  1. The first thought many fans had after seeing these signings, and even seeing the offers a while back, was why weren’t we recruiting more big men. And I get that, and also agree that we don’t have the stable of big men that we should. Even if we are going to run out four-guard lineups. But even those these two are not big men, they are going to help out a lot, partially because of their size. A big issue we had last year was creating offense and creating good looks. We would sometimes go long stretches of basketball without getting really any good looks, or take up the entire shot clock and never get a good look the whole possession. This is what led to all of those halves of 25 or less points. Part of the reason we struggled to get good looks is our lack of height. Short guys need more space for an open look than tall guys. Another reason is lack of quality creators. It was really just Woolridge, and Miller to a smaller degree. Smart is a high usage player but he struggled when he put the ball on the floor. Reese and Hamlet will help address this. Reese is listed at 6’4”. He needs less space between his man to get a clean look off than shorter guys like Draper and Gibson. Plus his shooting stats were outstanding, so his ability to convert those clean looks is impressive (80 threes in 34 games, 41.9% from three, 86.6% from the line). Also, starting Reese next to Smart will allow Rose to play the two which is where he has gotten most of his best looks. Smart getting back to anywhere near his sophomore form would make this a very dynamic off-the-ball scoring duo from the perimeter. As for Hamlet, he is no slouch as a shooter either but his game is creating and playmaking with the ball in his hands. Hamlet was very efficient as a shooter (44.8% from three and 83.8% from the line) but his lack of volume illustrates that he isn’t coming here to jack up a bunch of threes, as he made just 26 in 33 games. Hamlet is very good at getting into the lane and pulling in defenders. With guys like Reese, Gibson, and Smart (once he returns to form) on the perimeter, Hamlet will have his choice of quality three-point shooters to find once he collapses the defense. But I think Zachary Simmons may benefit even more from the addition of Hamlet than the shooters. Hamlet does a great job of dishing to his big men once he gets down low, and Simmons is a quality finisher. There has been speculation about Woolridge’s return. Assuming Woolridge comes back, adding Hamlet and Jalen Jackson will give Woolridge much more rest throughout games, and should lead to a much more rested and less worn down Woolridge come conference play and tourney play. But Hamlet is clearly not just here to give Woolridge rest. I think the coaches not only believe they can play together, but I think we may see them use more lineups with two ballhandlers going forward. Having two players who can create offense and create good looks can help prevent these stagnant phases that we saw so much of last year towards the end of the season. So in short, we still lack quality size but these guys do address two very key areas that we struggled with last year, in impressive fashion as they both are quite good at what they do.

  3. I may have gone a bit crazy this weekend, but once the paint had dried I will have Conehole, yard jengia, washers, tic tac toe, yard yahtzee, and a ladder toss all painted in North Texas livery. I will say the 3.5"x3.5" dice have been a pain to paint but sanding all the 2x4 jenga pieces has been a royal pain in the ass. I will post photos once complete.

  9. Mods can move if they wish, but when any of our teams are playing for conference championships, it should get football board publicity. Opponent is Middle Tennessee. Double Header Saturday beginning at 1pm. Game 3 on Sunday at noon. If NT wins all three it is guaranteed the CUSA regular season championship and #1 seed in the conference tournament by virtue of its head to head tiebreaker with La Tech. We need to pack the stadium this weekend with fans. Even if you haven't paid the least bit of attention to softball so far this year, make a point to go out and support. If you demand big time wins before supporting a team, well this team has them. Two top 25 wins including one over a top 10 team (and that team is STILL in the top 10 today). Almost certainly the biggest series in the history of NT softball. Let's pack the stadium for it. GMG!

  11. This is huge. We got our top targets instead settling which is a huge step forward. @Harrythe fact that he has committed makes me think he was pitched with a chance to start after being a stalwart on the bench at NDSU. So maybe not a 4-guard look after all. Also note, his stats were accumulated while averaging just 18 minutes per game. He has the shooting ability to be a stretch four but also could fill the five role when Simmons goes to the bench.

  12. I know people complain about the size of this team...and they do have a point. The way basketball is being played now though...a true big man no longer exists...you have to have shooters. The 3-ball has taken over the game. I’ll hang up and listen.

  15. Uh oh. This makes me wonder if the staff has not prepared themselves for making room (i.e. the guys we feel may be on the bubble have not actually been informed that they might not be in the program’s future). Like we’ve said before, the staff giving scholarships to players who had no other offers and didn’t look like CUSA-level players is something they’re paying for now that recruiting has picked up.

  22. TCU has also gotten caught in the pay-for-paly stuff, so Benford will fit in nicely down there in FW. I'll say this though, Jamie Dixon will see that there is a gigantic difference in actual hoops knowledge between Scott Cross and Benford. Unfortunately, we saw it every year that UTA whipped our ass when Cross was watching over their program. I still cant believe they fired him. Troy will be great very soon.

  23. You are correct, it does appear odd that he mentioned Gibson and Smart and not Woolridge. However, I suspect Vito is just speculating like we are. If he had any better information, he is not shy about sharing it.

  25. Do you see his name on the transfer list or have you heard anything about Woolridge wanting to transfer? Has McCasland ever lost a player he wanted to keep due to transfer? I suppose we can all worry about losing Woolridge just because he is eligible to transfer. If it is all speculation anyway, I prefer to think that he sees the opportunity NT has to be really good next year returning four starters and adding a lot of firepower in the incoming class and redshirts.

  26. He was referencing returning starting guards. Guess you missed that. Considering our starting guards were Smart, Gibson and Woolridge, the omission of one of the three stood out to me.

  27. Great points on creating offense for the shooters and how important space is for these guys! Really like the commits but will be disappointed if we don’t sign a 6’7 6’8 banger. We have to have somebody besides Zach that can set a frig n pick at the top of the key so he can stay around the hoop. With three strong scoring guards playing I don’t think you need another scorer. Just a guy that can set picks get a few rebounds and bring us some physicality!

  32. Good fit for EJ? From ESPN http://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2019/story/_/id/26620619/2019-nfl-draft-biggest-post-draft-questions-all-32-teams What are the Ravens going to do at inside linebacker? After losing C.J. Mosley in free agency, Baltimore didn't add a replacement for its leading tackler with any of its eight draft picks. The Ravens didn't find much value with this inside linebacker class, which was thinner than other positions. Team officials appear comfortable going with Patrick Onwuasor, who finished strong, and Kenny Young, a fourth-round pick from a year ago, in the middle of their retooled defense. The Ravens have a history of finding quality undrafted inside linebackers and also could sign a veteran who's still available. -- Jamison Hensley

  35. I would put it this way, Mason Fine made coming to UNT for other quarterbacks a desirable location. Success likes to follow success. I hope we have decades of aQB’s come in and match/1up Masons success. But I will give Mason credit for starting a legacy such as that.
