  1. This all started in Texas with the legislature cutting higher education funding. Universities did not raise tuition for shits and giggles.

  3. The universities did this to themselves. I don't feel a bit sorry for them. The gov't gives out loans like candy and Universities pounced. The cost of tuition goes up and up and up. The gov't loans more. The universities keep on raising the price. Why not? Helluva business model. Get your money from gov't loans and leave the students to pay it back for the next 30 years. Oh, and then ask for them to give back? LMAO There's no gov't loans for donations going back to the university that just fleeced the very person they want to now "give back." As far as I'm concerned, you got your money from the graduate before they graduated. I would say you'll get a donation from me when I'm done paying off the outrageous tuition and fees you charged me. I graduated in 2000 with no debt by working during school and working extra in the summer. I literally wrote a check for my tuition and books with the money I earned over the summer. If memory serves it was....$2500 a semester or something? I paid rent, etc by working in school. Crazy to think about it being that low now. And then I got my MBA in 2005 (company paid for it). I can be critical of some things millennial and roll my eyes at times, but they're getting screwed by universities. I wouldn't have been able to graduate without loads of debt if tuition was as high as it is now. I love UNT but as a whole, college is such a scam today. The ROI is not as good for college degrees today... If I were a recent graduate I would give a big middle finger to them as well.

  4. Brune article on 247. This is a fantastic look at how Bell has unselfishly changed his game for the betterment of the team. Love players like this. The stat about our defense with him on the floor is telling as is the quote from Hamlet. https://247sports.com/college/north-texas/Article/North-Texas-Mean-Green-basketball-down-the-stretch-Thomas-Bells-importance-grows-as-sixth-man-144009467/ “I was more of a playmaker and scorer [in junior college], but when you have a team this good, you just want to fit in wherever you can,” Bell said. “For me, it was playing off the ball more and adding new things to my game and doing what the team needs me to do.” “It would be nice to have [the sixth man of the year], but I just want to win the conference tournament.”

  5. What you donate to, is everyone's choice. No one expects anyone to give that doesn't have the funds to do so. Schools certainly are not going to check everyone's finances before calling for donations. The caller is either a volunteer or a very lowly paid student just doing a job . Being upset because you were called is beyond stupid. Do you think if you had went anywhere else, that they wouldn't solicit you for donations? Just say thank you for the call, but I am not contributing at this time. They are used to hearing it.

  6. Why did you go to north texas? Plenty of other schools would have been cheaper., especially since you say that degrees are the norm. Dont blame the school for you having big monthly payments.

  7. Back in the 90s and early 2000s when I went to a lot of away games I would meet those home fans and pick their brains about giving back to their university. The overwhelming sentiment of those under 30 (and maybe even 35) was hell no. Especially Sun Belt schools but even at places like LSU and OU most younger alumni laughed at giving money to the school they just shelled out a lot of money to. I would think with how much tuition is today, that sentiment is even stronger. Not everybody is rah rah about their school, they just want the piece of paper and to be done with it. I work with a mid-forties guy who went to Idaho and follows Idaho sports. When he found out I donated money to UNT he kept asking me why and what for. To him, only rich people with extra money give to universities. He doesn't even make that connection to donate to Idaho. Good news is the school is reaching out to people. They can't say no if you don't ask.

  8. No need to respond. I recommend you give where you want to make your own impact. For your convenience and for anyone else thinking of giving that has not done so before you can give any amount. It all helps and it all counts towards alumni giving numbers, which helps out national rankings in places like US News. $10 matters. 11. That is not true, no part of tuition is used for athletics. Tuition have risen for several reasons that a simple read of any number of studies will confirm: - states cut funding due to budget issues - significant increase in demand for college education. It’s nearly a requirement now to have a degree - increase demand = increase price - increased financial aide. More money available so colleges can charge more. other costs related to attending college have risen also, but not at the same rate as tuition.

  16. Do you think it was some conspiracy to hike up tuition? Did they just arbitrarily decide that it would be fun? The Texas legislature cut funding so tuition went up. At the same time funding formulas rewarded growing student populations which triggered the college arms race (needing to construct new dorms and such plus building expensive recreation centers and student unions and the like to attract students). Thus student fees also went up. Easy access to loans, however, made a free market approach somewhat irrelevant, since students could “afford” the rising costs by taking on debt. But please don’t act like universities just wanted to charge more. ———————— “Since higher education funding is discretionary, increases in funding usually come in years when Texas’ economy is strong. It’s also often the first place to see cuts when the economy is on a downturn. Tuition deregulation was done in 2003 in part to make up for higher education cuts made as lawmakers tried to address a $10 billion deficit without raising taxes. In 2011, higher education saw another round of budget cuts after the housing crash.” “There’s only so much funding available after the state makes its required payments. Officials often say the state essentially “backs into” a total number for higher education within the overall general revenue without much wiggle room unless they decide to increase funding. The state then uses formulas to distribute that allocated pot of money across all public universities. Formulas are based on the number of classes universities provide and semester credit hours are weighted depending on the class. For instance, a nursing or engineering class costs more to teach than an English or philosophy class, because they can require expensive equipment and lab space.” “One thing is clear: since deregulation, every Texan attending college in-state has seen their tuition bill increase. Between 2003 and 2017, the statewide average total academic charges increased 138 percent. At the same time, state investment in higher education declined by six percent when adjusted for inflation.” “Last year, Texas students graduated college with an average of almost $27,000 in student debt...about two times more than when deregulation took effect.“ https://alcalde.texasexes.org/2019/01/looking-at-higher-education-funding-in-texas-and-how-we-got-here/ “While the underlying concept of deregulation makes sense in more traditional free markets, proponents of the law in Texas failed to take a key factor into account: the explosion of readily accessible student loan debt.“ ”Since 2003, tuition and fees at Texas public universities have more than doubled, and designated tuition (the portion of tuition set directly by the universities) has increased an astounding 222 percent.” https://www.statesman.com/news/20161128/sen-schwertner-how-tuition-deregulation-is-failing-texas-students https://www.texasmonthly.com/burka-blog/taking-on-tuition-deregulation/

  17. I graduated in 2018. I take advantage of the Young Alumni discount program but intend to up my gift every year.... be it only a small gift now. They do not require much to take advantage of the program and its goes for 5 years. Its an easy way to get on board without digging too deep into your pockets.

  18. The main objective is to get recent graduates involved. Maybe $10 or $20 a year for the first five years with benefits that out weigh the cost. Also give a chance for recent grads to network with current alumni. Networking is the key for career opportunities for all! GMG

  19. Elementary, dear Rick. The statement was: a wall "funnels people to the legal points of entry and allows Border Patrol to focus on certain areas." I'm here to tell you that if people want to cross into our country illegally, they will not be doing so where they have a greater chance of being caught. I would think this is understood. So if the idea is to build a wall, then re-allocate patrols to areas of "legal points of entry", that will leave the wall standing there unprotected/un-patrolled. People will go over or under to get in. You must realize, many of the folks crossing over are desperate people. They will do anything to flee the crises they're coming from.... but they won't just waltz up to the Del Rio checkpoint station and just hope they can get by.

  20. I’ve suggested this before. Here’s a painless way to donate. If you buy anything from https://amazon.com (and who doesn’t), buy it from https://smile.amazon.com instead and select the UNT Foundation as your charity. All the same products, no change in the price you pay, but a small portion of your order goes to your charity. Easy peezy.

  21. When you give to the university, it actually benefits you. When you decide to go to a university, you accept the landscape that there are a lot of other people with degrees from other universities. Those universities all aggressively raise funds. If your university does not aggressively raise funds, the value of the other universities' degrees will be relatively higher than yours. But most young people do not understand these sorts of things. We have strength in numbers. So if everyone gives a little, it adds up to a lot. So give a little, every year consistently. It's for your own good! 🙂

  27. Which is why if I was the University I would focus on getting those new graduates attending games and coming back to campus for fun events rather than having a hand out immediately. The AD has put some effort into doing that but not sure the school itself does. I would give every graduate a free subscription to the North Texan for five years.

  28. (time to roll your eyes, because here comes the history lesson....for the umpteenth time) According to wiki the UNT current endowment is 192 million. The endowment fund was started under this Presidents tenure..... Calvin Cleve ‘Jitter’ Nolen 1971-1979 During Nolen’s time as president, major construction projects included Wooten Hall, the Art Building, the General Academic Building and the expanded Union. The Coliseum opened in time for the 1973-74 basketball season. The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth was placed under Nolen’s direction in 1975. He previously served as vice chancellor for development at Texas Christian University. I worked for the University from 1972 to 1973 and what one knowledgeable person told me at that time was that "Jitter" Nolan was only hired to jump start the fund raising program. Because he was known as a very good fund raiser. Before Nolan (and John Kamerick) arrived, giving back to the University was strongly discouraged, if not forbidden by this guy...... James Carl Matthews 1951-1968 As president, Matthews guided the college through its desegregation, beginning with the admission of the first African American graduate student in 1954 and undergraduate students in 1956. The college awarded its first doctorate in 1953 and became North Texas State University in 1961. Almost 15,000 students were enrolled when Matthews retired. An alumnus, he was the college’s first education dean and had served as director of the teacher demonstration school. The Mean Green club was started by Hayden Fry, and he arrived in 1973. A brief comparison..... Texas State was founded in 1899 and their endowment is 204 Million University of Houston was founded in 1927 and their endowment is 959 Million So for the first 78 years of this institutions existence GIVING WAS NOT A TRADITION AND/OR EXPECTATION. When Hayden Fry left and then shortly after that "Jitter Nolan" was run out of town on a rail, guess who took over...... the minions of Dr. Matthews. They couldn't resend the creation of the endowment fund or the Mean Green club. But it's my belief that they are responsible for continuing the culture of non-giving to this University. So, as someone has already implied, when a certain generation is gone, giving back to the University will be a much more acceptable notion.

  29. Two of my kids went to UCONN, third is at UNT. I was getting calls for donations while my kids were still in school. Kids started getting them as soon as they graduated. I still get them from UCONN. Hello, I just finished sending a *&^%-load of money to you. I didn't go to UCONN, why would I donate more money? I feel sorry for the students that are doing their best to stay on script asking for money. The conversion rate must be incredibly low. I started getting calls from UNT a few years ago. When I tell them I already donate the response is, "that's fantastic, would you consider a donation of $100 a month?" I already donate. "Could you do $75 at month?" I already donate. "What about $50 a month?" Point is, UNT is doing what they all do and I'm sure just about every recent graduate from every school that gets hit up for money feels the same way. Give people some time to get their feet under them.

  30. Thanks for the compliment. I worked my way through school and also had some help from scholarship money. I understand not maybe not being able to give immediately after graduation, but posting Nicholson shooting the finger is uncalled for. UNT students have never been conditioned to give back. I have been called to give at times in my life when I just couldn't swing it, but I wasn't upset or mad they were asking.

  31. This is why I like the AD’s program for free tickets and $25 donation levels. Establishing the connection and even a small level of giving early is a great approach. I highly support asking recent grads to give $10 a year for the first five years. @GMG_Dallas would you give 10?

  32. Even then, inheritance turning you rich only matters for those who have wealth in their families. For those few, student loan debt doesn't exist anyways. For the majority, there is no inheritance to fallback on.

  33. Agree we need to do a better job in the detaining facilities, but they were never intended for the amount of people that are coming. The organized efforts to encourage and get people here have overwhelmed they system, especially when people kept saying there were no issues. There are a number of things that need to be done. If those idiots on both sides would actually work together they could improve things quickly. And yes, Mexico helping to control the flow has helped to reduce the amount of people.

  34. --- The mostly likely way to get two bids ( to me) is the regular season champion fails to win the conference tournament... so both are likely to get in... if the regular season team has a good record. . I think the bonus games are worthless.

  35. Yes, Texas cut funding but that is not the major reason that costs have soared. Sports play a part as that so called institution funding has to come from somewhere. Most of it comes from student tuition Add the costs of all the services and added infrastructure that has been added over the decades. . Much nicer buildings and student recreational facilities. This all has been fueled by the easy access of student loans as noted.

  38. Just wondering, once they implement the one-time automatic eligibility rule will this change the Grad Transfer rule? Would a player be able to transfer once as an undergraduate and then again as a Grad transfer?
    1 point
  39. Agreed, however if this rule was in place Guyton would have used his one time transfer already to come straight from Notre Dame to UNT and would not have been eligible to utilize this again. So we could have had an extra year of Guyton if this rule was in place, sounds like a positive to me!
