  1. Phil Bennett confirmed on David Smoak radio show former SMU DC Jim Gush will be new linebacker coach at North Texas. great addition. Ton of experience and juco connections Galen Scott will not be returning

  8. Bean was fun to watch and boy is he fast. You can’t compare him to Lamar Jackson though, because Bean has ZERO elusiveness. Bean never could earn the starting QB job in high school and he couldn’t hold on to it at North Texas. How much would having a real QB coach to learn from and build a relationship with have helped Bean this season. I don’t really see Bean as a FBS starter but will be interested to see how his career unfolds. I have a suspicion we have already seen it’s peak.

  9. Hope the kid finds what he’s looking for. But his body language when he was taken out of games was HORRIBLE. edit: before anyone views this as me dogging the kid, I actually like Bean a lot. Super dynamic and could be a good QB with more work. And 18-22 year old me would be pissed if I was taken out of a game too. It was just an observation and not something you want from the leader of the offense.

  13. I thought he had potential. He needed to be utilized to his skillset IMO. naked boots to strong side HB crossing through the LOS for easy dump offs and likes. Just very high % throws while moving the pocket. That's not really SL's philosophy though. SL is from the pool of coaches that wants a shotgun pocket passers that reads the defense pre-snap and knows who "should" be getting the ball before he snaps it. That's not Bean's skillset and that's OK. Bean should find a place to go and has a shot to be very good.

  14. We don't need a dominant defense at all. We simply need a good defense.

  17. I didn't say Bean's skills would change. I'm saying his numbers would skyrocket. Yes, I can compare the two when we're talking about Rich Rod's zone-read offense (I believe Rich Rod runs something like 2/3 of the time statistically... and 1/3 of those running plays, it's the QB running). He'd have a ton more carries. Heck, if you take out the UTEP game where Bean was in for 1 fumbled snap, he ran for over 350yds (at 6.4yds/carry!) & 5 TDs, in 7 games... IN AN AIR RAID SYSTEM! And he was only in for 1/2 (or less) of a lot of those games. Everyone was saying Lamar was going to have to move to WR in the NFL (a lot like folks around here said Bean would have to move to WR here). If he can find the right fit, he'll be just fine. I wish him the best.

  18. I don't understand so many that seem to think losing Bean is no big deal or it even makes the team better. Too many QB's, so it is good to get rid of one of two experienced ones. More concerned with how he looked on the sideline or how he played in high school, than they are losing a very good QB. Aune and Beam QB's ratings were actually close, Aune 148.38, Ben 144.97 The difference is that Bean rushed for 346 yards at a 6.2 ypc versus Aune at 29 yards and 1.1 ypc Those that think Littrell wants a more stay in the pocket passer, might considered if that was the case why did he play Bean so much last year.

  19. Guessing he must not have liked what he heard about where he stood heading into spring. Working in 6 scholarship QBs and getting them all reps was going to be a challenge. 5 still will be a challenge but the path seems a little more clear.

  21. He has turned down multiple P5 offers since he stepped away from the game. He even let Oregon slip in the interview. Some of the offers were for more than what our HC makes. I truly believe he is coming back for several reason. 1) He truly thinks the world of Seth and knows his potential 2) Missed the game of football 3) Thinks we are just a good defense away from taking the next step. And he believes he can get us there Hearing him talk I believe he will not only help Seth by improving his defense. But also help him develop in to an even better coach.

  22. If Coach Bennett plans to run this scheme, I'm good with it. If he "plans" to blitz a S or CB on every play...I'm REALLY good with it!

  23. I'm pumped, Seth and Wren made a hell of a hire again. Listening to the podcast with Bennett told me everything I needed to know. Guy energy is still there, other P5 programs wanted him but we got him. We are an attractive program for so many things. If we could consistently win we could be a monster. Let's get some dudes in here on defense and kick ass next year

  24. I knew he wasn't going to stay committed to us when he kept popping up at all these camps around the country and saying how he was happy to be there and this school offered him. He definitely thinks he is better than G5. Nothing wrong with believing in yourself, but if you think you are better than G5, then don't commit and then back out last minute. I would not want him here even if he asked. My opinion is good riddance. I don't want someone who only comes to me after everyone else has turned him down. I am not your rebound.

  25. This dude would likely have been the new featured WR in an offense that just had its’ featured WR lead the country in TDs, earn All-American honors and be a high projected NFL draft pick. I don’t get it.

  26. Anybody else notice all the guys transferring out seem to only be thanking Coach Womack by name? Seems like a petty dig at Littrell or maybe I'm just reading too much into it

  28. I think some people need to consider that SL and Co. didn't make much of an effort to design more plays suitable for him. Just my 0.02.

  29. Never viewed as a qb. Had more potential at receiver with his speed. I wonder if this means Amani is looking good?
    4 points
  30. Very bad news. I think Bean was the best QB NT had. Very few players anywhere and at any position have that kind of speed. Plus, Aune IMO is not the answer. He is a good backup, but if he is the best NT has; it is going to be a long year.

  31. I could be wrong, but under NCAA rules I believe once a player request into the portal the school is under no requirement to maintain financial support. https://lasvegassun.com/news/2019/may/06/how-does-the-ncaa-transfer-portal-work/

  32. I hope this means we're moving away from our "two-qb" scheme... lmao. Also curious who wants him/where he would want to go

  33. You lost me at coalesce. Seriously, great summary. I have clearly been one to hope SL succeeds here and have never believed that he had one foot out the door or had mailed it in after the flirtations with Kansas State, because I think he has more character than that. It has been obvious to me from how he conducts himself and I appreciate that in a coach. This was obviously important and a reason that Bennett took the job. We have good people running our program and I believe Baker and Littrell won't waiver from their expectations that we can do this the right way.

  34. He referenced in one of his segments how excited he was when they beat Texas and referenced to his team how none of them were offered by texas. Seems he knows how to "coach-up" talent.

  35. He's coaching because he wants to, not because he has to. He said he wouldn't come back for any other coach than Seth.

  36. It sounds like PB will have full run on the Defensive side of the ball. Yes, Seth is still in charge and will oversee everything, but Bennett will be making the X's & O's decisions. I think will reinforce seth staying the OC. Will be interesting to see what happens at QB coach.

  38. Hiring 3 of the assistants coaches at Baylor during the sexual assault scandal and tying our program to that is something I am not particularly happy about, but I really hope Littrell and Baker did a very thorough job vetting them. I’m sure this will get down-voted plenty and that’s fine, but I challenge those of you to actually read up on the scandal instead of just dismissing and feeling miffed about merely brining it up. My takeaway is the failure in that situation really occurred at the top, with university officials and Mccaw and Briles, and after that it’s pretty unclear, like at the assistant coach level. There was definitely plausible deniability for guys like Bennett and Gush, and I hope that’s the reality as well. But at our level I hope proper vetting was done. From hearing Bennett speak, it sounds like Littrell really admired Bennett and convinced him on taking the job and convinced Wren on offering it. It obviously took a while, so hopefully that time was used to vet him, admiration aside. Same for Gush.

  40. Was nice to hear him talk about the hiring process and what helped bring him out of retirement. We can say we have a commitment to winning, but to hear him talk about the university’s commitment to winning is great to hear. My only concern is the extent of his “list of things” he briefly dances around about 3 ½ mins in. One thing he mentions is that when he’s not in season, he wants to be at home. I hope this isn’t a 1 foot in, 1 foot out kind of situation.

  43. He frustrated me. He can frustrate somebody else. He had flashes of greatness, but overshadowed by drops, in my book. Hopefully he can be more consistent somewhere else for someone not on our schedule.

  44. May have to wait a little while. He had one under the "Coach Bennett ASU" handle. Surely North Texas will get him a new one if he can't remember his password.

  45. Not sure why he failed at smu. smu has had 6 sub-.500 seasons since Bennet left. Some people are better coordinators than Head Coaches. Perhaps this is the case for him. Seems to have still been well thought of since then as a DC. Seems like one of the the that has helped other since Bennett left was smu changing the admissions standards to "legally" allow more players in back in 2010 and Dykes doing a good job with transfers.
