  1. It is my understanding that Seth will get the New York Jets job since he is accustomed to green uniforms....developing.

  2. I have confirmed through my sources that Rhule is gone and that SL is leaving to become an assistant investigator for the Special Prosecutor's Office in a complicated trade which involves bears (the animal), bears (humans), a keg of Brunch Money, Patrick Stewart, the New York Jets, the FBI, a pinecone, and lubricant. IT'S OFF-SEASON HOORAY! Other off-season news: - The AAC is breaking up, and in order to avoid being in a conference with any team they "don't like," SMU is joining the Hokkaido American Football Association. - UTSA is being split between the Texas, North Texas and San Antonio College systems, and is now NTUTSAC. - In order to add stability, the Sun Belt is adding St. Mary's University and Texas Wesleyan. - Dabo is actually the religious alt-universe Nick Saban. - Lee Corso is starting a convention that travels with Gameday named "Furry Silver Fanz" and full fursuits are required. More on these developments as they occur to me.

  3. I think SL is good coach and has done wonders for the UNT program. Enough thanks can never be given to him for what he has accomplished here. I am suprised that ever job that comes up has his name attachted to it. He has not won a bowl and we failed to win the big game when needed and have not won a CUSA championship. I would hate to lose him but just suprised how all the schools are coming after him.

  4. Ruhle has a great reputation across all of football. But I don't think the Jets hire him--I think he will be at Baylor next year. SL will be here for one more year, finish with Mason Fine, and go on to much greener ($$$) P5 pastures. As for SL not winning anything big here yet, you have to remember that to the rest of the college football world, all they know about North Texas in the previous 10 years to him being here was that we hired a high school coach and then hired a retread coach that led to the worst loss in modern college football history. Almost universally, folks in college football circles felt this job was a coach killer, since it hadn't produced a coach jumping upward since Jerry Moore left for Tech in 1981. When they see that Seth Littrell has turned a team that went 1-11 in the season before he got there, with the worst collection of QBs in the country, and having suffered thru that awful loss at home to PSU, not to mention that the overall record for that 10 years before was a whopping 36-97 that covered 4 different head coaches (Dickey, Dodge, Mac, and Chico). SL's gone to three bowl games in three years, won a division championship, beat Arkansas in a moneybag game with the best punt return of all time, and has gone 23-17. That will get lots of attention of ADs and fans across the country with that kind of change at a place like this.

  5. Furthermore, now that I'm annoyed let me flex because I do know what I'm talkembout. I've got NFL snap data for the past 10 or so seasons. I literally ran the numbers. Better passing offenses are better at scoring points than better run offenses.

  9. That USU Bowl game looks bad because Mason got hurt early. We probably still lose, and its probably a convincing loss, but it isn't 52-13, either...

  10. If he takes Spavital, he'd better take on a Defensive coordinator with some HC experience. EDIT: This is really starting to look similar to Dodge-to-NT.

  13. Never shoulda unpinned that megathred. Except everyone was tired of it. Well at least this time the class would be inked if it were to happen. But too early to fret, some dominoes may be teetering a bit, but so far none have fallen.

  28. The same could be said about SL and he's staying. Difference now is they're head coaches close to home for the fist time in their young careers. They have the job title, money, and ideal work/life situation to be selective in their next job for the first time in their careers.

  30. Rick, while I agree with the premise that good defense and running the ball is a recipe for success, the landscape of football, especially college football, has changed from 3 yards and a cloud of dust to more of a high scoring affair. While you do need to run the ball and stop the ball, balance is key and that balance should lean more towards the passing side of the game if you want continued success in today's game. Also, a spread attack is what helps keep lower schools competitive with the big schools. Talented, big linemen are harder to come by than WR's. Plus, it is more likely than not that you can get more talented receivers on the field than you have DB's to cover them, creating mismatches. If you are those blue chip programs, ball control can work, it is just a lot harder to implement successfully year in and year out when you don't have all 5-star players.

  36. where does the "Had a niche college basketball podcast in 2012-to-not watching a single game, UNT or otherwise, by 2016" fall on the poll?

  37. More like the other way around in that the other teams won’t have a talent gap on defense like the Lamar’s, Kansas’, Eastern Washington’s , Baylor’s, Stephen F.’s, Houston’s...etc 3-5 Sunday’s each season. It’ll be Texas and Oklahoma defense EVERY Sunday each season.. Rick

  40. It is fair to say Carl Pelini would’ve been a poor choice but DeRuyter has a couple of decent seasons at Fresno before it went south (just like Mac). Venebles is still not a head coach to this day so this is all a moot point. Plenty of highly successful coordinators have been terrible head coaches so until he wins something as a head coach there is no argument to be made here. He was never coming here as a DC so why are we bringing his Clemson DC success up?

  41. This is a bit of a different gig. He theoretically no longer has a talent gap (Texas, Oklahoma) to overcome because of the salary cap. I bet he does ok.

  43. Top 25? I can take it or leave it. Baby steps. Last year we won the CBI tournament .We need to play in the NCAA tournament this year and win at least one game. That will go a long way to getting more respect and solid recruits coming to Denton. Lastly, make sure we hang on to Coach McCasland.

  44. Did he really turn it around though? He had one good season with us (nearly every major contributor from that good team was recruited by the prior regime) and before you know it he’s losing by 59 to an FCS school on homecoming. As for Iowa State, was he really good for them either? He had an overall record of 56-85. That’s terrible. He was 21 games under .500 after 3 years at Iowa State and was a little under .500 for the last 9 years.
    2 points
  45. He had one winning season in 5 years. Don't mistake my post for defending McCarney. He ran the ball and played defense, what did that lead to? The single most embarrassing loss in FBS history. McCarney ran the ball and played defense all the way to a 22-32 record.
