  1. Student fees are so small time. The onus of supporting an athletic department should be on alumni, conference media revenue, ticket revenue and apparel/licensing. How much was the student fee when DallasGreen was in school? Schools that don't have a student athletic fee: Texas Oklahoma Kansas State Alabama Arkansas Kentucky LSU Missouri Texas A&M Nebraska Penn State Ohio State Michigan Purdue BYU Central Michigan Western Michigan Louisiana - Lafayette Hawaii Louisiana Tech

  2. Hi Guys, I just wanted to provide a brief first hand account of the induction of Hayden Fry into the SMU Hall of Fame last night. I am pleased to report that there were no less than ten North Texas alumni, former players, and staff on hand to represent the Mean Green in celebrating Coach Fry's amazing 40+ years in Football. We made our presence known as we proudly displayed the Flying Worm on our jackets, and loudly cheered for the former NTSU coaching great. Even 3x Pro Bowler Jerry Ball took notice. He asked me after the ceremony, "What's with all the green stuff??" The highlight of the evening had to have been the opportunity to present both Coach Fry and Coach McCarney, who was also there to cheer on his mentor, with one of the lime green lapel pins that we had custom made for the event. Hayden is still as humorous an ornery as ever. The entire Fry family was very very nice, and all of the assembled Ponies were extremely gracious in welcoming a group of Eagles into their stable. It was a great night all around! Go Mean Green!! This post has been promoted to an article

  9. If you have kids (or if you're like me and ARE a kid), you might wanna hit a local comic shop today! Free comics for everyone! This has been going on for about 10 years or so. Companies print a ton of comics available at-cost to retailers, who buy cases and cases as a promotional deal and give them away. It's a way to try to get people excited about comics again, and it's a lot of fun, because many places have other cool games and events going on in conjunction with the giveaway. I know Denton has at least 2 stores still - Madness and whatever the one on the Square is called. I'll be in Tucson doing free sketches and signing copies of my own comic. KRAM1 donated to my Indiegogo and has a signed copy already! If any of you have friends in Tucson, send them to Charlie's Comics on Speedway Blvd. and I'll give them a free sketch of whatever they want!

  14. I don't care about FIU's campus. At all. What I care about is football games with a hundred people in the stands. Losing to FCS schools. Playing in a glorified soccer stadium with no proper media booth. They have shown even less of a commitment to FBS athletics than we have, something I thought was near impossible. They belong in the Sun Belt at best.

  15. I just attended a President's Scholar's Luncheon at the Omni in Dallas for UNT-D that was sold out! The problem is obvious and it is and has always been little "d" . This artsy, fartsy community is sooooo different from the rest of the metroplex. The obvious is the more backward it tries to stay the more the shock of the growth North in the next decade is going to hit it between the eyes. UNT and it's admins, alums, etc. as well as the ignorant Denton townsfolk will ultimately be bailed out by location no matter how hard they try to screw up things!!

  16. I'm a MWC guy, for sure, but only because it is playing teams way above what CUSA offers. If TCU could go out west and turn it into a huge success, I think we could, as well. Boise, AFA, SDSU, Fresno State, Nevada, and Colorado State are better than any CUSA opponent, including the Texas teams and La Tech. The MWC is a huge stepup from CUSA, in my opinion. Meanwhile, I think that the MAC and CUSA are equals. The SBC is below them, while the AAC and MWC are above them. And, as far as being in the MWC, if it was with UTEP, UTSA, RIce, and ourselves, I think we would immediately have stepped up big time. But what I truthfully expect to happen is that the unreasonable expenses related to AAC travel will catch up to that league, especially when UConn and Cincy eventually leave for P5 pastures, is that the MWC will target UH, SMU, UTEP, and UTSA to go west.

  17. What QB in their right mind is gonna come here to play in this offense? Doesn't matter who the OC is if the head coach says that the offense will be a run-first, run-second, run-last mindset. McDickney's offense never has gotten a big time throwing QB in here. Only Dodge's spread offense got us Vizza, but the lack of an OL and a real college gameplan got him beaten so bad that he quit after one year. Your only QBs that have had any "success" have been busdrivers with tremendous defenses and outstanding special teams. Scott Hall, Andrew Smith, and Derek Thompson had moments of success here for longer than a few games, but the rest have not. Chico isn't that great of an OC to me, but him trying to recruit anyone here in 2015 when we run an offense that ran out of vogue in 1975 is almost impossible. McCarney is going to have to adjust his offensive mindset, just like Gary Patterson did last year for TCU if we ever want to get in on decent G5 offensive talent. Otherwise, we have at least three more years that look a lot like the majority of the last 10 years.

  18. That makes sense if the conference courting you can't money-whip you, or otherwise make it worth your while to leave. Many here are anti-MWC, but if UNT were offered, and the deal provided a nice bump in money, who would say 'no'? I'm not keen on the MAC's TV deal & other income sources, but I can't see it being bigger than C-USA's. Money talks, my friend.

  19. Why would any team in Ohio balk? WKU, MT, Marshall are all just as close as many of their current conference mates. NIU's travel costs would not be much different than they are now simply because they can fly out of OHare to other major airports in C-USA West. There's Army. Re-approach any of the former C-USA teams who left for the AAC. New Mexico, COSt, some other MWC team may want to move away from the West Coast? Worst they can say is no. Again, IF C-USA is to expand, exhaust your resources. Put in some effort. Don't just hit your SBC speed-dial and take candy from a baby.

  20. Edit: Looking at their schedule, they have six home games and host Kansas State and Colorado State in nonconference games. I promise you that if we fully utilize Marcus Smith, he will be the all-conference tight end and not Morgan from nUTSAck.

  21. Any of you who are calmoring for old SBC friends: I bet you don't take many chances in life, huh? Any SBC school is already in the pocket of C-USA. We need only extend an offer. IF C-USA is to expand, why not try other schools first before settling on what we already have in our pockets?

  22. Yeah, where are the RV lobbyists? Who on here even wants the man here anyone? It's infuriating watching the same thing take place over & over. Same coach speak of getting better, same AD talk of potential, same apathetic fans supporting from their houses on Saturdays. Pitiful donor numbers and let's not even get started on scheduling and the basketball squad. Our AD, for the most part, has done a piss poor job. He keeps his job bc of the amount of apathy infused into our culture in athletics and as a university. It's truly borderline pathetic.

  23. 35-85 in the last 10 years with only 1 winning season and postseason appearance. And yet, somehow, the AD that has presided over this still has a job. That's the real decade of silence.

  27. If it wasn't so bad, why would he delete his release statement from his IG. Why would he also delete the IG picture of him supporting the riots and looting in Baltimore? Hope MT the best of luck, I hope he does well and can get another opportunity but sometimes you have to be a professional and move on.. Stop complaining about the "lack of performance" excuse, honestly they dont need a reason. Be an adult, say thank you for the opportunity and move on.

  28. If there was a list of things that impact a recruit's decision, I imagine this is near the bottom. I'd put it way below a program's winning/losing trend and opportunity to play, and somewhere right around a new and exciting (or ugly, depending on your taste) uniform.

  30. I heard she told the coaching staff @ UWV that she would rather be playing in Denton because North Texas is a vastly superior school, or something like that.
    1 point
  31. Ok then. Has Baylor University historically suffered with the same culture that North Texas has,(for decades), suffered with trying to overcome? Or more to the point, even recognize? Whenever coach Dickey and Coach Mac mention/talk about this being a hard place to recruit to, in my mind they are talking about that very thing. Without going into a long diatribe (like I usually do) let me paraphrase an old saying. Baylor may have been, for decades, the "Red Headed Step Child" of the old SWC/B-12, but they were at least part of a very respected family. We haven't been part of any sort of respected sports "family" in like.....never. But to make it even worse, our sports programs, but in particular Football, have been the "Red Headed Step Children of our University"! And until such time as we get around to changing that fundamental thing about OUR CULTURE, all current and future coaches will continue to say the same thing......and they will be right. AND, once again, It is not the job of our head coach to change our University's culture. Looks like I did a diatribe anyway........sorry............

  36. as chronicled in the above post and by Mean Green Matt (), the Mean Green soccer team clinched sole possession of North Texas' first CUSA championship. 37. LaTech's athletic department directly receives state funds. We do not. So how do we compete--by chopping off a necessary revenue source that other schools at our level need to have a chance?

  38. So roughly 15% of FBS programs don't have student fees? If so, then why would we not have a student fee and take full advantage of trying to get a leg up. Over half of those programs you just named are blue bloods and a student fee to them is absolute dirt money. A doubled student fee at UNT could do a lot for our athletic department b/c alum that majored in saxophone jazz in college doesn't have the budget or could care less to budget a donation to the UNT athletic program. Apples and oranges, and we're whichever is the poorest out of the 2. We need all the dimes and nickels we can get funneled into this program and any other opinion is flat out ignorance or stubborn stupidity.

  41. The NFL is indeed almost unbearable to watch. I'll flip on a cowboy game from time to time, but that's about it. There's no real passion, there's no real sense of team and there is sure as hell no loyalty. I don't get it.

  43. The truth hurts and UNT fans cannot handle the truth. This 10 year draft drought is almost as bad us not being able to win back to back games for 8 seasons (I forgot the stat but its something like that), does talent have something to do with that? How about UNT only having 1 winning season in 10 years, could that have something to do with it? Starts from the top and works it way down. AD cant hire the right head coach, thus the wrong HC cant hire good assistants, resulting into the coaches not being able to recruit and develop talent. McCarney will have zero players drafted/ playing in the NFL, while Dodge currently has 3 players playing. Edit: Craig is not one of the 3, he was a Dickey boy; Olawale, Orr, Dunbar

  44. Actually, I'd take three tams from the SBC to replace UAB: Arkansas State, ULL, and Georgia Southern. I would then see how that goes from a competitive standpoint. The East would have ODU, Marshall, WKU, MUTS, FIU, FAU, Charlotte, and Ga Southern. The west woul be UNT, Arky State, La Tech, ULL, USM, Rice, UTEP, and UTSA. Play seven division games, two non-division games, and then three OOC games.

  45. Dickey might have killed for them, but none of it even remotely happens without Dodge being here. Dickey's persona was horrible to fans and the media--plain, boring, generic, etc...Todd Dodge came here with a flashy record in Texas HS Football and a promise from the admininstration--that he reminded the media about often--that new facilities were coming. Obviously, that was proven to be a stretch until UNTFlyer took over and made it happen thru the SGA. Coach Mac has been refreshing and positive, up until the losing got to him in the middle of last year. I've posted it before and I will again. I completely believe that Mac saw this place as a USF or UCF starter-kit, that talent abounded around him and that we were a huge school in need of a leader to bring them up from the doldrums. He never imagined that recruiting here would still be this hard, especially after winning the HoD Bowl in 2013. BUt the history of apathy and losing has been too much for McCarney to get over, at least so far. So the Dickey-like quotes started popping up late last year. People want to blame Mac for being negative, but they forget that for his first three-plus seasons, all he did in public or with the media was act like a motivational speaker about this place. The real question is whether the negativity has set in for good now or if the positive and motivational Mac will show back up here--because the latter is what is badly needed here, just to convince a few of the newbies that are in school or just graduated to stick around and feel good about this place still, not to mention the very few alums from the lost decades that might be willing to come back around if they feel like they have someone and something worth following, maybe even for the first time ever in some cases.
