  1. This is the kind of hor$hit WB and the AD Dept has to deal with in regards to the Denton Record Chronicle. Our softball team and it’s new coach Rodney DeLong traveled last Friday to College Station and kicked ass. They went 4-1 overall in the Aggie Classic that included a run-rule curb stomping Saturday of the host and 20th ranked A&M team 10-2, our first win over a ranked team in three seasons. We won 9-0 over UNC and won 8-7 in an extra inning marathon (12) over Cal Baptist Friday evening. We then run ruled A&M Saturday afternoon then lost by 1 in extra innings (9) Saturday evening to Cal Baptist. Then we run ruled Northern Colorado 8-2 Sunday morning. So what do the morons at the DRC put accross the top of the sports page this morning? They print a headline teaser across the top of the sports page that UNT Softball “lose in tourneys”. No DUMBASSES!!! North Texas WINS in tourneys! North Texas outscored their opponents 40-17. North Texas won Sunday’s game and went 4-1 in the tournament and kicked the crap out of the ranked team. And yeah, I know it’s the printed version and not online. Despite what you may think or say a lot of potential donors/season ticket holders/supporters of NT Athletics still read the print paper.....but that’s completely beside the point here. It’s the mindset and the negative attitude this paper has always had and always will as long as the Patterson (Ok State Alumni) family runs it. North Texas spends a lot of money advertising in that POS rag. North Texas is Denton’s largest employer. You’d think the days of the constant little negative jabs and back stabbing would be over? It’s not. Effing pisses me off man!!! Rick

  2. I don't mean this to be bashing GH, because I really have a lot of respect for him and his family, but did we just upgrade at OC? Obviously time will tell, but I feel really good about this.

  4. home run hire. Love that he went out side the box and got a very bright young mind. He is not afraid to branch out like so many coaches are.

  5. http://footballscoop.com/news/sources-seth-littrell-makes-offensive-coordinator-hire-north-texas/ North Texas: UNT will hire Eastern Washington offensive coordinator Bodie Reeder as its new offensive coordinator, sources tell FootballScoop. In addition to the Reeder hiring, sources said Littrell will promote associate head coach, passing game coordinator and inside receivers coach Tommy Mainord to co-offensive coordinator. Mainord is an original member of Littrell’s North Texas staff.

  6. Rick is on point here. The DRC, the smaller online news sources, and even our own NT Daily do not always paint the school in a great light. Which is a shame, most cities rally around their schools. I think we all see the progress and good things happening, but it would be nice if media outlets gave less "opinion" pieces and more actual fact based reporting. It is not journalism to start with an agenda and then print things that fit into your already held beliefs. The NT Daily is critical of the school for not "supporting" it pretty often, when its funds were cut by student government (not the school itself but students) to provide additional funds for other areas. They don't mention that the new areas are things like academic support, that other orginizations also had funding cut and that that they get paid when most student orginizations don't. It is not a ton of money to be sure, but I feel like they have let this frustration seep into their journalism a bit more than they realize. As for the DRC it makes no sense, as a growing orginization and a huge Denton employer you think they would really cover the school well and highlight the positive a bit better. I think this is why things like the Athletic have taken off, good journalists writing in depth, researched articles is a winner. Edit for clarity: My comments are about the DRC as a whole, not Brett's coverage.

  7. That is just being lazy and assuming that UNT softball team was already going to lose. I’m surprise Wren didn’t go down there and throw the newspaper at them.

  8. I agree with you about the stupidity of the headline, but not the motivation. I think part of the problem is writers that really do not know enough about sports to be writing about them. This is particularly true for the student newspapers' current staff.. The headlines are also usually not written by the sports writers but rather the editors. NT beating a ranked team should obviously have been the headline or even NT softball starts season well. Highlighting one loss out of 5 games is totally absurd.

  9. UNT split its doubleheader, TWU lost. The teaser was written by a designer looking to tie both stories together. It might not have been the best choice, but it was accurate. We are not overly negative. Here's our post from Sunday night on UNT posting huge wins in softball and women's basketball: https://www.dentonrc.com/sports/the-sunday-leftovers----unt-softball-women-s/article_176881a1-2383-5d17-a448-0f7f1b7d6953.html Here's our season preview on UNT's softball team and how a coaching change bodes well for the future: https://www.dentonrc.com/sports/softball-unt-hoping-new-coach-delong-can-be-missing-piece/article_2869684c-ae45-5835-bb07-5c893d8076dd.html The inside headlines highlighted the positives from the weekend.

  10. Great hire. I’m very excited. But I can’t wait to see the headline for tomorrow’s DRC Spprts Page. ”THOUGH UNABLE TO WIN EVERY GAME HE’S COACHED IN, UNT OFFICIALS ARE EXCITED TO BRING IN A SUCCESSFUL AND EXPERIENCED OC IN BODIE REEDER” Rick

  11. Two quick points: The guy made about $60,000 last year - so we are getting a steal financially His recruiting area is DFW - so he already knows the area well A+ on the hire!!

  13. Can you give an example of what you mean? I'm not challenging you (you're far from alone in feeling this way), I'm just wondering if I could start to spot it if you explained what you mean. I've given Vito a jab on numerous occasions for spelling and grammar errors, but with an appreciation of how quick the turnaround on articles has to be. I probably also have a subconscious bias in favor of him because he was giving me a consistent stream of UNT sports info before there were actually multiple journalists covering it.

  15. So I look up what TWU did this weekend at the OC/UCO Invitational. They had 4 games scheduled. TWU played three games and lost all three getting outscored 8-22, and one game was canceled due to weather. But according to Vitto....in his and some other person’s mind ”The teaser...was accurate” because TWU going 0-3 and getting outscored 8-22 is the equivalent to North Texas going 4-1 and outscoring the opposition 40-17 and a win over #20 in the nation.. Again...BIZAARE! Rick

  16. I think the point is that we can pay a guy who made 60k last year, 250k this year, versus paying a guy who made 250k last year, 500k this year. My grammar was probably atrocious right there, but you hopefully understand what I'm saying.

  17. Only someone with your ability would take a 4-1 record,....of which the final game of the tournament resulted in a win for us.....as a loss. No one......NO ONE in their right freaking mind takes a 4-1 tournament result, in which we outscored the opponents 40-17 and applies the word LOSE to describe it in a headline. Rick

  18. Very nice hire. He was in charge of recruiting DFW for EWU. So he should have relationships with area coaches.

  19. I don't know his exact role at EWU (if he called plays) but Eastern is a yearly offensive juggernaut and is a quarterback factory. And the Big Sky is no joke. How they did last year- https://goeags.com/cumestats.aspx?path=football&year=2018&

  20. To me it’s directly intentional. It’s been going on for far too long in regards to the university. If there’s any chance at all to diminish a Mean Green accomplishment they’ll do it. Been going on for years. Going into Saturday evening, about the time our basketball game with wKYj was finishing up the first half’s its game,... NT Softball was 3-0 in that tournament. How anyone comes away with “lose in tourneys” at that point is just unbelievable? Afterward, we lost in extra innings by 1 late that evening in a cold, miserable drizzle but came back and run ruled CB the next morning finishing 4-1. The DRC had almost 30 hours to decide to print that head line. Again...how in hell anyone paying an ounce of attention to the area sports results gets “Lose in tourneys” from a 4-1 tournament result is just bizarre? Rick

  22. Exciting hire. Also of note, included in his recruiting area at Eastern Washington... https://goeags.com/coaches.aspx?rc=119 He seems to bring a new creativity that I think will serve our squad well. The leadership of next season's seniors wouldn't allow for a relaxed spring practice anyway, but I think having new blood on the staff will force players to be more engaged as they learn new schemes/plays while also giving our defense new looks and wrinkles when they scrimmage. The continuity last year served us well and I will root for Harrell in Southern California, but this hire looks very promising.

  23. DRC accurate teasers: Mean Green miss on Major OC FCS OC comes to visit soon-gone NY Sub Hub. might hang around and win games Tune’s dog still missing: former EWU OC could help UNT loses OC. Still nothing at Oak Island.

  30. I can't give you a specific example. Can't say I archive his pissing on UNT. But I've noticed it over time. And he does put out good stuff from time to time. Not trying to bash Brett too hard. And it may just be the tone in which he writes that gets under my skin. But I think it's more than that. I think he does or used to have an axe to grind and he grinded it with subtle blows in his writing.

  33. This season is by NO MEANS over, but let’s just look at what we have on the floor next year. We have one glaring weakness, and that’s size. We live and die with our guards, it is what it is. Next season everyone returns except Duffy, Miller and Arikawe. Duffy and Miller are big losses. We bring in a single recruit (so far) in the PG Jalen Jackson (who looks like he will be special and can run alongside or spell Woolridge), Larry Wise was highly touted coming out of high school and hopefully Alcindor and Niko can give us some sort of minutes with some size. With the remaining ships we might find a transfer or JUCO banger as well. I think we have a good shot to continue the current trajectory or move upward.

  39. A far better headline for the front page could have been the "UNT starts year 2-0 - First time since '09" or even something commending Rodney Long's first season and the positive start he had over the weekend. Highlighting the wins on the homepage of a newspaper, or even anything more positive, would make me want to read an article.

  40. Hey Brett, may wanna fix this: "Tommy Mainord is expected to promote Tommy Mainord to co-offensive coordinator, according to the report."

  41. Some one should tell Vito it is ok to be a "homer" beat writer, most turn into that after a few years. It appears that Brett is going to retire in Denton, and no one is going to give him accolades, because he bend over backward to present an unbiased view. Report it correctly and be critical when it is needed, but it certainly doesn't hurt to express a little more support for the home team.

  43. I think the real issue is that when a school has to telegraph plans publicly people with adjacent land see dollar signs. When approached they are happy to sell you property for 4 times its appraised value. It is not like the school sets out to hurt small businesses, but the media, alumni and students are generally sympathetic to the narrative of big corporation vs tiny family business that gets run out as leverage against the school. The prospect of eminent domain is the leverage the school has to get negotiations into a reasonable zone. I believe all of the Union food joints are owned by the school as franchises so they wouldnt be able to do that, but I am told there is interest in trying to secure them a spot in the new development across the street. That seems like a good outcome for all.

  44. Remember, he didn't turn down the K-State job purely because of his love for Denton and UNT. He turned it down when K-State would not allow him to bring his entire staff/pay his staff what he thought they deserved/demanded he keep Snyder Jr. on his staff. I think he has already solidified his position as a hot young coaching name in coaching circles for open P5 gigs. As long as they don't have a losing season, some school will give him the freedoms that K-State wouldn't. Plus, you never want to be the guy replacing the legend. Wanna be the guy replacing the guy who replaced the legend.

  47. NT came out nervous and WKU came out on a mission to beat the team with the best overall record in the conference. The shots didn't fall in the first half for NT partially because they were afraid to challenge Bassey. Smart was a liability but the two games before he looked the best he has all year. NT must have a more consistent Smart, but he is way too valuable to give up on even if NT had the depth they needed. NT is hurting for depth and with Duffy and J. Simmons both out, they are in trouble. NT was playing with Gibson, Smart, Draper, Z. Simmons, Miller and Woolridge. Those waiting for Arikawe to be anything other than a severe liability on the court will continue to be disappointed. That is 6 players and only one over 6'3. Yet some of you seem to think NT should have run over the most physical tall team in the league. Yes, it was a blown opportunity and any of a myriad of factors could have easily turned it into a win. I am as disappointed in the loss as anyone, but I really admire a team that just does not give up.
