  1. So I'd been meaning to share this before but hadn't had the time and couldn't really find the right place. As some people know, I'm the rare TAMS kid who stayed at UNT and got my degree. This summer was my 20-yr TAMS Reunion, and, for the first time, UNT hosted an official reunion for us. Now, we're not idiots (TAMS kids, remember?) so it was a pretty obvious money grab... and I applaud it. UNT has long needed to tap into a resource of people who leave UNT and go to places like MIT and CalTech and UC Berkeley. But a lot of those kids also go to places like UT and A&M. One reason that happens is that UNT has not historically granted auto-scholarships to TAMS students, post-TAMS. Well, Smatresk spoke at the event and indicated the University was going to do this, and committed to coming up with ways to encourage and keep TAMS students in the fold. This is the first time the University has really paid attention to TAMS alumni, who are generally doing pretty well out in the world. Now I'm admittedly a vagabond and weirdo who operates on the fringes of society, but most of my classmates are exactly what you'd expect. They're physicians and engineers and programmers and have letters before and after their names. When members of my class opted to start an independent endowment fund for TAMS this past year, it hit $52k within about 6 months. Half of that total came from my class of less than 200 people. That was without any real formal push and minimum effort. This is a resource that has been woefully underutilized for a long time. I'm glad UNT is finally working towards giving it attention. As the Zen Master said, "We'll see."

  7. Obama is not responsible for crazy people flipping out. Neither are any other Republican or Democratic politician. This is why I hate politics. The guy who killed the police officers, we now know, had serious personality issues. Got kicked out of the army. Couldn't hold a real job. Held extreme views. This is something no politician can just "fix." What can be done, but what rubs up against the First Amendment die-hards, is cracking down on hate groups' use of the internet to spread/spew their messages. The balancing act, then, would be, 'how much do we let these hate groups get away with before shutting down their online presence,' This police killer seemed to become radicalized online same as the kid who murder the people in the black church. There needs to be a revisiting of what constitutes protect First Amendment speech in light of those two incidents..

  8. Our athletics have recently undergone changes in leadership on their own. Do you believe that they can boost school spirit this fall? Smatresk: I’m also very excited for the new coach and football program. It’s going to be a few years before we see the full potential of the program, but I believe choosing [Seth Littrell] was the right decision. Gosh, I sure should have liked to hear President Smatresk voice a "commitment" and backing for athletic success. And hiring a top athletic director to lead us.

  11. I expected us to be near the bottom since we are coming from a 1-11 record with a new coach and a new quarterback. Prognosticators are not going to dig very deep reviewing one and two win teams. I still believe that this coaching staff is going to be better than advertised and the talent on board is underrated and late signees were done after the preview articles went to press. I believe that Coach Littrell said that the talent level was better than people think and that poor performance last year was more due to lack of motivation and effort. My instinct and optimism tell me that this is a four win team with the capacity to even be bowl eligible if the coaching staff is able to get new schemes to gel. The enthusiasm of the new recruits is refreshing. If all new JUCO recruits show up and play to near their potential we could be the team with the biggest turnaround.

She has testified she used only one device to read/send emails...but the FBI says she used multiple devices. And it goes on. Rick

  22. I think he's wrong to do that, for sure. Can't argue that. However, even before (and, even as) he says those type of things, hate groups are spreading their hate online. Something must be done about those groups - black, white, ISIS, and otherwise. The miscreants at facebook, twitter, etc. aren't policing it enough themselves. The thing I do fault Obama for is the thing I fault the media for: jumping the gun (no pun intended) on placing blame. But, sorry, Micah Johnson was a headcase set to explode no matter what Obama said or didn't say. Obama didn't radicalize him, online hate groups did. In addition, with the Minnesota situation, that governor is out of control; as is the media. Murder one is a high bar to clear, almost impossible against police officers in the line of duty - which is as it should be. They are fanning the flames there, and it does no good. This thing in Minnesota may end up the same is the situation in Baltimore - suspect died in police custody, but there is no ill intent on the part of the police that would rise to the level of a criminal act. Police must be able to do their jobs; and, they are constantly in danger. In the Minnesota situation, you had people shouting to the officers about having a gun, then not following directions. Okay, look...police officers have to make split second decisions based on their training. It's sad that the guy died, but you can't prejudge the officer publicly the way Minnesota's governor has, and the media has...as always on the media's part. Confused also as to why the Minnesota situation, with Jeronimo Yanez, was orginally called a white police/black person killing when Yanez is obviously hispanic. There is, for sure, an agenda that is being pushed, a narrative that some (in a sick way) want to keep pushing in spite of the facts. To me, that's despicable.

  25. I am pretty sure they did not dump $500 million into anything. That is over half the annual budget for UNT. The real number is around $5 million which is nice but not enough for tier 1.

  29. Her servers were perfectly legal and many others in government have used a similar set up. The only question of legality is did she use those servers to transmit classified information and know full well that she did. So far what has been proven to be her biggest offense is to be a careless idiot. Gary Johnson for President!

  32. http://m.meangreensports.com/m/sports/c-xc/spec-rel/051016aaa.html a couple of thoughts: 1. Really surprised our AD wasn't able to provide the 4K for such a critical training trip. You would think as overpaid as RV is, he would just write the check himself. Miser 2. Also surprised one of the 17 hasn't already covered this entire expense. If I had enough money to be one of the 17, I'd fund this in a heartbeat. Instead, I'll only be able to give a benjie.

  34. He said all of the coaches have played or coached in the air raid system. He kind of laughed when talking about the players transition. They have bought in, but there have been some challenges. It's more of a mind set thing, not a talent issue. Sounded like he was glad to leave Washington State, but liked coaching with Leach. Spoke highly about Littrell's vision. Talked about Alec Morris' leadership. He said Mason Fine has been looking great this summer. Also spoke highly of Quinn Shanbour. Mentioned that 7 on 7 has helped receivers and qbs transition in the spread. Jake made a joke about the Denton Ryan/ Ennis rivalry from his high school days. Teachers and coaches give him a hard time when he is recruiting there. On a side note, needed to listen to this interview today. Made me excited for the upcoming football season, and forget why I am not working downtown today.

  35. Thank you all. It has been a long rough night for all of us in the DPD family. Clearly there is no way to make this "positive" but the outpouring of support means a lot to all of us. Now I'm going to go kiss my wife and children...five of my brothers can't do that anymore.

  36. This. If Littrell gets us to 4 wins this season, he will have done something miraculous. To me, I see one game we will be favored in and that is butt cookman. Maybe we beat SMU, ARMY, UTSA or UTEP, but it's hard to see us winning more than one of them. Seriously, we go 2-10 and double last year's miraculous win total of 1--and it was a miracle--nobody better complain about Littrell being a disappointment. He is literally trying to dig us out from under a gigantic pile of manure left behind by RV, Mac, and Chico.
