  1. Just wanted to let everyone know that Pro Image Sports in the Golden Triangle Mall now carries the Black "Son of Worm" Schutt AiR XP Full-Size Replica Football Helmet. Note: These are the same black helmets that debuted last year during the nationally televised game against Louisiana Tech, and not the brand new black helmets that were recently pictured during the unveiling event for this year's uniforms. They feature a tapered black center strip with repeating miniature eagles in gray. The replica helmets can be had for $130, and there is also an authentic version that can be special ordered for around $300. Just FYI.

  2. OK. You want my honest opinion on this? I don't mind that there's a student fee. What I mind is that there are a great number of alumni here who feel the end all be all solution to all our woes is to stick it to the students to and above the maximum allowable by law without assuming any personal financial responsibility. The proposed student fee of $600 ($20 X 15 hours X 2 semesters) is a greater amount than the total annual amount given by some very vocally in favor of this fee, gainfully employed alumni. That bothers me. I mean, you can easily look this up in your home game program. It's not hard math. Lots of talk about entitlement on this board. Somebody who pays less than $500 a year who is employed full time, demanding that un/under-employed students be tasked with paying a greater amount so that said alum can reap personal benefit is the very epitome of entitlement to me. I believe you should pay more. I believe I should pay more. Students? I believe they should be sold on the experience so that when they're out of school, when they have real money in real bank accounts with real disposable income, they'll buy in of their own accord for amounts much greater than $600.

  3. Ryan, I have to take exception to your post! Kram1 is a good friend of mine and there is no way that this is the dumbest post he's ever made. I have read several of his other posts that make this one look absolutely scholarly. Don't worry Kram1 I got your back.

  4. I hate to say it but the youth and passion of Morris make this an entirely different team from 2014. They were embarrassed by what they feel is a far inferior opponent and they will not stand for two home losses in a row after the opener with BU. I just don't think our coaches, players , or students realize the significance of this game and how much harder it will be to win @ Ford Stadium.

  5. 6'3" 220 4.5 speed, that's playing time intangibles. And I have a feeling this kid can play or Miss, UK, Louisville, Florida, etc. wouldn't have been offering him. Big pick up and this definitely solidifies what was already a strong LB unit.

  6. Rest assured our boys will show up pissed off and ready to hit hard and the experience is there to show it. We have our challenges to overcome but they will be ready for this game. This is not a trap game.

  7. There's a larger issue at work here, bigger than what alumni and students choose to give (or what they're forced to give). The entire "arms race" that is facilities in college athletics, and universities in general, is ridiculous. Higher education is desperate to offer value to the degrees outside of the actual education. Rec centers, internet access, amenities, etc...all of that is an an absurd level and it is going to take it's toll on everyone. In economic terms, this is a bubble waiting to pop.

  9. you make 0 sense. Zip zero zilch. So you say I as a person who already donates, should be forced to match raised student fees?? What school do you really support? Never seen in the history of college athletics seen a student fee correlate to a raise in donor members giving. But keep being delusional, that's worked real well for you huh?

  10. Well, this commuter school will have 12-15k strong in their own stadium ready to watch UNT whip some ass. Book it.

  13. pretty much. I'm a buyers fan. I don't think he's a terrible cover guy, but anyone paying attention would know that is not his strength. Especially man to man, tight, or press coverage.

  14. It sure would be nice if Jimmerson could make that jump as well, since he showed bursts of high level potential during his freshman year. I too don't get the DT/McNulty comparisons. I see very little comparison between the two physically or otherwise.

  17. And if I understand correctly, the fees are just rolled into student loans for many of these kids. Those loans are a burden to the ability of future alums earning potential....and my optimism for the future job opportunities for this generation is waning. Many of these government backed loans will go into default, so ultimately you and I will pay the increase in fees anyway. GMG

  22. If he's got an coverage skills at all, love to see him slid into the spun down run force safety.... His tackling needs to improve, while he can knock the dog out of kids smaller than him and he definitely plays mean he will have to work on wrapping up and running his feet at college level. I wish more teams taught kids how to tackle like the Seahawks, very safe, very effective way to tackle. They stole it from the rugby teams across the globe. Very cool stuff.

  23. Typically the CB opposite Buyers is the press guy. James Jones had a lot of plays in press, way more often than Buyers ever did. Makes me think Davis will be the press guy this year. Buyers does a good job of keeping the pass play in front of him, and keeping those plays short. He's not very fast so he plays off the receiver, and likely the Z receiver.
    1 point
  24. Yes. Buyers is usually solid vs the run, but his cover skills is at times very lacking. He needs to play to his strengths and punish people vs the run. If he does that he can revert the running game to dominantly one side of the field on outside running plays.

  25. I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that a one-on-one with a P5 would "break the bank." Old Dominion's stadium has a capacity of just over 20k. If we get a comparably local P5 team into Apogee (Texas Tech, OSU, Arkansas), you can rest assured we'll at least approach 30k in attendance. We'd obviously make more on that one game than ODU will on theirs.

    1 point
  27. It is hard to schedule anything other than mid majors and FCS with our pitiful attendance. Guarantees for a one and one with a P5 would break the bank. Now if we had the funds from a decent student athletic fee like other comparable universities with whom we are asked to compete then you have a whole different situation.

  30. I am trying to figure out from which angle you approached the Rice campus. It is surrounded on three sides by the West U neighborhood which is quite nice with large homes with old growth trees and well manicured lawns. On the fourth side are museums and the medical center. The MC has a lot of congestion with all of the buildings, so maybe that turned you off. Enter the campus from Main street and be prepared to be very impressed. Now, for full disclosure, I have lived in Houston for quite some time, but was born in Dallas (East Oak Cliff) Shout out to Cadillac Heights! So, you won't see me joining in on the Houston vs Dallas skirmishes. But, maybe you could give Rice one more chance. As for UH, I can't disagree.

  32. Denton business might support UNT, but I don't think the average Denton citizen cares much about supporting UNT athletics. And I don't think that's a result of UNT not "willing to embrace Denton" (whatever that means). I just think it's because UNT athletics have mostly sucked the past 40 years.

  33. I think I'll agree that on the whole, the City of Denton is not vocal about UNT support. BUT if you go to several restaurants in town, both local and chain, there's tons of support. Restaurants around the square, and around Industrial have gear and calendars on the walls. Chicken Express, heck even McAlister's on the Loop. Lot's of businesses do a deal that if you wear green on Friday you get a discount. It would be nice to see the square decorated in green every once in a while, though. TCU has purple street signs (I think with the frog?) as you get closer to campus.

  35. Some of the better comments for the bulletin board from SMU's board... "2007 was a win for Bennet, but it was also his only win of the whole season. The Safeway Bowl is currently at 28–5–1, not that I endorse it as a series. I see it more as the canary in the coal mine. 11 more games scheduled, need to get this to 39-5-1." "Agreed, never again will we let that commuter school beat us." "I like how everyone is assuming UNT is a win. I hope it is but I dont put them in the auto win collumn until next year" "We lost to UNT last year by ~40 points, yet everyone on here has that down as a win. While our crop of freshman is better than the seniors they replace, they are still freshman and will struggle. " "The coach who shall not be named was probably a huge reason as to why we lost to NTSU last year. He had clearly mailed it in and the team fed off his lack of energy & commitment, and that stupid offense he ran." "I agree with those who are concerned about UNT game and think it may very well be the key to our season. Most of us expect to be trounced again by Baylor, but beating UNT after getting drubbed by them last year would go a long ways towards building some confidence. Lose to them at Ford and we are going to find out what our guys are made of (and how many might be run off at season's end). For these guys to win as many as 4 games, I see UNT as a "must win" game" "My pride will simply not let me consider losing to NTSU 2 years in a row....especially in our house."

  36. "Sleeping giant" Give me an F'n break. What we are is a slumbering drawf, and will remain that way until the President and the BOR get serious about athletocs and hire an AD that is a difference maker. RV has been here 14 freaking years and has advanced the needle a millimeter. But hey, he is a nice guy, so the good old boy system keeps him around. If they do it after a miserable football and basketball season this year, I'm out, as should EVERY supporter of UNT athletocs. Then, just maybe, the president and the BOR would open their eyes to the terrible job performance of this AD over the last 14 years.

  37. They better count for something otherwise the 1000+ four year schools engaging in athletics that aren't in the 10-20 making a profit need to rethink their spending. I think you have to look at the big picture. There was a guy in Sherwood, Arkansas who had a pretty good Cajun restaurant. Food was great, sevice sucked, and nothing ruined a nice night out worse than him stopping by the table to whine. He once went on rant about the various taxes and fees he had to pay to have a business and he could be profitable but for the taxes and fees. Well he could have been profitable if the owner of the building lowered the rent or let him use the place for free. If his suppliers charged less or gave him his sacks of rice and shrimp for free, he would have made money hand over fist. If people came in and volunteered to cook, bus tables, wash dishes, and take orders for free he would have made big bucks. This is reality. You don't "lose" money on softball or volleyball. NCAA rules say that if you want to play FBS football you must sponsor 16 sports and award at least 200 rides. None revenue sports are a cost of FBS football just the same as buying helmets and pads. The law says if you offer educational opportunities, you must offer them to women as well. Sponsoring enough women's sports to play FBS football is part of the cost of football. The NCAA recently lost a lawsuit (it is pending appeal) where the judge ruled that the NCAA cannot conspire to pay students anything less than full cost of attendance. If a school chooses to not offer it, that is the business of the school but the NCAA is barred from preventing schools from paying full cost. Does not matter whether you think it is fair for players to have spending money, the bottom line is the NCAA can't prevent it and if schools choose to do so, anyone they compete against for talent is at a disadvantage. If the Texas schools in CUSA opted to not pay that is fine, If UT does it, that's not going to hurt UNT, but if Texas State, Houston, and SMU opt to pay, then you either pay or live with the disadvantage. FCOA is a cost of business like paying the electric bill or the rent.

  38. Here's a smart dad right here. A suggestion. If you haven't already, purchase one of the countless brands of toy tee ball and bat sets and make up games for her to hit..(ie....can you hit one past that tree/swing set/whatever object is there). When she does this consistently , turn her around, switch her hands on the bat and challenge her to do it again from the other side. Switch hitting is a simple thing to learn if taught early. Graduate to larger tee ball sets and remember to make a game of it,..not work. Also, play catch with just hands for now of course, but teach her to step with the proper foot and correct her EVERYTIME and reward with excitement when she does it. Yeah she's two. But if they're walking and playing, then they're old enough to learn these three things.. Baseball and the skills to play it is THE most difficult sport to teach a child. Get your youngun doing these three things now,...hitting, catching and throwing with the proper step and it will blow your mind how much further along she will be when tee ball starts. Finally I'd say if she picks this up early go ahead and teach her to pitch the ball underhand and the steps taken to do this. I'd go with the reverse K with no step at first and go from there. Pitching underhand is actually easier than throwing overhand but feels strange at first doing it. Good of luck to you. I hope it's as rewarding to you as it was for me. Rick

  40. I'm sorry, but getting killed by 40 pts at Apogee isn't going to change anyone's mind about UNT. This is what would happen, casual UNT alum/fan sees OU is coming to Apogee and thinks, "Oh, that's really cool! UNT is hosting OU at Apogee, I might go!" But when OU fans buy up most of the tickets and the secondary market prices go up to $60-$80 most of our fans don't think it's worth it because they can watch it on TV for free. On a positive note, we do finally sellout Apogee...with the help of about 12K to 15K OU fans. Once the game starts we put up a good fight for 1 or 2 quarters before OU kicks our heads in during the 2nd half. By the 4th quarter most of the fans left are cheering for OU, with "Boomer Sooner" chants echoing throughout Apogee. You're right, that sounds like a sure fire way to build credibility with alumni and casual fans...

  42. "I say we win by about 35 or so and then they can fire their coach after the game..." Hahahahaha! I'm sorry, but that is a bold statement. Especially coming from a 1-11 record last year and getting their clock cleaned in Denton. I think I see some bad taste in their mouth about us causing their coach to run out with his tail in between his legs last year. I hate SMU fans, because of crap like this flowing out of their mouths

  43. Until we run an offense that Texas HS kids want to play in that are taller than 6'0", we are going to have to go the JUCO route for QBs. Its just that simple. We run an offense that Woody Hayes would have run in the 60's and 70's. The high majority of Texas HS kids play in spread offenses. Their coaches think its more fun for the kids--they think Mac's offense is boring. Obviously, by the results we have seen since Mac got here, so do the HS QBs from this state. Mac's starters have been Derek Thompson, who was already here, MiniMac, who he got from Iowa because he knows his dad, Greer, who came from the juco ranks and cannot play at this level, and Dajon, who was run off for multipple reasons and didn't have another FBS offer, IIRC. And if Damarcus Smith cannot come in here and win this job against this bunch this year, that will be just pathetic. And then we will start all over again trying to find another JUCO QB to come here and hope to take the reins of the busdriver offense, this time with a different OC, since Chico will probably be gone after this season ends.
