  1. Twice put in charge of bad situations. Twice got the team to rally and play hard with nothing to play for. I thank him for his time here and wish him nothing but the best (unless he is playing us).

  4. Agree. Dodge's Texas ties were huge in getting us the talent that won the HOD bowl.

  5. no, their not overrated. Dodge situation was completely different. Non college asst coaches was a huge issue.

  7. This is my first post. My name is Doug Rush and I am the head baseball coach at Tomball High School. I grew up in Denton and played on the North Texas club baseball team in 82 and 83 and on its varsity program in 84 and 85. We were not very good but we were not given a chance to be either. I graduated from North Texas in 1986. I coached at Denton High until 1992 before I left to pursue head coaching opportunities. I love Denton and I love The Mean Green despite the terrible way they treated baseball in the 80's. Anyway, I am a personal friend of Mike Jinks. We coached together and ran around together when he was right out of college and we were coaching at Killeen Ellison High School. I am telling you right now that the moment I met him I knew he was destined for greatness. He was a great quarterback at Converse Judson and a legendary quarterback at San Angelo State. And yes he loves to throw the football for you guys that were inquiring. Mike will light up a room with his personality. The kids he coaches love him. He is a great football mind and he has all the intangible to be a GREAT head college football coach. And Mike wants the U.N.T. football job. I believe he will be incredible at recruiting, at assembling a staff, at promoting the city of Denton, and at promoting our university. He is a humble but confident guy and he never meets a stranger. Other coaches would love to work for him because he would be a guy you work with and not for. I sure hope he gets the opportunity to at least interview because I think he has a great plan in place for when he gets his opportunity.

  9. IMO the comments in this thread relate to Chico the man, his integrity and character. If it was a performance evaluation, one could expect some critical remarks.

  11. dodge biggest down fall wasn't texas ties. It was not having college assistants. And he didn't have 3 years experience seeing how a big 12 program was ran yes since lsu is lighting up score boards with all those 5 star recruits and nunber one running back in the nation. No thanks

  12. Other than his last name, why is everyone up in arms for this guy to come here? He's proven nothing. He has very little experience as the head of anything. Call me crazy, but if we're going to go the young OC route, I'd rather have someone who didn't piggy back off their father's success.

  14. As should be obvious by the fact that I didn't weigh in a whole lot through the course of this season, especially since Mac's firing, I wanted to temper my response and consider everyone else's thoughts before putting a few things out there. First, I think it's fair for a lot of us to have mixed feelings about Mac in general, including his firing. A lot of people, including many with much more awareness of the game than I, really thought he was a great fit here. I still think that the perennial "winner everywhere they've been" might get a rude awakening here, so the fact that Mac is more of a "take a program out of the crapper and make them competitive" kind of guy is what made him seem like such a great fit. So even though all of us, even those of us who tried to stay optimistic, saw that things were really headed in the wrong direction, it's still fair to think about how we felt so good about the hiring and wish things had gone better during the latter part of his tenure - not just for the sake of winning, but also because we thought that that's how it should have gone for Mac, as well. As a side note, if anyone recalls the statements a few of us made about Skladany's retirement, would I be wrong in assuming that most of us would consider him the overall defensive MVP of Mac's time here? He really seemed to coach guys up and get the most out of them, not just as players, but as a fearsome freaking unit. Obviously, it was time for Mac to go, and I doubt that many, if any, would disagree after this season. But it's not out of the question to have a sort of, "Damn, I still kinda hate to see him go because I thought this whole thing would go better" feeling at the same time. Yeah, it seems like he was playing favorites with McNulty, which hurt us, but if Chico and Smith aren't helping put a spin on things (along with everyone else who evaluated our other QBs that were highly touted), it sure sounds like a lot of guys thought they were coming into a piss-poor program and wouldn't have to put in the work or the time to beat out less-than-stellar competition. And AM's teammates voted him to be a team captain, so there's that too...but really, shouldn't a solid coaching staff be able to take at least one or two of those guys with raw talent and whip them into shape? So, yes, there are a lot of things in this whole scenario that could be looked at from multiple angles. At the end of the day, though, what Coach Mac was doing here didn't work out, even in that one great season where we could have/should have had at least 10 wins but lost at home to UTSA. It sucks that it didn't pan out, but no matter which side you take when considering the details, the outcome would still have to be the same and we would still be at this point. I'm still staying hopeful for next year; with a great coaching staff, some of the solid elements already in place getting a bit more experience, and a couple of perfect additions in the right spots on the roster, you never know what could happen. I won't start drinking the Kool-Aid, especially before we even get a new coach, but I don't think it's unreasonable at all to keep hoping that next year could be a complete turnaround, or at least a pretty solid start on the way to 2017. At the very least, we still have each other. And beer.

  15. I love the name Kramdrew...perhaps Ryan Gooding or Ben Munthe could also become a thing as well, on here. But then again, I'd probably get included in this with the title UNTjim9095, which is really confusing and not that funny...

  22. Withers has been a college coach over 25 years, coached in the NFL, and has been a Defensive Coordinator at four P5 universities. He's currently the head coach at James Madison where he's had a winning record every year he's been there. Mike Jinks - 3 years RB coach at Texas Tech. Jinks' vs Withers' resume isn't even close.

  24. Despite what some think, it would have been worse without Canales to take over. This is a down beaten bad team with not a lot to play for, IMO anyone expecting more out of an interim coach is being unreasonable. NT owes Canales a lot of thanks for his stepping in not once but twice. I hope he lands somewhere he can succeed and enhance his career.

  25. "He was coaching high school two years ago.. I don't want to go down this road again" UNTflyer I understand what you are saying. As a high school coach I am a little biased. I think there are some really good high school coaches that would make excellent college coaches and there are presently 3 or 4 coaches coaching big time division 1 football that were Texas high school coaches not that long ago. North Texas was burned by the Todd Dodge hire. I understand that. By the way, I was in attendance at a couple of games in Dickey's last year when it seemed like 90% of the fan base was demanding that Todd Dodge be hired. No one wants to admit that now. I personally think Dodge would have been successful eventually but was learning as he went. Plus, it always bothered me that he did not move to Denton. I think the head football coach ought to live in Denton. BUT, I don't think the Dodge hire is something that should keep Jinks out of the loop. I can guarantee you if you spent 5 minutes in a room with him you would want to suit up and play. He will get players to U.N.T. and he will do a good job coaching them. I am pretty sure Briles was only an assistant at Tech for two or three years before scoring the Houston job. I am biased but I think Mike has worked his way up the hard way and will do a good job. He didn't have anyone's coattails to ride on for an instant D-1 job right out of college. He is ready.

  27. We're hopefully one week away from hiring a new football coach. In fact, the person could already have agreed to the hire and we could hear the name leak out before next Monday. I would almost expect it to leak out before hand (perhaps as early as this week) if it's one of the bigger names like Briles, Jinks, or Meacham. If we're not ready with an announcement next week I'll be extremely disappointed and agitated because I'm impatient. I'm ready for the off-season to begin in earnest. I'm ready to hire new assistant coaches (and maybe keep one or two of the current ones). I'm ready to read about changes a new coach is making in off season training. I'm ready to look at recruiting especially for new offensive and defensive systems. I'm ready to look at who might transfer to us from a school the new coaches are coming from. I'm ready for quarterbacks to be recruited and maybe transfer in who can give us hope for quality play. I'm ready for spring ball. I'm ready for (hopefully) OPEN fall practices. I'm ready for the excitement heading into the opening game of 2016. However, I am not ready for our team to struggle mightily next season ... but that's not for another ten months. I'll take all the positive vibes heading into next season I can get. As a fan base we need that.

  28. I mean, does someone really need Texas ties to recruit in Texas? It may help right at first (see: Jinks) but over time, if the guy is a good recruiter, he'll recruit. I would focus on the strength of recruiting classes of the candidates to see what he's been up to.

  32. Shooting 60% from the charity stripe is not going to help us in close games like this. The team is actually 58.3%, which just makes me want to scream. I love Jeremy Combs but he needs to improve his FT shooting as he's sitting at 38.1% for the season right now.

  33. 56-85? I'm by no means suggesting Iowa State is an easy place to win, but if you've completely turned around a program you aren't still 30 games under .500.

  35. Exactly. So we've seen a well-known, experienced coach come in here and ONLY win with the recruits that a Texas name brought in. Unless it's somebody with national name recognition, then we need somebody with Texas ties. So whether it's a coordinator or position coach at a big school (as we've been told) or an up-and-comer from the FCS ranks, we'd better get the right guy for once. Because I'm well convinced that we've had "the right guy" at the wrong job, if that makes any sense, these last 2 hires. Dodge and Mac are great guys with great philosophies overall, just not the right coaches for the place and time. So I don't care which it is (lower level HC or upper level AC/OC/DC), as long as they can get the right guys AND coach the hell out of them.

  37. You would've fouled out in 2 minutes with these rules. We might as well just watch these guys play in bubble wrap bc no contact is allowed. Or maybe we put sensors on the players that buzz when an opposing player touches them so the ref can blow the whistle. Ive honestly never seen a team get called for more charges than North Texas. Our basketball team runs over more defenders than the football team does.

  46. Wow, that is concerning. I also find it interesting that we had a winning hangover in 2014. Despite the bad season, attendance was higher in 14 than every other year prior to 13. That does give some credence to winning impacting attendance, but that it should be coupled with marketing and promotions to get us to where we want to be.
