  1. This is one of the all time ridiculous posts. I'm at every home game and watch every road game (despite the difficulty of having all the outlets). I sit on the south 35 yard line. Baker is on the sidelines every game. Was there yesterday with associate AD Mosely. When I watch the road games including Liberty (in an epic downpour) he's there. Disagree with his statement if you want but to act like he isn't out there is false.

  2. Ok. I know some aren’t going to like this. First, I agree with what Wren said. He’s absolutely right. However....I don’t agree with him saying/tweeting it. What’s the upside? Are people that didn’t go, or left after the delay, etc gonna read that and say “you know what.....thanks UNT AD. Shame on me. I’ll go next time” No they’re not. His tweet isn’t going to lead to increased attendance. On the flip side, it’s gonna put a magnifying glass on the horrible attendance for that game. It’s gonna get an article written about it with a big ol picture of an empty stadium. It’s gonna make the program look bad. To those with just one eye on the program, it doesn’t help with our perception. Bottom line, I don’t know what good comes out of tweeting what he tweeted (despite how 100% correct he was) I am a huge Wren Baker fan. But I don’t like publicly criticizing the fans. Especially in the middle of a season where we’ve broken 2 single game attendance records and are on track to break the season avg record No upside.

  3. - We are bowl eligible for a third consecutive year, which has only occurred once before. The other time? Dickey’s run of 4 straight. - Nate Brooks is tied for the national lead among FBS players in interceptions (4) - Rico Bussey is tied for third nationally in receiving TD’s (8) - E.J. Ejiya had 6.5 sacks, which puts his at #13 nationally. The guy at #1 has 8.5 - Cole Hedlund is #5 nationally in field goals made with 13 - We are #6 nationally in passing yards with 2,283 and #9 in total offensive yards with 3,355 (also #9 in total points with 279) - We are giving up an average of 17.6 points a game (We gave up 35 points a game last season). So that’s roughly HALF of last season’s average...granted, last year included the two FAU debacles - Yesterday our defense forced 2 turnovers, and had 4 sacks (while giving up ZERO second half points). This is a special time in Mean Green land. Regardless of how things go at UAB (I think we win), you are robbing yourself of some rare memories if you aren’t in the house for Homecoming and the rest of this season

  4. I loved that 1pm kickoff. We meet up at the square for some beers and pre-game. Headed to the game and had some good ole day drinking with friends while watching the game. Post game headed to Oak St Tavern for some Noble Rey sour beers... Then had big ass bowl of Ramen on Carroll. I was still able to get home in Dallas before 9 and watch the PAC-12 games. Awesome day. The night games get me home too late and make it hard to plan childcare.

  5. He is 10000000000% correct and, for the sake of getting us to ALL act big time, I’m glad he said it. He has delivered everything we asked for when RV left. Littrell has earned every dime of his contract. The players have done their part. He should expect that the in-stand product matches the on-field one. If Wren said “we handled all of the customer service requests at an excellent level TWICE this season, you should just be happy” we would (justifiably) call him out. We would say that this is the level of effort we should have always expected and he gets no credit for meeting it twice. And NOBODY, athletic department employee or fan, had wet feet during that game yesterday.

  6. I was startled by a head line in the print edition of the Dallas Morning News this afternoon. On page 6CC, just under the coverage of the NT game the headline read "Dominant Houston remains unbeaten in C-USA play." Now, technically that's true as no CUSA team has beaten them. But within the article, it reads"5-1, 2-0 Conference USA." Let's welcome the Cougars back!

  7. I would rather play in the Servepro Bowl VS a P5 also-ran than in the NO Bowl VS the SBC champ... 10 times out of 10. Not because of the proximity to Dallas, but because of the perception. The Troy smackdown last year hurt perception because we're supposed to be better than a SBC team. Period. Doesn't matter that it was the conference champ & they were a VERY good team. On the flip-side, a P5 team is supposed to be better than a G5 team. Period. So you put yourself in a more favorable situation when you win... and you lose nothing if you lose.

  9. I think this thread is proving out why we have a variety of start times.

  10. I always prefer the earlier start times unless it's in September when it's way too ridiculously hot. It's a great feeling that I can enjoy half the day doing NT activities and still have most of the rest of the day and spend time with the family, friends etc. Regardless of timing I'll still be there but given we have 6 home games a year and have a long time to plan these things I don't think start times should ever make a difference.

  11. I understand why WB is frustrated, but I don't blame people for sitting this one out. As "nice" as it was at kickoff, people make decisions based on conditions leading up to the game. Much of DFW was experiencing monsoon like conditions, flooding, thunder/lightning. This kind of thing happens.

  12. I’m good with what Wren said, he wasn’t criticizing he was encouraging fans to come. Like it or not, Alumni, students and Dentonites (?) are under no obligation to come to a game. They are customers and it’s your job (AD) to sell the product to the customer. Sonic doesn’t call out people for not buying their food, they figure out a way to get them to buy food and make it easy and enjoyable to do so. 2 winning seasons isn’t considered “consistent” winning, so you can’t expect what has been mostly 30+ years of mediocrity with a few flashes of winning to be overcome in what amounts to about 18 months. I love what Wren is doing, but there is plenty he can do to make game day easier and more enjoyable. - I had some first timers come for La Tech. They were quite confused why there is such a long line to get into a half empty parking lot when you arrive early. 7 games in and we still can’t figure that out? - Get some freakin options in the team store, it’s embarrassing. Can we not get more shirt options, pull over options, etc? - why can I still not buy a UNT branded yeti. That have schools I have never heard of as options. When I called yeti they said we have to talk to UNT. - lines to get in the game, put more ticket people on the student side and north end where everyone comes in. We have people standing around doing nothing on the west side. There is more, but Wren and company have plenty they can work on to make it easier and more enjoyable to be a fan. That will also help get butts in seats more regularly.

  13. https://meangreennation.com/this-uab-game-is-for-the-division/ Tie breaking scenarios contained within. If I were not an NT fan, I would be rooting for an NT win simply for the fact that it means that a three way tie means that 1) we will all care about the CFP decisions, and 2) those money games Tech and UAB scheduled could determine their fate in the league. UPDATE: Put the stuff about the CFP being 25 teams only.

  15. Boise doesn't exactly have a ton of pro options or other entertainment options to consider for the good folks up that way. And, of course, Boise fans never watched their school get self-demoted to a low level of play for 12 years, then follow up with several years of losing. Boise basically did the exact opposite of this, while taking advantage of their market size to become the only game in town.

  16. Well I don't know. Playing FAU at their place is not something I would look forward to. Sure they are not quite what they were last year, but it sure didn't go well for NT the last two times.

  17. Again, You're on GMG.com. I was there. Many of us on here were also there. The casual fans... which, based on years and years of losing football (including two 1-11 seasons in the past 10 years), are a vast majority... may or may not. And no one is on here representing them, so I figured I'd play a little Devils Advocate. Because, those same casual fans are on Twitter & can see what Wren Baker says there.

  19. Most people do not prioritize Mean Green Football over heavy rains. Some people do. My family & I were there. I don't care if other families decided not to come. That's their decision. We were just unlucky that Saturday was awfully forecasted & soggy. It happens. We DEFINITELY don't need to try and shame any fans for not coming out. That's how you turn people off your program.

  20. I stayed home. Pouring rain, lightning and a tornado warning were happening when I would have needed to leave for the game. A tornado ended up hitting Waxahachie HS a few miles from my house. I wanted to be at the game but getting in the car and driving through that with my wife and kids would have been dumb. I regret nothing Wren Baker. Go Mean Green!

  22. Well...who cares. Attendance struggles all over the country in poor weather. Some more so than others. It is what it is. Had it been a beautiful day with that type of attendance than the AD and his department has a platform to stand on. Otherwise he's basically saying, "I'm disappointed that more people didn't take the chance to come sit in the pouring rain with a moving kick time with the possibilities of delays to further your chances of being in the potential driving rain for even longer while I and my staff look down upon you all from our perch indoors." Or was he planning on walking around in the monsoon had there been one shaking hands and kissing babies?

  23. One can hope that it communicates to our fanbase that the expectation level has increased for this athletic program and that we all have a part to play in helping them get there. We are, after all, having this discussion in this thread so somebody clearly read his tweet. I have been beating the “you don’t build a consistent winner by taking the ‘show me something and THEN I’ll show up’ approach” drum for 20 years since I was a student in Talons. I’ve begged, bribed, poked and prodded my peers and others to show up. But my voice is just that of a fan. When the athletic director (and the head coach and players have echoed it BTW) comes out and actually says “hey fans, we’re doing our part so do yours” it should communicate to all that we the fan are a part of that championship vision we all clamor for. It also sends a clear message to his head football coach and the players that he is willing to publicly demand the community to acknowledge the progress they have made by showing up. That part of his job, supporting his people, can’t be forgotten either. If people want to ignore him, or get inexplicably bent out of shape because he speaks truth, then so be it (I know you are not doing this).

  24. He's the coach of the team, so he has final say, but I'm skeptical here. I think the defense's performance through the first 3.75 quarters of the SMU game was just as dominant, if not moreso... while the offense was WAAAAAY more productive. The SMU beatdown was the best OVERALL performance I've seen this season.

  25. My daughter and I went to the game and right before kick off she very excitedly exclaims "I didn't know girls could be referees." She then pointed to the sideline judge, it was a woman. I am glad she was able to see that example. It made here like the game even more. Just wanted to throw this in here. GMG!

  26. I'll simplify it for him. 7:00 Kickoffs in September 6:00 Kickoffs in October 5:00 Kickoffs in November You can't be disappointed by the fans not filling the stadium when you are letting the people in the caviar suites pick the game times. Our fan base was made by tailgating but the caviar and bonbon crowd has their party upstairs during the games.

  27. I was there and by game time everything was great in terms of weather. But, to be fair, the time leading up to the game was pretty bad. I live in Celina and we had severe thunderstorm warnings and heavy, heavy rain. It would have been easy to just decide not to go. And, judging by the condition of the the Alumni Pavilion, the rain must have been very heavy in Denton, too. Plus, the lighting delay. I think it's understandable folks not showing given all these issues. But, a better effort could have been made at game time advising people of the current weather conditions and that it was Ok to come to the stadium (social media, email blast, etc.). The student section was a sad sight to see, so perhaps getting word to the students via whatever apps the school uses to communicate would have done some good, too. Lessons learned, but I expect the last two home games to be a big crowd. GMG

  29. In any aspect where NT needs more support, it is never the right idea to sweep it under the rug, and it is always the right idea to get the message out. Though in this case, the message would be stronger if you show a picture of a big program with a lot of people out even with weather complications. I don't recall if there was such a situation yesterday. If so, you would want to also put that out there as a contrast and say something like, 'we can be as good as this program, but it means we have to act like them'.

  30. This is a textbook self inflicted wound. Bad leadership @ UTSA. Our students should either steal that ugly thing, or build a replica of it, and then throw it on our Homecoming Bonfire and burn it.

  31. I'm having a hard time understanding the hype around UAB. I remember when the Seattle Seahawks had the legion of boom a few years ago, teams were winless the week after playing Seattle due to the physical beat down they would take against Seattle. In college I wouldn't surprised if the same was true for G5 when playing P5 teams. UAB has yet to play a P5 and won't play one until Texas A&M in a bit over a month. They are most likely benefiting from not having the injuries that tend to follow a game against most P5s but this might hurt them late in the season during that final push to the finish line. For those who don't know, their wins are against 2-4 Tulane by 7, 3-3 Charlotte, 1-6 Rice, 1-5 Savannah State, and a good win against 4-2 La Tech after they played a physically and emotionally draining game against UNT. They got beat down by 3-3 Coastal who just joined FBS a few years ago. I see other threads mention quality losses don't exist for G5s but I'll take a 2 point loss to La Tech over a 23 point loss to Coastal. Also, when talking about UAB's statistical rankings, take into consideration who they've played.

  37. I'm not really sure he was going over the top with things. He did answer the question. If I were to critique the situation, I think Wren should have left out the rain gear and going up to the suite level to greet guests response part of the tweet. But an AD that engages with the fans shows that he is going above and beyond the BASIC job description. A few people on here thought he sat up in a box during the games and after it was pointed out that he is standing on sidelines, we all have that much more respect that he is doing his job the way a successful/passionate AD should be doing it.

  40. I get that. His post on Twitter was broadcast to everyone with Twitter on their phones and then via DRC. TCE's point is that the optics is not good and it makes people defensive and feel like telling WB to shut the hell up. Even if he wasn't talking about their situation... Even the responses within this thread, between die hards, proves that point to be true.

Our competition are night activities... Bars, movies, date nights. I mean, obviously I love dates at Apogee, but the people in this board are not the norm.
