Driving back home today I’m listening to ESPNU on Sirius. Danny Kannel and Greg Mcleroy’s show. They were talking about best QBs and under the radar QBs. They went through all the P5 conferences then touched on a few G5’s. Mcleroy started the segment and said there’s one QB he would take out of the G5 over most P5 QBs with the exception of maybe 3. (Lawrence, Tua and Fromm) And that’s Mason Fine. Called him a freak. Talked about his accuracy and despite his height he thinks he’ll have a long NFL career. Also talked about Littrell’s offense not skipping a beat with Harrell gone. Kanell talked about the game he covered last year in Denton vs FAU and how Fine got hurt but came back and played. Talked about his toughness. Great segment. Mason Fine got some major love.25 points

Yep. And their linebackers are no joke as well. Our first six games present a slew of interesting benchmarks and narratives. 08/31, ACU - how have we adjusted to Bodie Reeder’s offense? Are things clicking? Is Fine comfortable? Can we maintain the appropriate amount of separation from an FCS program and put away this game by early in the second quarter? 09/07, at SMU - what is the comparable rates of progression between Littrell and Dykes? Is it apples to oranges with their rate and quality of P5 transfers? I feel this one is among the closest analogs our teams have to each other. 09/14, at Cal - do we show up again in a big way this year? Can the offense be elite enough to diversify and control one of the toughest defenses known to this level of play? I will be thrilled if Fine has 250 passing yards in this one. 09/21, UTSA - can we finally not let these posers get under our skin and hang around? Separation, separation, separation. 09/28, Houston - Against arguably even defenses, how do two of the top-5 G5 QBs grade out against each other? Who is more established in their new offensive schemes by week 5? 10/12, at Southern Miss - are we tired by week 7? Will we not get beat by the Bye? Can we prove the critics wrong and show that SoMiss does not deserve the presumptive West crown?10 points

Hopefully the Coaches give the Back-up QB's some play time this year when team is leading handily, unlike the past 5-6 yrs where back-ups have generally gotten no time until they are forced to come in. Plenty of games last few years Back-ups could have gotten good game time.6 points

Cincinnati (AAC) vs North Texas (SEC) Damn that Wren Baker! He went and got us into a new conference.6 points

If he has the stats to match the last player to lose a shoe on the field, I’ll take it!6 points

The one time TT represented the SWC in the Cotton Bowl, aTm was champion but ineligible due to NCAA vioations. There was a 5 way tie for 2nd and TT went winning the tiebreaker because they hadn't been to the Cotton Bowl in the longest time, because they had never been5 points

No lie. I took a group of my students to SMU and not 4 minutes into the campus tour one of my students stopped me and asked to speak to me on the side. Coach, Why did you bring us to an all white college? I died laughing and told this students it was not in fact an all white college but we did have a good laugh and conversation about private schools.4 points

Honest question...How many SMU fans would be interested in meeting a single kid from inner-city Dallas if the kid couldn't run fast, jump high, or do something else to entertain them?4 points

We've got some bowling balls in the back field this season, really hoping that helps with the short yardage situations. Also really hoping that Loren's knees hold up. As a fellow multiple ACL injury sufferer, easily one of the toughest injuries to come back from both mentally and physically.3 points

If we get through the first half of the year 4-2 or 5-1, I think we’ll be primed for another landmark season. The latter half of the slate just requires us taking care of business and staying healthy.3 points

I remember seeing previous article that Cal defense was considered "elite." This will be a true test of where we are at with our high-flying offense. If we move the ball effectively/efficiently on the Cal defense, we can move it on anyone else on our schedule this season.3 points

So a bit of confusing info has come out over the last few weeks. Utah State announced on their schedule that they will be playing LSU on 11/22 and us on 11/24 Rhode Island also announced they will be playing LSU on 11/22, and North Texas or Utah State on 11/24. LSU’s schedule is showing TBA for both dates.3 points

I have pretty strong opinions on scheduling, but I agree, we should play one a year. These teams aren’t going to come here, so if we have to go there, take a shot and get a check so be it. But only once a year.3 points

The forgotten aspect of money games (hate the term body-bag) is that the players actually want to play them. Playing a top twenty team should be seen as an opportunity not a punishment. Playing in front of crowds of sixty thousand plus, are a thrill for the players. My guess, is that the current NT team, is not the one Cal thought they signed up to play. That is not technically a money game because it is part of home and away series, but presents a real opportunity for NT to be noticed. Because of instant replay and advanced coverage, it is much harder to have a games stolen like the UT and Arkansas contests of the past. Victories are rare but sweet, Arkansas of last year and Fry's win over Tennessee are examples. Loses against Clemson, Georgia , and others did nothing to diminish NT's reputation.3 points

It's all part of the self-perpetuating cycle. "UCF beat a P5 school in the bowl game, but they could never compete for a full season in a P5 conference." How do you know? "Because P5 conferences are better top to bottom" How do you know? "Because they play P5 schools every week. And they recruit at a higher level" How do you know? "Look at the rankings of the players they are bringing in" So, how do you know those rankings are legitimate? How do you know these kids are more talented? "These kids have offers from all the P5 schools" Rinse...repeat...2 points

Who gives a flying flip. The kid can BALL. Let him be ranked low, let the big schools stay away. Look what this staff did with a no offer undersized QB....2 points

I wonder if they are partnering with June Jones' inner-city ministry. That seems like a perfect match.2 points

Most of their own kids aren't from Dallas proper as it is. Looking through their roster, I counted 9 players from Dallas schools and 6 of those kids went to a prep school or private school (Dunne, Bishop Lynch, Jesuit, etc...). If you want to count Highland Park as Dallas that adds 3 or 4 players from Dallas. The kids mentioned in the Twitter post only include 1 from the inner city (Gary - Kimball). These kids from the inner city know SMU, who goes there, and how they feel about them. I'm not worried about some billboards being put up showcasing players from the suburbs. It'll take completely changing the culture at SMU to make a difference. Edit: regarding Gary being from the inner city, I don't know his background. I will say there are some pretty decent residential neighborhoods in the area of Westmoreland and Kiest around Kimball. Going to DISD doesn't mean you grew up as an inner city kid.2 points

It's smart. They need to connect with more people. Who knows, maybe they've been watching how little towns like Muenster, TX and Locust Grove, OK can get behind their hometown boys at UNT.2 points

We talk a lot about how things will affect our recruiting abilities going forward, as it pertains to prospective student athletes. But I think our ability to attract quality coaches is as high as it ever has been. Our administration is proving how much of a priority athletics is and how they’re willing to raise and pay the costs necessary to create a winner.2 points

❓Houston, 9-28-19—Did the Coogs QB after his knee injury last Fall regain full speed? If so, IMHO he will be the fastest QB with skins on the wall to ever play at Apogee Stadium. Even if he lost a step he’ll still be a mover. Can’t wait for that game & is why I bought my tickets for it last Monday. I can’t see any other game in Texas that day that even the P5 folks will not avoid casting a watchful eye as UH vs North Texas. Should easily be a sellout no matter what each team’s records are. . Spoke with an area UH fan who said DFW Coog fans are already (or planning) on buying group tickets. They had about 4K (?) UH fans at Apogees debut in 2011 so our fans need to step up & buy now & buy many to keep as much 🔴⚪out of the stands as possible. ➡️ In closing, we don’t need Houston fans (& their Spirit of Houston Marching Band) make Apogee look like Gerald J. Ford Stadium at SMU will look like on September 7’th with all the sea of Green-clad fans everywhere. GMG!1 point

It’s just not their brand. The Chads and Brads that show up (to leave early) or not show up at all, dominate that school. It’s a stuck up private school with a dwindling fan base. Still have to beat them on the field though...consistently and decisively.1 point
