  1. Do yourself a favor and enjoy every moment of this season folks. If you can make it to a game, make it. If you can listen to a podcast, interview or press conference, listen. Live in the moment because it is sweet. If I had told you on the day after national signing day last season that we would get a commit from a 3* kid that had offers from 10 other FBS schools you might have said “jewel of the class.” Well, that kid committed last night: https://247sports.com/Recruitment/DeShawn-Gaddie-110932/RecruitInterests/ Now if I told you he would be among 20 3* recruits, and that our class was ranked #1 in CUSA you might have asked me “how many ranking services did you have to check to cobble together those star ratings?” But it’s true, and the class might actually have looked even better had so many spots not been taken BEFORE we showed how great we can be. If I told you on the day Mason Fine was recruited, “that 5’11 kid is about to own every passing record and will throw deep balls to a LOADED receiving corps” you would have laughed and said I was talking him up based on my green tinted glasses. The best to sling it in our school’s history might just be that 5’11 kid. (Oh, and he and his entire receiving corps have a season to play after this one) If I told you after last season “don’t worry, we’re gonna curb stomp SMU and embarrass Arkansas so bad that 90% of their fans won’t be around for the final whistle” you would ask me to check into drug rehab. But it’s true. If I told you three years ago that we would be breaking ground on an indoor practice facility (and unveiling an Mean Joe Greene statue) right before the 3rd home game of the season you would have peed yourself because of the potential to take off as a program. That we are doing these things DURING a season where we are starting to take off is unreal. These are uncharted waters for this program. When all three of my kids attend North Texas (and they WILL) I will likely tell them one of two stories. Either, 2018 was the season the “sleeping giant” finally woke up, or 2018 was the most magical ride of my Mean Green life. Either way, I will soak this season in. It truly is great to be alive in this moment.

  2. First off, I want to say I’ve enjoyed the last couple of weeks on here discussing the game with everyone. If you don’t mind, I plan on hanging around for a while and enjoying the rest of the season with you guys – it's not like I have much to watch from Fayetteville this year. 🙂 I’ll be at the La Tech game for sure, wouldn't miss hearing the fans appreciation for the team’s performance in person. I had to step back a little after the game and let you have your fun, it’s been a long time coming so I understand your excitement. I’m a hog fan though, so it was a little tough to take and I kept my visits to a minimum. I’m all better now though... mostly. 🙂 There are a few things I’d like to comment on now. First, I hope UNT stays focused and doesn't let too much of this go to their heads. Not saying that in a bad way, it happens. I know we’re SEC and all, but the reality of it is we suck right now. This is the worst team I’ve seen us field in my lifetime. Bert (not a typo) left us with a talent shortage in the areas needed for success with the new system we’re trying to install, and the good players we DO have aren't really meant for this scheme. It’s unlikely we’ll win an SEC game this year, let alone any more for that matter. UNT has tougher challenges than us ahead, from what I’ve seen from your coaching staff I don’t expect there to be an issue with success, but it’s happened before. Next, I’ve seen some shots on here taken at our fans for leaving the game as early as they did. I get defensive when people talk about our fans because, in my completely biased opinion, we have some of the best/nicest fans in all of college sports. I’m not talking about the internet trolls, I’m talking about the actual fans in the seat. There’s always the asshats, but in general I challenge you to go to an athletic event and be treated better anywhere else as a visiting fan. The pics on here of our empty stadium implied that we were just a bunch of butthurt, fair weathered fans abandoning their team. These fans have been through SO much over the last decade, and have stuck it out. We were lambasted by the national media for hiring Petrino. It was so terrible he left his professional team mid-season, never mind that coaches get fired mid-season all the time and it’s ok. We caught so much national grief over that, it was unreal – a hell of a lot more than OSU has gotten for keeping Meyer this year. Then our fans became the laughing stock when Petrino crashed his motorcycle. We fired him, much to the anger of most of our fans, and replaced him with the incompetent John L Smith. 2012 was supposed to be one of our best years ever, maybe even making a run at a title (both Alabama and LSU were home games). Instead, it was one of our worst and we had to sit and watch John L tell us all to “smile”. I could go on and on, but my point is it wasn't just this one game our fans were walking out of, it was a culmination of years of crap being dumped on them. Then, to see it pointed out on here, well it kinda stuck in my craw a little. I mean, in the end it’s about the product on the field. I’ve driven by your stadium many, many Saturdays and seen it pretty empty, now that you've got a good product to sell – you’re talking about a possible sell out. You guys pointing out crowd support is kinda hypocritical if you ask me. Finally, the punt return. I’m sure I’ll get downvoted to oblivion for this but here goes. When it happened, I laughed my ass off. I thought it was funny as hell, and just shook my head at the ineptness of our coaching staff and the give up of our players. Plus, my kids had friends that went to Lake Dallas and know Keegan, so seeing the local kid do good made me proud. However, upon further review… I’ve got mixed emotions about it. At the end of the day, your placing some dependence for the play’s success on the good sportsmanship of the other team. Reading the details on how the play was setup helped convince me of this. The fact the gunners, and all opposing players are engaged so they had to take their eyes off the punt returner, to put doubt it their minds about whether fair catch was called. Choosing a situation where 99 times out of 100 the returner will call for a fair catch to begin with - short punt, deep in their end of the field. Plus, in this day and age, week after week players are coached not to hit a defenseless player, that they’ll be penalized and probably ejected and suspended if they do. So, the punt team, not having been able to see the returner, is supposed to tackle a defenseless player because he hasn’t heard a whistle? I know ‘back in the day’ when I was running down the field on kick coverage if everybody in front of me eased up I assumed I’d missed the fair catch call and eased up as well. I wouldn’t have thought about making contact with the returner. I ask how you would have felt if Keegan really had called for a fair catch in that situation and one of our players had not seen it and took Keegan’s head off, what would you have thought about that player? Would you have called for his ejection? Would you have vilified him as being cheap? Think about it. I still think the play is funny as hell and laugh when it’s shown, and I’m happy UNT is getting the good pub --- but I really don’t think it’s as black and white of a play as it is on first watch. It’s not just about lazy Arkansas players not finishing the play. Those of you that have played the game ask yourself, what would you have done if everybody in front of you stopped. Would you have said, “I didn’t hear a whistle so I’m going to light him up?” Anyway, this was longer than I’d planned and seriously, I’m not trying to offend or downplay UNT’s success. You guys are great, like I’ve been saying for two weeks now! Good luck the rest of the year and I’ll be seeing you at the games!

  3. I appreciate your level-headedness of the past weeks and glad to hear you're going to a game but.... There's not another fan base in the country who I want to hear how rough they have/had it. Not. One. GMG!

  4. .....because I’m trying to finally get down from this cloud and I don’t wanna land on anyone? We’ve had 38 or so hours now to digest what happened Saturday and I’ve thought about what it meant the most to me. I know what it means for our school and program...but what about myself? And every happy thought that keeps coming to my mind reverses back to the look on the faces of our long time suffering members of the Mean Green Nation who were there Saturday...and what they must have been feeling and thinking, and then for those who couldn’t be there as well. We had Mean Green royalty in the house on Saturday including Mean Joe Greene, Byron Gross, Lance White, Keith Chapman, Patrick Cobbs to name a few along with many other lettermen and those around me were just loving every second of it. I looked around and saw the faces of some of our greatest Greenbloods in history. Folks like ParksAndRecRick, Adler, NMGreen, UNT90, VeryGreen, KingwoodGreen, Ted87 and so many others and their friends and families. And again...the looks on their faces was indescribable. Then I started imagining it in my mind what had to of be the glow on the faces of SUMG, PlumMeanGreen, GrayEagle, Harry, DeepGreen, IslandEagle, MoGreen, Scotty Campbell, Kram1, Evan, meanrob, Emmitt, KingDL, and countless others who couldn’t be there Saturday but are part of a special group of long-suffering fans who have been here, traveling, buying in, and supporting in every type of environment imaginable from the miserable heat to the freezing rain..etc no matter what. It was the euphoria on those faces and the look in their eyes and the sound in their voices on the phone afterwards that means the most to me and makes me the happiest and proud to be a part of. Love you all, Ricky Paul

  6. Well, this blew up more than expected. I expected flack about the punt return opinion. It's a good subject for debate. My opinion still stands; however, if we'd of done it to Alabama I'd be loving every replay and re-tweeting it every chance i got. For the rest of the stuff, I’ve tried to come up with a reply that can’t be taken out of context, or be seen as whining or crying, or be accused of pandering… and well, it’s just not possible. So, that being said, I’m only going to say good look the rest of the season. I’ll be pulling for you each week… and I can say that and not be pandering because I’ve lived in the Denton/Argyle area for over 15 years and put six kids through the Denton ISD. So, if you think that’s pandering then… 🤐

  7. Not exactly sure where I was making excuses, I've been blatant for two weeks now how ya'll are better than us. No excuses have been given for that. Not sure how else I can put it. My only point was we're not a good team right now. Excuses for losing usually involve complaints about officiating, or saying we weren't focused and looking past you, or even we just messed up and dropped the ball too much, etc. etc. I've shouted from the hilltops how you're better than us - since when is saying you're better than us making an excuse for a loss??

  9. North Texas received more national publicity last night and today due to that one punt return for the TD(and beating Arkansas) than all the UNT billboards in the Metroplex. Athletics, “The window through which the nation views UNT”.

  21. If you live in Denton, you know Frenchy. He's the over the top landscaper that is the biggest promoter of anything Denton. French is somewhat famous for his support for professional football in Dallas. However, today, he has dedicated one of his famous vans in green flags and declared today and future Mondays as Mean Green Monday. To kick off this project, Frenchy is asking any and all Mean Green fans that are able to come to his "Van of Fame" on Dallas Drive, wear GREEN and be in the latest Frenchy photo promoting Denton and all that implies. The photo will take place at Frenchy's work shop, not his office at 915 Dallas Drive at 6:00pm TODAY. Short notice but some better that none. GO MEAN GREEN

  29. This one is definitely up there for me too. Texas Tech in 97 near and dear to me becaiouse I was on the field and I'll never forget the bus ride home. (We smiled and joked the entire bus ride home. Even with injuries and beat up.) However, this team is special. They aren't just winning. They have been dominant through these first three games. The team and university are different now. I've never been so damned proud of UNT.

  31. Poor, poor SEC fans. "Worst team I've ever seen." I finally saw my first in-person UNT win in my FOURTH season of watching games. I weep for the tragic situation of any SEC team that doesn't go 15-0 every year as they have been so anointed by the football gods of ESPN. I am one who took a poorly thought out, bourbon influenced shot at some random interweb dude on the Arkansas message board and was soundly put in my place by UNT fans who made the trip to Arkansas and overwhelmingly said how well they were treated up there. That punt return brought attention to this game. This is the first time in my life that I've gone to work on Monday and had all the P5 fans in the office come up and tell me how great that game was and they wanted to know who our quarterback was, and the Tech guy said that Littrell is absolutely #1 on their coaching wish list. I've never experienced anything like that, and I gotta admit -- it felt damn good.

  35. Like you Pokey. I can really sympathize with U of A, as we have gone through about 30 years of athletic department/administration incompetence that has resulted in our having to literally crawl back to some respectability. Good luck the rest of the year.

  37. Agree with most of your post and please stick around and come to as many games as you can! @Moobs is right about how it's hard to get much sympathy from us regarding mediocrity but totally get your point...and I will say we were treated beautifully in Fayetteville. Everyone was fantastic both before and after the game. Absolutely beautiful town. Regarding the punt return, the right play isn't to "light him up" but to breakdown in front of him if you didn't hear the whistle in that situation...much like an infielder keeping a glove on the runner who just stole a base...it's not a cheap play, it's a heady play....and a DAMN BRAVE ONE. I imagine most of us will be rooting for the Hogs to right the ship. It's hard to run an offense with personnel built for the exact opposite end of the offensive spectrum...or with true Freshmen. Best of luck this year!

  41. This is just incredible. Everyone here can remember how maddening 3rd downs were last year (heck, save 2013, for the past decade+). As amazing as Fine and the offense has been... What this defense is doing so far this year is beyond comprehension. They're all playing out of their minds. Nate is looking like the cover corner we knew he could be. Kemon is just a lock-down guy... you're not throwing on him. Khari, EJ & Brandon are flying to the ball & making sure tackles. Rod is collapsing pockets like crazy. ...and Jamie King! ...wreaking havoc on the edge. So far, this defense is really pushing 2013's & 2003's defenses, in my mind, as my favorite defense.

  42. Was very cool to see North Texas pop up on the Sunday Night Football Halftime show. Mike Tirico identified Keegan Brewer by name, the crew briefly talked about the play and most importantly, they mentioned how North Texas took down Arkansas 44-17. 44. Just less than 3 years ago (Oct 10, 2015), a day that will live in UNT infamy, our Mean Green were taken to the woodshed by Portland State. McCarney was officially done. Our fan base was fractured, and some on this board were fed up and had enough. UNT90 and some others went to an extreme measure to motivate change within the university. That change has lead us to where we are now. A respectable FBS program, with quality leadership. Our fundamental philosophy of how our athletic programs should be ran has changed. North Texas no longer seeks out body bag games, but works for quality home and home match ups. High caliber recruits are not an afterthought anymore, as we challenge quality FBS programs for these commits, and win our share of these battles. And, we now highlight our history, and are honoring our legends, like the Joe Greene statue soon to be installed. In short, we are now a program charting our own destiny. For perhaps the first time in forever, our future is in our hands. It is time for the Mean Green Nation to rise and claim all of North Texas. Dallas is not the property of SMU, despite the efforts of the DMN. And, Fort Worth does not belong to TCU either. Those cities are just a part of North Texas. Claim them. Not just on Mean Green Monday, but everyday. Go Mean Green!!!
