  1. Mean Green add former Iowa State WR coach and Kentucky assistant to the staff https://cyclones.com/coaches.aspx?rc=568

  2. If this were the case then how were we so good and sharp in the 36th-40th games of the season last year? Also, we haven’t been good offensively all year. Early in the year we struggled to get 68 points against a now 5-24 UMES team, then followed that up with a game where Maine, also now 5-24, took us to overtime as we scored just 60 points and only 25 in the second half, then couldn’t separate against St Peter’s, who is now 8-20, as we beat them by just 9 points. Then our next home game we needed a furious come back just to reach 63 points to beat UTA, now 14-15. The issue to me is talent. Mccasland has done a good job winning games early on with average talent but as the season goes on teams are able to exploit our lack of talent and glaring player deficiencies. Plus the schedules have gotten harder in these cases as well. I think this was more true last season and in Grant’s year at Arkansas State than this season. I think we had the talent at the top of our lineup, but Duffy and Smart have looked nothing like they did in the CBI run and we used too many scholarships on guys who can’t make up for those guys not being as good.

  3. What happens when you waste scholarships on guys who give you nothing. I really have no explanation for Smart, but it is frustrating how we keep having these preseason injuries that seemingly hamper us the rest of the season. Duffy and Miller last year, Smart/Wise/Mohamed this season.

  6. I think UTEP should always be dead last on this list. IMO, Rice can be the Stanford or Duke of the G5s with the right coach an administration, just because of their Houston/Texas ties. The La Tech, USM, Marshall, and WKU combo get good talent, but they are in Podunk markets, which limits your overall potential. You've got the F_Us, UAB, Charlotte, ODU, and UTSA who are in big cities/markets by themselves but are often looked at as commuter schools or extensions of state schools. This used to be us until recently. They all have great potential, but they either don't draw well or just haven't been able to build any decent momentum for their program to gather decent coverage from both media and fans. That leaves to me, the two obvious choices for best jobs--MUTS and us. Both have college towns that are within a close proximity of a bigger city, but also have large enrollments and have shown the ability to draw solid crowds with winning teams, not to mention solid administrations that actually like athletics (I still cant believe I am typing this out about us!!)

  8. Consider this...she has 12 more hits than UTA’s hit leader had going into last night’s game. We greatly missed her bat last night. Hope she’s able to go this weekend. Rick

  13. One psychopath’s story has nothing to do with the other. What should be debated that many want to ignore is the deranged one-sided national press/media that so wanted Smollett’s story to be true that in their haste to convict President Trump of anything led to nation wide hysteria from the beginning when the story first broke. They the media are the true culprits in this as they have been in similar cases, that do the most harm to real victims of crime and hatred. Rick

  14. You can analyze every angle, but based on how we finished last year, the play of Smart has been a killer. If he would just post !/2 his stats how many more games do we win? We don't hit from the perimeter , we are done. No size and really no power or strength.

  15. I think the biggest issues in Mccasland building the program have been recruiting and over-estimating players we have. Much like Littrell’s first few recruiting cycles, Mccasland has just not been winning head to head recruiting battles against noteworthy schools. And he thought our roster was set and deep enough to take a guy in Shakeem Alcindor who no one else wanted and who put up pedestrian stats at a prep school that played very questionable competition. And at the beginning of the year he thought we had quality enough depth to be able to redshirt Mohamed and Wise when in reality his depth was made up of guys who have proven to be well below average CUSA level players in guys like J Simmons, Arikawe, and Draper.

  16. Press the three point line and sag on Z. Simmons and you beat us. I love Woolridge but being a point with his size, he has to drive a draw contact. Zero FT’s from him is not good.

  17. NT is relatively healthy for the first time in a while and plays worse. I am still amazed that McCasland lets Z Simmons sit on the bench and plays J. Simmons when it counts. J. Simmons is a tough dude, but is horrible on the offensive side of the court and is a big liability on the defensive side at 6'4 trying to guard post players.

  21. I would go with NT, being a homer. I do think the past back more than a few years accounts for little. Salaries, facilities, and support are major factors. The overriding factor is however the chances for success. La Tech and USM are limited by both budget and location. FAU has advantages in recruiting and budget, but also has little support. Marshall budget and attendance numbers are close to NT. however their head football coach is paid significantly less. Maybe the best job is ODU, which has far the biggest budget of any CUSA school and decent support.

  22. Only one I take issue with is FAU. UNT should be at least 4th on that list. Big potential and financial commitment from the current admin could bump it up higher depending on how that's factored in.

  25. Anyone have any more info on this? I was poking around looking for new articles on Mason and I came across this interesting bit of news. The film festival is in Denton in April. https://www.tulsaworld.com/communities/skiatook/news/osiyo-voices-of-the-cherokee-people-showcasing-special-features-at/article_4f46b2a9-dad3-56a2-8b89-14b396420d5a.html From the article: "The producers of Cherokee Nation’s Emmy award-winning documentary series, “Osiyo, Voices of the Cherokee People,” have been selected to screen their short films at several major film festivals in 2019. What began as a monthly, 30-minute news magazine-style program in February 2015 has morphed into a weekly show and reshaped the way the tribe shares about its history, language, culture and people. Now Cherokee Nation is sharing those stories as individual short documentaries, competing in film festivals across the globe. The series, and the short documentaries within it, has earned numerous regional, national and international accolades, including five Heartland Regional Emmy awards and most recently Best Short Documentary at the LA Skins Fest, which featured more than 70 Native American, independent productions representing hundreds of reservations, nations and tribal organizations."

  27. I totally agree that it takes time to build a program. At the same time some fans are tired of waiting, this fan base is starving for a winner. They came out to the pit at 8,000 plus to see Western Kentucky for crying out loud. So my question is this, what is coming in the pipeline? There are other schools in CUSA with worse facilities than North Texas and are performing at a higher level, so what is the problem here? I say this with the utmost humility.

  28. Product is far from were we want it to be, but there is no denying the improvement from the Benford era. Yes, the argument is anyone could be better than Benford, but it takes time to rebuilt a team from that disaster. I think what happens with McCasland's intensely coached teams, are they just wear down both physically and mentally as the season comes to an end. Obviously the time, that the team should be peaking. Hopefully they can regroup before the tournament.

  30. Right now UNT is a team that if they don't have a good night from deep they have a slim chance of winning. Especially if the other team is hitting from deep.

  35. https://sportschatplace.com/picks/college-basketball/north-texas-vs-fau-2-28-19-college-basketball-pick-odds-and-prediction North Texas is an impressive 12-2 at home this season, however, although their winning games outright, the Mean Green has struggled recently ATS at home. FAU is a decent team and as I expect this to be a low-scoring battle, I’m taking the Owls and the points in this one. Pick: FAU Owls +9 We'll know for sure in a few hours...

  39. If I'm a head coach I look at recruiting, school administration, facilities, and salary for me and my staff. Consistency and winning tradition only goes so far. It's a what-have-you-done-lately that matters to recruits. FAU has no tradition and no fan support. La Tech is in the middle of no where. So Miss can't pay their coaches. Marshall has to rely on questionable "students" to compete. The top three jobs are probably us, La Tech, and Marshall. Honestly, if all CUSA teams were trying to hire the same head coach, who would that coach pick? Right now it would be very difficult for that coach to pass on North Texas.

  40. Baseball and softball losses are weighted way differently. People don't take them into account near as much because people's #1 pitchers are way better. Hope is 6-1 for instance, the rest of our staff is 3-3. Probably not an exact science but in baseball/softball I think more credit is given for quality wins than a bad loss because of that.
