  1. Definitely. A lot of these transfers are guys who played for bad mid major teams and they want a taste of competitive basketball and a chance at the NCAA tournament. We are right in the sweet spot for these type of transfers because these players typically still want to start, so going to traditional major-conference at-large teams is a little riskier, and we still offer the chance to play in the NCAA tournament. Whether or not we go after them is another question. But this season was huge for recruiting. Obviously could have been even more but the fact is we won CUSA and the chance to play for that caliber of team for guys who were playing in worse conference for bad teams in those conferences, there is a lot of appeal here.

  2. The Iran-US Claims Tribunal acknowledged this as a debt that we owed. Obama did not voluntarily or willingly handed a bunch of free cash over to a known terrorist country. Maybe Obama could have ignored/delayed it. I think Trump would have just made a circus out of this. He probably wouldn't pay it, but it would be an idiot move. The debt was internationally recognized and would not just disappear. Was there interest on it? I don't know. I voted for Obama, but did not like some of his Presidential moves. Inversly, I am okay with some of Trumps efforts. Right now, I think the entire political environment is a mess. I wish Trump never had a mic again, that he'd just shut up and do his job. His language - unlike Obama - is mostly divisive (IMO). Not a man I would consider full of grace.

  3. A close friend's mother was exposed to a COVID-19 carrier; testing is being setup for her and those potentially exposed. A proper vaccine and anti-viral cant some soon enough. On other notes, looks like more parts of Texas are enacting shelter in place or similar. The more the better, really.

  5. Truthfully, I’d want most of them. But with only two spots currently left and a lot of guys on our bench who have not been proven rotation players, I’m not sure we can afford a guy sitting out a season. If we move on from guys like J Simmons, Mohamed, Alcindor, and maybe Wise (still has promise), then we could start talking about getting a guy or two who has to sit next season. I really like Anosike, Koval, and Pyle. They all would give us something we haven’t really had under Mccasland. Anosike would be the best rebounder we’ve had under Mccasland and that was a weak point at times last year. Plus he’s just a very good overall player. Koval would give us a legit shot blocker and rim protector, which we also haven’t had under Mccasland. And he can shoot 3s as a 7 footer so he could help with spacing. And Pyle would give us a legit sharp shooting forward, which we also have been lacking under Mccasland. 43% on 5.7 attempts per game is elite. Those three could also easily go to power conference schools, but I’d take any of them. So much of what happens this offseason hinges on guys like J Simmons, Mohamed, and Alcindor. Unless one of them takes a huge step forward, truthfully that’s 3 non-rotational caliber players at the CUSA level on the bench. But finding good transfer situations for them could really open things up for improving the roster, with the on-court momentum we built up.

  8. As much as I usually disagree with what you post you made one of the most important points about this virus. Pneumonia is not a "mild" symptom and it is the result of secondary infection from the effects of the virus (as far as I can tell as someone that isn't a medical professional). Not only that a "mild" case of pneumonia can easily turn into a severe case. I think our medical system (in the US) will treat pneumonia as a serious symptom and will try to hospitalize most people that have it, but based on what I've seen, that's what they tried in Italy and they are out of hospital beds in the most affected regions. We are going to see some pretty serious triage if this is all accurate. I hope I'm wrong. Even if you live through the pneumonia the lesions caused by the virus in the lungs causes permanent scarring. Stay away from people if you can. @FirefightnRick, keep doing good work and good luck. I hope the FD has enough PPE to protect you guys.

  9. Everything I'm hearing from online from scientists in epidemiology/virology is that 12-18 months is probably best case. There are no vaccines yet - there are vaccine candidates, some of which are in early testing. Those have to go through a lot of testing before being proven to be both effective and safe. Then once that happens it has to be produced. Don't expect a vaccine until at least 2021.
    2 points
  10. I read a couple things the last couple days from scientists/publications that any vaccine will take 12+ months to get to, no matter how much money you throw at it. I'm actually cautiously optimistic that Rick is right: when the 'want' is there, and we fuel it with necessary funds, humanity can accomplish some amazing things.

  13. I don't think we can go that extreme long term either - but we'll have to accept a larger death toll than would normally be acceptable.

  14. Hopefully officials in the U.S. come to the decision that that extreme is not necessary here in the majority of the country. Rick.

  16. Glad to see that NT is now in the MAC. Fair review, but I think NT is going to be much better than predicted. Assuming there is a 2020 season.

  17. It would be very disappointing to go into the season with only S,M,A as options. Big man would be awesome and if not another Deng! I think Bell will light it up with playing the right position. The quickness of Bell I could see us maybe running the floor a little more.(maybe) GMG

  18. To get to 5-7, that means beating Houston Baptist, UTEP, UTSA, Rice, and Charlotte, most likely. That seems to be the top end of what I would expect for 2020. Maybe we can steal a win over MUTS, as well, but I feel like we will probably lose 1 game out of the 6 I have listed. The other 6 teams are just better than us right now. Our QB is an unknown right now, our lines are nowhere near being good enough to play with the bigger and fast guys at A&M, SMU, UH, LT, USM, and UAB, and we are breaking in new coordinators again. I'll gladly take 5-7 or 4-8 this upcoming season. To me, this year will be about getting ready for a big season in 2021. If SL can do that in 2021, he can probably still be a hot commodity again for a job above us on the foodchain. If not, there's a very good chance that he will be done here.

  19. Verbal commits website is reporting that NT offered two players on Dec. 31, 2019 6'5 sg Brandon Murray, hs, Baltimore, MD 6'7 f Justin Amadi, hs , Simpsonville, SC Both are rated two star prospects and don't appear to have a lot of offers McCasland has shown to be a good judge of talent, so they probably have potential

  20. With respect to the comments about lasting 12-18 months, I believe that is actually the goal to spread this out over time. The primary risk, as I understand it, is the spike/surge that puts hospitals and the health care system under stress. If the impact is spread out over time, then it can be dealt with as we do the normal flu season. This is the "flatten the curve" objective. Could be wrong, but I don't think they mean what's going on now (shutdowns, shelter in place, etc.) is going to last 12-18 months, but that the virus will be around in some form or fashion for 12-18 months and at lower active case numbers can be managed.

  23. Brandon Murray has absolutely blown up since we came in with his first reported offer about 3 months ago. Now holds offers from schools like Va Tech, Georgetown, DePaul, Ole Miss, Wichita State, and multiple A10 schools. http://www.verbalcommits.com/players/brandon-murray-md Also, I found it interesting that Jareem Dowling retweeted this video on twitter posted by Nesbitt’s mom. We offered a good while back, but I wonder if that means we’re still actively recruiting him. Has a solid offer list that includes VCU. http://www.verbalcommits.com/players/amir-nesbitt

  28. McCasland’s contract also calls for a $10,000 bonus for earning a bid to the NIT. UNT earned a berth to the NIT by winning the C-USA regular season title. We should play this NIT bonus. McCasland would have added to his bonus earnings had the Mean Green enjoyed success in the postseason. His contract contains a $25,000 bonus for winning the conference tournament and earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. We should not play this NCAA bonus.

  31. Worked another 24 hour shift among millions yesterday. Everyone seemed to be moving about, going to work and doing their thing. Some good news on the research & findings towards a cure and prevention of covid19. The FDA and CDC hope to have a vaccine within a few weeks or less. Research using a combination of Chloroquine and Azythromiacin is showing promise in speeding up recovery and possibly a preventative? An interesting read on one of the clinical trials on that https://www.covidtrial.io We may be able to obtain tests readily enough that we’ll be able to test ourselves at home as early as next week? That would be incredible if the suppliers can pull that off? We’re gonna get through this. Rick

  34. I'm talking about people who wouldn't go to the hospital over it, so obviously it would be mild. If someone was sick enough to think they had pneumonia, I would think they'd go to a doctor.
    1 point
  35. it should be pointed out that "mild symptoms" were ostensibly established by the Chinese response during the initial Wuhan outbreak and included up to non-life-threatening pneumonia. many have discounted the severity of the virus upon hearing 80-90% of cases were "mild:
    1 point
  36. Obviously the real death rate is lower because plenty of people with mild symptoms will never be tested... THAT SAID - the current death rate for this world wide is sitting at 4% and the USA's rate is 1.6% - both are extremely grim if they continue anywhere near those numbers.

  40. I just got back from Germany yesterday. We were freaked out on Thursday morning after the travel restrictions were announced. It took 12 hours for Delta to call me back to change my flight. However, that didn't happen because of the fees to change airports was ridiculous. Our flight from Dusseldorf, Germany to Atlanta was maybe 40-50% full. When we arrived in Atlanta, the CDC boarded our plane and gave us a survey. After we filled it out, they gave me a PowerPoint that recommended I stay home for 2 weeks if I feel sick. After that we went through customs, and were on our way to DFW. People are freaked out more in the DFW area than Germany.

  41. On a good day, our hospitals are close to max and likely understaffed. Between that and major screwups in test availability and procedure, plus folks going out in large groups due to bad top level leadership, we might be in for a mess.

While they seem to have things contained there thanks to a fast, centralized response, they're still looking at a PPE sshortage. 46. I really like the Murray offer. 6’5” guard and it sounds like he’s a good shooter. There is very little out there on him so hard to know for sure, but that also plays in our favor of us hopefully getting an under-the-radar type recruit like him. It looks like both of their teams were in the Beach Ball classic in Myrtle Beach. We seem to do a lot of recruiting up there in e Carolinas and the DMV area. In this 2020 class we also offered Yuri Covington recently, a guard from Maryland, as well as Amir Nesbitt, a guard from Virginia, and Abou Ousmane, a 6’9” post from Brooklyn. Also offered Tariq Balogun from VA a class or two ago.
