  1. My son turns 13 today. He's a huge Mean Green fan. Thanks to Hank Dickenson for the perfect birthday present. Now, let's go get that win tonight. GMG!

  2. He's a die hard fan and we need more like him. Even if we didn't see eye to eye on RV.

  4. With the new regime on board I hope do more celebrate the athletic history of UNT. After the Joe Green statue, I think next person that should be honored in a bigger way is Coach Mitchell. If Joe is our "Willie Mayes" who came after our Jackie Robinsons :(King & Hayes) would it be wrong to call Odus Mithell our Branch Rickey? Even when I do a Google search on this coach it seems like his legacy is deliberately diminished. He led North Texas to the most conference titles as head coach also. The total is mentioned but the fact that is the most in the history of the school's football program isn't. And the fact is that there are probably no "Mean" Joe Greens on campus for Hayden Frye to coach to greatness without Odus Mitchell making the decision to integrate his team. Or at very the least his decision not to stand in the way of the person who made call paved the way. How instrumental was Odus Mitchell to the integration of UNT Football? I can only theorize because I wasn't there and my internet research has revealed little. Even the DRC article honoring 100 years of UNT football (circa 2013) doesn't even mention Mitchell while documenting the story of Abner and King. It does however mention the JV coach? http://www.dentonrc.com/sports/colleges/north-texas-headlines/20130728-football-eras-of-success.ece?ssimg=1121938 No offense to the JV coach but I bet his head wasn't going to be the biggest head to roll if integration was a failure for UNT Football.

  6. I think I heard Fly was the sole reason one or two of our non-revenue teams survived some really bad times. DOn't know him, but I have a feeling he's just participating in weekend football festivities.

  11. Joe Greene was NT's greatest player and has always been a major asset of the program. However, I think the big story and the one that should be honored above all else is the the early integration of NT. Leon King, Abner Haynes, team mates, Odus Mitchell and the administration that backed the move to allow Afro-Americans to play at North Texas, all deserve a lot more recognition. How many current high school players and others realize that NT integrated athletics in 1956, nine years before the much more lauded SMU recruitment of Jerry LeVias.

  19. I don't like white helmets. The throwback one was nice but the current helmet in white looks way oversized on the players' head.

  20. Really hope we score first, think it will be key in keeping the crowd and team "engaged". Fall behind double digits early like a weekend ago and you're in deep trouble. Punch them in the mouth first, and I like our chances.

  21. These guys have families, it's called being respectful and giving them time to find new positions. Some of them put in good work for us, even though the athletic department as a whole has been a failure under RV. Trust me, everyone from RV's staff knows their time is probably coming. Just to clarify though, we are complaining about spending too much money on athletics?

  22. This appears to be Nitardy's position. And chill about where the money is coming from. If it wasn't there for Wren to use, then he wouldn't be making these hires. Thanks Smatresk!

  23. Changing how the band performs I don't think is going to be that big of a driver to getting people to the games, much less into the stadium sooner. Having a winning football program will far outweigh how the band performs for pre-game and half-time.

  28. Has a TON of UNT alums and former players on it. I know for sure HC- J.D. Martinez OC- Derek Thompson probably OL Nic Summerfield just announced a day or two ago he was coaching up there. Just an FYI as these boys play in the Denton, Ryan, Braswell district. If you are bored on Friday Nights it would be fun to go support them. Unless they're playing The Colony and you better chose me over them. That is all.

  34. I think the band is absolutely a huge part of the experience. They're night and day better during actual game action (firing up the crowd noise on 3rd down), but the overall pregame needs major work. If they do nothing else, I just want them to find a way to close the 10 minute gap from when the pregame show ends and the team runs out. Its a momentum killer and I've never traveled to an away game where our opponents had this issue. Many other schools are able to time it better, so why can we not?! I'm also sure the responsibility here may not lie with the band....

  36. We have some humble people in our athletic video department. The streaming of the past softball tournament hosted at North Texas had our video department working overtime to stream all of the games. The conference office was so pleased that they asked them if they could do it again. The department has established partnership with ESPN3. There are minimum standards a streaming video production has to meet to get games broadcast on ESPN3. The athletic department has now partnered with the RTVF department to get students experience and produce a high enough quality broadcast for the ESPN3 stream. All of this while turning out road recaps in hours that have only been getting better every week, and weekly hype videos and producing/running in-stadium, in-game production. If you ask me, there is a lot of activity that is showing a lot of commitment and initiative by members of the athletic department. Especially when you consider how large (small) that team is these days...

  38. This is a tough one. MT has played well early, but we have the home field advantage, and usually play them well at home. MT are still breaking in a couple of young WRs. I think our defense could give those guys fits. I think Wilson and Ivery can run on Middle's defense. That said, we give up more sacks then any other team in C-USA. That has to stop for us to have a chance to win this game. It should be a beautiful night for football. I think the noise our crowd makes will be a factor too. Let's get a week better. All signs point to me going to the game by my lonesome tomorrow, so I've got an extra club ticket if anybody needs it and would otherwise be stuck buying a guest pass. Yours for the exorbitant price of exactly zero genuine US Freedom Bucks™ (Ginsu knives not included). PM me if you want it. First message in the inbox wins. Annnd spoken for.

  40. Saturday's game feels like one of the most important games in the last three years. On the surface, nothing much is at stake in this game. An early season match up between a top of the pack MTSU and a bottom dweller but improving NT will not excite the masses. No doubt, MTSU has the more talented, more experienced team led by a much more veteran successful coaching staff. They have star power and have just came off a big come-from-behind win. However, this is sitting up as perfect ambush game. MTSU has never played particularly well in Denton. There is a big tenacity for them to look forward to their next game when they have their big rivalry contest against WKU. NT has improved every week in their overall game and should have a great home field advantage. A big upset may be in the works, but I wouldn't bet on it. I am however, looking forward to a game that I really think NT will play hard and has a chance of winning.

  42. So true. So, the lesson here is for North Texas to be more like small towns and their fans, than big city fans.

  43. A few things: 1.) I hope now that this report is out that you all can see why I always said before that this place only cared about costs. It may still be that way, but they are sure showing a different tone right now toward athletics. RV was the BOR's and UNT 17's boy. That relationship was obvious to anyone who looked at it. The BOR told RV stay in budget and don't complain, so that's what he did. RV told the UNT 17 they'd get preferred treatment for donations. Basically, BOR cared about costs only, RV cared about job security only, and the UNT 17 cared about access only. None of this involved winning, above lip service. 2.) UNT90 should be lauded for his ongoing battle and rant against RV and the UNT17. He was proven right, especially with that banner, which got plenty of attention in this report to represent how unhappy the few fans that were still around and tried to care had become with the constant losing, lack of care, and lack or communication from the AD's office. And his point about Hank being an absolute disaster as the next AD is dead-on. If Hank wants to keep broadcasting and still be the face of UNT athletics behind the scenes with the Denton Chamber of commerce and other civic groups, that's fine--but he needs to have NO responsibility in running anything in the athletic department. The same goes for 99% of the AD employees that served under RV. They learned laziness and incompetence and never even tried to do anything different. 3.) I feel like the recruiting part of this isn't bad at all. Kids want to play and earn a degree. Parents want to know the coaches will take care of their kids. High school coaches want to know if you are going to win. All of those are still available, no matter what this report has publically brought out what a lot of us already knew. 4.) Costs are going to have to be increased on the MGC, season tickets, and individual games for football and basketball. Until we get more butts in seats, the revenue has to get raised on the people who will pay for it. If you are paying for any of this now, you have shown that you will pay for it pretty much anyhow. Meanwhile, the new AD staff will have to identify ways to attract people to be interested in our teams that have never really shown to be very interested--and they have to do it without have anything to really hang their hats on from a winning standpoint. That's gonna be tough, no doubt, but if we are to move forward, its a must. And its entirely possible that our culture that caused this mess may not be changed--its going on 50 years of not giving 2 $hits about sports and having the leaders of the university, faculty, and within Denton that have openly opposed athletics in every way possible. Its what Wren and company have to defeat or else this thing has no chance to stay at the highest level of play in college athletics when the final realignment occurs and the Power Leagues and their affiliates pull away from the lower level G5s and FCS for good.
