  1. This is my point. Leavitt is the level of hire we should have aimed for, and why I question the Bowen hire. The down voters on here won't like reading this, but hires like Leavitt are why FAU has two C-USA conference titles and we don't.

  2. Seeing that FAU just hired Jim Leavitt as their new DC, I’m officially underwhelmed by our hire. That’s a peer program. We gotta aim higher.

  3. Interesting. How high up? Athletic department admin or university admin? Kiffin and some on his staff had baggage when FAU hired them. Now they have 2 C-USA titles and we have jack. Liberty hired Freeze (baggage) this year and they are bowling (and winning) as I type this.

  4. Seems like the perfect match for SMU based on support.

  6. Wasn't a huge amount of money though. SMU laughs at their efforts.

  7. Halftime with this score and the Owls get the ball in the 2nd half. Go CUSA. Pony Down!

  8. Then we’re not serious about winning.

  9. 1 of those names is ready to be here just can't get admin to approve it..... Those dang ghosts from the past..

  10. Now this I can’t argue, the Snyder suggestion I could dispute but not this one.

  11. You are aware that NT was fourth in CUSA in both offensive yards and scoring. Must have had a really talented skill group to do that with no blocking.

  12. Recruiting. Just signed 5 OL.

  13. If I’m reading your post correctly, you first said that KU doesn’t recruit well. Then you followed that up saying that despite that terrible recruiting many of those players went on to play in the NFL. The point you’re trying to make is that he coached them up, and that may be true individually, but more likely is that he’s a good recruiter first and foremost. Nobody that makes it in the NFL is lacking for natural talent.

  14. Wait, you are telling me that another former SWC school is still cheating? Shocking.

  15. I know of one that can. For whatever reason, controversy just happens to get overlooked at that place but when they suck and other Texas P5 schools are doing well, an interesting amount of scandal and violations seem to pop up at those other schools. It's the darnedest thing.

  16. Thank you for responding and yes I think Bowen has been more successful with what they had to work with.

  17. Reffett made less than 300k last year, there is a reported salary pool bump, but if he can make that money or close to it being a low risk assistant at a P5 school why would he come here? Let's be realistic, CUSA is the 7th or 8th best conference in football, a 54 year old assistant who probably isn't trying to be a HC again isn't going to take a downward career path and less salary for this job. As for "great" Texas ties, I'm not sure I would qualify 3 of your 30 coaching years being in Texas or even close to the state of Texas as great. And winning in the best conference..not sure I would call it that. He had a Heisman trophy winner on the other side of the ball his first 2 years, really works wonders for the defense. As for his only year without Manziel well: "After the season, which was marred by defensive struggles, Sumlin dismissed his defensive coordinator, Mark Snyder." Edit: I'd like to add I found that Bowen was making 500k at KU, so my money argument is not as relevant. Point still stands that backed by the 16th, 9th, and 5th nationally ranked classes Snyder was able to get himself fired. Anybody else that would be a good hire for you?

  18. So are we going to actually use TEs this year?

  19. I have no answer, but damn it, I will bitch nonstop about whatever UNT or SL does. It is what I am good at. Bitch with no solution.

  20. A) Please stop replying to BenGooding. It negates the ignore function. B) This guy should be fine. Not a major splash but a solid hire with a ton of experience doing less with more. C) If the offense had been better, our defense did enough to get us to 6-6 this season. Don’t know if you remember but the most they gave up in those two games was 26. I would take that as an average for the year. All this to say is that if this offense is clicking, all we need is an average defense to get a handful of stops each game. That is if we get an OC that clicks with Seth and score over 30 each game as we are supposed to. So let’s welcome Coach Bowen, stop feeding trolls, and find a friggin OC! (And another defensive lineman nor two.)

  21. Not sure if anyone else watched the state championship tonight but this kid just looked great against a really good Denton Ryan team, winning game MVP in the process. Only one offer currently from Texas Southern..I imagine he will start blowing up this summer but really hope the staff takes a look at him early. https://247sports.com/Player/Kyron-Drones-46081020/ https://www.hudl.com/video/3/10379757/5d6e7dd05ca94d10e0c37954

  23. Thank you!!! This is what I've been saying as well. There were and are legitimate DC candidates out there to get and we've talked about the increase in budget. How is it FAU gets the likes of Kiffen, briles as an OC and Leavitt as a DC but we're getting history of subpar guys. Guys on the fourm love to say look at his experience, I look at his results. They ain't good

  24. Against UAB we looked small. Against FAU we would look slow! They got the Quick’s for sure.

  25. No. Fans have a right to express how they feel about a hire. If the administration doesn't want fans "crapping" on their hire, than they should make better hires. Look, I hope Bowen fields a top 10 defense next season. I really do. But, his recent history does not indicate that will be the case. I want proven FBS winners at these coordinator positions. Our program is at a point where we will either correct our misfortunes and get back to bowling, or collapse and be condemned to another decade of bottom-feeding. I'm not happy gambling our future on a "change of scenery" building us a respected defense. The fact that on the same week FAU has apparently schooled us at hiring a guy for the same position really stinks. There is no way to spin it in our favor. I thought Littrell could have found a better DC, and he should have. I doubt their is a UNT fan on this board that actually believes Bowen is better than Leavitt. Can we not hold our coach to the same standard as FAU? Is that really too much to ask? By the way, I didn't give you the down vote. I don't work like that. +1 to even you up.

  27. Agree. We can still make a statement with the OC hire. Mangino or Briles would accomplish that.

  28. I am entirely uninspired by this choice. That said, we pretty much did hit rock bottom so it's an upward move. I'll give it a year but I suggest Bowen invest in a nice camper and don't get too comfortable.

  29. No rumors yet? We didn't hire Reeder until Feb last year. I don't know how he is gone and Langston is still here. Hard to run any offense when there is no blocking.

  31. We are all in wait and see mode. It's all we can do. I gave you what I believe to be a better hire (Mark Snyder). Do you think Bowen has been a more successful DC?
    2 points
  32. Sure I have an idea. I just have to look at the collective evidence. Bowen had a really memorable season at Kansas when he was co-defensive coordinator, 13 years ago, back in 2007. But, since then he has had much less success. His defense gave up 30 points a game in his lone season at UNT. And, in his most recent stop as Kansas' DC, their team managed to win 6 games from 2015-2018. Look, I have nothing against him, but based on his recent lack of success, I see nothing wrong with questioning this hire.

  33. They way I look at it, people are going to complain, especially in this day of "guilty" until we think your not. He is cleared by the NCAA. If he is the best candidate available try and get him.

  34. Context matters. I actually like throwing in some under-recruited kids in each class provided the proper context. If it’s a Mason Fine, Booger Kennedy, or Brelan Chancellor type where the player has the talent and ability but they are being passed over because of height, I like those type of pickups. But when it’s a 6’ cornerback or a 6’4” 300 lb linemen and they aren’t picking up offers because of ability, that’s more concerning.

  35. 2017 Kansas results. That's year 3 in the system. Someone mentioned this isn't close to Cosh b/c Cosh had given up 41 to a terrible UNT team. You might want to look, again. Pick any year he was DC at KU and you're going to see similar results and scorelines. I'm not going to say that he'll definitely fail here. He did have decent success at WKU and I do remember that first McCarney team. We'll certainly force more turnovers under Bowen than we did this last season. Littrell is from the Leach tree, which is a tree that believes it just needs a couple more possessions per game than opponents to win. The priority on defense is on getting turnovers and only needing a few stops a game. Bowen is probably a good fit for that. Those hoping for more than that, and for a more dominant defense take the field are going to be underwhelmed by this hire. Again, this probably fits the philosophy Litrrell is going for. It just ain't for me. I'll be there in the stands, regardless.

  37. If you think that Seth is going to risk his head coaching career by hiring a "he'll do" coordinator, you must not be thinking clearly. You do understand that if Seth continues to fail here, he will be stuck as a G5 OC or P5 position coach for awhile before he can move up again?

  38. So let me get this right. One of our biggest weaknesses on defense has been the secondary. Seth goes out and hires a guy with 15 years experience coaching either secondary or linebackers in the Big 12. Who was retained by Les Miles in the same position. So the hire sucks? I do have green colored glasses, but I am looking at a guy that has had to prepare and game plan for some of the best offenses in the BCS. In a conference that averages 433.3 yards per game (259.6 yds/game in passing). Hell the worst team in the Big 12 averaged 321 yds/game and 248.7 in passing. In 2018 the Jayhawks let the Big 12 in turnovers and had the second best turnover ratio in BCS (16 interceptions). Overall the pass defense that Coach Bowen was most responsible for was top 5 behind Oklahoma, Baylor, TCU and KState this year. His Safeties accounted for 143 tackles as they took up the slack for a line that I could have rushed for 100 yards against. He is known as a recruiter. He also knows and has worked with Seth. For those who say he sucked in 2011 so he still sucks. Really, if I took your first year at a new position and judged you on your results from 8 years ago...when you worked with a 1st year coach. Come on... he was hired to work with a ground and pound coach who consistently put the defense in horrible position. Oh and that team which was in my opinion led by the defense had the best record UNT has seen in 6 years and it regressed the next year after he left. I have no idea how the hire will turn out but, on the surface this hire checks a lot of the boxes that we need. It fails to check a few but I can not expect a perfect candidate (they do not exist). All in all personally think that this was not an exciting hire but I do think it is a good hire.
