  1. In Brett Vito’s recent article about the Ragsdale and Vailea commitments, he made a statement that interested me. ”UNT rarely ventures far from the talent-rich Dallas-Fort Worth area, and Texas in general, when it comes to football recruiting.” This is certainly something that had been established as a generally true statement for a while, but we are seeing a shift under Littrell. In the 2020 class we signed just 3 players from the DFW Metroplex (Kortlin Rausaw, Garnett Burke, and Tavorice Weaver). Meanwhile we signed 6 high school players from out of state, and have 4 HS commits in our 2021 class already from out of state. In Mccarney’s 5 recruiting classes we had just 11 out of state high school signees. In state, Mccarney really hit East Texas hard especially a few years in, while Littrell has actually favored Houston over DFW in recent years. What these trends seem to show to me is that these guys, both non-Native Texans, took the job and looked at the DFW metroplex early on and figured that made the most sense to focus our recruiting efforts. This obviously makes a lot of sense at the surface level, but I think both learned the hard way that UNT does not exactly have a great reputation in the area and in many ways that makes it more of an uphill battle recruiting local kids as opposed to kids out of the metroplex. We see this especially in Denton ISD and Argyle. It’s an unfortunate reality that we face in recruiting but the goal is to put together the best team, not the team with the most local recruits. It is going to take periods of prolonged winning to offset the reputation we have throughout most of the metroplex but lining our depth chart with high caliber recruits is a great start.

  3. We generally recruit a player there most years. The head coach is an alumnus. And it would be ridiculous to not recruit at one of the best programs in the state that is only half and hour away. It is true we have had trouble landing them. It isn’t our most fertile recruiting grounds, but you can’t ignore it.

  5. I think we are on year six of your doom and gloom bit. Leave and do what? You think that if the P5s started over they would agree on anything? That the PAC12 and SEC would be willing to follow the same rules? Or suddenly the BIG10 would acquiesce to anything the Big12 or ACC would want? I'm highly skeptical. And who would run this organization? I can't think of anybody who has the clout and political skills to make everybody happy. The rules are barely followed now, would any rule be followed if the conferences were the ones who enforced the rules? Not a chance. Is the NCAA a bureaucratic mess? Absolutely. Does it need Emmert gone and massive reform? Yep. But the idea that the P5s could magically make this work by breaking off seems very far fetched to me. In a way it would be a fun, chaos experiment. I think schools like Miami and a variety of SEC schools would do WHATEVER it took to be successful. It'd make the 80s scandals look like Mister Roger's Neighborhood.

  6. Did anyone else see Wren last night on Dale Hansen? I just caught the last of it, but it was essentially wear your mask & follow guidelines, social distance etc if you want any chance of football coming back this fall.

  7. The halls aren’t going to look like that everywhere. Where I’m at only 44% opted for face to face (in school) this fall. The numbers for Frisco schools were made public, and they are all over the map...but most schools would be less than 50% capacity. I have my doubts that we’re going to be allowed to do anything other than virtual school this fall, though.

  10. Yeah, if you're under 70, the death rate is pretty much the same as flu as I understand it (less deadly for children I think), but of course it is more transmissible so you're still going to have more people die in total. I've known two people in their 40s who've gotten it and they both pretty much just felt lethargic for a few weeks and lost their sense of smell for a while.

  12. A waste of time and resources to send an email or a letter offering a scholarship? Or to visit him at SL Carroll, a school where we actively recruit other players anyway? Granted I don’t think we will land him anyway but we offered four years ago. And we were first. So why not?

  16. You are right. I painted the issue with a broad brush based upon the idea that the NCAA brings nothing to the table for P5 programs. They don't have to like each other to work together for a common goal.We will probably get a better idea of the future in 2023 when TV contracts are renewed. At 77 I hope to be alive to see it as well as another round of conference realignment. It should be fun.

  19. While I'm happy for the kid I really think this is a bit ridiculous. The parents are mostly to blame, but why on earth are we offering a 7th grader? Recruiting is getting out of hand now IMO.

  20. 1. You're making random arguments against positions neither I nor the OP have taken, and 2. Let's see the state our children's education will be in if they don't physically go to school for two years. This isn't a simple black and white issue.

  21. Agreed. We have been beating them out a good bit lately. Maybe it’s not necessarily a bad reputation, but you often see G5 schools sign high caliber recruits from their backyard who they would not have signed if proximity had not been in their favor. Like a Miami kid choosing FAU over P5s. We have never had that situation play out for us with schools like Denton Ryan, Guyer, or Argyle. And in general, with a lot of the kids we have signed who had a lot of other options, many have been from Houston or out of state. I get not every kid wants to stay close to home, but we are clearly having MORE success in situations where we are NOT able to pitch proximity which I think says more about the area and our perception than our coaches’ recruiting abilities.

  23. Your guy just wished the person below well. This seems like a pretty easy person to denounce, I wonder why he only had positive things to say about this despicable person? "I wish her well, frankly." "GHISLAINE MAXWELL, 58, is charged with one count of enticing a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, one count of conspiracy to entice a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, one count of transporting a minor with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, one count of conspiracy to transport a minor with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, and two counts of perjury, each of which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison."

  24. I was thinking this kind of thing would happen. It would be wise to let the P5 teams cancel their pay-out games before we and the other G5 teams do so.

  25. Glad to see he’s back. Also noticed this graphic from the coaches says “OL” under his name. Wonder if there is any chance that he is an offensive line commit.

  26. I don’t think we have a “bad” reputation in this area, it is more like DFW is overrecruited. Many coaches across the country get hired because of DFW recruiting ties and they have to deliver kids. There are certainly many good players in the Metroplex, but it is a better value to shop where the inventory hasn’t been picked through.
    2 points
  27. Yeah that has been the case for a while so it makes sense how ingrained it is in the minds of DFW area coaches, many of whom grew up here and know that totem pole well. I also wonder what the Todd Dodge fiasco did for our reputation among high school coaches. Is the prevailing sentiment “Todd Dodge was a great coach but he had no chance of being successful at that school” or something along those lines? And how many coaches’ opinions soured on our program because of that, because maybe they were watching more closely then because of Dodge? Would love to hear @GMG24 chime in and share his thoughts on his experience with the perception of the UNT Football program among the DFW coaching community.

  29. You didn't address any of the issues I pointed out, especially that you think the P5 is one big happy family. It's not. None of the issues facing college sports (paying players, using players likeness without compensation, cheating, recruiting issues, not having a commissioner with enforcement powers, how to recover from the current situation, and more that I can't think of) go away with creating a new "NCAA." Not to mention the P5 UNIVERSITIES (oh yeah, there's that pesky mission of actually educating students, not running sports organizations) aren't made to do this. Kinda why they have someone else to do it. P5s already get all the football money, there's no money in all the so-called Olympic sports so the only thing left is basketball. I'm not sure if you split the money the NCAA gets from the tournament and allocate that to the P5 schools (divided by 64+ ways) it's worth the headache of creating a new NCAA. So far I've given you my reasons why it probably won't happen and all you've said is "Why would't they?" So how about you give me some reasons besides money (and you haven't said how much money that would be) to make me think there is some chance of this happening. I've just never seen anything laid out what the benefits are except it would get rid of the NCAA as we know it.

  35. I am a student at Texas Tech (love my mean green though) and I honestly believe this could be a game that UNT might win. Our starting QB left and our backup QB Alan Bowman (who will be starting) is super prone to injuries. If he goes down, which is likely, Tech is doomed. Would be a really fun series, and wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if UNT snatched one.

  36. If anything NT is slowly improving their recruiting in the area. It is almost impossible to out recruit your conference affiliation, NT is seldom going to beat out P5's for players or even the AAC. NT is not signing Nevada athletes because they can't recruit regional players, they are signing out of state players because they believe they will be successful here.

  37. OK, but what is to keep the P5 conferences from leaving the NCAA and forming their own organization?. They have most of the money and TV contracts. I don't see what the NCAA does that they couldn't do for themselves under their own banner. It would be like NAIA only much larger.
