  6. Mr Smith is correct that RV was “involved” in the hiring process. He flew around the country interviewing people that were never going to be hired. Withers, Helton, and Scott Frost to name a few. The head coach was identified in October and RV flying around was a smoke screen The Chairman of the Board of Regents and the President of the University made the hire. They wanted offense and excitement as well as a young coach that could relate to high school kids and the system most Texas high schools run. Seth is a damn good ball coach. This year was always going to be difficult replacing all the coaches that moved on last year. Additionally, despite having a 4 year starter at QB this team is fairly young in game experience. I would also say Seth is trying to build a program by signing high school kids. Building trust with high schools in Texas and Oklahoma. He’s not going for the SMU or K-State quick fix of Juco and transfers that can just as easily backfire as be successful. Good will will go a long way and 2 years from now this team will be special and the pipeline in place for years to come This is a New Denton The correct people are in place and athletics has amazing support from a great President Now it is time for this team to grow up These inexperienced players have 5 games under their belt so it’s time to improve in the bye week beat southern miss

  7. As disappointed as we ans are about a couple of the losses this year, after a LONG off-season program, draining fall camp, and the strain of balancing school and football this fall, clearly those young men had expectations for the first 5 games that haven't come to fruition. Hopefully the IPF will lift some spirits and the bye week will help to hit the reset button. The goals of winning conference and a bowl game are still in reach.

  9. The tailgating/gameday experience at Apogee is one of the best in the conference now. Keep playing as many Texas-based schools as possible, and the program benefits and things like rivalries and must-see games keep developing. UNT should play home and homes with Houston/SMU/Texas State/Baylor/TCU as often as possible. Alumni are close by, it's a great opportunity for fans to travel, helps recruiting, and helps build the program.

  10. This is not the same old North Texas. When I was there in the 80's we made sweet lemonade out of spoiled fruit. The 90's saw that drama continue with the swing back up to tougher competition. Then there was the stress and bipolar relationship of the early 2000's, where we walked around with swagger in the Belt and dreamed of beating a big boy or name program. Then came the disaster which I can't digest or discuss on a week like this. Now we are at the end of the 10's and we are a really different program from a leadership and facilities perspective. It kind of reminds me of TCU's rise when they were rising and would suffer some devastating, rip the intestines out of the fanbase losses to Utah, Boise - the Baylor debacle that kept them from winning the NC. Yet they kept getting back up off the mat and charging forward. We are not at TCU's level, and frankly that program seems to have stalled a bit. However, the elation and pain will keep us coming back and I do not believe we won't ever see another great QB at UNT. Fine has been magical and the time has gone fast. But this is still a dream system for some talent out there. This is an awesome stepping stone program or more if they want it for a great coach. Seth and Mason will hopefully finish strong and ride into the sunset with us cheering and celebrating strong. Then we return to the Hill to see what excitement the 20's brings. GMG

  15. I believe Mason can lead us to a conference championship. CUSA is winnable. I hope they take some time over the break to remember we have Tight Ends (thought they were going to be used more). I think this also stings since it seemed to have come so easy the last two years. To go from were we had been to back-to-back 9 win seasons - we had arrived!!! Well the truth is it's not as easy as it seemed, but now we have set the bar so high a seven win season will seem like we have failed.

  19. The California law does not have the schools paying any money to the athletes. It just allows them to make money like any other popular college kid. If a dealership sponsor wants to pay Fine to show up on a Sunday and sign autographs so they can try to sell a few more cars, who has a problem with that? This only really applies to a hand full of players. This law also gets you around the whole title IX argument that if you pay the football players, you have to pay the girls track team the same amount.

  20. College football is really on a slippery slope now. They have the same programs always competing for a national championship and it gets very boring. Also, the money these networks pay these big conferences influences advertisers so imagine when AT&T decides to not only sponsor the Big XII but their CEO is an OU Alum (just an example) and decides to sponsor their 5-star QB prospect if he agrees to go to OU. That’s not even what the NFL deals with their players being drafted and owned by the team. I’ll take normal, historical college football over the current situation of paying players above their scholarships anytime...
    3 points
  21. I see no problem with advertisers being able to pay college kids for their name and likeness. As far as paying players goes? That is a tricky question. You say “but they get their school paid for”. Most elite college athletes don’t want the education to begin with but are forced to enter college because it is the only realistic path to professional football. The NFL is the real winner here because the NCAA is a free farm system for them. Im in the extreme minority here but I say if the P5s want to pay big salaries to cfb players, I say let them. Let them cannibalize each other and let the G5 stay pure. Perhaps even eliminate scholarships entirely to got to a true “student-athlete” system.

  22. What if schools just stopped giving athletic scholarships? Pay them the hourly rate that most college students get while working like most college kids do. You work over 40 hours, you get overtime. But if you don't get an academic scholarship...you don't get your school paid for. I can't believe how much people trivialize the value of the scholarship. Most kids graduate with crushing debt. Scholarship athletes don't. So take it away but remove the barriers to work more. Let them work during the summer....also anytime you're doing a team required activity, "punch in." We'll pay you for football but you pay for tuition and room and board, etc. How would they like that? They would come out WAY behind. (Like most college students) As for switching companies, the "company" is college football. The different schools are the "departments." So your choice is either play college football or don't. If playing college football is such a horrible experience for the athletes that are getting their school paid for....quit. Pay for you own school and go work somewhere. (like most college students do). Guess what...the company you go work for after school is gonna make a lot more money than you do. Don't like it? Yes you can leave. Then go to another company....they're going to make more than you too. This is not about helping the poor starving student athlete....this is about someone else is making more and people hate it. Better for everyone to have less money than anyone to have more. If the school didn't use Mason Fine's likeness as much as it does....he probably wouldn't be getting as much NFL Draft attention. Just like any other star athlete. It's not like star athletes don't get anything out of it. The schools are providing marketing for them as well at their expense.

  24. Really? I think the thing that made that run so remarkable is how we pulled out so many close wins. Dickey was of the mindset that, you hand in there and give yourself a chance to win it in the end. Your point still stands though: very different mindset from today’s teams. Those SBC teams would grind you down physically and had a mental edge.

  25. Well, you can start with Steve Ramsey and then add Mitch Maher. Mr. Fine finally passed Ramsey's TD total this year. But as I've said before, Ramsey's records were done in 29 games. Maher set his records in 44 games. If both of them had started the same time as Mason Fine, and went through drills in the same system, they would both have done just as well. And in the case of former Plano Wildcat, Mitch Maher, maybe better because of his running ability.

  26. I think what stings for me is we were favored. With the QB story if the week we had expectations going in. Then we played a team that was bigger and faster than us and it took me by surprise when I thought we would compete. We lost in front of the biggest crowd I have seen at Apogee. However the 2 things I really wanted out of this season was a CUSA championship and a bowl win. Both of those things are possible. This season could be the reverse of last season.

  28. I don't understand comparing the early SBC days to now. We won like 27 straight conference games and 4 titles. I may have been 14 but I remember those games there was never a thought we were going to lose. Nowadays when we're up 14 @ ODU it's a lot of "Hold on to your fucking hat". We have gotten our asses handed to us by CUSA teams in big games, lost many we shouldn't have, and been nowhere near as consistent as those teams. Those teams were destroying bad football teams with terrible resources. We are just barely remaining competitive with a bunch of underperforming schools. I'm just tired of playing comparable schools and seeing a huge discrepancy in talen. We all know how far we have come since Portland State but the big losses in important games (Troy, FAU x 2, Utah State, SMU & UH) remind how far away we are from being a good team. We're just an average to above average CUSA team with a pretty good QB who is being stymied by a new OC. What the hell are we going to be next year while we wait for the last two classes plus the current one to develop? Who's ready to hear about how Reeder is so much more comfortable heading in to year two as OC? Who's ready to fake excitement for the 3 JUCO DL players we sign (1 of which will fail to qualify) who were also offered by Idaho? Why am I ending this post with multiple questions?

  29. The really good news is that we wont face another team with the talent of SMU, Cal, or UH. They won't be as easy as ACU and UTSA, except for maybe UTEP, but we SHOULD win 5 more games at least. Don't let SMU's or UH's talent full you into believing we aren't CUSA good. Because we are still one of the best teams in CUSA. This league sucks something fierce, just as the SBC did back in the early 00's, but our non-conference losses never kept us from completely dominating some FBS dregs. I don't see why anything has changed on this front, except that we are now in CUSA instead of The Belt.

  32. i think a better example and a more obvious one is simpler to illustrate this point... a couple of years ago Donald De La Haye was a kicker for UCF and decided he wanted to start a youtube channel. His youtube channel was doing great, and per youtube's policies, they started paying him for his videos because he had so many views. Somehow the NCAA finds out, and because he uses his athletic abilities/status as an college athlete the NCAA says he needs to either stop making money off his youtube videos or stop playing football. There are MULTIPLE ways for students to make money off youtube/twitch/instagram/patreon while being a 'normal' college student. yet, De La Haye was not allowed to because he kicked footballs. With this new rule change, that is out the window and De la Haye could've completed his career at UCF with some great teams, while earning some harmless bucks on the side.

  33. The rumor has has been for 15 years that once TSU addressed their gym issue(way too small) that they would be next in line for any SLC expansion. Instead they rebuilt their football stadium and completed it just in time for the 2019 season. After their win over SFA last month they rose to #4 nationally in DII. Rick

  35. I think this team, even with the Bussey injury, would be completely different if Guyton had stayed. It's unfortunate. All defenses are just gonna load the box and tee up on the short routes until we can find a consistent deep threat

  36. I agree Plumm, on the facilities and resources end, but the conference setup is still THE killer. It’s better for us than it’s ever been, but it’s still awful compared to the AAC and MWC.

  37. In SL’s defense, he has no defense. He knew that it was desperation time going for it on those 4th downs. Your DL basically played Fullback for us, so we had nothing between the tackles. Yall are just way above where we are as a G5 program. You’ve shoved it up our ass every time we have played you since Apogee opened up. There’s just not much we can do about it.

  42. Weeell, I think you may have something there. Other schools like LaTech have been doing something similar.....but not quite as dramatic. I haven't seen the Green Brigade this energetic in decades. I was dubious about how well a 450 member band could move well and promote energy, but I've been pleasantly surprised. Also, "Fessor Cook" has done something historical with his North Texas themed fanfare to start pregame. I've never heard a custom fanfare at NT, and I've been watching the Band since the mid sixties. And the Band is having so much FUN! It's infectious...........😉

  46. After letting the game sink in for a full day, here's what I've come up with: 1. Most Importantly, What is going on with this team's inability to come out ready to play in the 1st quarter? Outside of ACU, it seems like the ENTIRE TEAM is sleepwalking during the first quarter over these first 5 games. ACU: 17-0 - This was to be expected though. SMU: 0-21 - Definitely unexpected. Team came out flat on both sides of the ball (including just 1 1st down). CAL: 0-20 - 3 straight 3-Outs to start the game offensively & a bad QB, Garbers, looking like an All Pac12 1st teamer. UTSA: 7-0 - Considering the way this game ended, this was, again, an incredibly poor start, despite an INT & TD within the first 2 minutes. HOU: 0-14 - ...and driving towards another score (1st/Goal at the 7yd line) when that magical 2nd quarter started & defense held them to a FG. I knew as soon as they got that 2nd TD that we were in for a long night because we'd have to play perfect to win. Still, after those previous 3 games, I knew NT could get back into the game... and we almost did. Once the 2nd quarter hits, everyone is finally ready to play football & we either see a real, competitive game develop (SMU/Cal/Hou), or a Mean Green runaway(ACU/UTSA). It's like the exact opposite of how we started/finished the vast majority of our games the previous 2 years where we'd start extremely fast, let the foot off the gas and allow the other team to creep back in (and sometimes win). 2. This was the first game of the year where Special Teams was bad/exposed. I hope we didn't put something on tape for future opponents, and it's as the players said, "just one guy making a mistake" that can be corrected during the next 2 weeks. But you know your STs were bad when you dominate TOP & passing stats & still lose badly. Then the very odd short kickoffs.... I'm not sure what Biagi was doing there. 3. We really needed to draw up some screens to Siggers during that game. The Houston DL figured out VERY QUICKLY that they were wearing out our OL, and just pinned their ears back all night long. No attempts by Reeder to catch them in overpursuit, or at least back them off, with the screen play that I can recall. 4. I enjoyed the Green Brigade teaming up with the Houston band during halftime. 5. We're really hurting for a downfield threat. Shorter should be able to be that guy, but for some reason Mason doesn't want to throw those jump balls up to him like he would to Rico. So, oftentimes, he winds up holding the ball checking down reads, and either missing a receiver because his timing is off, or eating it for a sack. 6. Need more Darden. This guy is probably the most electric playmaker we have now that Rico is out. Find ways to get him the ball! Jet Sweeps & WR screens and such. 7. Nice career long FG by Mooney to end the first half! 8. Great crowd. Lots of new faces sitting around me. Some, just football fans that had no NT affiliation. I hope they come back! If we can just start the games faster, we can still salvage this season & win out. I still think NT is the best team in C-USA.

  47. Lots to feel good about. Frustrating climb for sure but we have accelerated our program light years in the last three yrs (facilities, recruiting classes, bowl consistency). Seth is solid and getting lots out of these 3 stars. Growing pains with Reeder will settle. Perhaps some changes are due (Biagi) but I was proud to show my UH letterman father our product this week. Long road ahead but 2015 was a long way back too. Wren and Smat got this. I believe in them firmly.

  49. What next if I player declares for the draft and doesn't make it he can come back and play for a P-5 school only. They continue to stack the deck. I am UNT fan I do bleed green, so the big guys force the -other schools to drop football. Do you think I will become a UT fan? No I will watch a lot less P-5 football. What made college great is going away.
