  5. The idea that a merger between C-USA and the Sun Belt is inevitable is ridiculous. Schools will cut, and cut some more, before this scenario ever happens. There are too many egos, too many lists, too many rankings, too much prestige (or lack thereof), and too many perceived or real slights that would ever allow this scenario to come about. Not saying the idea of a merger is right or wrong, but we're still a long way from this ever happening.

  6. "I am from Denton, Texas, and I will never let you or anybody else forget that," George said in a 1985 interview. "I am a small-town girl from a small town and a small-town family. If I hadn't come from Denton, I wouldn't be sitting here right now with this great job and my great husband and my beautiful children." Phyllis George

  11. She enrolled in TCU on a scholarship for Miss Texas winners but only for one semester. When she won the Miss America contest she left TCU after a few weeks and never completed any coursework. She never finished her degree as far as I know.

  16. every time I read a thread about conference alignment I come away thinking the MWC would be a better fit... also, to me it doesnt seem like the TV deal is worth it... who still has cable TV anyway?? why not allow the NCAA to produce all the sports content through its own app?

  23. If you were paying attention this was part of a conversation about the challenges of restarting college athletics in these times. When you bring people out of the houses and start interacting with people who may or may not have practiced safety then the risk of infection increases. I completely understand we can’t go on forever like this, but the countries that have had more open policies did a better job of containment early. We didn’t unfortunately. We have to increase tests and more importantly contact tracing.

  25. Phyllis George is a legend. Remember her well from NFL Today. Not sure how many folks know how big a deal it was to have a woman on the set of a major sports show. It was a huge deal, and she was truly a trailblazer. Really cool thing about her is she knew her stuff, and held her own on that set. Sorry to hear of her passing.

  26. Phyllis' dad worked for Moore Business Forms, Inc. in Denton for some time. TCU gave a scholarship to the Miss Texas winner and the winner was required to use TCU as their alma mater for press releases, etc. It was a blatantly deceptive move by the Miss Texas Pageant and TCU. Phyllis probably spent very little time at TCU.

  27. I did not know that about Mr. George, but was told by some (and I'm sure it's true) that when I was attending UNT, in the late 1970's, the man at the Library exit was the father of Shirley Cothran, Miss America 1975. I do know that Phyllis George's mother, Louise, worked in what was then the NTSU Art Department during that time. Seems like I remember her mentioning that she had been a model herself at one time. She was quite a strong woman in her own right. One thing about both those Miss America winners, they were from good Denton families, and never seemed to forget where they came from.

  28. We need to compare who we have on those weeks the will be playing Army. If we actually get to play our games, I like our schedule better. Sept. 10, 2022- Cal @ North Texas (I'm still waiting to hear that this game will happen, or that we are hosting a comparable P5) Sept. 16, 2023- Memphis @ North Texas (UTSA's game with Army is scheduled for Thursday the 14th, which means it's going to be on TV)

  29. I am no expert on virology, biodefense, or public health, although I did grad coursework in all at George Mason. I studied under Ken Alibek, who ran the USSR's offense bioweapons program, and many other brilliant scientist and policy experts. The program has moved from the Biology department to under the school of public policy, so the structure has changed to more of a policy focus, but that was my concentration anyway so my grad certificate looked more like the current version than the programs of my colleagues that were in the biology track. (https://schar.gmu.edu/prospective-students/programs/graduate-certificates/biodefense) I took courses on viruses, bacteria, toxins, and public health policy. But to date I have not directly used this educational background in my work, although it has come in handy recently. So therefore, I am not an expert. I just know quite a bit more than the average bear and have much better sources of information because of my work. And I learned excellent critical thinking and analytical skills during my time at UNT, so I try to research my sources and question motives behind language. I apologize for making a personal attack on you. I was frustrated and I do believe that some of the ideas behind put forward here by you and others is unhelpful and perhaps even counterproductive in overcoming the COVID-19 crisis. But making it personal also does not do anything to move us forward, so I am sorry for that.

  36. Catching back up. Grand says the most important thing. You can can pretty well rely on numbers for comparisons within a state and certainly within a system but once you try comparing between states things get really murky really fast.

  37. I find it strange that some fans criticize other fans because they want a regional conference. The value of a regional conference is not so much the ease of fans attending games, but the cutting of cost for team travel. Comparing private very well funded TCU with NT who primarily pays for its athletics through student fees and tuition is of little value. What CUSA could easily do, is just divide the conference into two divisions and require no scheduling between the teams in one division versus the other. The divisions would only complete at the championship level. I have no idea why we are wasting time debating the value of the MWC for NT in the most inopportune time in NCAA history. The MWC has no interest in going East or including NT.

  40. The problem is that people would chose a CUSA/SBC merger over the MWC if there was an option.

  41. They didn't have a choice? At first, but after succeeding in the WAC, they went to CUSA--when it was actually really good. Then, when the Big East took the CUSA teams that were worth it for their footprint (Louisville, Cincy, USF), TCU jumped ship as soon as CUSA added SMU, Rice, Tulsa, and others, and went to the MWC. Those were choices... And those choices allowed a Texas team to beat the hell out of Western-based teams with a lot of name recognition, leading to them getting into the P5. Other than Utah and Rutgers, TCU was the biggest winner in conference realignment. The raise they got was gigantic. We won't do this, wardly, so don't worry. Overwhelmingly, our fanbase prefers the SBCUSA setup--its not even close. We prefer games in Louisiana because we can bring 100 people to those venues. We love being able to READ our game articles in the newspaper on Sunday mornings. Time zones are very hard for us because of the Big West Conference we were a part of 20+ years ago. Other than the Big West days and the early SBC days, when we had Western teams in the league, we have played in a regional (non Western) conference for almost 40 years with this crew of teams for more than one season: SFA, SHSU, SW Texas State, UTSA, NMSU, UTEP, Rice, Nicholls State, McNeese State, Northwestern State, UL-Monroe, UL-Lafayatte, La Tech, Arkansas State, Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky, Marshall, UAB, Troy, South Alabama, USM, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Charlotte, and Old Dominion. Since this is what we have accepted, been forced to do, and preferred, its probably best that we recognize that playing in a conference with teams that have been good-to-great programs in the last 25 years (AFA, Wyoming, UNM, CSU, SDSU, Fresno, Utah State, Boise, Nevada, and Hawaii have all been ranked in that timeframe at some point) is too hard. The costs would be enormous to travel there, no doubt, and since we don't want to deal with those far-off venues, guys like me, who just believe that TCU gave schools like ours a blueprint, will just have to realize we are in the vast minority here--and make no mistake, we are in the vast minority. And, in a way to confirm that preference for the fanbase, it doesn't appear the MWC has even one iota of adding any CUSA teams anyway.

  42. The same risk liabilities can be applied to just about anything? What if they break their neck getting tackled, What if they trip and ruin a knee at the steps at the Super Pit? What if they get meningitis or staph from dirty showers and die? What if they get run over at the cross walk? What if they get killed driving in from College Station trying to make it on time for August practice? What if because of stress from school and sports especially from that position coach that’s never happy about anything they do....causes them to take their own life?...and on and on and on. Might as well never leave the house? Rick

  43. This is a legit question I've had many many years, but joined GMG last August and forgot to ask. Why don't we play SMU in Men's Basketball? I mean the last time we played them was in 02, but I don't understand why Wren or god forbid the SMU AD to try to schedule a series! I mean attendance would be great, TV is a maybe, the players would probably like it. I mean it just doesn't make sense. Is SMU scared?
