  1. I'm a bit surprised that there haven't been any comments about this update. Vito was correct, Saturday was basically the Kam Duhon (#27 on your program) show. I commented to the person sitting next to me yesterday that, this spring, I've seen more hungry walk-on WR's than I've seen in, well, I can't remember. And the hungriest seems to be Mr. Duhon. IMHO, this guy is working himself into the starting rotation by being the WR with great hands, and the WR willing to go over the middle and take a hit from a LB/Safety. To a slightly less extent, the same could be said for Braydon Watson (#39 on your program) and Dennis Smith (a sports announcers dream name...especially these days.....#84 on your program). ....as well as the ever present Mr Lawrence (#32) still doing his Kenny Buyers imitation. And from the WR's willing to take the body shot, we go to the WR's who can deliver the long-ball- knockout-blow. With the first pass thrown in the scrimmage (from Mr. Shanbour) Tyler Wilson demonstrated his long ball threat with a 30-40yrd sideline catch. From there at least one TD catch went to our transfer from ND/TVCC, #9 on your program. On just about all of his catches, including the TD catch, he demonstrated his ability to turn a relatively short pass into a long play with his running/tackle-breaking ability. It's a very positive sign, but this is spring, and one wonders if that is great running ability or poor tackling. I say that because the next impressive catch-that-turns-into-a-tackle-breaking-touchdown-run comes from Will Boyd (#80 on your program). All total, a 30-40 yard play on his part. Mr. Bussey had some great catches out there. I didn't see our other transfer Quinetion Jackson (wearing a red jersey, but will wear #13 this fall) who made some good catches in previous practices. I suspect it's because, at this point, he can't take full contact. TE's. This seems to be the spring of getting Mr. Chumley ready for his new role. He took what seemed like all of the TE plays. He continues to get better. He made a great catch about 15-20 yards down field with a DB hanging on him, but by time he hit the ground the DB had dislodged it. He made other good-to-great grabs, and demonstrated that he can get some yards after the catch. If things continue this way, we are pretty set in the TE category. RB's. Naturally Mr. Wilson was not out there......nor was Mr. Wyche(#4 on your program). Like Mr. Duhon, Mr. Hosley (#46 on your program) is making a very strong bid to get into the RB rotation. He got a lot of the running plays and he turned a lot of them into pretty impressive tackle-breaking runs. He is quick and fast but @ 5'9" X 175 he is by no means a power back. But he is surprisingly strong in his runs. Let's put it this way, if you want to tackle Mr Hosley, you better take him all the way to the ground....and make absolutely sure his knee has touched. Defense. Overall the DL is asserting itself in a way that we all hoped they would. Not as many wide open spaces allowed, although in the beginning of the scrimmage our young Mr. Pearson (#10 on your program) saw wide open spaces to his right, that was just too tempting to overlook, and then took off on a 50+ yard TD run. He's one of those runners that is not all that quick, but when he gets his momentum going he gets faster and faster. Shanbour also ripped off a 40+ yard designed run later in the scrimmage. Anyway, the RB's all had to really earn their yardage......and not much of it came against the first team. Also of note. Just about every catch involved a DB being just right there or the WR having to wear the DB while they caught the ball. VERY AGGRESSIVE DB's.

  2. What a great day it was! This was the seventh year this game has been played, and each and every year we have raised more scholarship funds than the last, but this year was special. Through our great sponsors, our players, our donors and our silent auction bidders and buyers, we raised over $10,000 for the first time ever! And, funds are still coming in! Yes, the white team won this year's game, but it was fairly competitive this year. At times I thought of renaming the game "roller derby basketball", but both teams survived with anyone getting hurt. Probably a few "sore guys" today, but smiling in their soreness knowing that they helped raise a record amount of scholarship money for these great student-athletes! I would be hard pressed to imagine seven years ago that this event could raise over $10,000, but it just shows what the Mean Green family can do when they come together with a positive goal in mind. Too many people to thank here, but to all our donors, sponsors, players, Cheer Team parents, Student Affairs team, Athletic Department team, Advancement folks and spectators I say "thank you....thank you so much" for making this event a success...AGAIN! You have shown a bunch of student-athletes and their parents that the Mean Green Nation is a caring and generous bunch. Thanks to all...stand by for bigger and better next year! Already working on it.

  3. Thank you for a great assessment of yesterday's scrimmage - I thought the offense looked much better yesterday as well vs the last scimmage . I'm looking forward to next weeks scimmage . We are much better on defense and offense vs last year .I continue to be impressed with our coaching staff . Last year I predicted us to win about 5-6 games and be bowl eligible . I think we will win more next year if we can beat SMU and win all the games we are suppose to win . I'm betting we win 6 games and hopefully maybe a bowl game to give us 7 .

  4. This is an April fools question, right? North Texas all the way. My longhorn friends and metro peeps call it unt. But I call it North Texas because it says all that it needs to say - we are North Texas and not smu tcu uta or utd. We encompass all of this vibrant region which ranks as one of the most progressively successful engines in the world. I even got used to seeing No Texas which bugged for half a year then when we won it just looked better. If I were MTSU I wouldn't change a thing. They have carved out their directional school niche just fine. GMG

  6. Yes! This issue is something that Talons takes very seriously into consideration, it is something we all avoid collectively. There are times we say "That Spells" to replace "M'fing" so that it could distraught groups who say it, but in general we make sure to void from that problem... A solution another Talon brought up, was for all of us to start saying "Let's Go". I did not mind 100% of the time, for I do like see what few have to say. But like you stated, I did start this as an invitation for the Alumni event, although just to get this set in stone, there are some new changes coming soon as well as maybe implementing older traditions, etc. But thank you letsgiveacheer, I appreciate your defense, and I think discussions about different implementations could be put into a different thread at some other time. I will communicate with our Exec. Board about a few things this week and I'll be back on different subjects.

  7. "North Texas" has been a part of who we are since Joshua Crittendon Chilton was the first President of North Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute back in 1890. Regardless of what year you graduated, North Texas is on your degree. We are not comparable to an SMU or a USC because their current abbreviations have always stood for the full name of the school. UNT does not abbreviate the school that every generation of our alumni attended. Tradition is about shared history, ties that bind us all together...not about whether people from outside our family gravitate towards our moniker. We are who we tell people we are. If they don't recognize North Texas it's because we have done a piss poor job of championing our brand. That isn't going to change because we give them the mental shortcut of memorizing three letters.

  10. Cheers I wasn't scolding our talon leader for not doing something. I'm just saying that as older alum we get a chance to see some cool sheet as our income rises and our jobs take us different places. This is not the forum but create one for cool spirit ideas. The alum are not consistently asked for ideas for enhancement and as a trainer of five star experiences worldwide I just want to constantly push the envelope on what can be done. Go talons and gmg!

  13. Enjoyed the pod, guys! While I certainly don't agree with the view that the McCasland hire is a misguided allocation of resources, I definitely support the open discussion with varied opinion. I only wish others would have challenged the complete resignation to CUSA being a one bid conference. If all programs improved collectively, what's to keep CUSA from occasionally having multiple representatives? Also, spending this kind of money suggests the expectation of McCasland is that he be that one bid, if the conference only gets one. I'm very excited to place that level of expectation on the program.

  14. People who apply the "directional" tag apply it to any college that has a direction in its name, other than when that direction is the name of the state itself (e.g., North Carolina, South Carolina). The tag would apply to Southern Cal just as certainly as it would to North Texas--North Texas is not part of a bigger flagship system. It is a public university as opposed to a private, but that's a moot point. The tag has everything to do with the name and nothing to do with anything substantial. And the fact that it would apply to Southern Cal shows just how dumb, ill-informed, and useless the "directional" tag is. Did Southwest Texas State University somehow become a more legitimate university the day they dropped "Southwest" from their name?

  15. You know they can't promote a recruit until they sign a LOI, right? And if you do know this, why would you ask this? And if you did not know this, now you do - so maybe don't ask it again.

  16. Just do what the big boys do...use the best logo or brand for certain situations. Two P5 schools that are similar to us in name are: 1. University of North Carolina: (UNC), (North Carolina), ram & interlocked NC for spirit/sports branding 2. University of Southern California: (USC), (Southern Cal), Trojan & interlocked SC for spirit/sports branding University of North Texas: (UNT), (North Texas), eagle & interlocked NT for spirit/sports branding

  17. I've preached on this before. Jerry building his tomb in Arlington it has forced him to brand any big events as North Texas Superbowl, North Texas Final 4...etc. By default we get name awareness for North Texas to hundreds of millions for free. We would be idiots to go solely with UNT. Now, a rebrand...I have never been a fan of the give it to me lance font or the judas priest eagle we use, but any trip through the Union says the eagle is here to stay.

  21. Ehmm, so I guess we go after those "prep" schools now (I'd be lying if I said I liked it, but I guess can't have everything. In any case I am unsure: that is a high school and he comes with 5 to play 4? I even went to their website and have to say didn't get any smarter as to what kind of school it actually is.

  23. Never though I would hear someone concerned that NT paid too much for a coach. Frankly, I didn't get the point that compensation should be tied somehow to the fact that CUSA is a one bid NCAA conference. That is like believing that the football coaches compensation should be tied to the likelihood of getting into the playoff series. The sad fact is that the NT salary is high only compared to CUSA at this point in time. Two years down the road it probably won't be. I can only hope that NT gets good enough that rpi's mean something. Setting at a rpi of 338, I am not worrying about NT suffering because of conference affiliation.

  26. I don't recall who pointed this out in a previous post, but "Why not North Texas?" I may be a little fuzzy on specifics, but I think UNT is paying the Cowboys $1 million to be a "sponsor " at the Star in Frisco, [our campus is across the street]yet Texas Tech schedules their spring game there. What a great idea! What a great opportunity [missed]for exposure in the Metroplex.Where is the leadership in our Athletic Department? All I have seen our new AD accomplish is a home and home with Tech in 10 years and bring in more management to what appears to be a somewhat bloated department. In fact, where is the leadership at UNT to allow us to get smoked on this excellent marking move by Tech, when we are a $1 million "sponsor"? For all you old timers, I believe it was Pogo in the comics who said "I have met the enemy and he is us."

  27. We chose Shanice Stephens over Vic Schafer...one lost to TWU, the other just beat UConn to end a 111 game winning streak. As we say, only at North Texas...

  28. The only way a directional school can overcome the stigma is through athletic success, unfortunately. Many crappy schools are considered by the unwashed masses to be good universities due to success in football (SEC comes to mind).

  30. I don't mean to quote your post individually, it's just one of many instances I've seen mention Southern Cal/USC. It isn't a directional school because it isn't some offshoot redheaded stepchild of a bigger flagship state run university system. It is its own privately run entity. There is no University of Northern California. If there were, its name is presently Stanford. As for locally, when I lived damn near across the street from that school, most locals just referred to it as "SC." Same goes for whoever mentioned "Southern Methodist." Not a directional school because not part of a larger state run institution. Now then, let's get to the important matters. If we're to start re-branding (AGAIN), can we start talking a new shade of green (AGAIN?) Nothing says consistently getting your name out there to the world like changing it every six months.

  31. It would not be asking too much to "try" something like this. And here's a crazy thought, have your spring practice on a weekend in talent rich Desoto or in Aledo. Just two years ago, a kid from Aledo HS, coming off yet another TX HS championship, was quoted as saying something like "I didn't even know North Texas played at the highest level..." Maybe a spring practice to a hotbed within an hour of so of campus might be worth it. If not, go back to our current strategy.

  33. Life was easier when we were North Texas State. All the students use U.N.T., while most older alumni seem to go with North Texas. I don't like initials[U.C.F.,N.M.S.U.,M.T.S.T., B.F.F.,Etc.] The reality is that once you get away from our border states no one knows who we are anyway so I really don't wee what difference it makes. Of course, I would rather be "Eagles," but that ship has sailed. How about "U.N.T. Mean Green Eagles from North Texas located north of D.F.W.".

  35. Older grad and I live out of state in the northeast. I wear A LOT of North Texas gear (with pride I will add). I bet if you asked my friends, coworkers, acquaintances, etc. where I went to college, over 98% would be able to correctly tell you The University of North Texas. On the other hand, other than my closest friends who I have actually asked, I couldn't tell you where people I know went to school. Unfortunately, North Texas still has a negative directional school stigma attached to it. Unless I explain it to them, North Texas might as well be Eastern Connecticut or Southern New Hampshire. It's just the way it is and for some reason it seems that we will never be able to get away from it. Lots of examples have been provided of "directional" or directional-sounding schools that have avoided this stigma. A couple more that come to mind are UCF (Central Florida) and USF (South Florida). It seems they have been able to avoid the curse by promoting the acronym instead of the full name. Given this and the apparent rising popularity of UNT among the younger crowd, I sided with Harry (and a few others) and voted for UNT. Timing seems right with all new/positive energy surrounding our athletics future. I've always disliked seeing N. Texas, Nor. Tex., North Tex and as NM Green point out the worst one, No Tex (or No Texas) on the scoreboard summary. Still irks me that Southwest Texas State University was able to grab Texas State.
