If WKU is already “cutting to the bone”, G5 schools will be lopping off entire body parts if there is no football this fall. Let’s be real, the potential for college football this fall is looking bleaker by the day. Heck, the reduction in ticket sales may already be a fatal blow to some programs. Out of financial necessity, some Universities will be forced to cut additional sports teams, putting them under the required 16 teams for FBS eligibility. Cough::Tulsa::cough I hope with us being a large public university in DFW, we can weather this storm and take Tulsa’s place in the AAC.

  4. That’s why it’s imperative that we not only renew our season tickets but also encourage others to both buy season tickets and to give generously to the MGSF. I personally will be surprised if there is college football this year. However, through this adversity which may very well force many G5’s to cut many of their sports and their budgets lies the opportunity for those in a better financial position to move up to maybe a better conference?

  5. When I moved from Wichita Falls to Denton to attend North Texas back in 1973 I remember being shocked to see that statue on the grounds of the Denton County Courthouse, never having been aware of any "Confederate Statues" in Wichita Falls, and instead being accustomed to the World War 1 statue "Spirit of the American Doughboy" on the grounds of the Wichita Falls Memorial Auditorium: https://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM7GQE_The_Spirit_of_the_American_Doughboy_Wichita_Falls_TX I suppose the "shocked" part was due to having been raised by a Bible believing mother who interpreted the Exodus story in the Old Testament as a testimony against the enslavement or state mandated segregation of any race or nation. She told me once how great a sin those institutions were, and that we would eventually "pay a great price" for them. I have no doubt in the truth of what she said. However, I now realize that, although apparently not a "statue", there is a Confederate monument in Wichita Falls, which is now the subject of a petition for removal (and according to the Wichita Falls Times and Record News site, which cannot be linked to at this time, a counter petition). Here's a link to the local TV station feature about said removal petition. https://www.newschannel6now.com/2020/06/15/wf-resident-starts-petition-remove-confederate-monument/ Honestly, I'll never cry about the "Confederate Statue removals", as such things have been moved around at different times anyway, and it strikes me as odd to have memorials to the former enemies of a nation displayed in public places within the territory of the victorious nation, especially with a near universal condemnation of the obvious cause of the defeated enemy, preservation of slavery. If there is concern about the loss of "history" associated with these statues, why not simply start a process of moving towards removal from their places of pride and placement within museums or other locations which might provide plaques with explanations or other contextual material. I mean, the one taken down in Richmond was apparently within the right-of-way of a major boulevard. And yes, we do need to go away from these radical rightists and leftist viewpoints and try to at least understand what happened during the periods being presumably memorialized and the periods when many of these monuments were placed. An example, is the linked content dealing with the typical "Doughboy" statue, explaining its depiction of a "strong and healthy" returning WW1 soldier as a way of providing a counter narrative to the tragedy of deaths from the War and subsequent 1918 flu epidemic. https://www.history.com/news/why-were-americans-who-served-in-world-war-i-called-doughboys And I would actually hate to see monuments to those who fought to keep our country free removed; just don't see the confederates as having fought for that freedom cause. However, I do think we shouldn't be quick to condemn some who were white and leaders back in those days who may have been constrained by the incredibly convoluted legal machinery put in place to maintain "the peculiar institution". For example, there is one story of Sam Houston having bought a young black man to save him from a mob, and Houston later described himself as always having been opposed to slavery, and was certainly removed as Texas governor as anti secession.

  6. Southern Miss plays home football games at The Rock, but league foes from a time zone away rarely bring many visiting fans. The first thing I’d do as commissioner of Conference USA? I’d blow it up. It doesn’t work. It didn’t work long before the pandemic. It certainly won’t work now. Most of all, the economics don’t work. There’s too much travel, not nearly enough revenue. In many ways, the league was designed – and has been altered over the years – with TV markets in mind. That’s why FIU (Florida Internatonal University) and FAU (Florida Atlantic Univeristy) were accepted as members in 2013, to regain the Florida TV market lost when first South Florida and UCF (University of Central Florida) exited. That’s why UTSA (University of Texas at San Antonio) was accepted in 2013. San Antonio is a big city with lots of TVs. read more: https://www.northsidesun.com/news-breaking-news-sports-columns/its-past-time-radical-change-conference-usa#sthash.PUnfUtCn.dpbs

  7. One year rankings don't mean a lot. There is a substantial difference in the overall academics between the leagues. There are also other sports than football and basketball. I am all for more regional leagues, so App St doesn't concern me. Without any research, I would think that ULaLa and Ark State would be much better candidates.

  9. I agree that the SBC would be a step down but all programs are not inferior to all CUSA members. For example, are Appalachian State and Troy inferior to Florida International or Old Dominion? As the Western Division of CUSA is the stronger of existing alliances I would hope that they would have the lead in selecting who would be taken in to the new CUSA. If it were my choice I would take Troy, Louisiana, Arkansas State and Texas State and give up UTEP. That would only be a ten team conference but enough for now.

  10. I know some like to travel to games and want it to be easy, understandable. But, do you really think LSU or UT cares how many opposing fans show up at the home games? They don't, they sell what the powers that be require, if up to them it would be ZERO. My point is, we should be focused on selling more tickets to our fans first and not if the opposing teams show up, and fill out what should be a shrinking section not growing. Oh and I am aware that LSU travels very well, but they have lots and lots of rabid fans, and they go to Wisconsin you name it, does not really matter. Lets sell out our games by creating demand from our growing fanbase first, it seems weak relying on opposing teams for attendance.

  11. Answered your own question. Regarding Lincoln, pretty sure that's just a small contingent in Madison, WI who wants that done and they're very alone on that one.

  12. This. If you are going to schedule a FCS game, play someone who will help you with attendance. SFA and SHSU are the only two that will do that, since they will bring people and our own fans will know alumni and students at those schools. Bethune-Cookman, Lamar, Incarnate Word, Houston Baptist, Nicholls State, Portland State, etc...they are lose/lose propositions every time.

  15. Regional competition has yet to help Appogee attendance. I've sat there across from the student/ visitor side (my season tickets go back to Fouts Field) and on occasion you'll see several hundred in the visitor section...but not packed. The closest is when playing a P5 and that doesn't happen often. Last year I went to several away games..USM one of them. Other than team member families, there weren't very many UNT fans who make these trips. You want change...immediate help would be new leadership in CUSA administration. My hope is in a new conference affiliation.

  21. It is interesting that guarantee money does not vary more. Looks like around 75k is the standard. Also is disappointing, as no big name opponents appear to be coming to Denton. Just continuation of a situation in men's basketball were home oc schedules are basically a collection of teams that the home team will be heavily favored to beat. Miss State, LSU and Wichita State may regret scheduling NT. Just hope we have a full college basketball season.

  27. I agree with the first part of your statement. If CUSA and SBC are to survive, the cost of travel and related expenses need to be drastically reduced for two conferences with minimal revenue. The latter part, regarding the schedule cancellations for this year being necessary for change, is not going to happen this year but should be started soon as it will take a couple of years for restructuring and schedule changes to occur. I still cling to the hope that we will be able to join a conference that does not include most of our current conference mates. Normally, I wouldn't think a better conference would be possible but I don't want to underestimate the abilities of our president and athletic director. I firmly believe that they will give that their best shot. However, whatever our outcome, the restructuring of CUSA/SBC is necessary for survival in the opinion of this even older man.

  28. He is listed as a tight end because he was moved to the “Y” receiver position, which is an inside receiver position in our offense. We have two inside receiver positions, “A” and “Y”. “A” is more of a traditional slot receiver like Jaelon Darden who is our starting “A” receiver, and “Y” is a more like a pass-catching tight end type body. Lyles, and all of the players listed as tight ends, are our “Y” receivers. So while Lyles is listed as a tight end you won’t see him lining up next to an offensive tackle with his hand in the dirt combo blocking a defensive end.

  29. Note: I agree taking down ones for Lee, Davis, etc since they were leaders of the rebellion. Ones put up for common soldiers are a bit tougher of a call (for me). Despite what's often said, even Germany has monuments for regular soldiers from WWII (many are repurposed WWI and even Franco-Prussian War memorials, but not all of them are), so regular troops are memorialized overseas, even if their cause was unjust. http://www.thirdreichruins.com/memorials.htm And I certainly don't agree with taking down ones for people like US Grant, George Washington, or Francis Scott Key.

Buechele started 19 games for UT, and wasn't bad while doing so. If it wasn't for him SMU would probably go 7-6 and be wondering if all the transfers were worth it.

  38. can you accept your heroes failings? you took my criticism and leaped to the idea that I "find nothing good about our country". I think there are innumerable wonderful things about the United States. I think we've produced hundreds of thousands of brilliant minds, remarkably talented artists, inspirational leaders...I'll gladly put my first-hand knowledge and experiences of the beauty and cultures across this country up against anyone (at least anyone on this board.) I also think we've done a lot of shit. like, really, really bad shit. and I think it's important to teach, learn and understand both...the great and the shit...unfortunately we have for all of years been force-fed American Exceptionalism...really in both definitions of the word...and that has sucked many/most/the masses of their ability to have any sense of humility when it comes to our history. we'd rather bury it than address it honestly...or at best we frame our general teaching to only focus and promote a narrative of American "greatness". for example, the more I thought about it, I honestly still can not get over how you framed the Civil War as a fight to end slavery. one side fought to defend slavery. the other fought to maintain a union...after 50+ years of compromises to maintain a balance of interests between north and south. and to frame it that way is disingenuous and dangerous. it takes one of the worst things our nation has done, makes Lincoln a hero for "ending slavery"...teaches you Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment and ties a pretty little bow on things. to your question, I have dozen of people whose work/lives/art/knowledge/viewpoints I admire...I do think the words and message of MLK are as incredibly poignant right now as they were in the 60s...same goes for Malcom, Fred Hampton, Nina Simone...I admire the lives and works of Ernest Hemingway, Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski, Tom Robbins...Fela Kuti, Jason Molina, Killer Mike...don't know if I'd call any of them "hero", though...don't know if I've any real need for a "hero". maybe Bill Murray? oh, and @Quoner

After a tough front nine to start the tournament where he was 4 over at one point, he has been playing really well. he is -5 for the day through twelve holes and -11 for the tournament. The current leader in the clubhouse is at -13. They have been showing Munoz quite a bit. He just started his round and is -1 through the second hole and -9 for the tournament.

  41. Those are your typical hiring processes for US agencies. Standard procedure: Initial application Written exam Physical exam Personal History Statement which is literally a book covering your entire life. All your family, your complete education, every job you have ever held, and your complete financial history. Oral Board interview which consists of 3-10 members of the agency you are applying with, that goes into every bit of detail you put into your personal history statement, as well as detailed questions regarding law enforcement, and then several scenario based questions in which you answer how you would handle a situation. If you pass the oral board, then comes the background investigation. Which can take months, and often includes the background investigator driving to each place of employment to personally view your employment records. If you make it this far, sometimes there will be another oral board. If i didn't properly convey how stressful they are the first time, they are basically interrogations, in which every answer you give is wrong. So after all that, comes the interview with the head of th agency, be it the chief or the sheriff. If they give the final approval, then you go take your Medical exam Polygraph And psychological exam. The process typically takes at a minimum 3 months, and that is extremely fast. I've seen the process take a full year just to be turned down. So, again, what else would you like to see done as part of the hiring process?
