  1. Harry Minium, ODU's beat writer who is often quoted on this website, has announced his retirement from the Virginian Pilot after 39 years. Let's hope his replacement is as diligent. https://pilotonline.com/sports/columnist/harry-minium/article_4045fd22-36a3-11e8-af8d-3772084e590f.html?__vfz=medium%3Dsharebar

  3. I remember how long the summer seemed before I got into FC Dallas. I was the most anti soccer person alive and scoffed at the World Cup. Then came traveling the globe and watching hoards of Manchester United fans everywhere I went. No matter what country what hour here came the red storm in force. I watched with curiosity then decided to go to an FCD game. One trip to the beer garden, one $20 ticket in that crazy section live and I was a season ticket holder the next day. No looking back. In hindsight I see a lot of similarities in my MG fandom over the past 32 years and loving FC Dallas soccer. Nobody really gets why I love them so much and it’s hard to describe. It’s 3 things really: 1. The energy in the stands at a game in the beer garden. The drums, chants, flags, war paint and streamers. It’s like a live soap opera with this wild cast of characters. 2. The intimacy of the sport - I walk up buy a ticket and sit 2 rows behind the net any day any week. Live action so close. You really get to know the players and they thank us as they walk off the field. 3. Small rabid fan base you really get to know. Away Watching parties at peticolas brewery, backyard on bell...every week I’m touching the sport with the same crazies. It really is like Mean Green Family there in Toyota stadium on a Saturday night. Now I’m traveling to away games in Houston. Who am I? I’ll meet any diehard green there in the beer 🍻 garden and you will feel the link and connection. So come on you Boys in Red and Go Mean Green!!!!!

  5. I’m a fan of the website. Good write up, I feel like the SMU game is going to be a huge measuring stick for the rest of the season. -GMG! https://swcroundup.com/news/2018/6/28/season-preview-north-texas

  6. They show us with a W over UTSA in our preview. In the UTSA preview they show the game as a pick-em. Very diplomatic.

  9. I don't remember it that way,but I am 75. The defense was "Mean Green", but we were "Eagles" until R.V. re badged us. His concern was that there were too many regional high schools nicknamed "Eagles", and he wanted to differentiate us from them. I personal have never liked "Mean Green" and prefer "Eagles", but that's just me.

  10. Most Arkansas fans would tell you, the Little Rock fans are completely different than the Northwest Arkansas fans. Probably more expensive though. I would rather stay in Bentonville/Rogers as far as stuff to do and a nicer area, but if you’re just going to the game and aren’t interested in anything else I would just stay in Fort Smith and save an extra 45-minute round trip coming from the south.

  11. Not a fan of fake Christians. You know, those that are outwardly Christian because they think they can make it work to their advantage by claiming to be Christian when their actions in private are anything but Christian (e.g. racist actions, cover up rape, etc.)

  12. Is it any surprise that a slime ball like McCaw was able to find another gig at another private university that hides behind secrecy? Allowing these universities to operate without transparency is a recipe for disaster as has been proven over and over and over again. IMO, the only way that public universities should be allowed to associate with private universities in things like sports (but not just sports) is if the private schools agree to subject themselves to the same rules of transparency that apply to the public schools.

  17. Agree. And it will be interesting to see see how Mike Sherman, coaching Montreal and June Jones, coaching Hamilton and Johnny Manziel do this year. Of course their version of football sort of misses out on half the game...that of the run game. But what I like about the CFL is they have a small salary cap, about $5.2 million per team. Coaches make about $500K, and the average players are making around $88K not including the QB's So if a player plays in the CFL he's in it for the love of the game. Plus they stand at attention and respectfully recognize their national anthem. Rick

  19. FROM LAST YEAR: “North Texas will begin the one-month countdown to the start of football season with Mean Green Mania on Wednesday, Aug. 2, when fans can pick up their 2017 tickets and get an early look at the team. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and food and drink will be available throughout. Fans will be able to pick up their season tickets, join the Mean Green Club, and have the chance to upgrade or purchase new season tickets. Any fan picking up tickets or buying new season tickets will receive an 2017 Light the Tower gameday t-shirt. The event will take place at the Apogee Stadium ticket office and concourse near Gate 2. Festivities get underway at 8 a.m. when juice, coffee, muffins and Danish will be served. At 10 a.m., the cuisine will switch to nachos, popcorn, hot dogs and Beth Marie's ice cream along with limited samples of the new brisket sandwiches that will be available at Apogee's concessions stands this season. At 9 a.m., the football team will hold a practice in Apogee for fans to watch, and at noon head coach Seth Littrell, football student-athletes and Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and director of athletics Wren Baker will speak to fans. 20. I know some of the old timers bristle a bit at Mean Green, but I can tell you this was one thing RV got 100 percent right. I understand the argument that Eagles ties all alumni together, but nationally Mean Green is known - if nothing else just because it is so unique. I live and travel all around the world and college football fans don’t know anything about UNT other than Mean Green. But they know that at least. It worked!

  26. Things may have changed, but LAST YEAR we had the option of picking up in Denton. After a certain date, they were to be mailed. If it is possible for you, I recommend the personal pickup. First, the ticket packages will probably not be ready to be released by any method until (I'm guessing here) mid-August. Second, I think I recall a nice little "release party" where you could also pick up a yard sign, posters, etc. Disclaimer: I have NO inside info about what this year's plans are; haven't even heard any hot rumors.

  27. First off kudos for reading the BBC as an unbiased news source. The more people that move away from Fox and MSNBC the faster we can heal what divides us. Second I read that article and did not see what you mentioned. Did I skip over it?

  28. Quick question.. I got an awesome Father"s Day gift this year, a season ticket. This will be my first time having season tickets. My wife could not tell me more in how I am to receive the tickets. Do I need to go to Denton? When I have called the ticket office I never get an answer. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Go Mean Green!

  30. Now, I don't particularly like Baylor and all of this sure sounds condemning... ...but I do have to wonder what McCaws agenda here is. After all he WAS the presiding AD when all of this happened, and I can't remember him getting out in front of this or resigning when he found out any of it. Is he trying to fool the rest of us into thinking it was all the regents etc and he couldn't do anything about it?

  31. I'm glad we are post racial. Imagine if we weren't... we'd still have Christian universities with a dead black basketball player being impugned as a drug dealer likely deserving their end.

  32. Baylor will still get their due punishment in the years coming. No other power conference will touch them because of their Baptist connections, as well as the bad PR that comes from the basketball and football incidents over the last 15 years or so. The Pac-12 won't take them because of this. The Big Ten and SEC don't need them for obvious reasons. And the ACC already has plenty of regional private schools with much less baggage out there. They will be SMU and Rice in due time. Looking back always, bitching about getting left behind, and watching the Power League TV money dry up. It will be glorious to watch.

  34. Not sure what military they will be serving in, but it most certainly wasn't the same one I did. You get into the 100K range once you attain Lt. Col (05) at the 20 year served mark. Now, there are incentives pending job status, but those incentives are boosted for very specific roles such as doctors and certain types of aircraft pilots. A generic supply/intel/transportation/ordinance/infantry etc. officer, like many of these cats become, won't flirt with 100K unless/until they advance up the ranks AND serve years of time. And, again, it takes sometimes easily a decade to get to 0-3, Captain. And a captain in the military caps out at 80K after 14 years served and never changes up to and through 40 years in that same rate. There is nothing wrong with going the academy route, but let's not push false information into naive ears. Maybe, juuuuust maybe, he Mr. Irons chose this route because he wants to serve country and not self? And not chase the imaginary money you're referring to?

  35. Agreed. This seems like a small, simple step yet one we haven't taken for years. These little things on the field, off the field, all over the dept are adding up and building momentum. Really fun to watch.

    1 point
  37. If that were true, then I guess, sort of... https://www.militaryrates.com/military-pay-charts-o1_o5_2018 And it typically takes 6-10 years to attain captain/0-3 pending MOS/NEC and cutoffs. But I won't condemn anyone ever going the academy route.

  38. They are a recent purchase of Learfield. From what I can tell, they’ve been a monster in the collegiate ticket world for a while though (OU, UT, Texas Tech, Mizzou, Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, just to name a few of their clients). Thought this His was interesting too: “Under terms of the deal, Ticketmaster must license its ticketing software to Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) to help it become a viable competitor instead of a customer of Ticketmaster. In addition, Ticketmaster must sell its Paciolan primary ticketing division to Comcast-Spectacor, which currently controls much of Philadelphia’s sports, venue and ticketing ventures.” LINK

  40. History literally means nothing in this context. I mean no disrespect but I absolutely never have understood the "well, we didn't do good last time, so that means we won't do good this time." insecurity. Why? There's no rules that we have to be bad in San Antonio. We lost by 7 in 2014 and 14 in 2016. Neither game was unwinnable. 0-2 is not any reason to consider beating them at their place to be "unrealistic", especially in college football where players and coaches change in the blink of an eye. Both teams are completely overhauled from where they were in 2016. I understand the hesitance, but it's not like the Alamodome is some extreme home field advantage. Roadkill on the horizon.

  42. The Ballpark is gorgeous. It is one of my favorite and tearing it down so they can fleece taxpayers again is a disgrace. Minute Maid just does it’s job very well. All seats are tight to the field and big open concourses make it a good game day experience. I just wish they still allowed them to open the roof mid game. Everyone loved watching it open after the sun went down.

  43. Been monitoring North Texas chat rooms for a long long time. I dont post much anymore yet this deserves one. Always respected Johnny Jones. Anyhow, a few months back just before the end of the BBall season I was at a restaurant in Santa Clara. Johnny and the Nevada came through the door. As I walked by him I stopped to say hello. He stopped and spoke to me for at least 10 minutes .. asking me my name, when I was at North Texas, etc. Went out of his way to say hello and talk. Great guy and I wish him all the best. We all have jobs. But sometimes you meet somebody who respects the job and the relationships ... something we don't see enough. Johnny is always calm, collected and respectful ... and he put NT on the map for a while :)

  47. Nah, you do it to yourself,...just like ScreamingEagle66 always does, stretching one thing from another based on leftist emotion instead of facts and logic. The Trump travel ban doesn't ban Muslims or Buddhist. It upholds and enforces visa application requirements from Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Iran and Yemen in an attempt to keep our country safer.
