  1. Congrats to the Mean Green. Tough game to watch as a UTA fan. Maybe one of worst games we've played at home in a long time on a night where UNT could do no wrong. We had no answer for your height and skill in the paint (Goodman and Deu especially). UNT had no problem getting the ball into paint for easy layups. And whatever shots UTA or UNT missed, UNT was getting easy rebounds. We are not a tall team at all and having our 6'8" center Jabari Narcis pick up 2 quick fouls early really hurt our ability to score and defend the paint. A lot of fouls being called on both teams all night. Good luck the rest of the way, best wishes for a successful season

  4. What about Mark Mangino to run the offense? Not currently employed. Successful coach at a hard place to win but wouldn’t be the head guy here. Already has a good relationship with Seth and likely enough skins on the wall that Seth would trust him to run the offense and call plays.

  9. Just remember when you analyze this to consider if the fired head coach was an offensive or defensive mind and also when analyzing the defense, what type of offense his team was running. For example, Gary Deloach looked a lot better on paper when he had a Darrell Dickey offense on the other side of the ball than he did with a Todd Dodge offense on the other side.

  10. Not to be combative, but what makes you think he wasn’t/isn’t ready? His first year at USC resulted in improving from 26 ppg to 33 ppg. Say what you will about his last year here and the 2nd half woes but there was a definite drop in offensive effectiveness this year for UNT.

  12. Agree 100% I am one the tapped out. I did the season ticket thing but now I just donate what I can afford and go to individual games. I just want go to games in November with 5 wins and a conference title still in reach consistently. Once we get that consistency then the demands to make the next step would be more reasonable. If only Cowboys fans withheld their money demanding excellence like some UNT Alumni and fans do. (Ironic because many UNT Alumni will spend big money on mediocre Cowboys teams but will complain to no end about an extra $5 for anything at Mean Green game.) I never liked he 3-3-5 and Seth's affinity for that defensive scheme concerned me from the start. It is a versatile formation for attacking pass happy spread teams but it shouldn't be the base defense. Maybe if you had 3 of the best DL monsters from Dickey's era with no depth behind them I could see running that as your base. Otherwise I prefer the traditional nickel maybe with one undersize LB with speed.

  13. Matthew Brune is a current student at UNT and covers UNT games, HS football games for the DRC, and writes for https://247sports.com/college/north-texas/. He's around the team often and provides an inside look. I'm a regular listener of his Brune's Breakdown Podcast and it's definitely worth a listen for all UNT fans. Let's not trash UNT content creators because in reality we need more of them if we want to grow our student fan base and sell out Apogee.

Thought it could be useful to have a thread dedicated to watching the Transfer Portal: The most comprehensive listing I can find is on 247: https://247sports.com/Season/2020-Football/TransferPortal/ Some guys at positions of need who may want to come closer to home: https://247sports.com/Player/Grant-Tisdale-90288/ - QB https://247sports.com/Player/DK-Blaylock-46052943/ - WR https://247sports.com/Player/Kellen-Diesch-36475/ - OL <- Hello, if we haven't already reached out here, we're doing something wrong. https://247sports.com/Player/JP-Urquidez-35185/ - OL https://247sports.com/Player/Mark-Brown-94334/ - DT https://247sports.com/Player/Blake-Barron-46038516/ - LB https://247sports.com/Player/Scooby-Carter-46038477/ - CB https://247sports.com/Player/Brian-Bullock-36519/ - CB https://247sports.com/Player/Dayven-Coleman-93786/ - S https://247sports.com/Player/Kris-McCune-94025/ - S https://247sports.com/Player/Omar-Hicks-Onu-70995/ - S Some guys with connections to current NT players: https://247sports.com/Player/Deneric-Prince-46041069/ - RB https://247sports.com/Player/Brian-Johnson-91963/ - S

  16. My first time to the new arena and I must say that I was impressed with the UTA gameday. They really make the experience interactive and lively. I like how bright the arena is too. The beer was cold and the game was fun. I went to the stage and this was a whole different experience. Great job Mean Green. UTA thank you for the hospitality. GMG

  17. Good solid win, against an up and down UTA team. This UTA team only lost by 6 to Gonzaga in Spokane. Thought UTA's Warren had the best game of both teams players. NT with 5 scoring in double digits was just a lot more balanced team. Best game by Zack Simmons this year. If he can duplicate that throughout the season, NT will be tough to handle. Without Draper's threes, NT could have easily lost this game. NT has a solid starting four, now if Reese could just get going

  18. I’ve seen 2 things in particular in this thread that I hope Littrell doesn’t share the same viewpoint on. Reeder didn’t fail bc he came from an FCS school , he failed because he called bad games and consistently put our best players in very tough situations to succeed. I hope Littrell isn’t scared to go the FCS route again because of Reeder. Not saying that’s the route we should go, but excluding those guys from consideration just because Reeder failed is short sighted and eliminates a lot of potential good hires for no real reason related to their own merit. The other thing is that paying big boy money is the direction this has to go. The most expensive and qualified candidate we can get is definitely not guaranteed to be the best man for the job. I hope Littrell’s focus is on the best man for the job and not who is the most expensive guy we can afford to hire.

  19. now when can we expect Langston to be shown the door, his OLines have been horrible
    5 points
  20. Short timing routes were our bread and butter on first and second down and those disappeared with the Reeder hire. We were always facing 3rd and long, and we didn't exactly have a dominating OL that could block efficiently for that. Mason was trying his darndest and getting killed for it.

  21. You have to look at the full list to see all the teams. 247 only shows 5 on their initial recruiting page Nuss had 9 FBS offers (UAB, WKU, Air Force, Army, Georgia State, Louisiana Lafayette, Louisiana Monroe, Troy, and UTSA) https://247sports.com/Recruitment/Patrick-Nuss-99455/RecruitInterests/ Ragland has 7 FBS offers from a pretty impressive group (UAB, SMU, Southern Miss, FAU, Kansas, Louisiana Lafayette, and Troy) https://247sports.com/Recruitment/Colby-Ragland-113807/RecruitInterests/ So more highly recruited than you’re making them out to be. Nuss and Ragland were more highly recruited than any offensive lineman we have on scholarship. But also not the gold standard in the conference. UAB was 10th in the conference in scoring offense and 1st in scoring defense. What separated them from the competition this year was their defense. We won the Division in 2017 with an average at best offensive line. Doesn’t mean we can’t benefit from better recruiting at that position.

  22. Whoever it ends up being, I REALLY wish they could bring this bearded guy out of retirment and on staff as an off-field consultant . Watch them swarm to the ball. After realizing that Walters was here in 2013, I'd be ok with him coming and calling for guidance from Skladany.

  23. The waiting four days to respond while posting 15 times in the last 19 hours alone really confirms that you are a young, vibrant busy man with a lot going on. I hope your family is ready for your exciting updates on Christmas. Maybe you'll see a bird with highly describable feet or something equally compelling.

  24. He'd put a little bit of mean asshole in this coaching staff too. Not that it's always a good thing, but for team that talks about being disciplined, they sure don't play like they'll be punished for not being disciplined. His offenses were typically effective Makes me laugh at the fake rumor about him becoming the HC when we hired Seth.

  26. I’m all for getting the best guy possible and not selling ourselves short, but I think it’s a pipe dream to believe we could get Briles, Orlando, or Strong. I just can’t imagine any of those guys would take a G5 coordinator position. That being said, I’d love nothing more than to be wrong and announce Briles as OC and either of the other two as DC.

  27. I think OC will be filled first. The fact that Reeder was fired after his first season and not given any leeway has me thinking that SL may already have his replacement lined up. 🤔

  33. Wait a minute.....due to circumstances I listened to more games than I saw this year but the ones I did see I never saw a sideline shot where it looked like SL was calling the plays. Every head coach on TV that I see that is calling the plays is obviously calling the plays. Shouldn't be a mystery.

  34. I know this isn't a precise analytic but what I always watch for is situational play calling. The third and medium ranges, red zone play calling, short yardage situations and the like. From my eye Reeder was bad. Very bad. Harrell frustrated me with the short yardage play calling but at least he was decent in the other ranges. Reeder was throw the hat at the TV bad. Kudos to SL for pulling the trigger on something that wasn't working.

  36. He also made that improvement at USC with a freshman starting QB after their initial starter went down in game one with a knee injury. I will eat crow and admit that I thought Reeder would be an upgrade over Harrell, but man was I wrong. I would love to see Graham back here, but I think that ship has sailed.

  37. Good complete game. I was really happy to see us attack the paint and not sit at the 3pt line and throw up last second shots!

  38. I think Strong would be a decent DC hire for a P5 but at this rate until he builds his resume back up he's not going to be a darling. That being said his last few years have not been great. He might be desperate enough and be enticed by the prospect of literally having the run of the mill on the defensive side of the ball so to speak.

  43. You aren't wrong there. I feel like we are usually nicer to those from other boards than we are to each other here. Such is the passion of fans! (and I love that the first response to your post was... an eye-roll). Always allowed to have an opinion here, as long as it's someone else's preferred opinion Back to on topic, I'm still a little concerned Langston is hanging around, but maybe that's one of those rolls that doesn't get a lot of post-firing publicity. Saving that last shot of scotch from today's celebratory plastic jug for that announcement. Oh who am I kidding. It was Jim Beam in a toddler take n' toss bottle.

  45. Crank up the coordinator pay and nab 'lil Briles (who will soon be looking for a job) and recently-released Todd Orlando from UT.
    3 points
  46. Yup. I hated all the window dressing we did. It was detrimental. Double fake handoffs 8 yards behind the LOS was fooling no one and all it did was give the pass rush more time to disrupt the play and so many times it seemed like Mason was throwing from 10 yards or more behind the LOS. Just a hard product to watch all year.
    3 points
  47. Feeling good about all 5 of them. We have a lot of promising young linebackers but I think Brown is going to establish himself as a starter pretty early on in his career. Signing classes like this is how you put yourself in position to win CUSA championships.
