It appears to me that UTEP is throwing a bit of a temper tantrum. They don't get that the optics are bad. Canceling is a smart move. Being from EP I would accept a free trip up here any day of the week. They also could have contacted recruits to attend. As a parent, I would think being unprofessional and upset about a game cancelation (and its just a game) over the safety concerns would steer me away from UTEP if my kid was a recruit. (But then again I wouldn't let my kids go to UTEP anyway.) Anyway, their coach needs to chill out and grow up.

Despite El Paso's current Covid 19 pandemic spike, with overwhelmed county hospitals unable to accept injured players, UTEP refused to consider relocating Saturday's game to an alternate location. El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego has proclaimed a county wide lockdown and that UTEP would not be able to host the game because athletic and entertainment events are not categorized as essential businesses. Simply put, the Sun Bowl in El Paso would not be able to host the North Texas - UTEP football game. Not being able to play a game at a specified site is not a new situation for this football series. UTEP, then called Texas Western, was scheduled to be the first guest team at North Texas' opening of their new Eagle Stadium on September 20, 1952. North Texas couldn't host the game at the new stadium because the new field's natural turf was not ready due to a recent heat wave, and requested the game be moved to the older but smaller stadium on campus, to a different metroplex location, or postponed to a date later that season. UTEP wouldn't consider postponement, insisted that the game be moved to El Paso's Kidd Field, and finally compromised with the game being played at a midway neutral site in Odessa, Texas. Now, though no fault of their own, UTEP cannot host the current game in this series. Shouldn't UTEP have to play by the same rules that they themselves created, to only play at the opponents stadium or at a neutral site. No, let the schools work it out. It was a no brainer no to go to El Paso. Virus will probably be around thru 2021 so schools who want to play football need to learn to compromise .

I agree statistically we could have done better. I’m not convinced that any president, past or future would have done substantially better because of the uniqueness of our nation but it is possible. If we had ratios similar to the two best performing major countries in Europe and North America, we would have mimicked Germany and Canada. If we were Germany, we’d have 1.97 million cases and 41.1k deaths but we would have conducted 54.7 million fewer COVID tests. If we were Canada, we’d have 2 million cases and 88.2k deaths but would have also conducted 55.8 million fewer COVID tests. To put into perspective how laughable China’s statistics are, if we were China, we would have less than 20k cases and less than 1k deaths nation-freaking-wide while conducting 104.4 million fewer COVID tests.

Exactly. And if Denton were in the same position El Paso is in and we rejected that offer, I would be mad at us rejecting a game when our subsequent weeks are likely in jeopardy as well. Would much rather play the game away than hope that’s the only game the rest of the season for either team that gets cancelled for us to both make it up.

It's almost like they (UTEP personnel) don't understand what's going on in their own town & why NT would be apprehensive about travelling there with over 100 people.

In my opinion, Dickey did a good job recruiting at NT. We had some really special players back then.

Honestly this speaks to the lack of leadership at the conference level. CUSA should have stepped in a made the decision one way or the other (postpone or move the game). Not let the schools let it play out over social media.

We were so superior to all of those Belt teams back then. But they caught up to us and we completely collapsed starting in 2005. We used to shutdown Troy, Utah State, ULL, Arkansas State, and the others...

There are bus rides, plane trips, and AD staff who travel with the team. Then, if a player gets hurt, there is possibly no option to go to a hospital if the campus facility isn’t enough. but it sounds like you’ve already made up your mind.

Their forum is a bit of a hoot. Apparently blowing out ACU by 3 points turns them into the '85 Bears that other teams are afraid to play.

Who do you think makes the ultimate decisions on the use of any athletic facility at NT? I am amazed that this keeps coming up as a major problem. It just is not. It is like you and others think that the AD is having to write a check to the school for use of facilities. It is all funny money, on paper the AD is charged rent and the school covers it. The Athletic Department loses millions of dollars every year like most programs in the NCAA. I didn't know people could not purchase season tickets because the SPit is too large. The SPit has been upgraded on numerous occasions. New seat coverings, lighting, better restrooms and concessions have all been done. It makes absolutely no difference whether this is ran through the AD or not. The projects have to be approved and funded in the same manner as every other athletic facility. Do you really think the AD (Baker) can unilaterally make decisions to spend millions of dollars on anything?

I don't get it. Why does anyone think that the technical ownership of the SPit makes one iota of difference? The same people are going to make the decisions concerning its use. My guess is that the same process is used at the SPit as Apogee relative to their use. As far as scheduling one women exhibition game, so what. I recall that robotics event, was actually scheduled before the game was. Given the choice of making a little money and moving a women's game that was attended by less than a hundred was not a big deal.

While I didn’t hear him bragging about it, he didn’t really dispute it either, only saying maybe he wasn’t happy about their work. Pretty sorry if he didn’t pay folks what they were owed when they did a good job. In a somewhat related note, I will say, his demeanor was much better in this debate with Clinton than last night with Biden. He really did come off as a petulant child last night. And for the record, I still haven’t voted for Trump in any election.

We need to be fiscally responsible right now. Higher ed will continue to evolve as will focus on fees and value. I wouldn't push on a new arena.

The current NCAA tournament isn't perfect but its the best option for everyone, and my favorite thing about American sports. The conference tournaments do act as a play in for the big NCAA tournament. granted there are always a few teams on the fringe that miss out, but that's what the NIT is for. besides who wants to fill out a bracket with 347 D1 schools?

I had this saved on my DVR and watched it again this weekend. Man, what a great game. Really disappointed we didn't get a chance to see, and they didn't get a chance to play in the post season. Javion was a beast in that game. Love his patience and pace. Reese was such a "glue" player. Even though his shot wasn't falling, he did a lot of the dirty work for the team and never got down. I look forward to seeing him develop into more of a scorer his senior year. Bell, Z. Simmons and Geu were also strong, and no offense to those that have left the team, but I really believe we will be a stronger team next year.
