  1. I did a visual count and came up with about 87 in attendance minus the coaches and UNT employees. I thought is was a good event. I was able to personally talk to 4 coaches (Littrell, McCasland, Hedlund, and Palileo) as well as Wren Baker. All were down to earth and willing to take time with each group that they visited. Summary of my personal conversations: AD Baker - Talked about being home. Loving the town he lives in and being close to family. Coach Littrell went further to say that not only does he love his job he loves being close to his family. We talked about his hometown and how much he loved being close enough that his kid can have a relationship with their grandparents instead of only seeing them 2-3 times a year. He said "I hope y'all keep me!" I replied "I think we are more concerned about you getting lured away." He squared up to me looked me in the eye and said "anyone who thinks I would leave does not know me very well!" Coach McCasland - talked about the support from the President down to ensure he had what he needed to be successful. He really enjoyed the atmosphere of the Super Pit at the end of the season and through the CBI. Really a nice person who is excited about his team next year. Coach Hedlund - Can not wait for the soccer and track complex to start. Talked about having a home since he has played on 7 different fields in his 25 years at North Texas. He is happy with winning the C-USA but is ready to make a run in the NCAA and is setting that expectation with his players. Coach Palileo - is happy Volleyball won the C-USA so Coach Hedlund will stop busting his chops about not having a championship. Is looking forward to next season and is ready to repeat. I asked each one the same group of questions: "Do you have everything you need to be successful?" - everyone of them said YES emphatically. They said that from the board, president, and AD that they have amazing support and love the direction the university as a whole is going. "Are you still enjoying what you do?" - All said yes! "What do you need from us?" - All said butts in seats in one way shape or form, that it makes a big impact on the team and more importantly recruiting. Overall I was very impressed with the AD Baker and all of the coaches (I was not able to get to talk to the track coach who was there as well). My wife and daughter went as well and my 17 year old daughter (who wants to be an athletic trainer) was even invited up to visit by Coach Littrell and Coach McCasland and said that they would talk to the head of Sports Medicine to ensure that she was able to watch a practice during her visit. All of the coaches talked directly to her and made her feel like she was being recruited by them. At the end of the event she looked at me and said, with the way things are going at UNT why would I go anywhere else? I asked her what she meant and she quoted the fact that this past year was the best athletic year since 1975 as a whole for the university (something AD Baker said earlier in the event). New fields, IPF, and a commitment to the student athletes. She said that it felt like she would be getting in on the start of something great and that she could be proud of going forward. I liked it and thought is was a successful event and even if no one else liked the event, I think they made a decision for at least one future student last night!

  2. I'm with you. I'm middle of the road politically probably leaning left. Certainly in the minority in Texas. But I despise the ole hire a female to coach females stuff. I have 3 daughters. Two played sports and they never cared about the gender of their coach. Never came up one time. What I want is the best coach available who will teach kids about sports and life at my alma mater. If there's a tie, hire a female. Otherwise hire the best coach.

  4. With the CBI success and now a trip to Italy for games, I hope this means Coach MacCasland will try and bring in some good teams to play at the Pit this year. I understand playing tough OOC games on the road with a young inexperienced team last year and cream puffs at home but we need to build on the excitement and bring in teams that will draw the casual fans. Hope some dates will start leaking out this summer. We have UTA at home and they need a beat down!!

  5. I think it is more of starting a tradition for those purchasing class rings. Many colleges and universities do such things as “tradition”. As has been stated, this is an area of campus that holds great significance to many of our students. So, the location makes sense. As many of you already know, our youngest son graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. When they get their rings, they did them in a bowl of water containing water from the Seven Seas and Oceans that has been gatherd and delivered to the Academy for the purpose. Many here ask for “traditions”. Perhaps this is the start of a good one for UNT. The ring ceremony was held outdoors as well for the first time. Talk about traditions...this ring ceremony thing has really grown in recent years.

  8. We differ here. With OU assistants making triple what our previous HC made, it would have taken drastic resources to even have a chance at an OU assistant. And while I want us to be good in everything, spending that kind of money on one non-revenue sport doesn't make good business sense to me. I understand a differing opinion, but that's mine understanding we may be trying to keep a football coach in December getting offers from Texas Tech and Kansas and we have limited resources.

  11. I'm aware of the positive and negative aspects of such a plan, but I prefer to let others show off while we maintain frequent, secure communications with our intended targets. At the appropriate time, we can swoop down and get them on the dotted line.

  12. New redshirt rule will help scenarios where a kid has to come in and play at the end of the season when the starter gets hurt. It will also allow coaches to play freshmen in the bowl game without burning a year of eligibility (which has been something coaches have wanted for a long time). This should push a lot more kids to a redshirt year.

  16. "Boom! And not only did UNT (9-5) and UAB (8-5) finish 1st and 2nd in the West (over USM and LA Tech), but both also beat USM and LA Tech, and beat us as well. Anyone who says we shouldn't be as worried about UNT and UAB as we should about USM and LA Tech needs to take another look at what's happened over the last 2 years with the new coaches at UNT and UAB. And as I noted on another thread months ago, 9 of UNT's 14 games last year were against bowl teams, making their 9-5 record look even better." (Volkmar)

  20. I thought that too. The SMU fan base simply isn’t there, across all sports. North Texas has a great opportunity to leap ahead. The amount of alumni and hopefully continued winning will put North Texas in a great position. These firms are going to be looking for content and have the money to do so. Thursday night football is going to be streamed on Amazon and Hulu streamed the NBA Finals. It’s a very exciting and interesting time.

  21. As of today, 247 has North Texas ranked 78th overall and 3rd in conference for 2019 recruiting. It's way too early to know how things will shape up in the end, but it looks like the early indicators suggest improvement.

  22. You did miss it! According to Wren and John Hedlund, at the Coaches Caravan, the current field is not regulation width, and prevents NT from hosting playoff games. The new facility will be regulation width. The master plan that's been posted here shows a new softball field eventually being built in the main (former golf course) area, and the west side of Bonnie Brae becoming a parking/tailgating area.

  25. What is scary is when a guy completes his degree and wants to grad transfer and the coach can block him from getting a scholarship at his new school. Mike Gundy had a list of 40 schools that a grad transfer couldn't go to. I can understand blocking an intra-conference transfer or a non-conference you are scheduled to play. Can't remember where it was but there was a school in the Northeast that wouldn't give a guy a release to get a scholarship at any Division I. The coach can take a scholarship away if he needs to make roster space but players didn't have the ability to transfer without being blessed.

  26. Everyone can play 12. At least 60% of schools will play 13 games. At least 15% will play 14. Going to 4 makes sense. The old rule was 3 and came from when 11 was the cap and around 36% played 12 games and less than 6% played 13 It gets the ratio closer to what it was when the old rule was adopted. As to enforcement. After every game or match, the schools send a participation report to the NCAA. Off the top of my head I can only think of two cases of bad participation reports. One was Tulsa claiming they sent more female track participants to meets than they actually had. Since Tulsa was at the minimum number of sports for FBS the NCAA in its sanction report said that they could have reclassified Tulsa football FCS or even drop them to Division II. Instead because they failed to meet the sport sponsorship requirement for that year they declared them ineligible for post-season in all sports. The other case was from the NAIA when someone noticed that scrubs who rarely got into games at home suddenly became really good players during road games for Arkansas-Pine Bluff. They were actually using players out of eligibility on the road and claiming they were the scrub players. Some of the older folks may remember when Dallas Carter had the big crime spree by players that a college coach asked the judge for leniency and promised that he'd keep them on the straight and narrow got chewed out in open court by the judge and cited his attitude as part of the reason the players thought they could do anything without any repercussions. That was UAPB's Archie "Gunslinger" Cooley. UAPB got a two year death penalty in football. Normally both schools in any game is tracking participation so if UTSA played Joe Freshman and didn't report it when they play UNT, someone would see the discrepancy.

  27. Let's see how these classes end up. Yes, smuT is getting a bunch of commits right now, but many are lower rated 3 star or not even rated. Well, Roberson is now rated a 2 star .7798. There is a lot of time and an entire season yet to be completed prior to signing day. When they are standing there in a full Apogee watching their ponies get taken to the woodshed only to go home to an empty Ford, they will reconsider.

  33. again..2 is not enough to establish pattern, but, his 2 hires are both young guys that have proven they can win at lower levels and again at the D1 level in the short term. Not a bad strategy for a school at our level.

  37. Last season's progression by UTSA has always made me laugh. From Kirk Herbstreit saying they could go 12-0 after week 2, to an absolutely devastating loss against yours truly. To being the only 6-win team to miss out on bowl season! Such a satisfying feeling. *See gif below for instant smiles*

  38. With the number of alumni that might attend (or we envision eventually attending) on game-days this does seen that the space allotted for the pavilion is still a bit small. I've been there numerous times in the past and the existing building/structure was packed. Granted it needed to be larger to begin with, but the design provided in the brochure/PDF seems that it will still lack the space needed to accommodate our alumni fan base on game-days. DESIGN for reference: https://one.unt.edu/file/TOP-AlumniPavilionExpansion.pdf

  42. I agree with what Silver said above. We don't need a drastic improvement in defense. Generally the getting burned deep is a positioning problem: i.e. mental. That can be fixed with experience in a system. (A system by the way that was in year 1 last year if I remember correctly) But yes we need to improve. My argument is more consistency on offense will help our defense. In the 4 games you're talking about, our big losses, our offense was just as big a problem as our defense. Not enough points and too many turnovers: vs SMU - We scored 10 pts in the 1st half (shutout in the 2nd qtr) and only had 17 pts through 3 qtrs. Plus we had 2 INTs vs FAU (1) - We scored 7 pts in the 1st half (shutout in the 1st qtr) Plus we had 2 INTs vs FAU (2) - We got SHUT OUT in the 1st half. (That can't be understated....this offense went into the lockeroom at halftime of the Conference Championship with a big goose egg on the board). Plus we had 2 INTS vs Troy - Better...we scored 20 pts in the first half but had 5 turnovers in that game. And in the 3rd quarter we lost the game. We only had 3 points while Troy scored 3 TDs on one long drive but also 2 drives of 27 yards, and 13 yards We are not going to have 2002 or 2013 UNT D. But our offense should be powerful enough to constantly put pressure on the other team and I would expect that to happen with these players coming back in their 3rd year in the system. As good as the offense was....there is still a lot of room for improvement. Namely finishing drives and reducing turnovers.

  43. You don't get burned deep as often as our defense did unless you have poor DB coverage or your DL is not chasing the QB around. On many occasions we had pretty good pressure from the outside, but not up the middle. But a good amount of those burnings had to do with poor DB coverage too. Get one aspect of that defense cured and we're 10-2 for sure. Get them both corrected (mostly) and we could be seeing a 12-0 season.

  44. Defense suspect. I hope I am wrong, but where do you see major improvements in defense that gave up about 7 touchdowns per game [I don't remember exact number ]? Not talking about Iowa, but SMU,FAU,Troy?

  46. My idea for the SMU game. Let them run out with their little pony and then we have Justify lead us out! Edit for the confused person: Justify, the horse that just won the Triple Crown leading the Belmont wire to wire, is owned by a UNT alumnus and her husband. They are both big supporters of North Texas. smuT has my Lil' Pony and we have Justify.

  47. The FAU program will fall apart once Kiffin gets them to beat someone that matters and then leaves for a Power 5 job again. Then they will get pounded for violations. Its how the NCAA controls these programs--heck, even some power teams (i.e., Ole Miss, Baylor) beat the wrong teams and it becomes clear that their cheating needs investigating, all while Auburn, Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, etc..can keep taking advantage of basically the same violations that their lower brethren cannot do. Both of those teams mentioned above, Baylor and Ole Miss, committed egregious violations and deserved to be punished severely. Its just incredibly sad that it took beating Alabama and Texas to get the media to investigate them. Otherwise, people are still getting assaulted in Waco under the Briles' regime and all kinds of hookers and blow are still showing up in Oxford, MS under Freeze. But I always go back to how Baylor's issues came to light--it wasn't the Waco papers or TV stations, it wasn't their own faculty turning them in...it was only when Texas Monthly showed up to town after Baylor won the conference again. Similar to when SMU finally got busted, if you are under the thumb of UT in their conference, their media will find all the warts. They always have and they always will. And I suspect that it would be the same for FAU if they beat Florida, FSU, or Miami in that state.
