I was just a freshman. Joe Greens thighs were bigger than my waist ! We had the best players. Ron Miller on the basketball team was unbelievable. He was the star and was not too tall !!

  34. I like this starting five, but wonder if there is enough outside shooting to satisfy McCasland’s offense. I really hope Abou steps up and can play around 28-32 minutes a game, but am not convinced until I see it. Taking that into consideration, I would expect the last spot to go to a big.

  35. The biggest hole I see is still at Center. From what little video I've see of this Wright kid is that he is more of your stretch 4 at a generous 220 lbs. This team needs physical bodies to match up against Kenneth Lofton of La Tech (6-7. 275) and others within the conference; that gave this team fits. Abou Ousmane is only good for 18-20 minutes tops. I also feel that Rasheed Browne is your starting point guard; in the mold of a Ryan Woolridge. I can see him and Madea (Tylor Perry) on the court at the same time. Had my fingers crossed for the Smu transfer (Yor Anei) that the team has looked at. Thin as well but blocks everything in the middle at 6-10 1/2 that transfered to SMU from Ok St.

  36. this assumes everyone stays healthy. Sept. 4 Northwestern State - UNT wins along the 41-14 lines, we get a clear picture of Ruder’s abilities to lead the offense Sept. 11 at SMU - SMU sucks and I’ll never ever predict that they beat us. 77-0 mean green for reigning 2021 NBA champion Luka. Sept. 18 UAB* - UAB stands for U Are Booty. Mean green win 35-10. Sept. 25 at Louisiana Tech* - We owe them one for 2018, best UNT game I’ve ever been to. 87-17 UNT. Oct. 2 Bye - I don’t know who Bye is but it’s Pride month so I’ll say they give us a good run. UNT 24 Bye 13. Oct. 9 at Missouri - Seth gets another SEC win and Kansas State gives him another offer, because that’s what good people do, they give second chances. UNT 55 Ozark 14. Oct. 16 Marshall* - The Thundering Turd. UNT by 50. Oct. 23 Liberty - it’s a good thing Hugh Freeze can coach from a hospital bed because we’re gonna kick his butt!!! UNT 7 Liberty 6 Oct. 30 at Rice* - they had 8 chances to score at the goal line and we stopped them all 8 lmaoooooo unt 63 rice 20 Nov. 6 at Southern Miss* - Now this one I can see being tough. Hattiesburg is just a tough road environment and USM is getting better. USM 38 UNT 13. Nov. 13 UTEP* - UTake this football and UGet tackled! UNT 44 UTEP 24. Nov. 20 at FIU* - Miami is a literal sinking cesspool. Seth jumps up and down in the end zone to put the field at a slight tilt that gives us a huge downfield advantage. 55-20 good guys. Nov. 27 UTSA* - UNT 1528372826282 UTSA 0 and we celebrate at KFC. Phil Bennett does a sick Buckethead impression as we ride into the night

  42. I read somewhere few days ago where they were related. “Pancho & Lefty” was composed by Townes Van Zandt just outside the Denton city limits in August of 1972. Texas Monthly(?) had a feature article on the writing of that song which SUMG made me aware of about a year ago. Best country video ever IMHO. ❇️🦅❇️

  44. Perry is 5’10”. Hard for me to envision him as a wing. But I could definitely see Browne starting, but I think he’d start over Perry instead of Jones. I think Jones is a big part of the plan. If I had to put money on who the leading scorer would be I’d go with Jones at the moment.

  45. Can someone else who follows the NFL tell me, is it typical to see this much praise for 4th/5th rounders? I am inclined to take this as "coach speak", but was wondering what others thought. Others who see a bigger picture.
    1 point
  46. ---No, except for a bowl that Grambling was involved in (black colleges). This is one the big reasons we did not get any bowl invitations in that era... very few bowls and secondly often the sponsors and locations of the bowls wanted teams that would bring lots of fans...(economic reasons). The top ten were pretty much guaranteed a bowl... also in that era Notre Dame did not attend Bowl games and the Pac-10 and Big Ten only sent one team each.... to the Rose Bowl. Because of the lack of BIG TV money and no national TV cable networks it was a different world in sports. Most Bowl games involved a lot of Southern Teams as the list shows. [Arizona was a WAC member at this time, not Pac-10]
