I'm long winded, so bear with me. We all want the same thing...To see this program climb the ladder...Wins, Big Crowds, Bowl Games (and Bowl Game wins...) Conference Championships, Recruiting, Facilities, and the like...And we do tend to get spoiled that all of it doesnt happen at once...So instead of one giant ladder, it's a series of different ladders, that all of them get climbed at different rates. But overall, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the crowd Saturday. Was it a sellout? Not even close...Have we had larger crowds? Most certainly... But my point is this...Anyone who has been around this program, for 20-30 years, can attest to the fact, that you put this game in a time machine to the past, where if we came into a game, Homecoming even, at 3-5, with as many recent losses as we've had, there's no way there wouldve been that many people, (including students!) I was seriously expecting to see a dismal crowd. And to be fair, it didnt hurt that it was beautiful weather, but still.... To me, that's a good "Ladder Rung" we just climbed... Program/year isnt exactly where it could be, but it's still noticable that people are behind this thing. Well done Wren and Company..

I had a young man come over this morning (Sat) to mow my yard. He showed up in an Arkansas sweatshirt. I asked him what his Arkansas connection was. He said he doesn't like it anymore and only wears it to mow yards. He said he stopped liking Arkansas after the North Texas game. GO MEAN GREEN

Mods can move if they wish, but when any of our teams are playing for conference championships, it should get football board publicity. Opponent is Middle Tennessee. Double Header Saturday beginning at 1pm. Game 3 on Sunday at noon. If NT wins all three it is guaranteed the CUSA regular season championship and #1 seed in the conference tournament by virtue of its head to head tiebreaker with La Tech. We need to pack the stadium this weekend with fans. Even if you haven't paid the least bit of attention to softball so far this year, make a point to go out and support. If you demand big time wins before supporting a team, well this team has them. Two top 25 wins including one over a top 10 team (and that team is STILL in the top 10 today). Almost certainly the biggest series in the history of NT softball. Let's pack the stadium for it. GMG!

It's really a small world. We are currently on vacation in Dublin, and I ran into a couple wearing North Texas gear. I yelled out Go Mean Green and talked to them for a few mins. It's really cool running into alumni in other countries.

Watching the game last night I couldn’t help but think back to Littrell’s first three recruiting classes. We don’t have many Mccarney recruits left and a lot of the JUCOs we signed early on are gone. In year four we’re at the stage where we are leaning on the early high school signees to be the upperclassmen and leaders of the team. According to 247, the 2016 class was ranked 8th in CUSA, the 2017 class was ranked 11th, and the 2018 class was ranked 8th. And by my metrics based on offers, these classes were even a little below the last two Mccarney signed. The turnaround since then is well documented but those guys from the 2019 and 2020 class are years away from being the upperclassmen of our roster. What also hurts is that we only signed, by my count, 10 high school signees in that first class in 2016. It was always a peculiar decision to go so JUCO/transfer heavy right away in a rebuild. And while some of it definitely paid off early, it definitely would be nice to have another 5-10 seniors and redshirt juniors, especially at some of the positions where we are not looking great. At this point the roster is what it is. We are recruiting better at most positions, and that took time to turnaround our reputation. We have won the last two years without having great depth, and we’re going to have to do so this year as well. All this to say I don’t need to go into detail on where the team needs to improve, but based on recruiting results this team should be an average to slightly below average CUSA roster with a really good QB and that’s what we’ve looked like this year.

Aune looks like #2 and Martin looks like #3. Bean still tries to make up for his indecision with his legs. He does have good wheels, but then, just about everyone else does too. BV is right, Keune will probably redshirt. He does have some Fine-like qualities however. Addaway looked pretty good. He weaved through the middle of the defense for his first TD. He has very good speed, but I still haven't been able to evaluate his power running. Siggers is getting back into rhythm as a rb after spending a season at DB. White looks pretty good and Shorter made some pretty good catches, but he seemed a bit off after taking an uncomfortable fall in the endzone going for a fade pass. He got mugged most of the day by the DB's...…...as did all of the WR's. It looks like our DB's are being turned loose to go bonzai on the receivers. Hopefully they will then learn to dial it back. #20 and #40 looked good out there at LB. #32 was a monster. All the starting DL's were putting a lot of pressure on the QB's and I saw a lot of #45 and #46 around the ball when they were in there. That's good, because they both look like they are capable of jamming up the middle. just going by todays efforts, #47 seems to have the strongest leg. #49 under kicked a 50+ yrd FG attempt, and #47 had more than enough leg, he just missed. All the receivers had to battle a brutal cold gusty wind today. It never got over 48 degrees and the wind averaged around 15-20 mph. I was sooooo glad to get back into my truck.

Hmm. AAC leadership apparently has friends in high places, but I'm legitimately wondering if that conference has figured it out.... to the point that even after Texas/OU/OSU/Kansas leave the Big12, schools like Houston & SMU won't want to join up with the Big 12 leftovers, rather staying with the AAC. If NT can keep up momentum better than we have (football & basketball), we can position ourselves nicely to fit with the Big12 leftovers if SMU decides to stick with the AAC. Also, pretty please can we get rid of McCleod & bring in someone who can run a conference? C-USA has done nothing but backslide under her leadership.

This young man is just awesome to watch. His two TD catches were brilliant and he made them look so easy The move he put on the defender for his first TD was beautiful. That poor DB is still looking for his jock strap. The second one was such a difficult catch to make and he made it look routine. He has really stepped up in Bussey’s absence.

For better or worse he is the best coach (by winning percentage) we have had since Hayden Fry left for Iowa 40 years ago. 40 years! Cool your jets and be grateful we aren’t just striving to be bowl eligible anymore. We are trying to hit 9 these days instead of 6. Although that loss sucks hard because of who the opponent was, we still have an entire conference slate coming that could be a totally different season from this start. And those of you saying Seth isn’t going anywhere because no P5 would want him forget that he was a staff disagreement from being the KSU head coach despite losing to Old Dominion and blowing several 21+ point leads. Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.

Keep the faith guys. It's always darkest right before the dawn, and it's been black as night, black as coal. There are still several games to play, not just for us but also for the other teams that stand in the way of our goals. Undefeated from this point on and we're right back in the CUSA-West hunt, and we'll remain bowl eligible with one loss. This obviously cannot be the kind of season that we desired, but it can still be a lot of fun, especially if we earn an invitation to a local bowl. GMG!

My favorite quote in the article is this: “I coach great kids who do the work,” DeLong said. “I like this place and want to coach here a long time.”

NDSU fan here. You will not be disappointed with Geu. Dude works hard and has some nice post moves. Can hit an occasional 3. Not a bad defender and has ability to guard players bigger or smaller than him. Sad to see him leave, as I really thought he deserved more playing time.

Mr. Swan, UNT is a stepping stone until we can pay our HC a 4 million dollar salary while having a 2 million dollar assistant salary pool. Though your article is enriching and positive, specifically for The Daily, it still is seemingly shooting at a moving target. We, like about 80 other FBS programs, are stepping stones. Coaches have a competitive spirit. With that, comes an enlarged EGO. They THINK they are the wonderkind and can take their philosophy and have great success with it anywhere they go (no matter that the same philosophy is being used at about 80% of programs). Since the chips are stacked against us (and about [at least] 80-90 other FBS programs) it only affords them about 30 programs where they have a legitimate shot to really win a national title. They want that shot. And since we do not have a 6 million dollar salary pool for coaches at UNT, they move on because they also want that money.

I'm debating with Vito on Twitter about this and I know some people may disagree, but to me, Houston is our biggest OOC game. -They are the marquee G5 program in the state and have been one of the best in the nation for a decade. -Even though they're not the rival SMU is, they're still an in-state rival that we're trying to catch in terms of facilities and on-field success. -We directly compete against them for lots of recruits every season. -The game itself is going to be a bigger event than the SMU game. Houston always brings a ton of fans and I can easily see this game being a sellout if both teams get off to a good start.

And it is a completely false narrative. If anything, Fine made a rookie OC look better than he is, parlaying Fine’s talent into a top 5 (historically speaking) job.

After all the turnover over this off season could the Mean Green Coaching staff actually be improved? I think it is no ta contest the staff is improved by miles on the recruiting side. But argument could be mad the Xs and Os part is improved as well. For those living under a rock lets recap OC Graham Harrell to USC = OC Bodie Reeder Bodie come to UNT after leading Eastern Washington to a top 3 offense in FCS and a trip to the FCS National Championship game. Expect the Mean Green offense to move a lot faster next year. It will have a Briles effect. RB Tashard Choice to Georgia Tech = RB Patrick Cobbs I think this is one of the most underrated additions of the offseason. Choice was a fan favorite and a player favorite. But bringing UNT hall of famer back to coach running back is huge. He brings NFL experience and TXHSFB ties. If you have ever talked to Cobbs you can't overlook his passion for UNT. He can sell UNT better than anyone. "I came to UNT and played on Sundays" WR Joel Filani to Texas Tech = TE Adrian Mayes Adrian is the youngest of the new staff but he has already made a huge impact in the recruiting category during his time at Texas State. He also coached TE Keenan Brown who is set to be drafted in April. Look for TE to be more involved in the fall. CB Nate Brown = CB Clay Jennings Coach Jennings comes from Texas Tech. Coach Jennings another North Texas Alum headed back home. You coulld make the arguement that Jennings has been the best DB coach and recruiter in the region the last decade. He has mad stops at TCU, Arkansas, Houston and Texas Tech. He has recruited and coached several that are still playing on Sundays. LB Jeff Koonz to Ole Miss = LB Galen Scott Yes Coach Scott got in to some hot water due to infidelity. But on the football field and in recruiting he was a rising star. He was Co-DC at Memphis before being names Co-DC at Virginia Tech. He resigned to get things right with his family and for a fresh start. But to be named Co-DC with Bud Foster is an honor within itself. I am all for him getting a second chance. Reffett was with Scott at Memphis so if Reff willl vouch for him I am good with it. Offensive Quality Control John David Baker to USC = QC Tommy Mangino I think bringing in the former Big 12 WR coach and SEC QC coach is a huge upgrade. He brings experience and pedigree. I also want to throw it out there that the 4 coaches Seth was able to hang on to could be argued they are the most important to keep. Yellock and Langston can continue to develop the lines on both side of the ball. and Seth keeps both his right hand men in Mainord and Reffett. Out of the 4 assistants that left for P5 gigs all left to go back home besides Graham who go the brinks truck backed up at his house. He is making over a million next season.

He finished with a 39 yard punt average, two of which were soccer style...(for reasons I’ll never understand why). Still he placed two of his three punts inside the 20. And UTEP finished with 1 yard in punt return yards. Statistically it was a good day for The Diesel. Rick
