  1. The longer this lasts, the more of this type of thing we will see. NT is far from immune.

  2. I can't speak to the validity of their complaints, but I will say that the UTSA grads I know are some of the whiniest people I've ever met. But then again, I guess when you donate to a school cannon, and you get a paper box in return, you probably have some reason to think the world is against you.

  4. I hear you, but it isn’t a direct equivalent. The fees I mentioned are for a direct purpose/service, whereas your taxes go in a pot of money that is later budgeted and allocated. Your aren’t using those services you mentioned and so the utilities on them are lower and that money gets reallocated. Students aren’t like taxpayers. They make a choice to attend the university and are levied fees for services to which they have access. There is some element of “the greater good” but in general it is a fee for service. Taxes pay for services but are largely intended for the greater good - hence single or childless people paying property taxes that fund the schools.

  8. What's interesting is the paradigm shift caused from the virus.... Work from anywhere is going to be the next revolution. So someone making $300K living in a tiny house with 3 other people barely getting by in Silicon Valley can take that salary and live in a huge house and stretch their dollar further in Texas, Arizona, Utah, etc. Facebook and other companies are already threatening to adjust the salaries of employees considering that...(seems foolish...but that's on them) This also opens up a huge net for talent...so it's going to go both ways. Now companies can open their talent search. Going to be interesting to watch.

  10. Not all news is bad. Frisco Bowl extended and has ties to CUSA and several others. Wouldn't mind seeing us playing there some day. Even if there are no or few fans allowed in the stadium I think the tailgating would be great. https://espnpressroom.com/us/press-releases/2020/06/espn-events-and-fc-dallas-extend-agreement-for-frisco-bowl/

  11. I know this is not football related, and feel free to move it (but please leave a link from here to wherever it goes), but I wanted to get as many eyes on this as possible. As a police practitioner, and a person with a healthy intellectual curiosity, I have observed the events of the past several months with great interest. Because we live in a world where it seems people communicate through catchy memes or by sharing blatantly slanted “news” articles, I wondered what people really think. So, I have compiled a short, quick survey to allow people to ANONYMOUSLY share their perspectives. I often get a chance to address police departments and I want to gather greater perspective. Please take a moment to take part. Note that there are TWO links below, one for individuals who are sworn officers (I know there are a few on this board) and one for “civilians.” The questions are identical, but they are designed to capture two distinct vantage points. Thanks Please choose the correct one. Civilian Version: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FLH73GP Sworn Officer Version: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NBDVHY8

  12. Having a billion AUM (assets under management) does not mean you're a billion dollar company. I manage over $1b at a large investment shop but I am a few buckaroos short of being a billionaire myself. I'll bet you the equivalent of all my client's dollars I'm more educated than you on the issues plaguing south side Chicago. The materials and literature lay outside the halls of Fox, Breitbart, AON, and your church, so let me know if you need a hand.

  17. If no or few precautions are taken then I agree that there will be no college football this year. However, the purpose of the agreement as I understand it was to relieve the university of countless lawsuits if anyone got infected. The fact I see is that those infected would blame the university regardless of where they might have contracted the virus. If clear heads win out I could see that each player would be tested on arrival and perhaps weekly thereafter. Those with symptoms would be tested in a shorter period of time. If a university is liable for all of its athletes then how about the student body as well? Then you've opened Pandora's box. It would be cost prohibitive to test every student and athlete within a short period of time. Do we also include the faculty and staff? The cost goes on and on. Personally, I don't see Congress making any college liable for the wellness of its students and employees. You proceed at your own peril which translates to...yes, there will be college sports this year (and classes).

  19. Some feedback... I immediately got stuck on the second question, especially since I didn't know the subsequent questions or if they were dynamic based on responses. My employer does similar things by asking questions like "T/F Our level of training on XXX is correct". The questions are worded more subtle than this, but there's never a way to say that you think it's too much. Often, media polls are often biased in a similar way. Specifically, for your question, reforms may be necessary, but I don't think people agree on what these reforms necessarily are, so simply saying "yes" could convey different intents. Edit - I continued to the next question and see that you did make this dynamic (good job) and unlike many polls, provide the ability to go back and change the selection. Question 10 seems to be need a "no, it's worse" option to be complete. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

  22. The problem is that NT is financed to a large degree by student fees. I doubt NT is setting on a big money surplus. At some point, if the shutdown continues, there will have to be cuts and they will be much worse than what is going on down at UTSA. It won't be a case of being prudent or cautious, but a necessity. NT and many others simply won't have the money to support sports that they can't play or play before extremely small crowds. Conferences that actually have tv contracts that pay big money might survive. CUSA is not one of those. If and when it is decided that college football will not be played next year, I expect there will be a lot of coaches terminated not just have their salaries cut. Frankly, at that point; it makes no sense at all to pay football coaches anything. New ones can always be hired once football returns full force. The issue will be existing contracts and how they are structured.

  24. In the country where I live, the hospitals are now so full with “pneumonia” patients that they’ve turned away sick people and told them to go home and treat themselves. People who have symptoms can’t get tests. There are ambulance shortages. 30 percent of cases are medical professionals. There are a handful of people starting to die from other diseases because they were turned away from the specialized hospital that treats their problem because it was turned into a Covid or pneumonia ward.

  26. Also bad news that we are way undercounting the deaths. Once all told - the numbers will put all of this into the right focus. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2767980?fbclid=IwAR22GzqY6-DpekPn30SZApARe5qDPylJCALtL68hNpujnZMI72e3uvkaPAk This undercount is likely one of the reasons @CMJ hasn't seen the spike he was expecting.

  27. They are student service fees. No available services, then the fees are unwarranted. Case in point would be the Rec Center. Why pay for use of a building you can’t access? International education fee: is there are no exchanges and travel prohibited then why pay that? Why pay the full athletic fee if you aren’t allowed to attend a game?

Assuming they play this season I’m thinking: - 25% capacity by ticket type - General Seating within the ticket type sections (i.e. if you purchase Scholarship Premium tickets, you can sit anywhere in the Scholarship Premium sections) - Social distancing signs and instructions posted all over the place - Hand sanitizer stations all over the place - Plexiglass shields at concession stands - Masks required except while seated eating or drinking - alternating urinals and sinks blocked from usage - UNT masks as MGSF gifts

  42. If you haven't seen the documentary "13th" it'll help explain a lot to those of who are arguing to keep the statues. Nixon implemented the Southern Strategy in the mid to late 60's as a response to increasing civil rights among black people. He used "law and order" (Sound familiar) to appeal to white democrats in the south to come over to the GOP. Reminder that slavery is still legal for those imprisoned. Reagan implemented the war on drugs, imprisoning hundreds of thousands, then Clinton, in a response to Reagan/HW Bush, pushed more to the center (Law and order again) and passed the 3 strike rule, the 1994 crime bill, and really implemented the rapid militarization of the police. I'm a White, born and raised Texan, my roots are from Mississippi. My great great grandfather fought and lost a leg for the South. We still visit his homestead property in northern Mississippi every so often where distant relatives still live. I've got the excuse for southern pride as much as the next white guy with conservative parents from the south. Hell I attended ROBERT E LEE High school, where part of our fight song was literally DIXIE. That being said. All of these statues represent the systematic oppression of black people in this country for hundreds of years. There is no excuse to keep these things up, just like there's no excuse for all of the racist ass policies enacted in the last 150 years( By both parties) to essentially keep black people legally enslaved through policing. Statues belong in Museums. Every president we've had since 1789 is a war criminal. Abolish the government. Taxation is theft. Black Lives Matter Edit: BLM the movement. Not the organization. They're a bunch of communists.

  47. My wife called me on the 18th freaking out because a coworker tested positive with the virus. The coworker returned from vacation on the 17th with symptoms, and tested positive the next day. I immediately left the office on the 18th and was ordered by work to stay at home for two weeks. I went and got a test on the 24th. My Dr called me yesterday to let me know that I tested positive. My wife's test was botched but they assume she has it too. Symptoms- A little bit of a stuffy nose, and a little bit of fatigue. I am an avid runner, and I was able to run 4 miles in the summer heat this weekend. However, after the run my energy was zapped. I do not have a fever or cough. I'm in shock that I have it. I take a multivitamin and zinc every day. I really think this is helping fight the virus. I'm trying to stay active by working out at home.

  48. I don’t know about when you attended, but during my ridiculously long tenure at UNT one had to obtain the permission of the Dean of Students (or a similar office) to speak out on campus or protest. And it had to be not only approved but scheduled. Oh and it was only within about a 50x50 area in front of the Union with a plaque that said “Free Speech Area” - although I think the plaque neglected to include the asterisk saying “as long as pre-approved and scheduled.” I don’t know about your definition but it fails to meet the bar of free speech to me. My point being that universities do not allow unfettered free speech, expression, or assembly and students agree to that upon enrolling whether they read the fine print or not.
