  1. If we're the last ones to cancel, does that make us National Champions?

  3. Weird time to be making decisions about uniforms. 😉

  4. I already did that with conference basketball tournament tickets that I bought and was never able to use. The financial dire straits up there aren’t due to people like me who religiously buy tickets, they’re due to the thousands of alumni they’ve never managed to convince to give ANYTHING

  5. I'm not sure - I always felt like College Football was more likely to cancel than the Pros. Professionals get paid for taking the risk -- college kids don't.

  6. Shouldn’t a public health decision be made by people who aren’t influenced by their own personal paycheck? Back when the main focus was about flattening the curve and keeping hospital capacities where they needed to be, we had a more defined, measurable goal on where things needed to be. As the quote in McMurphy’s points out, there has been a shift from the focus being on flattening the curve to long-term health impact and liability. Which essentially necessitates a bubble-type solution like the NBA has, where you can get zero cases. Hard to imagine what circumstances will be necessary for college football to return.

  7. Let the players vote. If they want to play, take all appropriate precautions, and let them play. Those who want to opt out, let them do so without loss of scholarship or eligibility. This is a great opportunity for the G5's to get the exposure (no pun intended) they need and covet.

  8. And If one player becomes severely ill or an outbreak happens it will ruin that conference.

  9. B1G is done....other schools will follow suit....have football in spring along with basketball...maybe have double- or triple hitters with basketball teams ???? Stay safe, be well and GMG!

  10. Missed the point. He is stating that, while on the team they are under the supervision and care of the university. Their life is more structured and they don't have the free time for exposure. Plus, the cost of the care, should they contract the virus, falls to the family and not the university.

  11. Well, probably not as challenging as working in a hospital that is over capacity and having to determine who gets lifesaving treatment and who doesn’t. Just a little devil’s advocacy. BTW, recent update on the recovery of my cousin and former Mean Green Football season ticket holder, Steve (good news):

  14. if CUSA somehow was able to put together a season after all the other conferences cancelled, it would be the highest revenue season we could ever dream of just think of all the new fans we would have watching Also, i know this is a total fantasy scenario

  15. It could be great for marketing UNT if we were one of the few that would play. You would need to take precautions though because it could go south.

  16. I’m confused by parts of your post. It’s not a matter of finding a player who WANTS to sit out. I am proposing looking at players who HAVE to sit out a year due to transfer rules, and who would potentially have multiple years of eligibility. Who are some guys eligible this season, not currently on a roster, who we could add and would compete for a starting spot? Right, this is what I was saying. What other circumstance did you think I was proposing? That we sign someone who is immediately eligible and ask them to take a standard redshirt? Again, who is an eligible grad transfer currently available who you think could upgrade our roster? There are some intriguing sit-out guys in the transfer portal currently but I wasn’t able to see any potential starters out of the remaining grad transfers. We lost a guy who wasn’t going to play meaningful minutes. If our coaches didn’t think the other 12 scholarship players were enough to form a solid rotation then I think they would have moved on from Alcindor months ago when the grad transfer and JUCO market was still ripe.

  17. Agreed that a transfer that could sit a year would be a good asset. This team is good enough as is to make a run
    4 points
  18. That puts us at 12 scholarships being used out of an available 13. With 4 key seniors this year it would be nice to opportunistically use that spot on a transfer who becomes available. Let him sit this year then be in position to take over a starting spot after Hamlet, Reese, Bell, and Simmons graduate. https://meangreensports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster

  19. Since the cancellation of the season is now just a matter of “when”, what is the process to issue refunds to those of us who have already paid for season tickets we cannot use? I love my university, but I won’t pay for a season that never happened.

  20. I’m sure the athletic department will (understandably) wait until the last minute to begin that process. No judgement whatsoever but I encourage those who are able to either leave your money in or at least make some form of a donation to do so. Things are going to be reeeeal tough up there. Were this a different era of Mean Green athletics I’d probably ask for my money back but Wren and co have worked so hard and we have come so far.

  25. NFL will definitely play, even though I'm sure by September most, if not all teams, will be playing with no fans. They can operate off the media/TV/ad revenue. It will be crazy if we have a fan-less or delayed Super Bowl. We got "lucky" and everything escalated a month after the Super Bowl this year. Would be sad to think that after nearly a whole year, we still don't have a clear path to normalcy.

  27. I think the athletic department has a few things working against them. All would agree that Wren and Seth have elevated North Texas football in the 4 years they have been here. There really is no question about that. But, I think the glaring issues are that we have yet to win a conference title. We are also still chasing LA Tech despite having more to sell and twice their budget (I know I'm tired of LT making us eat humble pie). And, the last issue is that the athletic department has not done a better job of vetting us donors. I have already stated that I increased my donation this year because of COVID-19. And, I understand the position of the big money donors too (although I wish they didn't state it publicly in the local paper). Like most on this board, I am a smaller donor, and I am limited in what I can give. But, if Wren or someone on his administrative team called me directly, and asked for an additional $100 donation so they could get those exercise bands for the athletes, I would have got my check card out and given him a $100. Would it have covered the entire cost? No. But, I have to believe there are 49 other smaller donors that would do the same. It may have taken 75 calls to reach the $5,000 needed. But, that is the kind of person to person engagement that will help grow our athletics. The small donors can't help if no one reaches out to us. Donors like me will never be able to give at the level where are names will be on the side of anything, but if the athletic department does a better job of identifying those that will do a little more when it is needed, it might go a long way towards keeping our larger donors from feeling like no one else cares. I think the "Scholarship Fund" (and I also agree it should be changed to the "Mean Green Foundation") should inquire if a donor would like to be listed as an additional "small gift" resource, that the department could reach out to no more than once a year in the event of an emergency for an additional contribution of no more than $100. Not everyone is in a position to make that commitment, but I think there is a segment of our fan base that would step up if the department actually reached out and explained the need.

  28. I have been a UNT fan since my freshman year of 1961, and began contributing financially when I could afford too, which was back in the Fry era. I was on the UNT Foundation Board in the early 90's, and learned what a shoestring operation our Athletic Department was. During the Nelson/Dickey eras the amount I donated to athletics was laughable, yet it got me on team flights, sideline passes, and seating in the AD's box. I told Conner Myers that I hoped the amount of money I donated was not worthy of a call from Wren, and achieved my goal. One thing Wren has been able to do is land a few whales who can put a large number of zeros on their checks, as well as keep existing donors. However, he has been unable to expand the number of small donors [bunts and singles] to a meaningful number. Historically UNT does not have a history of alumni giving from the masses. Part of that probably is due to the large number of teachers and musicians who graduate, and with few exceptions have limited disposable income. I don't know what the answer is, but I would think it might start with freshman orientation where students should realize that it is a privilege to attend UNT, and that they owe something back to the University , similar to the AGGIE $100 Club. For my small part I told the Athletic Depart to keep the money I paid for my two club seats, that at my age I would not attend any games if played, and increased my donation by 10%. We all need to do what we can, no more, no less. GO EAGLES !

  29. I believe in the following to increase donor level. 1) The alumni association works very limited with athletes Download the UNT Alumni app...no mention of athletes in any way. We have the Pavilion during football games. Most universities have the alumni center next to the football stadium and they Work Together! 2) How many universities call their donor arm a “Scholarship Fund?” P5 schools have a athletic “foundation “ which is a separate non-profit organization. All or most of the money goes into the foundation and that’s how they get the facilities. Are we at that point? No, but we have never tried it. The Scholarship Fund me sounds like a high school. The idea is “perception” is everything. Just my 2 cents worth. GMG!

  30. I’m happy to see this. I’ve been telling my daughter lately that traditional universities are becoming overcrowded with kids who will go deep into debt when the jobs aren’t there...all the while trade schools are not seen as a worthy alternative. Not everyone can go to a 4-year college and I’m happy to see this kid taking another path.

  34. I don't think there is anyway that fall football occurs. If it does, those teams that play would lose a year of eligibility for players; while those that sitout will gain a year of training for their players. I am not sure if I were a senior football player, I would want to play my last year in empty stadiums.

  35. The challenge with this is that what if you don't have enough players to fill out a 2-deep depth chart? What happens if during the season one or more players contract COVID-19 and those players plus any players and staff members exposed must then be quarantined where they don't have enough players to field a team? A big concern the universities have is that they are worried that they could be sued if a player or staff member gets sick.

  42. I believe we changed the name of the Mean Green Club due to provisions in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. The law impacts what qualifies as charitable giving, and the way the Club was structured would’ve rendered our contributions non-deductible for tax purposes. That’s why it’s now billed as a scholarship fund, and advertised as such, so that we get to keep the tax write-off.

  43. I don’t know if Wren or SL would be ok with it but the fans like it. I would say only if at Apogee. Otherwise pass.

  44. Well yeah, that’s part of my point. But unless you had to cut employees and salaries because your company had to make a public health decision that negatively impacted profits, this isn’t exactly a similar comparison. You’re basically just stating that cutting jobs sucks when you know the faces you’re impacting, and especially if you yourself are being directly impacted. Which is obvious. But because we know that, doesn’t that prove my point that someone whose pay is at stake probably shouldn’t be in charge of making the decision because they might choose the option where they continued to get paid over the best decision for public health, if those options were directly opposed? And I’m not saying cancelling the season is the right call. Just that with a matter of public health the call shouldn’t come down to someone having to choose between jeopardizing the future of their own job or continuing to be paid.

  45. i totally get that the government messed up from the beginning, not arguing that point at all. it's the statement of "150k easily preventable deaths" that is made when there is no way in hell anyone could have easily prevented those 150k deaths. that's it...quit making statements that you know aren't true just because you don't like how someone handled something. everything you mentioned would have been great if it was put in place, but that still wouldn't have easily prevented 150k deaths...some of those deaths, sure, but not all 150k. i know you didn't state that, just using it due to someone posting it.
