  2. I had a meeting today with a client's son who is the head football coach at a local high school in Frisco, so we got to talking about football and colleges that recruit their players. He mentioned that the school's QB got offered a full scholarship a couple of years ago after his freshman year to Clemson--a guy you may have heard of, Chad Morris was the OC at Clemson back then. For obvious reasons, an SMU offer is now being looked at. So that led me to ask him about UNT and Coach Mac. The dad said something really good, but also vey telling--he said, the UNT coaches are visible and they are very engaged, but the only kids that have any interest in looking at them on offense are the linemen. He said his son and the coaches like McCarney personally, but the only skill kids that have any interest in playing in Denton are those who run non-spread offenses, of which there was one in their district. He said it will always be tough to convince kids to play in an offense like that because coaches and players today think its just flat out boring. I told him that the fans think its boring, too, unless the defense and special teams make up for it. Granted, this is one coach's view in the Metroplex, so you can take it for what it is worth, but it basically confirmed a big part of what we have thought about our QB issues--we can't get decent QBs here that can turn into something, in part because they won't come here, or because they won't get the chance to be developed into anything other than the busdriver. We just gotta pray that Mac's strength of developing linemen and solid hard-hitting defenses will show up in the upcoming years. Otheriwse, the next three years are going to be a lot like the other years around here for the last 10 years, sans 2013.

  4. My wife is an Ohio State alum along with most of her family. I try my best to be a fan for her sake but frankly it's like rooting for the Death Star. So I put on a good face but secretly I hate them.

  5. For college? No. I went to UNT, so that's what I support. I cannot wrap my head around being a fan of multiple universities unless you went to multiple universities.

  6. I only cheer for the Mean Green. Anytime a G5 plays a P5 I do pull for the G5 school to win, unless that G5 is SMU, in which case I hope that they lose by 70.

  7. So basically nothing has changed on the board or in UNT fandom in general in the last 14+ years... ...and people say we don't have traditions!

  8. Hard to convince players to come play it? Hell... Try convincing people to come ( or come back and) watch it.

  10. I also very much dislike players that don't want to finish out their careers playing in front of empty arenas for a garbage coach. WTF are we supposed to do?

  11. Always liked Georgia and Michign growing up. My love of the constant ball kicks that are UNT sports have really pretty much ruined all other college sports for me though.... It just makes me angry seeing others not always suck.

  14. Very good news. Hopefully he's our team's guy. I hope he has an o-line too. On a side note, I don't know if Mac thinks a lot before he speaks. Speaking about how behind a player is instead of expecting great things out of him is not a great way to motivate. It gives the appearance of playing favorites and at the end of the day its bad leadership. Publicly he should have spoke about how talented he is, what a great recruit he is, the great news of his eligibility and privately he should have spoken to the player about expectations and goals. That's just me though...

  15. People have different priorities in life and using a vacation day to go to a football game may not be a high one for some. Just because it is something that you want to do doesn't mean you should judge others for felling differently. We should not be in the habit of shaming other fans for making those kinds of choices, we need every fan we can get.

  17. From Vito's blog: If that's 100% true along with his JUCO coach staying he's 6'11" then he should be a very good get.

  20. I don't know about that, in 2002 we only had 5 home games, and one of those was a terrible 1AA team. 14 years later we only have 5 home games, and one of these is a terrible FCS team.

  23. You could also flip that around and say that he is using it to motivate DS by reminding him of how he put himself behind by failing to take care of business in the classroom, and that he will have to work overtime to catch up. Part of leadership is to put your key people under a little stress and see if they focus, or fold.

  24. Root For: IOWA - Father, two brothers, wife and I all graduated from Iowa. I've been looking forward to the Mean Green game at Kinnick Stadium for a long time! OU & Northwestern: Daughter is an alumnus of both. Root Against: The Ohio State, Michigan and SMU

  25. I'll root for most G5 teams, except $mut. I do like to see the American Airlines Conference fail though. I root for TCU because my mom is an alumni, but I wouldn't cheer for them against NT I root for Marshall because my dad is from the same town, but once again, I would not cheer for them against NT I actually hate $mut, but still have to mention it. I hate Ohio State because they are just like texas college. I think the world would be a better place if tu ceased to exist. OH, and I like pie...and tacos.

  26. I see little comparison between the two athletes's situation. One was a star softball player and the other a potential QB for the Green. I see the softball situation just the opposite from Vito, it is a lot muddier. Athletes seek greener pastures all the time on their own or urged/forced by their coach. Williams was not going to play much and he is gone, happens everywhere. The softball situation is a lot different, Schoblocher was the star of the team and would have been no doubt the featured player her senior year. She is also at this point not transferring, she is just not going to play. There is also the small detail that rumors persist that the softball problem involves many more players. Making the tale even more complex as mentioned in Vito's older blog that Schoblocher's issues concern the assistant hitting coach. This is strange because Schoblocher just had one of the best years in NT history at the plate and showed amazing gains.

  27. Unbelievable, a lot of you chastise a player for opting to go somewhere else and at the same time continually knock Benford and the program. I don't see how you can think both, partially when he is apparently going to a school much higher on the bb food chain. My view is I doubt he would have made much difference at NT anyway. Most of the touted transfer players Benford has pulled in have been mediocre at best and the centers have been much worse than that. I like the guy they just signed as much as Kouassi.

  28. Followed Arkansas as a youngster because of my family. I also liked Ohio State way back when Schlitster (sp?) was their QB. Loved watching him but his gambling problems and Woodie Hayes ended all of that. Their recent AD's comments about the G5 schools solidifies my hatred of them. Only follow NT now. Hate SMU because they are SMU. I also hate UT because of all their t-shirt fans that love them yet never took one class there. My hatred also stems from their arrogance towards everyone else and predicting A&M's failure in the SEC. Love how the Aggies have proven them wrong.

  29. P5 root for: Tech (wife is an alum); A&M (dad went to fire school there) G5 root for: none really (I guess maybe Tx State since I live fairly close and they are similarly situated to us) P5 root against: I hate the Longhorns because I live in Austin and these people are delusional about how great they are G5 root against: I HATE all things SMU and hope they lose to every team on their schedule until the end of time AND I wish them gristle and over or undercooked meat at each gameday "boulevard". I also hope that Abercrombie runs out of pink polos for their punk-ass fans to wear and hope that their sockless loafers rub blisters on their feet. F 'em!

  30. Im at Louisville so i root for the Cards. I always loved Duke so i guess I root for the Blue Devils as well. outside of that, I am rarely cheering on another team. I have never spent a dime in support of anyone else but UNT though for what it's worth.

  31. So, if I'm not able to get that day off, provided my schedule doesn't change with maybe a week's notice, and drive down 6 hours, and then potentially drive 6 hours back to possibly work the next day, is that a weak ass excuse?

  35. UNT head & shoulders above the rest. I will root for any Texas team in a bowl game. Follow Austin College because I've lived near there my whole life & my son played basketball for the 'Roos.

  36. If our coaching staff doesn't know about this kid yet then we have a lot bigger issues with recruiting than just needing to tip them off about him. I believe he's the leading returning rusher in the area.

  37. I've got an extensive rooting hierarchy that goes like this: 1. UNT 2. Texas 3. UH/Rice 4. Any Texas school not named SMU. 5. Mississippi State 6. The Underdog 7. Anyone playing Notre Dame This effectively covers almost every match-up, allowing me to be somewhat invested in almost anything happening in college football. The level of emotional investment, however, declines exponentially the further down the list I go.

  40. You have judged their reason for not attending as "weak ass". Week nights are inconvenient for people with a family and other obligations and to call them out based on your interpretation of their motivations for not spending 4+ hours (including travel, etc.) on a week night on a football game is a problem.

  44. Good luck to Williams where ever he lands. I always wanted him to be tried at another position. However, it is not like NT lost a key member of the team; because he was not. He was not heavily recruited out of HS, like most NT recruits and apparently he didn't do the things off the field that Mac requires. He did look like the best QB in the spring game and I was hopeful that he would be able to contribute. Mac is a coach and there are many like him that reward work off the field as much as on field performance. I think they miss out on a particular gamer type of player, who ratchet it up at game time. However, obviously the argument can be made, that despite some game time plusses with this type player, their value is outweighed by the effect of rewarding a player with game time that is not dedicated to practice and the effect that has on the rest of the team. Williams looks like "all world" against the completely outclassed by everybody Nicholls State, looked less than average against Indiana and looked about as bad as a QB can against UAB. Coaches bend their rules for star players all the time, but Williams was judged not to be that quality.

  45. Coaches want to win. Their job depends on it... (Some might argue not at UNT). So either their 100's of hours of of evaluating Dajon proves they just can't see true football genius when it is right in front of them or maybe the fans jumped the gun a bit on proclaiming him the second coming. I think Dajon was given every opportunity to show he was the best man for the job. No one owes you anything. You either put in the work and take what is yours or you don't.
