  1. Hey, Steamin! I have no issue what so ever eliminating minstrel music. But, who plays that anymore? I never knew the history of "The Eyes of Texas" until about a week or so ago. It never occurred to me in all of my 64 years of existence. To me, it was just a snappy fight song with Texas undertones. Racist imagery? Depends on the definition of racist, to me anyway. Never have I ever, looked at a bottle of Aunt Jemima pancake syrup, and thought, well, I don't even want to think such thoughts. Traitors? Again, depends on your definition, doesn't it? Now, I don't know you from Adam, but I'l bet we've stood side by side at several games with a common bond and considered each other brothers in arms, cheering for a common goal. I'm assuming we are of different ethnic persuasions and frankly, I couldn't care less if we are. The point is, when people share a common goal, no matter what it is, we are all brothers. I look at the confederacy and their representatives strictly from a historical perspective. To me, they were brothers in arms, fighting for a common goal, whether we think it noble or not. I ascribe no moral judgement to it other than to think that the battle for states rights was noble, but the battle for slavery was not. Nevertheless, it was history, but nothing I dwell on or long for, and I know from a human and Christian perspective slavery was wrong. Dead wrong. But we have moved so far from that, haven't we? I mean, we've had our first black President, right? I'd say at least half of the voters we're white. Bottom line, I think we have common ground on many things and we don't have to throw out the baby with the bath water.

  2. You were unhappy with responses that didn’t address your assertions so I tried to answer you directly paragraph by paragraph. I am also including some excerpts from my bio terrorism and public health textbooks as backing evidence to my statements. 1) Yes we DO know that more people are dying and they aren’t all old people. Plus - as I have said ad nauseam - it isn’t only about deaths. People are suffering from heart and kidney problems from this, in addition to lingering lung problems. “Recovered” means not dead, not free of sometimes serious health problems. 2) It is wrong to not wear a mask in enclosed public places like bars, especially if you generally don’t practice physical distancing or use a mask. It protects others from you. 3) You likely won’t die. You are more likely to just help spread the virus and not know it. Take a look at the rising cases in FL, AZ, and TX. My current city relaxed measures and people stopped wearing masks. We went from around 25 cases a day to today’s reported 192 within a week. Has been rising all week. I think you can do the math. Masks aren’t perfect but they help. The problem with your belief is that it probably affects you less than it affects others around you. The drunk driver usually survives the crash, if you get my analogy. 4) I wish I could see you at Apogee but I can’t make it. If I could, however, I would skip that beer. You are one of the people I look forward to seeing but I would not expose my family to you because of what you practice. Not this year. 5) The virus wasn’t completely avoidable but we did little to prevent its spread in the US. We didn’t have early testing capacity. We didn’t adequately try to do contract tracing of incoming infected patients from overseas. We are the most powerful nation in the world and we had advanced notice. We should have tested everyone coming from China early on and then from Korea, Europe, and a few other selected countries at a minimum. As I understand that still isn’t happening. We could have require a two week at home quarantine upon arrive with or without testing. That rarely happened. We should have encouraged masks earlier but we didn’t because we didn’t have sufficient masks for medical professionals so we couldn’t. Then masks were stigmatized as not cool or not manly or some bullshit. Our political leadership didn’t follow their own guidance and even blatantly disregarded local regulations when visiting. Not to mention downplayed the virus and it’s seriousness while pushing false curses and false hopes for vaccines. It was almost a complete failure all around. New Zealand zeroed our COVID recently and then apologized when two cases popped up. We have over a 100k dead and rising and we haven’t had a task force briefing in over a month. Simply put, we knew how to deal with this kind of thing and chose not to. I hope this adequately addressed your questions, Thomas. Stay healthy because I look forward to that next beer with you sometime. Ben

  3. Those are your typical hiring processes for US agencies. Standard procedure: Initial application Written exam Physical exam Personal History Statement which is literally a book covering your entire life. All your family, your complete education, every job you have ever held, and your complete financial history. Oral Board interview which consists of 3-10 members of the agency you are applying with, that goes into every bit of detail you put into your personal history statement, as well as detailed questions regarding law enforcement, and then several scenario based questions in which you answer how you would handle a situation. If you pass the oral board, then comes the background investigation. Which can take months, and often includes the background investigator driving to each place of employment to personally view your employment records. If you make it this far, sometimes there will be another oral board. If i didn't properly convey how stressful they are the first time, they are basically interrogations, in which every answer you give is wrong. So after all that, comes the interview with the head of th agency, be it the chief or the sheriff. If they give the final approval, then you go take your Medical exam Polygraph And psychological exam. The process typically takes at a minimum 3 months, and that is extremely fast. I've seen the process take a full year just to be turned down. So, again, what else would you like to see done as part of the hiring process?

  4. I’m very aware of that. Not insulting them, but if I came off that way, then I apologize. Not all counties screen as well as others. It would be interesting to see the requirements of our own local law enforcement. Minimum education requirements should be raised, imo.

  5. The thing with La Tech is that they have two things we don’t have—a history of winning and they sit in a hotbed of talent in their state where they have little opposition. Tulane is hard to get into, ULL and ULM are clearly below them, and their winning has made LA HS coaches and parents look at them seriously. This is where the money part doesn’t bridge the gap between us and LT. We beat them on facilities, location, and academics, but they beat us at coaching, talent, and size. Their physicality has been the difference the last two years between us and them, same with UAB.

  6. I'm not sure what we're even arguing about. I never claimed that the war didn't start over slavery nor am defending what came afterwards. I'm simply stating that slavery wasn't much of an issue to the vast majority of the soldiers. Nor did the soldiers consider themselves traitors. In their minds the situation was analogous to the Revolutionary War. I mean, I guess they were traitors in a technical sense, but no less so than their grandparents had been during the revolution. Ha! It must be so amazing to so easily pass moral judgement on a whole group of people from 160 years ago, the vast majority of whom had probably never been further than 50 miles from their homes, were little educated, poor, and yet fought bravely to defend what they viewed as an invasion of their homeland. I think it is not irrational to feel sympathy and admiration for people who acted bravely even if the governments under which they fought were unjust.

  7. IMHO....When you watch the times Aune and Bean were in, last spring to last fall, it was obvious who was better. Aune managed to move the ball and score. Nearly ever time Bean was in he turned the ball over. I wish both the very best but the leadership and outcomes of those drives clearly show Aune is the best going into Fall camp. Aune is very athletic and has an arm as well. A QB that just likes to run doesn’t usually go well as you get deeper in the season.

  8. We have people calling for any monument of George Washington (First POTUS and leader of the American Revolution) and Thomas Jefferson (Third POTUS and principal author of the Declaration of Independence) to be torn down. To be frank, without George Washington, we might not have a country with which Shaun King can even make such a comment freely.

  9. i think your question is the right one. many out there are claiming for changes and to do something about it, but what more could be done in the hiring process? now i do think they should take complaints/bad choices officers make while on the job much more seriously, but i have no idea how much better departments can do when hiring someone (assuming everything you wrote is true of most departments) and there is no way in hell i would want to be a police officer...thank ya'll for doing the job that i wouldn't do

  11. Seem's like the 1977 team is being forgotten. Finished 10-1, only losses were to #16 Miss St 17-16, who later forfeited, and to #20 Florida State 35-14. Wins over SMU, Memphis, Southern Miss, and Louisiana Tech. Was ranked #16 at end of season by UPI.

  15. i went back and used all my energy to parse though all you wrote...couple things...we don't know what's going to happen in september, just because you believe we won't have people, doesn't mean we wont. nascar had some fans last week and plan to have fans at talledega sunday. they also have plans to have up to 30 k at bristol on july 15. lone star park now has fans at the horses as other tracks across the nation. no fans this weekend at belmont for the derby, but don't say there are no fans at horseracing when there are fans. i have no idea what a quote of something i said is supposed to mean if you don't say anything...you're gonna have to take the time to explain it to me like i'm 5

  19. Yes he is. After a tough front nine to start the tournament where he was 4 over at one point, he has been playing really well. he is -5 for the day through twelve holes and -11 for the tournament. The current leader in the clubhouse is at -13. They have been showing Munoz quite a bit. He just started his round and is -1 through the second hole and -9 for the tournament.

  20. 4 year degree. Everything you listed are things most decent people can pass: physical exam, polygraph? written exam? How heavily scrutinized is that? Be honest. background check? Again, what did the individual do special here other than stay out of trouble like most Americans? oral board? Ok, pressure testing. Some validity there. Nothing you listed tests critical thinking. Which I think is a major problem. Bachelors degree minimum required, imo. Then 12months of training at the police academy with semi annual refreshers on de-escelation. And No, I don’t want the police disbanded.

  25. Well they are coming for the Texas Rangers now. Runnin Rebels about to be gone. I feel like I am back in China where they whitewash all history, all religion, international influence...and have created a “perfect” but quite sterile society. I guess that’s what America wants. Weird direction for an awesome country that is awesome because of its eclectic and interesting build and people. Thank goodness Mean Green doesn’t offend. Yet. GMG

  29. I can answer that. We don't think about it because we don't really care about the name that much. Probably because we are not asked to learn the history of the men the Posts are named for. They want you to know the history of the unit you are assigned to and I have never been in any unit that traces it's lineage back to the Confederacy. All my years in service, I never heard a black Soldier discuss Forts Hood, Benning, Bragg, Lee, Polk, Gordon, etc needing to be renamed. I am sure someone may have discussed it, but honestly most of us don't care about the names. People outside the Army care a hell of a lot more than Soldiers. I knew all those places were named for Confederates, but I kind of looked at it as they are dead and gone so never bothered me. We mainly care about whether the person to our left and right are going to do their job when it counts in combat whether that person is black or white or any shade between.

  30. I respect most of what you said, but that portion can't stand. That's just factually incorrect. The overarching cause of the Civil War may have been slavery, but that's not what drove the vast majority to fight (hell.. many were conscripts). The civil war only occurred a little over 70 years after the adoption of the Constitution. Folks were much more loyal to their states in those days and many still considered themselves citizens of separate little countries within a federal system. Calling them traitors isn't fair and frankly is counterproductive. Lincoln fully recognized this. Badmouthing people's ancestors isn't going to get people on your side and frankly helps poison the well of civil discussion. No. But he was unquestionably the major hero at the battle of Saratoga which was a vital victory for the patriots. I believe there is a statue of the leg he lost there to honor the part of him that remained a hero. 🙂

  39. I continuously see Bean labeled as our speedy QB, or that he has freakish athleticism, or he's a guy who could play WR for us..am I the only one who wonders where these labels came from and why he's the only one who gets them? Now, I'll admit I didn't actually see any of his game time from this past season as it happened, so my opinion is solely based on the film and facts I can find. What I see on film is a a player who is decently fast, but not freakish or breakaway speed. He has a 4.65 40 yard dash on record from HS, which is respectable but I'm not sure how much damage that could do as a college WR. Aune looks just as athletic in his HS tape, but the main difference is arm strength and that Aune gets away from pressure looking to throw while Bean looks to run. Since a few people were throwing their QB thoughts out there I figured I'd put mine out there as well and see if I was alone in wondering why we constantly describe Bean in this way. Just my opinion, and I would love to be shown something that could help me understand.

  46. I realize you are posting this as a extreme example to show how my thought process doesn't make sense -- but yeah. We have to examine everything and not just accept it unthinkingly. Like, for example. I think that college sports as we know them could easily be spun off into for-profit athletic clubs that compete professionally, that exist to benefit the university's academic mission. That would be a way to evolve the current model and not defended blindly. A North Texas Athletic Club Inc could sponsor professional teams in all the ones it sponsors now, and provide a path for professional development of its students. You could major in accounting, and get an internship at the Club. Major in sports management, and learn under someone actively doing sports management etc. It could still serve the mission without being the same thing we do now. I know a lot of you like to say "what is the big deal? Move on" -- well the same challenge can be put to you: what is the big deal with keeping it the same? Accept some evolution and move on.
