  2. Mr. Swan, UNT is a stepping stone until we can pay our HC a 4 million dollar salary while having a 2 million dollar assistant salary pool. Though your article is enriching and positive, specifically for The Daily, it still is seemingly shooting at a moving target. We, like about 80 other FBS programs, are stepping stones. Coaches have a competitive spirit. With that, comes an enlarged EGO. They THINK they are the wonderkind and can take their philosophy and have great success with it anywhere they go (no matter that the same philosophy is being used at about 80% of programs). Since the chips are stacked against us (and about [at least] 80-90 other FBS programs) it only affords them about 30 programs where they have a legitimate shot to really win a national title. They want that shot. And since we do not have a 6 million dollar salary pool for coaches at UNT, they move on because they also want that money.

  3. Always glad to be reminded of how great this run has been with Fine's exceptional leadership on the field, in the locker room, in the classroom, and as part of the Denton community.

  5. I’ll give you names instead of numbers: Boise State, Fresno State, Hawaii, San Diego State, Utah State, UNLV, Nevada, Colorado State, AFA, and New Mexico are all teams that have had great success in the two main revenue sports (i.e., ranked) in the last decade. Since UNT has been in the current version of CUSA, I don’t believe we have had one team ranked ever in the two main revenue sports. Plus, their champion is often in play for the BCS spot and is often ranked and seeded high in basketball. Our champion in 2017 got to play a MAC team that finished around .500 at home for their bowl game. This year, UAB got another MAC team for their bowl game as CUSA champs. In hoops, they got Nevada who was ranked most of the year and is seeded 7th. We got Old Dominion, who was seeded 14th. In so many cases, the company you keep reflects who you are. Right now, people view our league on similar terms as the SBC. To not see this increase in competitive names across both sports is just unfathomable to me. But its a moot point—if the MWC had any interest in us, we would have known about it already. They are just waiting on the Big XII to implode and see what Texas schools they will want to invite over. They’d love to get TCU, Baylor, UH, and probably either UTEP or UTSA for the TV market and bowl tie in possibilities.

  9. Agree. We need a big crowd for this next one, Utah St. beat us earlier in the year at home by 17! Right now we’re sitting at 16-15 overall, 7-9 in conference finishing in 9th place. A win against USU next week would guarantee us a winning record for the year!

  10. I’m all for joining the MWC, and what you said about time zone differences and newspaper coverage and whatever other weak excuses for not wanting to join just does not outweigh the benefits. Yes they have to travel but the quality of the conference and bowl tie ins are vastly superior.

Still was hesitant even after recieving the million dollar plus offer he eventually accepted 1 left to go back to his home state. And all went to P5s So it was not like these guys jumped at 1st train out of Denton

  15. I’ve argued for awhile that the SBCUSA is basically the same, for football and hoops. Nobody here cares about F_Us or ODU or Charlotte. At Marshall, they have no interest whatsoever in UTSA or UTEP. I’d imagine that Coastal Carolina and the G_Us in the SBC don’t move the needle much at Texas State, Louisiana, or Arkansas state. ASAP, these two conferences would benefit GREATLY from realigning their members.

  16. NT hosting again in the quarterfinals. The crowd for the first game was not good. Once again we really need to make a conscious effort as a fan base to show up for these games to support 1) our team 2) Jalie Mitchell who is an alum just like us and 3) the athletic department who is putting forth the effort and resources to not only to play in this but also host these games. This first one was on very short notice. The next one (not until next Tuesday) is not. Please make an effort to be there.

  18. There is only one conference that we could even remotely have a chance to go into that is above us currently and that is the MWC. Who knows if they’d even consider us, but the overwhelming response on gmg.com is never to go there since it’s time zones away and stuff and the newspapers that you people used to read physically won’t have a game story on Sunday morning, which just holds your program back, since apparently these folks believe the MWC is the EXACT SAME as the old Big West. @MeanGreenTexan knows my frustration about this—as we are in the vast minority of our fans on this subject.

  20. Yeah. I think he's confused on CB coach though. I believe he was let go and ended up at a lesser perceived program. But, to point it out because it needs to be pointed out, there is no need to reach around on this staff all the time. It's OK to be 100% objective regardless of whatever assistant to the assistant administrator you get your "inside" information from. I only state this because when so many people were so keen on NEVER pointing out deficiencies for so long, Dan McCarney, Tony Benford, Todd Dodge and Rick Villarreal happened. When absolute suckage is taking place, it needs to be pointed out from mountain tops; micro (game level) and macro (season to season and administrative level).

  21. I think Judy McLeod isn’t a good commissioner, but she’s not gonna make any networks want to pay up for the teams we have in this league anymore than the SBC commissioner could do. Look, if you’re in CUSA today, it’s because you wanted out of the Belt or you couldn’t leave because you deliver nothing market wise or as a program. It’s just what it is, unfortunately, for us.

  24. I think the TV market argument is losing strength. Because of the shift to streaming services, the decline of cable, and the stronghold the P5s have on everything. How is the Texas market boosting the F_Us? I don't see them ever sustaining success. So why would I be interested in stretching ourselves westward, and becoming someone else's F_U? This is endless and pointless. The CUSA ceiling right now is so much lower than the MWC, so IMO we're talking about sitting where we are at, contending for titles in a much smaller house...versus moving to the MWC and associating with bigger homes but not win any titles 9 out of 10 years. Not claim any sustained success. Plus we'd lose our regional foes. Plus away games would have horrible start times. The G5 landscape just sucks in general. Thanks P5s. Thanks Judy MacLeod

  27. Looking at just media rights, their current deal pays 1.1 million per school, which dwarfs North Texas’ current allotment. Facilities? Colorado St. just opened a 200 million dollar on campus stadium. Their players are drafted into the NFL and NBA....Derek Carr, Josh Allen, Paul George, Kwahi Leonard just to name a few. In almost every quantifiable category the MWC is better and would be better for North Texas.

  28. Make that 14 wins by run rule, OU wins 8-0. Still 16-10 record, not bad at this point! We need to focus our attention on La Tech and the stronger teams in our conference...which is right around the corner. #GMG

  30. At this point I put it on the coaching staff if we don't have a contingency plan. Rod Young and TJ are gone. English could be special but he's never going to play a meaningful down for us(Let's be realistic here). Who steps up? Novil is obviously a candidate, maybe Dayton LeBlanc? Still need a healthy 2 deep at arguably the most important position in a 3-3-5

  33. I really do love conference realignment talk... (really, no sarcasm... I love it) Lets be real... unless we win 4 of the next 6 CUSA titles, we will be living in SBCUSA world for quite some time. Once all the conference realignments start back up, I would love to see the better schools from SBC and CUSA come together for a conference that could start to rival AAC. I just hope we will be in those conversations!

  34. This may open up a whole other can of worms here... but I would argue that the current version of the Sun Belt is stronger than CUSA. I do like playing more local schools in our current conference, but I think Troy could beat any team in our conference easily.
