  1. One sentiment I have never understood on this forum is that when a commit or player we are after gets a P5 offer or commits to a P5 school it's that said player will ride the bench for 4 years when he is a sure fire starter here. We have 15 solid FBS level players committed before July, we used to fill out the bulk of our classes with borderline players in January after about 105 schools had mostly finished recruiting that cycle. Kade is a high level player who will be tough to hold on to. It wouldn't surprise me if we had multiple decommits this year, both because we're recruiting a higher level of player and other coaches are well aware of our staffs ability to evaluate talent. Hopefully he ends up here, but if he goes to a P5 school I bet he will play and not get buried in the depth chart which a lot of people think is a given for some reason.

  6. Some of my thoughts on the MWC: UNT needs to be in a conference with in-state/interstate rivals as much as possible. This program is fighting 100+ years of apathy because they never played anyone the public gave a crap about in conference play. Look at the home schedule attendance from last year. Top 3: La Tech, SMU, Rice. By a wiiiide margin. Heck, even Incarnate Word outdrew SoMiss, and Flantic doesn't travel at all. You want UNT recruits and their parents to be able to travel as easily as possible to away games. Mama wants to see her baby play. Cannot underestimate how important that is in recruiting. You want travel costs to be as low as possible for your entire program. MWC will be a strain on the AD. You want opponents with name recognition in the state of Texas, which is where UNT draws most RECRUITS. For perception purposes, and ideally, UNT NEEDS to be mentioned in the same breath as the SMU's, Tulsa's, and Houston's of the world on Saturday and Sunday morning. MWC game times and opponents hinder that. You want OPPOSING teams fans to TRAVEL as much and as many as possible to Apogee. Attendance will suffer with MWC. UNT will not play BSU at home every year. When will the phrase "...before a sellout crowd at Apogee Stadium..." be uttered by a broadcaster or printed online? I think UNT should continue to build and WIN. Play the long game. Set sights a bit higher than the MWC. I think--at this point in UNT's progression--it's at best a lateral move, and at worst, a total momentum killer and a step backward. UNT needs to play a long game. MWC jump would be premature and a move sideways at the most.

  8. There is nothing you could ever do to hurt my feelings bud, you're only showing your age with a GIF that doesn't even make sense. Guys... 20 million people watched the league of legends championship in 2014, and that was five years ago. That's more than both the world series and the nba championship. There is a reason Amazon bought twitch. There is a reason smart universities are investing in esports. If even one graduate from this program goes on to join a pro team and starts taking home big paychecks I think there's a good chance he would be inclined to give back to the university. However, since you guys have your views 100% shaped by the television instead of your own personal experiences this just makes your head spin. It's 2019. It's not 1974. This isn't intergender bathrooms we are talking about here, this is our university making a smart move to get with the times. You guys should try it.

  10. I personally think we could go 10-2. However, I also believe we are capable of beating anyone on our schedule if we do not start reading all the hype and stay focused. I see a possible loss against UH and Cal. UH because defensively we really struggle against mobile QBs and King is as mobile as they come. Cal because of the travel distance, time zone change, and the fact they watched the Ark game last year and know that they cannot underestimate us because we are North Texas. Not saying that Ark underestimated us, but the media certainly did. The belief was that a bad Ark team would beat us because they are SEC and we are just North Texas. That's why it was so satisfying to watch the Mean Green beat the brakes off of them.

  15. I think this is a TA&M Columbia PFG fishing shirt. I would pay some serious money for one of these with the green flag on it. The current Columbia one is either white or a dark dark (incorrect shade) of green with an embroidered North Texas logo. I bought the white one and I think it was already $65.

  17. Thank you, that’s what I meant. 12 years of WAC and 3 years of the Big West in the 90’s. So my point still stands,...La Tech can tell you all anyone needs to know of playing out West. Of course...anyone here who remembers our Big West day’s knows some of it as well. There were not a lot of positives. Rick

  18. For me, this is imperative if C-USA is going to remain where NT is parked. As of now, outside of the comforts of having the 3 Texas teams & LATech within easy driving distance, & olympic sports travel costs being slightly lower in C-USA, there's virtually no upside to C-USA over MWC.

  26. Have we had a QB commit under Littrell garner this much P5 attention? G5 sure, but the fact that schools like FSU, MSU are sniffing around should say something about A) how friggin good this kid will be and B) how friggin good Littrell's evaluations have gotten

  27. I've always wondered why the people in charge of merchandising for North Texas hasn't had some of these shirts made in North Texas colors. All you have to do is substitute the greens on our battle flag for the blue and red on this shirt. Also, it would be a great shirt for the Band to wear for their warm weather uni's.

  28. Every single away game being a flight gets expensive as a fan. I'll be at probably every away game this year because half of them I can hop in the car. I don't know if I'd spend the $1k per away game for two people to fly, dine, and sleep if 100% of the away games are plane distance.

  30. Glad to see the adjustment but last year's approach made sense at the time too... Coming off the CBI Championship, continuity of rotations and familiarity of roles gave our squad a leg up on others early in the year and the 16-1 start proved it to be the correct call. Unfortunately, once the depth was tested by injury and conference play brought on foes with deeper knowledge of tendencies, we weren't successful in adjusting. Challenging the players to stretch their skill sets early in camp and in non-conference play may cost us such a notable early season record but will hopefully prove to provide greater versatility as a team when we face off against the rest of CUSA.

  36. I guarantee you that the Arkansas win and the publicity we got from that trumps both of those bowl calamities. But your point stands about needing to keep winning. Beating SMU, UH, and Cal this fall would go a long way into convincing the MWC that we are definitely a program they could see getting value from if they were in the conference with them. My fear has always been that the MWC and AAC will just wait to see what happens with the Big XII's probable demise by 2025 and see what spare parts they could add from the leftovers instead of adding in a CUSA program. One other possibility that seems to be growing is that the Pac-12 is a clusterfruck right now, when it comes to revenue. They are clearly getting nothing from their network and you are hearing grumblings out West from the southern Pac schools about not getting $$$ anywhere close to the Big XII right now. If the Big XII survives and somehow adds in some of their schools, then the Pac 12 leftovers would probably look at MWC pieces to poach, like Boise State, UNLV, SDSU, and Fresno State to name a few.

  38. I have no problem moving over to the MWC should we get an invite. Correct me if I'm wrong, but an open spot in the MWC only comes if an existing MWC team moves over to the AAC. Correct? I just don't see it happening. Why someone like a Boise State, Colorado State, or Fresno, etc., want to park their football team "cross country" in the AAC? Whoever makes that decision at any of the MWC universities should have their head examined. smut would be the closest school in the conference??

  39. MWC is not a good fit for UNT as it stands--IMO--and I doubt it ever will be.
    1 point
  40. Depends on what your aim is. More money? AAC would be about $10 mil more in revenues and expenditures. Championships? UCF is as well positioned as Liberty. Conference reshuffle? If - IF the big boys have to raid the AAC, it's probably the most unstable conference in the country. Perception? It's a G5 conference. We're acting like a bunch of third class passengers on the Titanic arguing over the most prestigious place to drown. As I see it, our best option comes as a result of contraction, not expansion. At some point, teams like Tulsa or Rice will go the way of UConn.

  41. I don't necessarily like this idea but from a budget comparison we are at least in the ballpark. The high end of the MWC spends $51m/year with most clustered around $48m. The bottom 2 are USU and San Jose at $34m/$30m respectively. We'd fit in right above those 2. The lowest spender in the AAC is at $48m. We'd really be bringing up the rear-end there with a $12m/year gap between us and the next lowest budget. I don't see USU being a fan draw in Denton, and really not CSU, Wyoming, New Mexico, etc either. The only two teams that might be a draw would be Boise and Air Force. The rest are just too far West. Also, an un-ranked Boise isn't drawing anymore interest or generating more fans at the gate than a UTEP or LaTech who always seem to bring plenty of their own fans. CUSA West is better for us from an ability to drive numbers at the gate, but the TV dollars might give the MWC the edge overall. From an on the field/court perspectvie, the basketball in the MWC is head and shoulders better than CUSA and the football is at least viewed as being better (whether or not it actually is is up for debate). We'd need to significantly upgrade in basketball or we'd be a doormat.

  42. They should call is something other than Esports...why? Simply put...it "ain't no sport". Why don't we also look at scholarships for tattoo artists? call it Tat-Sports. Why not? About as close to a sport as electronic games. Just saying. Now, if this program is somehow integrated into a UNT program that develops video games and other on-line programs, well and good. If it is a stand-alone "team", then..meh, not so much.

  43. I was a no on MWC, but now I am teeter tottering on it after reading some of your comments. The thing that is so unappealing is the travel involved. I saw mentioned that our fanbase would not travel well and I think that is a valid excuse as to why it may not be a good idea. What is New Mexico the closest school to North Texas? And that is like a 9 hour drive? UNLV would be a cheap flight, Since you can fly Spirit to Vegas on pennies from when I have gone there in the past. I couldn't see why flights to Colorado would be to expensive either. I'm just skeptical of fans traveling when it starts getting to long to drive a car after work on a Friday to go see the big game Saturday... Plus, how well do MWC teams travel? Why I am changing my mind, is conference reputation. Boise State is highly regarded, and have put the MWC at the big boys table. I could not understand why the MWC would at all be opposed to adding UNT, since the DFW market would be something of tremendous value to that conference. Side note to think about: TCU was once in the MWC and was a top tier team in the conference.. Look where they are now..

  46. You statement regarding a donor is pure speculation. If a donor or donors existed they would say so. Who really knows where the scholarship money comes from. Esports is funded by student service fees. They actually call themselves "athletes". https://www.dallasobserver.com/arts/university-of-north-texas-becomes-first-public-texas-school-to-give-esports-scholarships-11687998 I did not say funding one was the direct result of defunding the other. One distinction is comparative academic value. As it relates to Debate funding I don't have time to explain everything. However, if you read my post, I stated they were told they would be defunded in 3 years. Since the student (peers) committee changes membership from year to year and for a host of other reasons they lack the authority lay claim to the future. Also, you might want to read the applicable law relating to student service fees. Debate scholarships exist and have been funded by donors.

  47. Having seen what roundabouts have done here in Conway on our 2 major arterials, they are much more effective than lights as far as traffic movement, now cost has to be looked at long term, but had a rounadbout replace a light on a US Highway thru town and what once meant sitting for 5-10 min at a light now traffic flows smoothly, also slows down cars. As for the potential for more accidents, one can not fix stupid or piss poor drivers.
