  1. Mccasland doesn’t seem to be that interested in working the high school scene. Obviously he has brought in a lot of JUCO recruits as a former JUCO HC himself, but even with the high school offers he has made they have primarily come after watching those players on the AAU scene. Which doesn’t matter as long as he is bringing in quality players imo.

  2. Just drove past Apogee (Sunday 1:00p) and we saw 10-12 cars in the black lot and 2 or 3 in the white lot all wrapped up as if for Christmas gifts. Do the big donors get cars now ? Is this the ultimate in parking lot ding protection ? Are these cars in the witness protection program or are they just being stored so the recruits at Southern Meth will be surprised ?

  5. So much Old Denton in that podcast. No we don’t need to go begging for scraps. This isn’t 2006. This staff just signed the best class in school history with the highest avg in CUSA. And they did by December. I firmly believe that if they can find 25 3-stars to sign in the early period, you get them signed and start building the next class (which is why we already have 5 signed by May). I certainly don’t advocate signing a full class in December just for the sake of doing so, but if you found your guys then you don’t need to hold open spaces for some theoretical fall-through- the-cracks guys in February.

  6. Just curious who would you consider a good head basketball coach at NT? Blakeley, whose total success was primarily due to an inherited super group of players. Jones who in his first two years went 22-35 and didn't have a winning record till his sixth year. There are excuses and excuses, but the NT injury situation seems like a factor that can't be overlooked. Even with the injuries NT didn't suffer blowout loses like the Benford and Trilli teams did. I am already confident that McCasland is a good coach based on his first two years. Can he get NT championships, that certainly remains to be discovered.

  7. I too question he ability to recruit. Benford was at many Guyer games during his tenure talking with coaches and players. In two years Mcasland hasn’t been once. I understand we aren’t going to land their big guys, but taking the time to visit/invest is important. Hopefully Grant picks up on this because his ability to recruit has been laughable. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Side Note: I bleed green and will support Grant just like I did Tony, but UNT basketball really needs a pick me up. I question this season/recruiting group, but I hope they prove me wrong.

  8. Did not know that black was a school color and did not know that Eagles was replaced with Mean Green in 1966...both seem wrong to me. We were Eagles long past 1966 and black has never officially been a school color.

  10. This will be Cas's best team. As a G5 where are you going to get the best talent? In HS it will be undersized guards that don't fit the P5 mesurables. I believe we are going to have to stick to Juco's and transfers that want to play, especially recruiting size. How far would Tech had gone without them? Very excited to see what Cas can do with a more balanced team.

  13. Florida State is a run-producing Machine. Extremely aggressive at the plate. Going into today 15 of their 21 hits in the tournament have been for extra bases. They jumped on South Carolina early but SC is hanging with them 3-5 in the 4th. Rick

  16. I don’t think they will either, but to put huge penalties on them and not take them back like they did for Penn State, who does have gigantic coverage and fan interest that Baylor never will have.

  18. I bet this is a result of the old guard putting the tab for Apogee in the athletics budget. No other schools do this and it was a mistake. That decision has directly lead to articles like these and the “debt” one in the school paper.

  19. Andrew you are a great fan but some of these posts are head scratchers my friend. Did Benford ever sign a quality guy from Guyer? I’ll hang up and listen. This cycle Grant has literally landed our second highest rated recruit of the past decade, a nationally ranked JuCo point guard and a key player from a NCAA tourney team.

  20. I think he’s a little too high on this list. He will definitely be a late round draft pick next year. A team will take a chance on him in the 5th or 6th round. No risk, all reward.

  21. I really don't care who the coach is. The overall recruiting has been bad or decent. To your question, this coach is grossly overrated. Mainly because he is often compared to Tony Benford; where you and I would look better. The 20 win season(s) is over-blown due to the cream puff schedule put together to ensure 20 win seasons. (and playing 5 extra games in a tournament most other "left over" programs turn down). No one is a bigger fan of the basketball program than I am and have been. I just refuse to be hoodwinked by the likes of Brett Brett "Associated Press 2018 Star Sportswriter of the Year Award-winner" Vito and others. When it takes nearly 40 games to win 20, the bar has been lowered from previous era's. We are a below .500 program, within a mediocre conference, that falters annually down the stretch when it matters the most. Is it a lack of coaching, talent or both? Certainly, nothing to get excited about from my perspective. For a coach with roots in the metroplex, I don't understand why we have to bring in guys from Russia and other areas of the globe/states when the campus is within 50 miles of the top talent in the country. This guy is over paid and thus, we are stuck with him.

  23. I want nothing more than to see Fine walk of the field with a CUSA title and bowl win this year, so I would have accepted a recruiting approach that focused on immediate contribution. That said, what the staff's focus on high school players says to me is: The coaches are confident in the depth they've developed and that the program has players ready to step into vacated roles Littrell did not turn down KState and stay in Denton with a distracted, "one more and done" mindset For those reasons, I'm glad they have recruited the way they have.

  26. I didn't mind that. He seemed engaged with his group and was able to captivate them. Didn't like the shorts and what not, but I am sure his band loved it. Never met the guy, but from afar he seems like a genuine good dude.

  31. Very true. I remember when Ken Hatfield coached at Rice and I have often wondered if running a system similar to what he ran would help Rice. For those that don't remember, Hatfield ran the "flexbone" offense which is similar to what the service academies run. Rice will always have difficulty running a system like 99% of the other teams run and recruiting against those teams. It is just tough to find enough kids with the academics Rice requires and the athleticism it takes to compete. Run something off the wall, like Army, that could possibly lead to some success.

  32. Well, the 2015 season under McCarney was in CUSA and we were without a doubt the worst FBS team that year. If UTSA isn’t down to their 6th string QB against us in Denton, we go 0-12 Rice and UTEP are in that territory for sure now.

  36. Only the delusional fan that ignored the most important thing there is for winning conference championships.: DEFENSE! Sure, we couldn’t score, and yes, we lost. But after I watched Booger & co put Chris Simms on his ass all day and posted a second half shutout I thought,...”Damn...we have a championship-caliber defense, we could win some hardware”. And that’s exactly what happened. Rick
