  1. In my twenty-five years of UNT fandom this might be the most attack-oriented offense we have ever had. The Dodge years could move the ball but we never had the quarterback/WRs combo that we have now. During that time, most of our game plans have revolved around playing the game close to the vest, letting the defense keep us in the game while taking well timed shots here and there. For the most part, especially in OOC games, it's never worked. I'm all for a balanced attack, especially over the long haul of the season but.... We should go right at SMU. We have an amazing QB and WRs. Use them soon and often. Mason makes a mistake? So be it, go right back at them. We should go into this game expecting to score fifty points. If we give up 35, who cares. I would say our WRs are so good we could keep an extra blocker to help protect and they could still get open. With this team, which I no longer consider young, we should go right at them. Use our strengths.

  5. That sure spells power 6. Noone can tell me that SMU, Tulane and Tulsa - tiny private schools - are really doing much for the AAC. Also I cannot stop thinking that if these privates want to play on the same field with the public schools, in order for that playing field to be level, they ought to have the same obligation to report on their athletics finances as the public schools.

  7. @PlummMeanGreen would be a better source for this but I'll try. As I recall, Jerry Jones had a meeting with then Mayor Laura Miller The topic was how much money the City of Dallas would pay to build the new stadium at Fair Park. Jerry Jones said he had an offer for a "zillion" dollars from Arlington. Mayor Laura Miller thought he was bluffing and said something like, "If you can get that deal you should go get it." He wasn't and he did and that was the beginning of the end of the Cotton Bowl and the area around Fair Park for that matter. The mayor had a chance to completely rebuild that part of downtown Dallas and got out bluffed. Too bad.

  8. Not crazy about the idea of 4 smaller screens instead of the one large one we have now... Let's be honest, I hate it. Right now everyone is dialed in on the big screen and it creates excitement. I feel like 4 smaller screens just dials back the hype during the games.

  11. Shut down the cotton bowl, give the HOD Bowl to Jerry Jones. Or.......... The HOD Bowl simply folds tent. When it does, re-create the Bluebonnet Bowl and have it played in Austin at UTs stadium. It could easily become a major bowl game.

  15. Wait Dallas has to pay ESPN $300K? Call me naive, but from a financial standpoint, do they even make their money back? What does Dallas have to gain for a mediocre slot on a mediocre day at a mediocre venue? If HOD could garner a better matchup then it would make sense.

  20. As much as I'd like to see a bowl in Denton, I don't think it will happen because people in Denton don't turn out for football. There's also a new bowl game on the other side of the lake that rolls out the red carpet for anything sports related. I seriously doubt it's legal to buy your way into a bowl the way you mentioned. Even if we could I'd also hate to see UNT waste money on ridiculous Dallas politics that does very little for UNT. I also wouldn't want us in a bowl game we don't deserve to be in.

  21. C-USA never should have sold this bowl to ESPN. If legal, North Texas should subsidize the $300K for Dallas to host the HOD for the next two seasons, provided we are the first option when bowl eligible. I would hope the city of Denton partnered would partner with North Texas and consider negotiating with ESPN to have the game moved to Apogee after the current deal with the Cotton Bowl expires. Boise had a pretty good deal with the Potato bowl for a number of years, and it allowed Boise to grow their program.

  22. If they'd ever gotten the chance to match North Texas up against a Big 10 (Thanks Sandusky and Penn St!) or a Big 12 opponent, they wouldn't be having this discussion as there'd be 60,000-70,000 people in the stands with the right match-up.

  25. On that list you’ve got two seniors who will open up starting spots after this year, three walkons who have proven very little at the division 1 level, and two true freshman who held I think just one other FBS offer between the two of them (Nixon and Hunt). I’m not saying that’s a bad group, but at the FBS level that’s about as favorable a situation as you’re going to get if you’re in Fulp’s shoes. Davis and the commits are solid, but if you’re scared about those younger guys taking your spot while older guys above you are opening up spots, then going JUCO is not going to solve your playing time problem.

  26. I will check that out to see if Wilson plays and how he does. All the San Francisco reporters keep saying that he will be cut at the end of preseason. They say he has a chance to make the practice squad, but not a good one. I hope he can prove them all wrong.

  30. Good read here as the team looks ahead to next week's trip. https://meangreensports.com/news/2018/8/8/mens-basketball-playing-international.aspx As the North Texas men's basketball team is less than a week away from its trip to Italy, the Mean Green have been scrimmaging daily with unfamiliar rules and even a different basketball. While in Italy, UNT will play at least three exhibitions against international competition and use International Basketball Federation (FIBA) rules and a FIBA basketball. Hadn't really considered the on-court impact of the team playing internationally under FIBA rules but as is highlighted by the article, it's going to be incredibly valuable to have the squad learn how to: Play at a faster pace (8 sec backcourt violation / 24 sec shot clock) Value added floor spacing (deeper 3pt line) Defend with quickness on the perimeter without fouling (officiated in a way to emphasis skill over physicality) Additionally, the team should benefit through a unique necessity to develop their on-court communication as they take on the challenge of making these adjustments. What a great opportunity - both on and off the court

  31. I don't see any reason to regale state vs private schools' financing based on Tulsa's problems. No, they can't depend on a huge student fee base to fund their program like NT. However the much bigger issue is what the athletic arms races is doing to all programs but the very top P5's. Multi-million dollar coaches salaries, stipends for football players, indoor practice facilities, fancy ridiculous dressing rooms, a different uniform for every game. hotel stays for home games; are just a few examples of things that teams are now almost forced to do to try to keep up. In the long run, these expenditures just make play less completive. These expenditures just grow the gap between the few that actually generate money and everyone else.

  32. There have been discussions as about moving the state fair and Texas/OU has already discussed moving to AT&T after the current contract. Who wants to take their family down to the ghetto for a fair or game? Not me. It sucks. That part of Dallas is terrible. Sad truth.

  33. I commend Tulsa's AD for reducing his own pay for three straight years. Many have been promoting and predicting reorganizing conferences to reduce travel costs. I really don't know how much that would save but it seems even a minimal savings could be a big benefit.

  35. Austin is a fast growing market with a desire to hold marque events. It’s only a 2nd tier event because Dallas can’t front the money to make it better. The venue doesn’t create any buzz anymore.

  41. What I saw in the article is that North Texas isn't getting as much as we should in big OOC road games. Michigan State is paying Tulsa $1.2mil Ohio State is paying Tulsa $1.1mil Ole Miss is paying Tulsa $1.45mil Oklahoma State is paying $650,000 for a 2 hour bus ride. (I wouldn't walk across the street for $650,000.) I hope the Wren will end money games but if not, I hope we can get market rates. GO MEAN GREEN
