  1. Idk why this board is obsessed with making “why didn’t we offer?!” posts any time a Texas kid has a great game. Maybe they don’t project him well to college? Staff has had a great eye for RB talent lately. Maybe the kid flat out told them don’t waste their time? Point is, you don’t know the situation so coming here to passive aggressively complain is getting old

  2. Are we arguing about recruiting? Because I think they’ve earned the benefit of the doubt in that department. Back to back to back top 5 classes in the conference. And in the RB room specifically? They’re so deep they can’t even play every player that deserves to be in the field. So yeah, I’d argue that section of the program is working fine.

  3. UPDATE: - Added SL's Buyout (TheColonyEagle Suggestion) - Increased Sumlin's base salary in Years One and Two (Mean Green Matt Suggestion) *Updates in Green Just wanted to get some thoughts on the following deal, I think it would be worth exploring, take Sumlin's Arizona years out of the mix, six winning seasons at Texas A&M, success as a HC at Houston, success as OC at Oklahoma and I think it's worth looking at going after Kevin Sumlin right now to replace SL. There's a unique reason that also should be considered with the timing and language in Sumlin's buyout at Arizona and I've laid that out below. Hire Kevin Sumlin: Structuring the Deal (Steal) of the Century Preface: SL Buyout is 30% of his base salary for each year remaining on his contract through 2023, here's how a deal with Kevin Sumlin could look, considering his current buyout situation in Arizona: 1) Arizona is on the hook for $7.29mil for the next two years with any money made by Sumlin subtracted from the amount owed to him from Arizona (Info in linked here) It's safe to assume Kevin Sumlin knows there's no job waiting for him to make anywhere close to $7.29mil over the next two years - but UNT could be the perfect place at the perfect time. 2) Backload a 5 year contract for Kevin Sumlin Year One: $1 (Arizona Still Paying Sumiln minus the $1 earned at UNT) $250,000 Year Two: $1 (Arizona Still Paying Sumiln minus the $1 earned at UNT) $250,000 Year Three: $1.5mil Year Four: $1.5mil Year Five: $2mil 3) What Sumlin's take home pay looks like Years One and Two: $500,000 from UNT and $7.29mil From Arizona (Minus $2) $6.79mil From Arizona Year Three: $1.5mil Year Four: $1.5mil Year Five: $2mil Total Over Five Years: $12.29mil Yearly Average: $2.26mil 4) Out of Pocket Cost to UNT To Sumlin Years One and Two: $2 (Yes, $2 even, not a typo) $500,000 Year Three: $1.5mil Year Four: $1.5mil Year Five: $2mil Five Years: $5mil $5.5mil Yearly Average: $1mil $1.2mil SL Buyout Current contract calls for 30% of base salary for remaining years (3 years at $1.35mil base) (Info link here) Year One (And Total of SL Buyout): $1.215mil SUMLIN + SL OVER FIVE YEARS: $6.715mil YEARLY AVERAGE OVER FIVE YEARS: $1.343mil By back loading his contract, you get a proven winner in the SEC (Beat a #1 Ranked 'Bama team while he was at A&M, and coached a Heisman winner, never had a losing season as a HC in the SEC). You could list a lot of reasons that qualify him from his time at A&M, Houston, and OU, if you're willing to look past his Arizona tenure. I just think now would be a perfect time to strike with all of these considerations as well as the financial implications for UNT (Saving money with huge hire), at the end of the day, this would be the best job Sumlin could get and I think he'd be a perfect fit - to say nothing of the fact that this works out for him making an average of $2.26mil/year for five years to be the HC at UNT! Thoughts?

  4. He officially surpassed Dunbar in career scrimmage yards in their NFL careers. We haven’t had a skill player have this much success in the NFL since Ericc Pegram in the 90s, I believe. He’s representing us tremendously.

  5. I’d prefer Scott Frost or Tom Herman when they lose their respective jobs. The timing on their exits and Seth’s might just coincide perfectly. Until then I wish Seth and the team success. I still think there is hope for a recovery. But if we struggle in 21 it’s over for SL and Scott and Tom might just be available. GMG

  6. Since this Georgia State/WKU is about the 5th bowl game this year where a Sun Belt team is beating the brakes off of a CUSA team, we are officially in the worst conference in college football (and our defense STILL can’t stop anyone).

  8. There’s no proven path of hiring a new coach but the track record of a G5 hiring a retread on his way down is abysmal. There may be a small bump but it usually goes off a cliff pretty quick. Hmmm, there’s a name in (our) recent history but it escape me....

  9. You can’t really get away with the $1 salary gimmick. His contract almost certainly has language for reasonableness built in. The game can be played, but not to that extent.

  10. Another big run for Wilson. Best game of his NFL career. Now at 17 carries for 144 yards with a long of 34 yards.

  11. And for stats that back me up, this is our rushing breakdown, which is 13th in total rushing yards in the NATION: So forgive me for not losing sleep over who the staff decides to offer or not.

  12. Conference success = money. The computer ratings of the G5 leagues determines CFP distribution of money. Success influences the interest of casual viewers and TV interest A conference is an equity partnership. In the real world a partner failing to carry their weight eventually gets ousted. MWC exists because a group of partners in WAC got sick of the partners not carrying their weight. Big 8 was born of disgruntled Missouri Valley partners. SEC and ACC come from disgruntled Southern Conference partners. Boise got special revenue sharing to get them back in the partnership. Texas and OU to keep them. Always in a team’s best interest for partners to be successful outside of league play.

  15. When we have limited number of scholarships each year and we have a stud RS Freshman returning along with two other very good freshman and Siggers returning and Jackson coming on board while our defense is in a state of shambles, your concern is a RB from Trinity?

  16. 🤔Have we all run out of things to during this cursed pandemic?😊 Now trying to hire someone for a position that is not open?😆 I think Seth needs to win 6 to stay, but if he wins 5 I think those who hire & fire (& some of that group are now MP (Money People) will let him stay & build a program with the fine talent of his last 3 recruiting classes. At 5 wins he’ll probably have to fire a coordinator or 2, though. Guess he’s the underdog on this forum, but I’m trying to feel like I did about him when SL had 2 straight “9” win seasons in a row. We all know the deficiencies, but I’d wager Littrell does to & will try to correct them beginning with that anemic defense. 🦅❇️🦅GMG! ♦️PS: I did like what Sumlin was doing at UH, though.

  17. I don’t know Rob..... SMU seems to be doing fairly well with their retread. Hell Even Bobby Petrino did well at WKU. Hugh Freeze, well see about Willie Taggert at FAU but I don’t want to play them..... I hear you on the falling off the cliff but I would just like to get up on the cliff. We’ve never been there from a national level We’ve never had a 10 win season. Never been ranked (in modern football) Winning the HOD bowl in front of 50 UNLV fans was nice but it wasn’t the top of the cliff. I don’t know if I would list Dan McCarney(if that’s who you’re referring to) he didn’t have success at the G5 level as a HC. He had success in the big 12 and “couldn’t believe how small we were” when he got here. He didn’t know anything about coaching a G5. I think Sumlin would be a home run hire. We’ve done the P5 assistant thing, former P5 HC thing, high school thing....we haven’t done the former successful G5 HC thing yet. Let’s give it a shot. I would just like to get to the top of the cliff before talking about falling off of it. When you’re on the bottom there’s no where to fall.

  18. Just as an aside, I went to the First Responders Bowl yesterday (free tickets for being a first responder, otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered). While in the beer line (wearing my North Texas gear) a guy from ULL looks at me and says “Mean Green huh? That’s in Denton, right?” I said, “Yeah, we used to be in a conference together” He looked at me and said “Until you guys thought you were leaving for a better conference”

  19. it hurts to watch these two teams. We have such a crap show going on here in Denton. CC two years ago had like 10-12 players hit the transfer portal and yet here they are.

  22. SMU did not pass us by, they have been ahead of us. As for UTSA, when they hired Wilson many were saying they were going to pass us by. Time will tell.

  23. On the back of Wilson's 204 combined yards and 1 TD reception, the 9ers beat the playoff seeking Cardinals. Side note: Wilson's Texas route TD reception was the exact same route he ran to score the last minute game winning TD against the Cardinals last year.

  26. Honestly, I just don't see the QB position as a major problem. Given game reps and experience, we have multiple QBs who could lead UNT to compete for conference championships. But NO QB is going to be able to do that if we keep giving up over 40 points per game.

  27. Agreed, after his last year at UH and first at A&M he was probably the top young coach in the game. Everything since that time has hurt his resume. His recruiting at zona was worse than his predecessors as well. They had some top 35-40 classes before him.

  28. When FS1 walked away what was the solution? When the presidents said we don’t want Tuesday, Wednesday games nor stuck in an online backwater what was the solution. Commisdioner is most likely not your problem. The school presidents are the problem. Sun Belt took weeknight games and has been rewarded with quite a few late season ESPN family telecasts on Saturdays and not just in this Covid season. The Sun Belt deal was mocked for having schools producing games but I can see every men’s and women’s basketball conference game and most baseball and volleyball. Instead CUSA TV was the alternative and required schools to produce and your subscription fee got you no other content. I can watch NHL, MLB etc on ESPN+ But it was a point of pride to not play weeknights and not be on ESPN+ Since presidents balked at weeknights. That’s your partners not the figurehead

  29. Your budget comment is not true, A&M spends much more than the Miss. schools, Mizzou, Vandy etc. Sure the SEC is stacked but by any financial metric they are always at or near the top. Let’s look at the facts: - Multi million buyouts from his last two jobs for underperforming expectations. - lost 12 straight, including ending on a 63 point blowout - 9 total wins in 3 seasons at Arizona - Briles, not Sumlin took UH to the next level

  30. Lets be honest. Littrell isn't going to fix anything. Seth focused all of his energy on skill position player and ignored the lines until the last two recruiting classes. It's the reason Mason Fine had to be scraped off the turf throughout his hall of fame career at UNT. While we have more talent on the lines now, they still won't be good enough to win in the trenches against the better G5 programs. Next season.. SMU with their new proven Oklahoma transfer QB, will stomp a mud hole in us. UTSA, a team that didn't even have a DC for the second half of their 2020 season, will beat on us like a rented mule. And, LA Tech will extend their domination of us. Littrell is 1-4 against the poor small school from Ruston Louisiana. Seth Littrell has not beaten a team with a winning record since the middle of the 2018 season, and if he is allowed to coach UNT in 2021, he won't beat one next season either. Under Littrell we should beat a few bottom feeders and an FCS program next season, but we will not contend for the division title. And, if we happen to back into another bowl game, we will get thumped again. Littrell is stubborn. He believes his system. He believes that proper execution of his system is the formula for success. He is too stubborn to realize that the bulk of his system's success comes against weak competition, or in games after UNT has been put away. His stubbornness is the reason our team is bad at in game adjustments. Littrell just wants to keep doing what he does. Which is why we will continue to keep losing. In December of next year, if Littrell is still our coach, than we will be lamenting another losing season. And, I will be typing more of the same facts, and some on this board will probably still be typing the same tired excuses.

  31. His 2020 record 0 wins 5 losses. Literally fired after getting beat by their biggest rival 70-7. If we are going to make a move I think we can do better than a guy that had one great season at A&M (who has more budget and resources than anyone) and has seen his number of Wins decline in each of his past eight seasons as a head coach. He completely lost his Arizona team. We will pass on your burner account and steal of the century.

  32. I want nobody who isn’t going to be extremely hungry. Recruiting here is hard. The fan base is small for a university our size. You need somebody who dreams of bigger things. Sumlin, Herman, Strong, etc...they have only coached at places much higher up the food chain than we are. I want somebody who thinks are situation is golden compared to being a head coach in some FCS out post, for example.

  33. That's not exactly fair in this case or really even McCarney for that matter. Seth had basically been offered the K-State job and we reacted to that by increasing his salary and extending his deal. With Mac he had just won a bowl game. So if we are going to be honest with ourselves it was the vast majority who believed it was the right thing to do at the time.

  34. NT will continue having a “stale” coach as long as we extend contracts needlessly. A head coach is hired to win and we are famous for mis-reading a sniff of success as a reason to extend when it’s nothing more than a natural rebound. I mean, even a blind squirrel gets an acorn now and then. GO MEAN GREEN
