The NYT isn't going to be popular with some on this board, but it's really big for one of our players to get some press there. Edit: and we still cant get decent press from the rags in Ft Worth and Dallas. It's laughable.14 points

And if North Texas would have done things the right way, like they're doing now, 30+ years ago, people would be saying UCF could be the next North Texas! I'm still bitter. I'm still pissed at past UNT administrators.8 points

Great article!!! It would be nice if the Dallas or FW press paid half as much attention to a local FBS team with the best record in Texas(9 - 3), as they do to smu (5 - 7) or TCU (6 - 6).6 points

Especially for our flatlander cousins a USU fan's [and one-time player's] thoughts on USU's defensive personnel. USU runs what looks like a 3-4, but one of the 4 is a converted SS who brings a lot of pressure, but is also present in pass defense when not chasing opponent's QBs around. They're a lot of fun to watch, and are pretty stout against the run, notwithstanding so many teams in USU's division of the MWC being so run oriented [i.e., Air Force] pushing the numbers up. LB USU's best returning player on defense was injured in pre-season drills, missed almost half the season, and hasn't been able to break into the starting lineup: Suli Tamaivena [38 tackles, 5.0 TFL, 1.0 sacks, 2 QBH](whose twin brother plays LB for UNM). Here are your starters and backups on the inside: David Woodward [124 tackles, 12.5 TFL, 5.5 sacks, 1 INT, 2 FF] and Chase Christiansen [91 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 0.5 sacks, 1 FF] are your starters. Woodward, a Soph, has gotten some national attention. Tipa Galea'i [58 tackles, 11.0 TFL, 8.0 sacks, 1 INT (for TD), 7 QBH] and Dontrell Roquemore [69 tackles, 8.5 TFL, 2.0 sacks, 3 INTs, 4 QBH] are your outside guys. Tipa is a force of nature who transferred in from TCU. Don't know what happened there to cause him to want the change. Roquemore is the converted SS I referred to. This has been the funnest group to follow this season. Going to miss them after this season. DL The biggest producers here are Fua Leilua [37 tackles, 5.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks, 6 QBH], Adewale Adeoye [35 tackles, 4.0 TFL, 1.0 sacks, 2 QBH], Devon Anderson [32 tackles, 3.0 TFL, 1.5 sacks, 3 QBH], Dalton Baker [32 tackles, 3.0 TFL, 1.5 sacks, 1 QBH], and Chris Unga [26 tackles, 1.5 TFL, 0.5 sacks]. Another with not so much by way of gaudy stats, but a steady player that has an occasional standout play is Jacoby Wildman [14 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 2.0 sacks, 1 QBH]. A solid, sometimes showy, group. They absorb a lot of blockers, freeing up the LBs to do their derring-do. DB USU lost two of its best back end defenders in the last half of the season. Good news for your QB. Bad news for us. Boise really took advantage. Here are the most productive guys: Gaje Ferguson [68 tackles, 3.0 TFL, 1.0 sack, 2 INT, 4 PBU], Aaron Wade [43 tackles, 2.0 TFL, 3 INT, 2 PBU], DJ Williams [34 tackles, 3.0 TFL, 1.0 sack, 2 INT, 11 PBU], Cameron Haney [22 tackles, 2.5 TFL, 7 PBU], and Jamarcus Ingraham [19 tackles, 6 PBU]. Fortenberry and Bond are the missing wounded. Did I mention we really miss the two DB guys who are out for the season? But for those two injuries, I call this game for a USU defensive tour de force. Now, I only hope we can win a track meet. Good luck. This is going to be a lot of fun in Albuquerque!5 points

I'm sure this will go over well on the CUSA message board. Some of those folks are already miffed at us for all the attention we got this year already. 🙂4 points

I will be 100% satisfied if the G5 gets 1 guaranteed spot. Why? Because it means every year the G5 gets at least 1 opportunity to disrupt the P5 party. Boise State, TCU (pre Big 12), UCF... There are championship worthy G5 teams every year. It's just about getting invited to the show. Get a guaranteed spot, regularly beat some P5 ass, and make up ground. It's about baby steps and it's quite frankly one of the best opportunities to make some noise due to it being the biggest stage. UCF would have caused problems last year and, were there an 8 team playoff this year, would be flat out better than every P5 team in the playoff except for Alabama. OU and Clemson would be tough matchups and I think they would beat Notre Dame. Baby steps.4 points

That's why we are born with two. Hedlund will be fine kicking with his left leg, but his range will drop about 10 yards. Kid's a gamer.3 points

Appreciate you posting the O and D overviews. I own a lot up at Bear Lake in Fish Haven. Learned about the area from Coach Motta, whose daughter is a neighbor. He was tight with Merlin Olsen. The two of them had a nice BL coffee (maybe decaf?!) clatch with the athlete trifecta rounded out by Jazz assistant coach Phil Johnson. Love the lake (Juanito Bandito, Bear Cave Drive In, Rockslide, Limber Pine, etc) but I would trade my near three acre lot overlooking the lake for a small place in Logan in a moment. That is a great town, and I really appreciate how it is in an isolated enough media market that gives USU great coverage. Great people, great views and great outdoors. Really looking forward to this game and hoping we squeak out a timely slight coaching advantage to squeak out a win. GMG3 points

Well...if a lot of these players transfer, then it looks like SMU is going to have a lot of cap space. Look for them to make some big moves in free agency over the offseason. 🤨3 points

Torrey gets 200 yards and we get a 2-possession win. 43-35 If Torrey is stopped or *cough* not used, we could lose in a very ugly way.3 points

One of my favorite articles in a good long while. what resonates is the talk of Baker and our administration. Getting lost behind all the faces and salaries of the coaching staff is the importance of the people higher up. With Wren and Co, I like to think we have what it takes to sustain ourselves through (say, like UCF) 3 coaches in 6 years.2 points

https://sportschatplace.com/cfb-picks/2018/12/15/north-texas-vs-utah-state-new-mexico-bowl-12/15/18-college-football-pick-odds-and-prediction I’m not sure how much stock I can put into the Aggies without Wells calling the shots, so I’ll take a shot with North Texas as I feel the Mean Green can definitely keep this one within a touchdown if not win it outright.2 points

Baby steps. They will never go directly from 4 to 12 or 16. Going to 8 would be a fantastic step in the right direction. Giving 1 of the 8 slots (guaranteed) to a G5 school would be absolutely huge, because it creates less of a perceptual separation between the have and have not conferences. Cross your fingers that they go to 8 ASAP. It would be a great thing.2 points

Article states the ball could get rolling on this as soon as January 7th and that several people involved want this implemented soon. I want to applaud West Virginia president for recognizing the committee's arrogance regarding UCF and the G5. https://syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/2810445-college-footballs-influential-voices-ready-to-discuss-8-team-playoff-format.amp.html "An eight-team CFP could include automatic bids for the Power Five conference champions, as well as three at-large bids, with one of those potentially guaranteed to a Group of Five school like UCF. West Virginia president E. Gordon Gee told The Athletic he doesn't think college football should wait for the ESPN contract to expire before making alterations to the system. "I also want to be very clear: I think that there's arrogance of us not taking a look at someone like the University of Central Florida, just saying, 'Well, they're not worthy of it,'" Gee said. "Maybe they are worthy of it based upon a number of considerations that need to be taken into account.""1 point
