  1. So I'd been meaning to share this before but hadn't had the time and couldn't really find the right place. As some people know, I'm the rare TAMS kid who stayed at UNT and got my degree. This summer was my 20-yr TAMS Reunion, and, for the first time, UNT hosted an official reunion for us. Now, we're not idiots (TAMS kids, remember?) so it was a pretty obvious money grab... and I applaud it. UNT has long needed to tap into a resource of people who leave UNT and go to places like MIT and CalTech and UC Berkeley. But a lot of those kids also go to places like UT and A&M. One reason that happens is that UNT has not historically granted auto-scholarships to TAMS students, post-TAMS. Well, Smatresk spoke at the event and indicated the University was going to do this, and committed to coming up with ways to encourage and keep TAMS students in the fold. This is the first time the University has really paid attention to TAMS alumni, who are generally doing pretty well out in the world. Now I'm admittedly a vagabond and weirdo who operates on the fringes of society, but most of my classmates are exactly what you'd expect. They're physicians and engineers and programmers and have letters before and after their names. When members of my class opted to start an independent endowment fund for TAMS this past year, it hit $52k within about 6 months. Half of that total came from my class of less than 200 people. That was without any real formal push and minimum effort. This is a resource that has been woefully underutilized for a long time. I'm glad UNT is finally working towards giving it attention. As the Zen Master said, "We'll see."

  7. Obama is not responsible for crazy people flipping out. Neither are any other Republican or Democratic politician. This is why I hate politics. The guy who killed the police officers, we now know, had serious personality issues. Got kicked out of the army. Couldn't hold a real job. Held extreme views. This is something no politician can just "fix." What can be done, but what rubs up against the First Amendment die-hards, is cracking down on hate groups' use of the internet to spread/spew their messages. The balancing act, then, would be, 'how much do we let these hate groups get away with before shutting down their online presence,' This police killer seemed to become radicalized online same as the kid who murder the people in the black church. There needs to be a revisiting of what constitutes protect First Amendment speech in light of those two incidents..

  8. Our athletics have recently undergone changes in leadership on their own. Do you believe that they can boost school spirit this fall? Smatresk: I’m also very excited for the new coach and football program. It’s going to be a few years before we see the full potential of the program, but I believe choosing [Seth Littrell] was the right decision. Gosh, I sure should have liked to hear President Smatresk voice a "commitment" and backing for athletic success. And hiring a top athletic director to lead us.

  11. I expected us to be near the bottom since we are coming from a 1-11 record with a new coach and a new quarterback. Prognosticators are not going to dig very deep reviewing one and two win teams. I still believe that this coaching staff is going to be better than advertised and the talent on board is underrated and late signees were done after the preview articles went to press. I believe that Coach Littrell said that the talent level was better than people think and that poor performance last year was more due to lack of motivation and effort. My instinct and optimism tell me that this is a four win team with the capacity to even be bowl eligible if the coaching staff is able to get new schemes to gel. The enthusiasm of the new recruits is refreshing. If all new JUCO recruits show up and play to near their potential we could be the team with the biggest turnaround.

  14. Glad Emmitt is okay. Donation made. Dad was a 40 year DPD vet- great department, better people. I know it's egocentric, but damn if it doesn't feel different when it hits this close to home. I feel numb. And to some of Y'all- stop it. Not here. Not this one. It's beyond gross.

  22. So am I. Because this optimism is based on years of watching a lot of North Texas football, both very good and very bad. I also agree with the logical part of his analysis. That being that no publication is going to dig very deep on a 1-11 team, and unless you've gone to the actual practices, you really don't know what this team's true potential is. And even if you have gone to the spring practices and spring game, the new influx of players (hopefully that also means talent) can change the dynamics very noticeably..........hopefully in the upward direction. Now, it's time for the game day atmosphere to take on a different look/energy. These coaches and players can't do this all by themselves. If we're not excited and committed, then why should they be? I'm pretty tired/sick of seeing players constantly encouraging the fans to raise their noise level/participation. THAT'S NOT THEIR JOB!

  26. treason: the crime of betraying one's country, especially by attempting to kill the sovereign or overthrow the government. Hillary did not do that. She did put classified information at risk. If she had intentionally sent that classified information to unauthorized people that could be prosecuted as treason. She did not do that. Therefore calling what she did (evidence would seem to indicate she did) treason is extreme. Not worthy to be president valid, criminal negligent probably, but treason absolutely not. I hate this new mindset in America: It like when someone you don't like punches someone once you think it is okay to charge them with attempted murder when the victim needed no medical attention. Conservative and anti-Hillary people want to turn this punch into attempted murder. That is what I call extreme. I did not post a single thing that could be translated as an excuse. My contention is was the improper use of the word treason. It is the same mindset that has people calling all Sanders supporters communist or all Trump supporters racist. It is stupid and it makes our country look like we are mostly judgmental idiots.

  28. Mr. Emmitt, watching CNN last night I had the pleasure of hearing an African-American (i mention her race to emphasize the quality of the message in a time like this) lady speak to the world about how much the citizens of Dallas love their DPD. She spoke about how she and her kids feel safe around our officers, how amazing the love was between everybody during the protest, how you can be walking down the street and be greeted by a random member of our DPD, and how our DPD protected them all when this happened. She told the world how amazing our DPD is to all of Dallas and are not discriminatory. I mention this because I think it's important for you to know that you are backed by all of Dallas, not just a small portion of our community. My brother is a member of DPD and one of his friend's lost his partner of three years at the hands of the shooter. My grandfather too was an officer for over 20 years. We love you all and value all of you. Dallas police has the lowest amount of officer involved shootings out of any major city in the country. No police department deserved this, but it just sickens me even more knowing we lost amazing officers who have nothing to do with what's going on around the country. Sorry for the long message. I support our men and women in Blue.

  30. in cusa if we get decent qb play we will do well. We are not in a super conference. We had a terrible QBS last year. If we get decent qb play 3-4 wins is possible. I don't see us getting five or six but I hope I am proved wrong. I always hope for the best with this team.

  33. Thanks, Rick. Appreciate that. As for 90's post, while it doesn't deserve a response as is as disgusting an insinuation as I can imagine, rest assured that some of us who don't wish to devolve into politically charged discourse at a time of honoring, mourning, and finding ways to support our DPD family (who we grew up with, who were and are family and friends) are the LAST people who "support hatred of police." Vile garbage.

  38. Good prediction based on the past. I talked with a UNT football coach this past weekend and he said they are "all-in" on beating SMU. He said the priority is winning the first one, winning at home, and just winning. Coach speak, of course, but said we will know a lot about the team and the season after the first game.
