  1. And I'm sure this is marks the end of people making jokes about Vito and parking passes on gomeangreen.com.

  3. Hello everyone! I am not sure if this is a good place to ask these questions, but if you can answer them, please answer. I am a high school student from New York who recently became a Mean Green fan. I would like to become a teacher in the Metroplex, and I think UNT may be my best option. UT Dallas doesn't seem as active as Denton and they don't have a football team, and SMU and TCU are way too expensive. In case you were wondering, I also did look at SUNY schools, but I do not want to have to go to 6 years of school, which the state of NY requires. Plus I think that a composite science certification from UNT will be better for job searching here in Texas. Anyways, here are my questions: 1. How are the on campus dorms? They seem nice, and I would like to at least live my freshman year on campus, if accepted. It doesn't seem UNT is a commuter school either, because a decent percentage of students do live on campus and Denton is a fun town. 2. How is on campus food? I would definately have to get the unlimited 7 day meal plan with Flex bucks if I attend here. 3. How are the education and science programs here in your opinion? 4. I did not see UNT on the list of colleges where students could get a discounted DART pass. I would definately like to be able to take DCTA and DART into Downtown Dallas. Does anyone know if the pass is discounted? Thanks for the help!

  5. Anyone looking at UT's locker room not think this is all getting totally out of hand?

  6. 1. I stayed at Mozart and my RA from there is now the Hall Director at the newest dorm, Rawlins Hall. I thought Mozart was nice, but Rawlins is out of this world. I'll hit you with the real-real too, though. There were rooms in some halls that weren't up to code. For instance, they had to remove counter-top stoves from Santa Fe rooms because there weren't adequate safety features. It's true that today's dorms are way nicer than in the old days, so UNT is having to do a lot of catch-up to get up to snuff, but if you get in early enough and get a hall like Rawlins then you'll love it. 2. The meal plan rocks if you eat in the dorms twice a day or so. Make it a thing to try the various cafeterias with your friends (UNT has 5 or 6, so there is tons of variety). Enjoy the hell outta Kerr's late night cafeteria for...whatever reason you're there late at night. 3. Literally all of my friends who got their teaching degree/cert from UNT are employed in ISDs they love. When you're a teacher, I'm not sure you can ask for much more than that. Science is hit-or-miss, from my experience/knowledge. If you want to be a teacher, though, then I think you'll be fine. P.S. definitely 4. IDK how much time you've spent in DFW, but public transportation around here sucks a big one compared to NY, DC, etc. It's getting better, particularly in Dallas, but I would be careful not to overestimate the value of a public transportation pass around here. Make friends with someone who has a car and their parent's credit card. Other than that, I hope you come to North Texas and love it! You get out of the college experience what you put into it. Hopefully we'll be putting a football (and other sports) product on the field that you'll enjoy watching. We look forward to having you and Go Mean Green!

  9. Combs was injured at the end of his sophomore year, and never was allowed to recover. Not sure that makes him injury prone. He was also easily the best player that Benford recruited and IMO without the injury and the transfer; could have been the best NT player since Chris Davis. Just speculation at this point, but don't undersell how good Combs was.

  12. Way too young. I am not too familiar with the situation & didn't know Willie personally but anyone who did, has spoken very highly of the man he was. Many former players have reached out to pay tribute to Willie, but looks as if he has passed due to cancer. Some things just don't make sense, let's keep the Hubbard family in our thoughts & prayers.

  14. I beg to differ. Our administration faced with new state regulations requiring us slash how much we received in school revenue moved us to I-A at the start of the 1990's BUT did not increase funding for football at all. From 1990 to 1999 at no time did AState award 85 football scholarships and at points we were below the I-AA/FCS limit of 63. We dumped a home game to be played in Little Rock vs. Wyoming in 1995. We sold a home a game vs Colorado State back to Colorado State. We sold a home game vs Texas Tech back to Texas Tech turning those two home games into road games. We had an AD sign a (then) fat contract with Oklahoma but he had neglected to enter on his calendar that he had also signed a contract to play Mizzou that same day. Most of the profit from the OU contract was spent to pay the buyout to Mizzou. The only winning season 1990-2004 was 1995 and featured THREE FCS opponents. The 1999 team if they had been able to score a TD on one of two trips inside the Utah State 30 and if USU doesn't give up an 80 yard busted play TD to Boise we could have been the trend-setters going bowling at 5-6. A friend jokingly called the NCAA rule change requiring five countable home games the "save us from ourself rule". The requirement that we had to actually award all of our scholarships, changed the program. AState is 91-82 since the NCAA FORCED US to award all of our football scholarships, we were 38-106 before. From 1991 to 2002 we lost 8 or more eight times. We hired an academic director that the commissioner told us we should avoid. 31 players were certified ineligible improperly. They were eligible but the paperwork was done wrong and had to vacate ten wins. We've been in football hell. After the 1987 season we had the 1995 padded winning season but did not post more wins than losses again until 2011. We had a three exactly .500 seasons (2005, 2006, 2008). We had TWENTY-THREE mostly miserable years and 17 of total ineptitude.

  15. Don't ever let facts ruin a self-serving argument. UNT spent $31 million on athletics. Of that $21 million came from the school or fees. You actually generated from athletic operations $11 million. AState spent $29 million. Of that $14 million came from the school or fees and AState generated $15 million. Unlike UNT, we have very few opportunities to hop on a bus and go much of anywhere. We are 300 miles from the nearest football playing member of Sun Belt or CUSA.

  20. The main returnees as things stand are sophomore guards Ryan Woolridge and AJ Lawson (may be more of a small forward now). They combined for, I believe, 3 straight CUSA freshman of the week awards. We also get Power forward Shane Temara back, who started once Combs was out for the year. The other two starters at the end of the year were seniors. Then we return one role player in Small Forward Junior Allante Holston, RS Sophomore Power Forward/Center Khalil Fuller, who redshirted last year, and Senior guard Greg White-Pittman. I wouldn't be shocked to see White-Pittman or Fuller gone as well. So yeah. At most 6 returning scholarship players. Happy Tax Day.

  22. I was pumped about Brice when we landed him. Unfortunately, he's been mostly a letdown. Brown has never been a big factor for this team. They still represented this school, though. I wish them the best of luck wherever they end up.

  25. What really sucks about us playing the bodybag games that RV scheduled--except for Iowa, which I believe was scheduled correctly if you need a bodybag game (and we do)--is that we chose to play Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, LSU, Alabama, and other regional powerhouses who our own alums and students follow and cheer for because they grew up following them or because we have never given them a reason to care for us. So, when we lose 79-10 to OU, 65-0 to UT, 56-3 to LSU, and whatever Ark and Bama beat us by, all it does is reinforce to those alumni and students that we aren't any good compared to these behemoths. The same goes for the DFW media around here. If you play these games, playing Iowa and Wisconsin is the way to go. Big, slow teams from far away--you might be able to compete with them, but even losing to them doesn't hurt you like it does losing to the Southern Powerhouses we schedule. Playing at Texas A&M and Arkansas in the future just kills momentum you might be building when we get lose to them, usually very badly.

  26. The HDTV idea is just dumb. It looks ok by itself, but with 40 or 50 of them next to each other on each wall it will be obnoxious and a waste of money/electricity. The rest of the locker is nice.

  27. The younger amongst us are asking what is a Sunday paper? While I get the argument, times have changed a bit. I turn to the internet for my scores....the same concept that brings us low def "live when not buffering" images of our CUSA games. The late night games on Saturday night are a gas. If North Texas was on late night six times a year, it wouldn't bother me a bit. Now, paying for all of our teams to play in Hawaii or any of the MWC states? Expensive. GMG

  30. Based on the way that the players that were ready to commit to Ark State (and this is no reflection on Ark State) have switched to UNT, it seems like the key factor is not the school, campus, city, etc.

  31. We presently have a number of former SBC members in CUSA , including UNT, so reuniting in the same conference should not be a problem. I would hope that at some point both conferences set a standard for athletic budgets . That would weed out the glorified 1aa members such as ULM.Also, I miss playing Ark. State and ULL,and would like to see us in the same conference with them.

  35. Greetings - I grew up in Stony Brook, and I still have family there. If you plan to relocate to DFW, and not just go to school here, then it makes no sense to get a degree from a SUNY school. You might look into what the requirements are to get Texas residency to be able to get in-state tuition for the rest of your college career. Long ago, it was something like living here a year while taking 6 or less credits a semester; I don't know what the requirements are now. As North Texas started in 1890 as a "Normal School", and has had an excellent College of Education ever since, it would be your best choice over the other schools in the DFW area. Of course, those of us on GoMeanGreen.com are going to be biased in favor of our alma mater no matter what. :) Yes, current students and recent grads would give you better answers to your specific questions. And I too am curious on how you became a Mean Green fan all the way in New York - assuming you're not a jazz musician.

  40. It's basically semi-pro now that they've legalized what they put SMU on probation for. It's the "who can pay more in stipend." The Bamas, OUs, and Texas' of the world are like the Yankees and Dodgers. Sad that it's gone to that, but....

  41. It's all about wowing recruits with bells and whistles. And of course it's out of hand. But as the ante rises, kids get more and more jaded, so everybody has to keep topping everybody else. Unless the NCAA does something to cap expenditures, it's going to get even sillier.

  44. I don't think the Brice or Brown transfer hurt. Brown already have 2 replacements with smart and Miller. And Brice didn't fit what grant wants to do. Free up another spot to bring in one of his guys
    1 point
  45. Brice was a highly anticipated recruit but never lived up to his billing, in my opinion. Surprisingly ineffective rebounder for his height. Brown was support personnel and his scoring actually fell off from his freshman year. I would be surprised to hear McCasland begged either one of these guys to stay. Especially considering he already brought in more guys than we had roster spots for. This is much needed and welcome. Honestly with the exception of Lawson and Woolridge I'd be okay with seeing an entirely new team. Also, best of luck to both of them..

  46. Brown seemed a little out of place. A 6 foot guard that turn the ball over at a high rate is tough. Will be interesting to see if Pittman returns. Same for Fuller.
