  1. "Keeping a team with some promise together in men’s basketball could make some sense to the people making the decisions. There is no guarantee a new coach could keep that group together." God forbid we lose players off this once a generation mean green team that won 12 freaking games and lost 20! And to any of the "people making the decisions" who may read this topic... Eat a big bag of D's for ruining mean green basketball.

  2. I mean, I know it's the fashion du jour to violently hate everything and everyone with such a white hot burning passion that our collective blood pressure could power a relaunch of the space program, but on Apogee being one step above a high school stadium, I will politely disagree with you, good sir.

  3. TBS. Even Benturd kept all but one of JJ's when he was hired. We have lost players while he was the coach. We might lose some if he is gone. If that is the reason for keeping him, that is incredibly stupid. This line of thinking also implies that nobody can bring in players on the same level as Benturd. Let me make this next statement clear. This is not a shot at our current players, but the bottom line is that we are talking about keeping a crappy coach because we are afraid that we might lose a couple of players from a losing basketball team.

  4. I'm just confused why we're worried about two players decision to play with a new head coach? If they want to leave, let them leave. I wasn't aware that our entire basketball program relied on these two players. I'd like to think that our entire program is bigger than certain individuals players but I could be wrong. .

  5. So... Because of all the terrible hires that have been bought out, we have no money and can't buy out this terrible hire? Who made said terrible hires? Do they still have a job?

  8. Want to know what's wrong with America look no further than the Athletic Department and Administration of the University of North Texas where incompetence, failure and mediocrity are not only ignored but promoted.

  9. This situation, assuming nothing happens, does start to make me think the sky is falling - conspiracy theorists are right. It also makes me question how much I should continue to support at all. I mean... in football there were some positives in the entire McCarney era, and when things were obviously bad a change was made surprisingly soon. But it seems that we just don't care about basketball. Either that or we can't afford to make a change, so we're making excuses for why things will be better the next year. It depresses me. If football didn't have tailgating where I get to spend time with family and friends, i'd be out completely.

  10. Ahhhhhhahahaha right. The basis of the decision has been shotgun sprayed all over this forum. It's about retaining 2 players. It's actually in my opinion about deceiving 2 players. Brown & Brice. They are the nucleus of this team moving forward. Some believe by keeping the coach intact that these 2 players will feel obligated to stay true to North Texas. If we cut the head off right now, some believe these 2 would be more inclined to transfer. Also, they can't fire our 2 "revenue" (no such thing at UNT with this AD) sport coaches in the same school calendar year. Makes RV look bad. I mean worse. It's all...just....bullshit.

  11. Add me to the mix. I'd have dropped out last year if my wife weren't threatening me with having to get on the Baylor bandwagon (MUCH more expensive) should our fall weekends suddenly not feature UNT home games. I've lost all hope at this point....which is crazy considering what we spend relative to our conference mates. We should NOT be this bad in football AND basketball, but somehow we consistently get less return on investment than what should reasonably be expected.

  13. It's funny that you think there will still be 1500 people that show up to the Super Pit if we retain Benford.

  14. Love all of the over the top comments based on an article full of the author's speculation. Know what's wrong with America today? People jumping to conclusions before the facts play out. Watch the new "30 for 30" on the Duke lacrosse team for Exhibit A.

  15. Ok...So Vito brought up buyout issues as a part of why they aren't cutting ties with Benford. SoOoOoOo...Are they going to give him a fake ass extension so we can successfully recruit more 12-20 players? If so, we are going to be sitting on our thumb in the exact same situation in 1 year. If they do not extend him we are folding shop that is UNT basketball and doing things so UNT. Again, how is the man in charge of allllll these debacles STILL employed by UNT. We're such a joke.

  20. I have no doubt that Morris will be the starter, but I have no idea who the backup will be. My guess would be something like: 30% chance - Means 25% chance - Fine 20% chance - Shanbour 20% chance - Another player not currently on the roster 2.5% chance - Dillman 2.5% chance - Chumley

  21. Buyout money seems large until you factor in the empty seats (lost revenue) and the possibility of making money by being in the big dance (huge TV revenue).

  22. We are an effing joke if we retain him. Consider how bad recruiting will be next year if we are just as much a joke next year. I feel bad for any coach following this. And suppose he does hit just .500 next year. What do we extend his contract to then? If he was 17-15, do we give him an extension?! This is ridiculous. I am at the point of so many where walking away until we get new, real leadership is likely the best for my leisure pursuits. I can't take much more of this shit show.

  24. Combs is the player that NT doesn't want to lose, he is something special. Brown is very promising and Brice has a much higher ceiling than the other tall guys NT has recruited over the past couple of decades. However, neither were major factors their first year. My un-solicited opinion is retaining players is just an excuse to hang on to Benford.

  25. Losses: Antoinne Jimmerson, Rex Rollins, Jarrod Lynn Top Returners: JR Jeffery Wilson, JR Willy Ivery Additions: HS RB Nic Smith Other returning scholarship players: JR Andrew Tucker Finally we get to a group that could actually be considered a strength of the team last year. That was due in large part to Jeff Wilson. Wilson is back after rushing for over 830 yards in 10 games. Willy Ivery also returns after rushing for 290 yards, but more impressively averaged 6.6 yards/carry. That duo is as impressive a tandem as we have at any position. In recruiting, quite possibly our top pickup was running back Nic Smith, who was rated a 3-star by three sites and held offers from two P5 programs at one point. Smith will likely be a tough call as far as redshirting, since he appears good enough to play right away. If not, Tucker and Ezzard will round out the depth chart. Both have shown some decent ability, and while they aren't great, they certainly aren't worse than what your 3rd and 4th string backs should be. It will be interesting to see how much we lean on these guys this year. We know Littrell likes to run the ball and had a back rush for almost 1500 yards last year, but we also know he and Harrell come from a Leach background where the top backs usually were around 750 yards rushing, compared to QBs putting up 5000 yards. You have to think they'll play to our strengths with Wilson and Ivery, and with inexperienced QBs and receivers. We'll see just how much, though. Also think these guys will be fun to watch in the passing game, with the receiver inexperience. Looking forward to watching these guys make plays. Position group rank: 1st

  28. Back to the original thread before the attempt at a hijack, yes this is the start of a bad time for most conference TV contracts. I don't know the details on the AAC, but the Mountain West TV dollars are NOT worth changing conferences for. To keep Boise in the fold, the MWC changed their distribution structure. Boise gets more than anyone else and after that it's based on number of appearances and NOT an equal distribution. Those that aren't on TV often - Wyoming, New Mexico - get very few TV dollars under the deal. I still think both the conference and NT should explore setting up their own streaming systems. It's not very hard nor expensive to use CloudFront from Amazon Web services. That's how Netflix started and ran till just the last year or so. Today there are so many ways to get web content on your TV set it shouldn't be a serious barrier. Sell annual subscriptions plus adds. It wouldn't take a lot of those to exceed the anticipated TV dollars and you're not limited to ESPN coverage or areas.

  31. The most confusing thing about this whole situation is that one winning season in five was not enough to keep Mac around, why would a winning season next season be enough to keep Benford around? If it is, then that is a huge problem. If it isn't, then why even keep him around for next season since the outcome will not be enough to keep him?

  34. As I said, if Benford gets retained, especially without an extension, that loud laughter you will hear is mine--and yes, I'll be laughing at my alma mater. And other than the 1500 that show up to the Super Pit, so will a lot of other folks. It is fitting that this is becoming hilarious...after all, #itsallajoke.

  35. UAB and USM are the only charter members left, USM the only charter football member left. FIU and FAU didn't play football when CUSA was chartered. ODU, UTSA, and Charlotte didn't have football when CUSA 2.0 was created. Only five schools have played 10 or more seasons in CUSA. WKU is the newest member joining in 2014 and eight schools have only one more season in CUSA than WKU. Replacing DePaul didn't turn Rice hoops into DePaul and didn't turn MTSU into Memphis. The Southern used to have Alabama and North Carolina as members, WAC used to have Arizona, Arizona State, BYU and Utah. The Valley used to have Kansas and Nebraska. The brand doesn't build schools. The schools build the brand.

  36. Yeah. And just think, there are real life people OUTSIDE of the athletic department supporting this abortion of an athletic director. It's amazing. Everyone must jump, and that includes the heavyweight donors. It's a money pit until proven otherwise. I was waiting on this exact decision to reup/move up on the giving list. I'm not doing either now. This radiates to football for me as well. I'll be buying tix at the gate this year. *slow clap*

  37. In a word, yuk. I tried to show my wife, who loves softball, the free "Spring Fling Highlights." On my iPad and my Android phone, I got the pre-roll ad with Jeff Gordon. Then the NT story loaded and I got a play button. Pushing the button, I got the ad again and the story loaded with the play button. This morning I tried it on my desktop and it worked, but being 1990s Flash, it doesn't go full screen, even when using a Chromecast to send it to my TV. I'm underwhelmed by CBS Interactive.

  40. So what you are saying is essentially, that we paid him handsomely to learn on the job, and should retain him now because there is a chance that all that training and investement might still come out to show success. I get the point, but like most on this board I really haven't seen anything that feeds the hope it will turn around. Sometimes it is better to cut your losses.

  42. Don't worry about Benford's appeal to new recruits. I found one outstanding shot blocker that has agreed to join the team next season. All we are waiting for is a qualifying SAT score. And if you DARE insult him and call him a pussy, he will drive on you and take it to the hole!

  45. Remember the days when this bball forum used to have productive and useful conversations, full chat rooms for away basketball games, along with good times, optimism and fun bits? The complaining was mainly focused around free throw shooting, competent press break, occasionally playing down to inferior opponents levels before conference games started, next level recruiting and how to take the next logical step up the food chain after a few pretty successful years? Now these are the threads we get. Ugh.
    2 points
  46. Hey! Quit complaining you insolent serfs. Do YOU have RV on speed dial? Do YOU personally fund the ridiculous buy-outs to cover for RV's ineptitude regarding hiring? Do YOU sit in your Ivory Suite surveying a vast empty stadium? Do YOU? Well, Do YOU? If not then your opinion DOES NOT COUNT. Let me repeat that. IT DOES NOT COUNT. RV, The 17, The BOR. They do not care what we think. The are playing the lyre loud and clear. Nero would be proud. RV stays within the budget and that seems to be the ONLY requirement of keeping his job. As long as he does that he will be here for 27 more months and maybe longer if he gets extended. Remember, this is the school that let Craig Helwig keep his job for more than one day so an RV extension is not out of the question. Sigh.
