  1. I was on UNT's punt team for 4 years and knowing punt coverage pretty well I'd say he should have been annihilated. He never got close to a fair catch signal. Not even close. They don't need a rule change, Arkansas needs a better Special Teams Coach. It must have been pretty obvious on film that they were lazy in their coverage or our coaches wouldn't have made such a risky decision. It took nerves of steel to sell it, but 11 players on that field didn't do their jobs and they were massively embarrassed for it. I'd hate to be a player in their meeting room this week.

  2. This is total BS! This is because North Texas did it against Arkansas and not Arkansas doing it against North Texas! I was a punt returner for 4 years and you take the risk every time you don't fair catch a ball. You've got grown men running 40 yard dashes, coming from every angle, looking for kill shots. You accept the risk as did Brewer on the trick play. If they are REALLY worried about safety then put the 2 yard halo rule back into the rule book.

Largest ever donation to the athletic department Stomping of an SEC team at their stadium Meltdown of a proud Arkansas fanbase Dramatic move up in all polls, and votes in AP and Coaches top 25 polls A football return play that has got more publicity for the NT football than millions in advertising

  6. Well... I heard that originally, Smatresk wanted to bring back Dickey, and RV though Dodge should come back on a 1 year contract, renewable pending a winning season, throughout all this, some MAJOR donors thought that we should consider bringing Shane Falco, who once led the Washington Sentinels through an incredible four game stretch to make the playoffs, onboard. From what I've gathered, in a heated debate before they made their decision, Seth Littrell (sporting a full beard and no shirt) kicked down the door with a solid front kick. He then took a knife and ran across his chest, where he LITERALLY produced green blood (a la Billy, in Predator). There was silence in the room for a solid 45 seconds before he spoke... "If ANY of you b****** think that any of these other dopes you are considering can fix a program as well as I can, then you haven't seen me bring STD to a college campus yet." He then proceeded to walk around the room, push everyone against the wall and look them directly in the eye until they cried from existential moment they had just experienced looking into Littrell's eyes. At this moment, Littrell walked back to the center of the room and said "Men, the decision is yours. I want this job." Before anyone could speak, he was gone, and no one was sure if he had ever been in the room at all. A short 5 minutes later, Smatresk and RV were hugging and crying, the decision had been made, Seth Littrell was the new head coach at the University of North Texas

  7. Two of the most electrifying plays in football...are a kickoff return for a TD, and a punt return for a TD. And sadly, I bet that five years from now....neither one will exist.

  8. Just pass a NCAA rule that a visiting team can't beat an entitled SEC team. What kind of rule do they think can pass, you can't run back a punt? You have to signal if you are running back a punt? I guess they want a punt return rule that a team can't fake out the punting team. Yes, make the referees guess at the intent of a punt returner that didn't signal a fair catch and penalize him for sneakiness. I doubt NT has any interest in running that play again.

  10. .....because I’m trying to finally get down from this cloud and I don’t wanna land on anyone? We’ve had 38 or so hours now to digest what happened Saturday and I’ve thought about what it meant the most to me. I know what it means for our school and program...but what about myself? And every happy thought that keeps coming to my mind reverses back to the look on the faces of our long time suffering members of the Mean Green Nation who were there Saturday...and what they must have been feeling and thinking, and then for those who couldn’t be there as well. We had Mean Green royalty in the house on Saturday including Mean Joe Greene, Byron Gross, Lance White, Keith Chapman, Patrick Cobbs to name a few along with many other lettermen and those around me were just loving every second of it. I looked around and saw the faces of some of our greatest Greenbloods in history. Folks like ParksAndRecRick, Adler, NMGreen, UNT90, VeryGreen, KingwoodGreen, Ted87 and so many others and their friends and families. And again...the looks on their faces was indescribable. Then I started imagining it in my mind what had to of be the glow on the faces of SUMG, PlumMeanGreen, GrayEagle, Harry, DeepGreen, IslandEagle, MoGreen, Scotty Campbell, Kram1, Evan, meanrob, Emmitt, KingDL, and countless others who couldn’t be there Saturday but are part of a special group of long-suffering fans who have been here, traveling, buying in, and supporting in every type of environment imaginable from the miserable heat to the freezing rain..etc no matter what. It was the euphoria on those faces and the look in their eyes and the sound in their voices on the phone afterwards that means the most to me and makes me the happiest and proud to be a part of. Love you all, Ricky Paul

  14. This past weekend I was at a high school class reunion. One of the Board of Regent members was also there. We were both excited about our huge win over Arkansas. I said, “I’m loving this! Now we have to figure out some way to keep Texas Tech away from Coach Littrell.” He looked me squarely in the eye and said, “Texas Tech can’t afford Coach Littrell.” You may take that however you wish but I think Coach Littrell is with us for a while.

  15. http://amp.star-telegram.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/mac-engel/article218537150.html?__twitter_impression=true All of these great moments currently being collected at North Texas exist because the school narrowly did not choose a coach who would be pushed out at TCU and is now at Kansas. In the fall of 2015, the North Texas coaching position was vacant, again, and the preference of the athletic director to fill the job was then-TCU co-offensive coordinator Doug Meacham. The UNT President wanted Seth Littrell of North Carolina.

  18. I’ve got a plan: put our name in it, and the NCAA will take 2 years to review it. Then they’ll deny the application. Sorry Arkie, that’s how we roll.

  19. If the roles were reversed and Arkansas had ran the punt return trickery play, I would never think of complaining about their use of that play. Those Arkansas complaining fans are just displaying their dismay of getting totally dominated by what they consider an inferior opponent. It gives them something to concentrate on other then getting beat in all three phases of a football game. It's more fun to talk about than 6 interceptions by a dominating defense or why they could not stop a NT offense.

  24. Funny, I don't recall the NCAA looking into a rule change when UNC tried it TWICE in the past 3 years. Granted neither were successful, getting tackled after taking off on one and the refs called back the other even though there was no signal. Only now that a G5 embarrassed a P5 do they look into it.

  25. This is how you can tell you’re amongst North Texas fans. We finally have a team that can play all three phases of the game, has manhandled all our opponents, and we are doing everything we can to psychologically prepare for a loss. I’m not worried. Will they score some? Sure. Will they come out with their hair on fire? Sure. Will it be well in hand going into the 4th. Yep.

  31. I attended the USC vs UT game with my older brother. Free tickets, free food, and the eye candy was yummy! Of course I followed the UNT-UA game on my iPhone, occasionally watching UT when they had the ball. With each North Texas score, I would proudly show my brother the pounding we were giving the Hogs. He was duly impressed. The UT stadium displayed all the football scores throughout the game and I would anxiously wait for the board to show NTs amazing score over Arkansas. I tried to take a picture of it so I could post it here but sadly it was not clear enough. I had to wonder what all of those 103,000 UT and USC fans thought of our win over Arkansas. Gosh I was proud Saturday night.

  34. First off, I want to say I’ve enjoyed the last couple of weeks on here discussing the game with everyone. If you don’t mind, I plan on hanging around for a while and enjoying the rest of the season with you guys – it's not like I have much to watch from Fayetteville this year. 🙂 I’ll be at the La Tech game for sure, wouldn't miss hearing the fans appreciation for the team’s performance in person. I had to step back a little after the game and let you have your fun, it’s been a long time coming so I understand your excitement. I’m a hog fan though, so it was a little tough to take and I kept my visits to a minimum. I’m all better now though... mostly. 🙂 There are a few things I’d like to comment on now. First, I hope UNT stays focused and doesn't let too much of this go to their heads. Not saying that in a bad way, it happens. I know we’re SEC and all, but the reality of it is we suck right now. This is the worst team I’ve seen us field in my lifetime. Bert (not a typo) left us with a talent shortage in the areas needed for success with the new system we’re trying to install, and the good players we DO have aren't really meant for this scheme. It’s unlikely we’ll win an SEC game this year, let alone any more for that matter. UNT has tougher challenges than us ahead, from what I’ve seen from your coaching staff I don’t expect there to be an issue with success, but it’s happened before. Next, I’ve seen some shots on here taken at our fans for leaving the game as early as they did. I get defensive when people talk about our fans because, in my completely biased opinion, we have some of the best/nicest fans in all of college sports. I’m not talking about the internet trolls, I’m talking about the actual fans in the seat. There’s always the asshats, but in general I challenge you to go to an athletic event and be treated better anywhere else as a visiting fan. The pics on here of our empty stadium implied that we were just a bunch of butthurt, fair weathered fans abandoning their team. These fans have been through SO much over the last decade, and have stuck it out. We were lambasted by the national media for hiring Petrino. It was so terrible he left his professional team mid-season, never mind that coaches get fired mid-season all the time and it’s ok. We caught so much national grief over that, it was unreal – a hell of a lot more than OSU has gotten for keeping Meyer this year. Then our fans became the laughing stock when Petrino crashed his motorcycle. We fired him, much to the anger of most of our fans, and replaced him with the incompetent John L Smith. 2012 was supposed to be one of our best years ever, maybe even making a run at a title (both Alabama and LSU were home games). Instead, it was one of our worst and we had to sit and watch John L tell us all to “smile”. I could go on and on, but my point is it wasn't just this one game our fans were walking out of, it was a culmination of years of crap being dumped on them. Then, to see it pointed out on here, well it kinda stuck in my craw a little. I mean, in the end it’s about the product on the field. I’ve driven by your stadium many, many Saturdays and seen it pretty empty, now that you've got a good product to sell – you’re talking about a possible sell out. You guys pointing out crowd support is kinda hypocritical if you ask me. Finally, the punt return. I’m sure I’ll get downvoted to oblivion for this but here goes. When it happened, I laughed my ass off. I thought it was funny as hell, and just shook my head at the ineptness of our coaching staff and the give up of our players. Plus, my kids had friends that went to Lake Dallas and know Keegan, so seeing the local kid do good made me proud. However, upon further review… I’ve got mixed emotions about it. At the end of the day, your placing some dependence for the play’s success on the good sportsmanship of the other team. Reading the details on how the play was setup helped convince me of this. The fact the gunners, and all opposing players are engaged so they had to take their eyes off the punt returner, to put doubt it their minds about whether fair catch was called. Choosing a situation where 99 times out of 100 the returner will call for a fair catch to begin with - short punt, deep in their end of the field. Plus, in this day and age, week after week players are coached not to hit a defenseless player, that they’ll be penalized and probably ejected and suspended if they do. So, the punt team, not having been able to see the returner, is supposed to tackle a defenseless player because he hasn’t heard a whistle? I know ‘back in the day’ when I was running down the field on kick coverage if everybody in front of me eased up I assumed I’d missed the fair catch call and eased up as well. I wouldn’t have thought about making contact with the returner. I ask how you would have felt if Keegan really had called for a fair catch in that situation and one of our players had not seen it and took Keegan’s head off, what would you have thought about that player? Would you have called for his ejection? Would you have vilified him as being cheap? Think about it. I still think the play is funny as hell and laugh when it’s shown, and I’m happy UNT is getting the good pub --- but I really don’t think it’s as black and white of a play as it is on first watch. It’s not just about lazy Arkansas players not finishing the play. Those of you that have played the game ask yourself, what would you have done if everybody in front of you stopped. Would you have said, “I didn’t hear a whistle so I’m going to light him up?” Anyway, this was longer than I’d planned and seriously, I’m not trying to offend or downplay UNT’s success. You guys are great, like I’ve been saying for two weeks now! Good luck the rest of the year and I’ll be seeing you at the games!

  38. So much of the argument against this play is focused on player safety. Well, if you tackle like you're supposed to, there will be no targeting, no head to head contact. If the coverage team had pulled its head out of its ass and wrapped him up, this would be a non story. Or, don't assume shit and stand in front of the returner until the play is for sure dead if you want to be a pansy about it. So dumb.

  46. Reading around the internet last night and this morning, I've yet to see a team fan base we've beat over the past two season ever give us an ounce of credibility for having a good team. It's always, "This is the most embarrassing loss in our history and we have the worst team we've ever put on a field and we're going to lose every game because we lost to North Texas." That's ok. Keep ignoring us. Keep dismissing us. Keep looking past us. We'll keep quietly showing up and taking the W's.
