Jamario had a great run at North Texas, even with the injuries. You are right. If he would have been able to stay healthy, he might have finished with over 6,000 yards. Thomas has the honor of being one of only three players to ever produce 5 consecutive 200 yards games. Marcus Allen and Barry Sanders are the other two. Not bad company.

So you don't want those who are directly and most obviously profiteering on the backs of the athletes to be the ones to pay for it? That would be like the NFL asking communities to pay for stadiums that they use and profit from at little to no cost to themselves while they get to keep all the revenues generated.

The lowest-attended 2013 game--Ball State on 9/14--was a real head scratcher for me. I looked forward to that game more than any other on the schedule that year except Rice, and IMO, it was the most exciting game played at Apogee that year. I have seldom seen so many big hits from the UNT defense, and I mean EVER. They physically whipped Ball State, and I just wish that there had been more people there to see it. I believe the heat really put a damper on attendance. It sure made the Cardinals finally quit.

Hello Mean Green fans! I have good news for Mean Green fans in the North Dallas metro area! I have set up a new restaurant / bar to feature away North Texas game watching events here in the Lower Greenville area. The good folks at the Yucatan Taco Stand on lower Greenville Ave have agreed to show the Mean Green away games this season. The Yucatan will feature drink and food specials just for the Mean Green fans on Game Day. I need to get a idea on how many Mean Green fans can come to the Yucatan to watch our away games. I don't think I've ever posted this story on the board before. Jamario's balance was INCREDIBLE. He made the most athletic play I have ever seen in person, and I don't think the crowd even noticed it because the elevated angle (and traffic around the play) made it impossible to see. The team is at midfield, Jamario takes a handoff going left, the defense blitzes in that direction, he sees the hole to the right and makes a cut. And slips on the eagle logo at midfield... So he is skating on one leg, the other leg is throw out in front of him. On the leg that he is planted, his knee is bent back past 45 degrees, his upper leg and body are close to parallel to the ground. 99.999% of people on earth fall flat on their butt at this point. But not Jamario. He had the balance (and core/lower body strength) to right himself. That by itself is enough to be the most amazing athletic feat I have ever seen. Then, as he is almost fully righted, the blitzing CB gets to him. Instead of wrapping Jamario up he tries to sportscenter (dun dun dun dadadundun) blow him up and launches himself full speed into Jamario's upper body. Now think about that impact, Jamario is more or less at dead even momentum. He is just barely getting righted so he can run again. The CB had at least ten yards to run full speed and launch himself shoulder first into Jamario's upper body. Again, 99.999% of people just fall down. Again, Jamario just takes the impact, gets blasted back a few feet (all the while churning his feet to keep his balance) and then sprints around the tackle for a 10 yd gain. From the stands, I don't think the fans could see how close he came to falling. Everyone on the field was amazed. I turned to the photographer next to me and asked him if he had just seen that (using more colorful language), he just sat their open mouthed and shook his head with amazement.

They better count for something otherwise the 1000+ four year schools engaging in athletics that aren't in the 10-20 making a profit need to rethink their spending. I think you have to look at the big picture. There was a guy in Sherwood, Arkansas who had a pretty good Cajun restaurant. Food was great, sevice sucked, and nothing ruined a nice night out worse than him stopping by the table to whine. He once went on rant about the various taxes and fees he had to pay to have a business and he could be profitable but for the taxes and fees. Well he could have been profitable if the owner of the building lowered the rent or let him use the place for free. If his suppliers charged less or gave him his sacks of rice and shrimp for free, he would have made money hand over fist. If people came in and volunteered to cook, bus tables, wash dishes, and take orders for free he would have made big bucks. This is reality. You don't "lose" money on softball or volleyball. NCAA rules say that if you want to play FBS football you must sponsor 16 sports and award at least 200 rides. None revenue sports are a cost of FBS football just the same as buying helmets and pads. The law says if you offer educational opportunities, you must offer them to women as well. Sponsoring enough women's sports to play FBS football is part of the cost of football. The NCAA recently lost a lawsuit (it is pending appeal) where the judge ruled that the NCAA cannot conspire to pay students anything less than full cost of attendance. If a school chooses to not offer it, that is the business of the school but the NCAA is barred from preventing schools from paying full cost. Does not matter whether you think it is fair for players to have spending money, the bottom line is the NCAA can't prevent it and if schools choose to do so, anyone they compete against for talent is at a disadvantage. If the Texas schools in CUSA opted to not pay that is fine, If UT does it, that's not going to hurt UNT, but if Texas State, Houston, and SMU opt to pay, then you either pay or live with the disadvantage. FCOA is a cost of business like paying the electric bill or the rent.

What makes a great college town? I always find it odd that these things still rate selection of bars for a population that has theoretically been required to be 21 years old for the past thirty years. Is it the university logo all over town? The mayor cutting ribbons at school construction projects? The kiwanis club contributing scholarships? The panty raids at walmart? I'm asking honestly. I definitely did not go to school in a "college town." We all fled to the beach six miles away and pretty much ignored the campus and surrounding area when not in class. The joke back then was that (Our school name) would be a great addition to (the city name) if only it weren't for all those pesky students. The very master planned community residing within city limits was very, very much NOT in favor of a bunch of unwashed masses lurking about with backpacks in hand.

It is a shame, because UNT probably has the most beautiful campus in Texas. (I have been to UT, A&M, and Baylor's campus). They should have included a pic of the campus on there. Denton is weird, it isn't a town running strictly on college life like you see somewhere that would be a no name town without the college. I do think the city struggles at community support for UNT, and I wish TWU would just conjoin with UNT, because it divides the city from UNT support. But Denton definitely deserves to be up there with the top college cities.

There was rain in the area but not in Denton. The biggest problem that night was the Rangers playing in Game 2 of the World Series.

I think the greatest RB I ever saw at North Texas was a healthy Jamario Thomas, Lance ended up having a better career, but I think if Jamario could have stayed healthy he would have ended up with over 6000 yards. Ja'Quay was a great back, but I don't think he had the top gear that Lance, Jamario or Patrick Cobbs did have.

The problem is that they are locked in to the university and cannot pursue employment. Sure, in theory, they have a limited window in which to work in the summer. The problem there is us. We expect them to be in summer workouts trying to become better players, not attempting to have a little spending money. To compound that, they don't compete well with other college students who can have more flexible schedules and can stay in the position once school starts. You had a big difference in college. You could choose to transfer at any time with no penalty. You could work outside of your studies. You could decide to take fewer hours for a year or two to work more. You could earn spending money to go out to a movie or go on a date. These players don't have any of those options or freedoms. Personally, given the personal attacks and pressure on these kids should be worth compensation on its' own. We sit here behind our keyboards and nail these guys for lack of effort, ability, and whatever else we deem needs harsh criticism. Don't make the grades because you were focusing on football? You must be stupid or something. Don't satisfy us with your performance on the field because you were focused on academics? You are a terrible player and should be benched. I wish we would stop calling them scholarships. These players are heavily steered towards easy degrees and academics are de-emphasized. We don't set up athletes well for success after college. They don't get degrees (for the most part) that will allow them to get good jobs out of school. There is little that is scholarly about what they are here to do.

The 2013 game vs Ball St was a great game and IMO the best game of Derek Thompsons career. You missed a treat. Laramie Lee put on a safety clinic that game in the 2nd half.

I enjoy the UNT campus as well but there is no way you can put it above the Rice campus and dare I say SMU.

Let's not go off the deep end. If you could've told the fanbase 14 years ago that over the next 14 years you will have 5 bowl appearances with 2 victories, 4 conference titles. 2 NCAA tournament appearances(don't know how many basketball conference titles or 20 win seasons), have one basketball coach stolen by UT and another by LSU, a new stadium, new practice facility, a better conference, new athletic center, a new softball field and a new soccer field,, I think most fans would've jumped at the chance. How much did NT advance in the 14 years prior to RV? I wasn't around so I don't know. or the lack of a distributor

Ryan and I both are incensed whenever we see the tired refrain of "Denton hates UNT and would never support football!!" on here, when we have seen the exact opposite from Denton businesses and culture for nearly the whole time we've been here. So, sarcasm comes easy whenever an example comes up.

I recently visited Knowhuddle.com to find the area NT most needed to improve that would have the greatest correlation to winning and you've identified the top 2 I found.. #1 - Yards per point differential = 69% correlation w/ winning percentage #2 - Offensive Explosiveness = 63% correlation w/ winning percentage I am hopeful that our coaching staff has talent enough at the play making positions offensively and in the defensive secondary that should allow them to scheme a greater explosiveness differential in 2015.

As I recall, I said a few weeks ago if we wanted to sell out games we needed to embrace Denton culture. People heavily disagreed on here. Pan Ector, now this... ...but that's none of my business.

I'm excited to see Andy Flusche as a starting DE. Did anyone else happen to notice how explosive and disruptive he looked in the Spring Game? He and Blake Bean really gave me some hope for an improved run defense.

Well as a fan that lives 1000 miles away from Denton now, I cant even tell you how much it means to me to be able to watch my beloved Mean Green on TV. But aside from my selfish reasons, I would think having televised games has a positive impact on recruiting... which leads to more wins... which leads to better attendance.

I don't think being afraid to lose is a legitimate reason not to play them. I think a series with TxState would be a great benefit for both teams.

I understand your semantics try here, but even so, I spent money buying a hat at the coach's caravan. I won free tickets to a basketball game, and I expect to spend money on some sweet ass pretzels and coke while at the game. Anyway, the publicity, exposure, and name recognition is what makes it really easy for folks shell out money for a jersey that says "College University Football", or buy season tickets, or donate money. Example, when I go look for a North Texas football jersey at Target, what am I going to find? A jersey with the number 9 on it. Previously, you could find a jersey with the number 3, or the number 5. Even onesies with those numbers. The players, (Harris, Chancellor, Dunbar, if you didn't catch that), are creating brand recognition that becomes revenue for their institution.

Honestly, I think as long as they stay within reasonable amounts, the choice was going to have to be to either provide stipends or give them the option to work part-time jobs. I think a lot of people look at it as, "Oh, they have school paid for, what else do they need?" and leave out the fact that some of them live off campus (and not always by choice, depending upon the housing situation in a given semester), have no meal plan (at least for certain days/meals) and then of course some of the lesser factors always mentioned in the articles about this. What it boils down to is that, with every school having different policies, and athletes having different living situations (and many not having families able/willing to help out with cost of living), you're going to have to let them get a job during the season or pay costs of living. If not, whether or not *we* agree with it, there's a good chance the school or athletic department could have been held liable for someone going hungry and having health problems related to that, or any number of other possible outcomes that could pop up due to someone not being able to afford the basic necessities. And yeah, I know, "tough times make tough people," or "make you appreciate life more later," but forcing someone to choose whether to accept tough times in return for a football scholarship has a LOT of other peripheral factors that come into play, and since our draft drought is an indicator of how unlikely it is that this will pay dividends in the future, we need to make sure that our guys, whose scholarships are in return for 1) entertainment and 2) some extra publicity, are able to eat and pay rent.
