  1. I agree with all of your points, Harry. However, he should not have even made it to his fifth season.

  2. 1. By waiting as long as UNT has there will be nothing to hold him to anything. He will have received all pay he's entitled to. I'll also disagree that he's a "good recruiter". Good implies that he's above average, I don't think he built a better than average CUSA level roster. Obviously he can't coach at more than bottom third of conference level. 3. I didn't like his retention from the moment it was announced and said that I'd much prefer WB cut the dead weight immediately. I think Benford has already had multiple Portland St level crises: first ever loss to a D2 school; first home losing season in 13 years; lose 20 games three times; and unlikely to hit 10 wins even including the two gimme games and will not hit 10 D1 wins this season; missed the conference tournament.

  5. As it turns out, the smoo series was not scheduled for 10 years and it did not handcuff us from future schedule flexibility. It was a simply a 4 game series with additional language about good faith negotiations to extend. It appears both sides have looked at the landscape and determined that the series is mutually beneficial and decided to extend another 4 games. I look forward to the next 4 games.

  6. One of the few things I think RV got criticized for that I don't think was warranted was his scheduling of Army and SMU. They are exactly the kind of programs, NT currently needs on its schedule. NT has not shown they can consistently beat either one, but both should be winnable games. SMU and TCU are the best opponents NT could possibly have in terms of local access. Army is a national name that will always draw some interest. Those wanting to upgrade the schedule for higher level competition, are way ahead of the program.

  7. Head CoaSh Scott R. Gernander Fifth Season Sam Houston State University (2006, M.A. 2008) Overall: 97-30 (281) 476-1849 Email After spending a season as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, Sam Houston State University, Scott R. Gernander returned to San Jacinto College in 2008 to the school where his collegiate playing days began to serve as an assistant coach under his legendary father, Scott Gernander. After serving the 2012-2013 season as Interim Head Coach, the younger Gernander was promoted to the top spot in the Summer of 2013. During Gernander’s fourth season, San Jac men’s basketball team finished the 2015-2016 season with a 22-10 overall record, 12-7 in Region XIV play, advancing to the semifinals of the Region XIV tournament in Lufkin, Texas. Corey Davis earned a spot on the all-region second team and Region XIV South Zone second team, while Jorden Duffy, Ilker Er, and Candido Sa were each named Region XIV South Zone Honorable Mention. The “third time’s a charm” proved to be true for Gernander, as he guided his 2014- 2015 team back to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament in just his third season as head coach. The return trip was the first for San Jacinto College since 2006, and the 20th overall appearance in the national tournament. San Jac opened the 2014-2105 season winning six straight before hitting a snag in a trip to Florida. It then won 11 out of the next 12 games before falling to Tyler in the Region XIV tournament. However, the NJCAA selection committee recognized the team’s success, and awarded them one of four at-large bids to the national tournament. Four players averaged double- digit points for the year, and five grabbed postseason honors. Willie Mangum was an all-region first- teamer, and Donte Thomas a second-teamer. All-South Zone honorable mention selections included Jevonlean Jedgeman, Naiel Smith, and Michael Hunter. Gernander was the Region XIV Coach of the Year with a 28-6 overall record. In his second season at the helm of the San Jac program, Gernander’s team went 23-8 overall record, and was the number three seed in the regional tournament. Anthony Livingston, Carrington Ward, and Richard Benedyth all earned postseason honors. Livingston was named to the Region XIV South Zone all-conference team and was an all-region selection, while Ward and Benedyth were named to the all-conference South Zone second team, with Ward taking home all-region honorable mention honors. The 2013-2014 squad averaged 87.3 points and 44.6 rebounds per game, finishing with a 14-5 conference mark. In 2012-2013, Gernander guided San Jacinto College to a 24-6 record and the semifinals of the Region XIV tournament. Under his tutelege, Mohammad Lee was named a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) all-American and all-Region player, while Danny Lawhorn and Zach Lofton were also named to the all-Region squad. The 2012-2013 San Jac team averaged nearly 91 points per game, and won the Region XIV South Zone, finishing with a 14-5 conference record. As a graduate assistant at Sam Houston State from 2005-2008, Gernander coached on teams that recorded a combined 66-27 record, and had three 20-win seasons in the Southland Conference. The 31-year-old Gernander played as a guard at Sam Houston State University from 2003 to 2005, where the Bearkats were 31-27 during his time on the court. Prior to playing at Sam Houston, Gernander was a member of the San Jacinto College men’s basketball team, where he played on teams that went a combined 57-12, won two conference titles, and were national junior college runners-up. He averaged 8.1 points per game while at San Jacinto College. Before playing at San Jac for his father, Gernander was a first team all-district and second team all-region guard for Coach Boyce Paxton at Sam Rayburn High School in Pasadena. He averaged 17.8 points as a senior. Gernander received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Sam Houston State in 2006 and a Master of Arts in Kinesiology in 2008. He married Amanda Crabtree in June of 2008. The Gernander Coaching File Season Record 2015-2016 22-10 2014-2015 28-6 2013-2014 23-8 2012-2013 24-6 Overall 75-20 He may be a bit young at 31, but he does have head coaching experience with good results. San Jac jc is currently #3 in the Jc rankings at 25-1. Your thougts on this up and comer?

  9. "Overhaul of athletic fundraising processes and structure. We will develop greater accountability and direction in order to meet the needs of a growing Division I program " Cynics will ask, accountability to who exactly? For now, it's at least refreshing to see this even mentioned. I have no idea how far along the track/soccer stadium was or the new IPF before Wren got here. It really doesn't matter, because the vast majority of us probably won't ever know. We'll just give him the credit for the fastest ever facility finance/build-out that most of us have seen at UNT. Perception on Wren Baker is that he's a mover, and if UNT keeps this up, that will help us build momentum with donors on down to the casual observer as a program on the rise.

  13. I get what you are saying but none of the teams listed would put more butts is in Apogee than Army and SMU. Now I'm all for scheduling the teams you listed, especially Tulsa, over Incarnate Word and the like. I'm not sure any of the teams you listed are more recognized than SMU though. Maybe as recognized but not more recognized. Don't forget SMU has been in the news more recently than pony excess. June Jones quitting, Larry Brown controversy, Chad Morris being wooed by Baylor, etc. Also, they still play TCU annually.

  15. That would be comical. Romo's & Osweiler's salaries together are $30Mil. Osweiler sucks, and you can't rely on Romo to play more than 5-6 games.

  20. I am not trying to stir up anything here, I just have a three-part question that has been in the back of my mind for some time. A. Did Frazier feel pressured to play before he was physically able? OR B. Did Frazier push himself too hard ? OR C. Was this simply a case of "shit happens"? Whatever the answer, I feel for him and hope he can get healthy...whether he plays for us again or not.

  21. I wouldn't count on it, but at the same time this is his last chance to make something out of his college career. If he's getting advice from anyone who has any clue, they'd be strongly encouraging him to come back and make the most of this opportunity or his career of playing meaningful basketball is likely over.

  25. Been here for 24 years. People can talk about money, budgets, facilities, conference-affiliation, fan support and whatever else excuse you can come up for not winning. The reason for the failure of UNT Athletics is nothing but poor decision-making and gutless leadership. And letting Benford coach this year, much less finishing out the season is at the top of that list. Whether it was the firing of RV, Helwig, Trilli, Benford, Dodge, or Mac, UNT let it get to the worst possible point before making a move. It had to get to rock bottom before deciding enough was enough. You can have all the shiny buildings you want, you don't fix that, nothing changes.

  29. We should definitely be higher than 125, but since when do I care what ESPN has to say about anything? If ESPN had their way, every college football game in existence would be Alabama vs Ohio St. several times a week. They've no interest whatsoever in either covering or positively commenting on anybody in the G5.

  32. No. I want to be able to cheer for Lance. Can't do that if he puts on a Texans' uniform. Plus, that team has zero personality and no chance of consistently winning.

  39. OK, Litrell is an offensive guru, and it's gonna take a while to get the pieces to truly judge his system. How long are we supposed to give him? Maybe it's just me, but it dosent seem like we have the QB of the future settled... What's been quietly forgotten is the whole picking Morris to run the offense and a true freshman beating out his top guy. And he did it by running. Not throwing. It had a Greer feel to it and thanks to Fine's heart, he made some big plays. I didn't see great coaching. I saw Fine play with heart. I guess Litrell gets credit for putting in a faster QB. Littrel still has to be able to have an eye for QB talent if this is going to work. And if we were going to wind up playing a running QB, wonder how demarcus smith would have looked with another year and development. I guess they didnt see anything they could develop.

  40. Sutton one on one several times is bad coaching. Period. Especially on 3rd and long. I don't think Littrell took over special teams. I just don't think special teams was an emphasis as it was with McCarney. Even the 1-11 team made plays with the special teams.
    1 point
  41. Littrell and staff missed a lot with the Xs and Os. Not sure what fans are seeing. Our special teams were not as good as they were under mccarney and I'm sure perry did not have as much input as he did under mccarney. Our special teams made big plays and helped win games before Littrel got here. Not having a saftey over the top vs a beast like Sutton. And he was on the belintnicoff list before the season. Our secondary gave up big plays all year and were no match against good QBs. The two teams we looked decent against in 2015, UTSA and UTEP we looked bad with Littrel. Seem liked Litrell and staff completely ignored what was somewhat successful vs those teams the previous year. Playcalling wasn't as predictable as it was under mccarney, but it was questionable. I didn't see a great in game coaching performance like some did. They added more passing and brought the corners up. A move most on this board asked for and would have made. If we give Littrell and staff, the 2013 team will buyers play corner or WR? If corner, are they leaving him on an island with no safety? Littrel still has a lot to prove. Mac has plenty to bash without taking credit from his 9 win season. No way am I going to assume Littrel can win 10 games (UNT record?) with ANY team cause he went 5-8 his first year.

  42. Sir, this is North Texas. Those goals are probably a bit lofty. See the last five seasons if there is any doubt.

  43. I guess we should drop down to the Sun Belt again for some cheap wins then since who you beat no longer matters. What about Troy, ULM, and FAU? The '01 TCU team was 6-6 and played in CUSA. The '02 Arizona team was 4-8. The '03 Air Force team was 7-5 in the MWC. The '04 Baylor team was (3-8). Not all the teams you listed were the juggernauts then that they are today.
