  1. Can I play this game too? On another note I don't know why the DRC didn't make a slideshow of the Spring Game but I do apologize.

  2. The buzz comes from the lack of snaps people have seen him play which adds to the hope that he could develop into something special. At this point fans are willing to latch onto anybody, but Greer or McNulty. I think some of the buzz also stemmed from last years spring game where he showed some good moxy in the pocket. His tools are raw. He gives you rare glimpses of potential. Good size. I honestly believe he has the best escape-ability out of all the QBs. Just has a knack of being able to elude a rush. The ceiling seems higher for Means than Greer or McNulty thats why people are high on him.

  3. Yep...you know, KRAM, the guy who will actually be there to see you play...unlike UNT90 who just talks. You'll never see UNT90, but he'll have plenty of excuses and will be "supporting you from afar". I just know you will feel the love.

  8. It could be low when compared with all of FBS, but you have no way to actually know that. I would guess that it is comparable to other teams in our situation, bad season with a lot of options at QB. I don't really see how you can conclude that the opinions of fans is any indication of the situation. I really don't think that a coach should use the opinions of fans to determine the starter at any position.

  10. Never said he was not a huge loss. And I am not a DT hater, I appreciate what he did. I just will argue that the defense and special teams deserved more credit for our overall record in 2013 than DT did. We were getting top 25 votes because of them, not our offense. Our offense was still average to below average nationally in several categories. Our defense was top 20, top 10 in several categories. BUT, I never expected our passing production to go from fairly average, to what-the-heck-do-you-call-that.

  13. After watching some of the 3rd quarter of the spring game, I am impressed with Shanbour's ability to run the read-option. He really sells it and makes quick accurate passes(or at least one I saw). Chumley looks like an NFL quarterback, if we could just get someone to teach him how to play the position. I think McNulty's passes lack the velocity needed to be effective at the FBS level. I can't think of one other starting qb we've had over the last ten years that I would like McNulty to start over, and that includes Chase Baine. Oh, and I think Means has a good amount of potential. I'd put Williams, Means, Shanbour as my 123 after the limited snaps I saw.

  14. Yep. And the defense didn't alter or adapt to any of the playcalling not to mention that I didn't see a blitz the entire day. **It is extremely difficult to play in the secondary in these types of scrimmages.

  15. The only extra consideration here is his child. If he's skipping out on extra film sessions late at night to go care for his kid, then he's making the right choice; McCarney or any other coach be damned. If he's skipping out on extra film sessions late at night so he can go party/hang out, then carry on.

  16. Officially a remodel per Dr. Smatresk. No way to get approval for new construction through the state. In fact, I mentioned that I thought it was a remodel and Dr. Smatresk replied that indeed it was. Same thing happened at OSU when I was a grad student there...the new Sereteen Performing Arts Center was classified as a remodel as the state would not approve new construction at the time (1970-1972). They tore the old building down to one wall and a bit of foundation and built the new beautiful performing arts center around that standing wall. Quite a remodel, huh? UNT Student Union is the exact same situation. Official remodel. Ha! Do we call that creativeness or gaming the system? Well, we call it whatever it takes to get the job done. The place is absolutely beautiful. Cannot wait to see the finished product.

  17. Call me a conspiracy theorist with a tin foil hat but I see it this way. Consider this my online stroke moment(Dave Barnett migraine moment). Mac is going to make McNulty the starter. Coach Mac has done everything he could to allow his buddy's son leave his mark as a college quarterback(at the only place he had a chance in hell of seeing the field at the D1 level). What other school in FBS history would've put in a true freshman quarterback with ZERO other FBS offers in a goalline set to score the first touchdown in the history of its brand new stadium? Derek Thompson was better than most give him credit for. If he weren't an upperclassman and not quite as good, McNulty would've started the 2012 season. I think Mac knows that Damarcus Smith will not qualify but had to sign a talented qb to make it look like he attempted to improve the qb situation. When Smith doesn't qualify in the fall, Mac will say that he hadn't planned on that and will have to go with the number 1 he trusts in senior Andrew McNulty. Dajon Williams will not rise above #3 on the depth chart during the 2015 season unless injuries require it. With Josh Greer between McNulty and Williams, Mac knows people won't be begging for McNulty to be benched in favor of Greer. The 2016 will be the season to look forward to, McNulty will be gone and I wouldn't be terribly surprised if McCarney follows him after setting his buddy's kid up with the best college legacy he possible could. 2016 without McNulty will allow for a true, unbiased, quarterback competition. Williams will likely win the competition with Means as his backup. We will have offensive production in 2016 as good or better than we did in 2012. We will win conference and go bowling in 2016. We just have to ride out McNulty's senior season. If anyone besides McNulty (and he is healthy) starts the SMU game I will be "head sewn to the carpet" shocked. If it goes the way I expect, I will give up on the 2015 season. Chad Morris is not June Jones. Morris will actually understand the importance of this game to the fans. Jones just didn't care. I don't want to be embarrassed in front of their a-hole fans just because McCarney wants to give his adopted son the title of starting D1 quarterback.

  20. Edit: He got offers to play football at some midwest Big10 schools, but instead opted to play basketball at the JC level before transferring to UNT. Guessing that he didn't even register as someone that would be interested in playing football at UNT, considering that he turned down Big10 football to play JC basketball. TLDR; do your research.

  24. Probably never see me at a women's game. That is correct. I don't enjoy watching women's bball. More power to those that do. You may see me at one men's home game next year. Maybe more if I'm entertained at the first game I go to. I think the odds of that are slight. Hard to love something that refuses to love itself. You will probably see a lot more of me in 2016. With a new men's head coach in place, I will probably be more curious about the program. But, then again, maybe not.

  25. I respect Coach Walsh's opinion, but I would also imagine he would not have thought our other young scholarship QBs were D1 guys either (Means or Chumley). Means completed just 49% of his passes as a high school senior, so I doubt he could've played for Walsh and it could've been the same thing where Walsh encouraged Means to move to tight end. There's no doubt in my mind that Walsh wouldn't have thought Chumley was a D1 QB either, because he isn't. Our starting QB didn't have any other D1 offers, and wasn't really even close to any others. Hell, even Dajon only had one other offer, and it was from an FCS school in Montana. It's absurd to me that a kid talented enough to get offers to play quarterback (all Dillman's offers were as a QB, not any other position) at schools like Florida State, Auburn, Nebraska, Tennessee, Clemson, etc could never be hoped to be developed to the point where he could compete with the type of QBs we have. I understand Dillman is a steal at tight end, and could contribute from Day 1. I just think with his work ethic, obvious talent, all of his eligibility and redshirt remaining to develop, and our dire situation with the future of our quarterback position that he could easily see the field. Keep in mind, here's another QB who was never going to see the field at Guyer and transferred out after not being able to beat out Shawn Robinson. http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-David-Moore-164601 David Moore, with 17 FBS offers. Anyways, my stance on Dillman hasn't changed, but I won't be too upset about him not being given a chance if we can find a good young QB this class. Because we really, really need one.

Props to Mac for being loyal to us when all these P5 schools are knocking down his door looking for his brilliant and amazing services. That's some good kool-aid they serve on Bonnie Brae.

  30. Ummmm.... I take it that you did not play high school or college sports... This is college football. Not peewee. The university is forking out close to $60,000 for this guy to get an education and play football. This is A JOB. The coaches are the boss. That's how this whole coach and player thing works. You do what you're told and you don't whine or throw a temper tantrum because stuff didn't go your way. You do this or you get the hell out. If you aren't mentally tough enough to be able to take criticism or a knock to your ego then what makes you think that said person would be a candidate to lead a 100 other grown ass men? No one is going to hold your hand or stroke your ego. There are a lot of other athletes on that team that are not getting a lot of playing time but still show up to practices, film, tutoring, film, practice...and get their ass kicked every freaking day without a single negative word. YOU ASK ANY COACH. The coachable player. ALWAYS. In a team sport- Who do you choose ? The coachable guy or the guy that is more interested in serving himself than his teammates. If this was track - I would say DW all the way. Being that there are 100 other guys on the team- coaches are going to pick a guy that does his job to the best of his ability and does everything he can to improve the team. Andrew McNulty May not be the most talented quarterback on the roster but he is most certainly the one who puts the team before himself. And any member of a team always chooses that guy to follow. But in the spirit of this thread... If maturity means absolutely nothing - I pick Connor Means. He has done just as well if not better in a lot of cases than any other quarterback that we've seen so far. We are probably not going to win conference this year. But look at the offensive players that we have coming up. Willy Ivery, Tee Goree, Jeff Wilson, Turner Smiley...... Put the freshman QB in there to develop and give him the experience that we need in order to develop a bad ass group in the next year or two. And if someone better comes along who meets all of the criteria in order to lead an offense better - then put him in.

  31. It's also incorrect (lazy?) reporting to say "2,400 students have signed the petition" when if you look at the comments on the petition some people say they are alumni of UNT. The number of students is likely a significant number of the signatures but it is not all encompassing.

  33. Sure there were a few missed assignments, but you can't judge on highlights alone. I mean was there really 8 mins of highlights from that game anyways? When you combine both the 1st & 2nd defensive units you should be able to piece together a decent unit. Not a 2013 unit, but possibly better than last year. I don't envision a star studded D, but rather 11 guys with equal talent who combined together could make for a good D. It's gonna take all the pieces functioning together though. Because there isn't a Zach Orr, Akunne, or Trice to save someone's missed assignment.

  35. So, if I were HC and considering where the team is regarding the QB position, here is exactly what I would do.... I would request that Mr. Williams report to my office for a little one on one chat. I would clearly explain to him how I felt that he was clearly the most athletically gifted QB currently on the roster and the QB with the most upside. I would then clearly and slowly explain how very disappointed I was in his commitment to getting better and being committed to being number one. I would outline what I expected him to accomplish between now and the start of fall practice including off season work outs, film study, playbook study, etc., etc. I would then explain that the starting job would be wide open if he accomplishes the established off-season goals. Then...I would clearly explain to him that if he should decide not to do all he could to reach those goals that I would not be renewing his scholarship and that I would be happy to assist him in finding a new team and college for which to play. Because if he was not willing to do what it takes to be number one that there is no place on the roster for him or anyone with the same attitude/perspective. I would explain that having potential is worthless if it is not realized and that right now all he is is "potential". I would offer any help that he feels he might need to develop that potential, but I would also make it perfectly clear that this was on him and that no other person was responsible for his attitude and "want to". In closing I would explain that this was his last opportunity and it was his to either accept and succeed or continue on his same path and be playing elsewhere. That's it. Very frustrating to have such wasted potential, but there is still time. So, if I am head coach, that is exactly what I would do. And, I would hope he accepts the challenge to be number one. If not UNT would have an open scholarship available to use on someone who does want to do all it takes to be successful. And, I wouldn't look back. Cannot waste time or scholarships on "potential" unrealized. Unless, Dajon takes the hint or Mr. Smith is indeed the real deal come fall, I would be starting Little Mac with Connor Means waiting in the wings.

    1 point
  40. Firstly, I think you mean "flack" - One "catches flack" and then asks to be "cut some slack", but I digress. Protecting AM is nonsense. And I don't think it's so much about knowing the playbook as it is the other things that DW seemingly has failed to do. You can't let a kid dictate what he will or will not do no matter if he is the second coming of Tom Brady. You do that and you quickly risk anarchy within your team. As an example there was a game last season in which DW refused to wear a headset during the second half and send in signals. Refused. I can't imagine any coach rewarding that kind of behavior no matter how good a player is. When coaches talk about maturity etc it's things such as the above that I think they are talking about. And until DW buys in completely Id wager his role is limited.

  41. It doesn't matter--McNulty is Mac's guy, so he will start. End of story. It sucks, but there's nothing we can do about it. Yeah, Dajon is probably the best QB on the team, but he doesn't have Mac's trust--at all. With coaches like McCarney, once trust is broken, its almost impossible to get it back together. That old-school thought process is just very different from today's laid-back, more hip coaches. For example, I doubt very seriously that Andrew McNulty would start over Dajon Williams in Lubbock for Kliff Kingsbury or at SMU with Chad Morris. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, either, as I think Kingsbury is in waaaayyyy over his head at tech and Morris will find out that SMU is just a cemetary for coaches to go and try to lead that program back up. But to old school coaches like McCarney, George O'Leary, Dennis Franchione, or Larry Coker, they aren't letting the leash get to far ahead of the dog...Unfortunately, of all those listed, Mac's offense is like Dickey's was--pretty much as boring as hell to watch and only effective with a strong defense and a strong running game. For those two coaches, the best QB you can get is a solid busdriver. Hall was that for Dickey, while Derek Thompson morphed into that in his senior year for McCarney. Other than that, giving Andrew Smith some sway since he passed away before we truly could see his skill set on the field as an upper classman, our best QBs here since we moved up to FBS in 1995 were Vizza, who got the $hit beat out of him becasue of a porous line and terrible gameplan, and Woody WIlson, who got all of about one game to show off his skills as a great freelance QB and beat SMU only to get yanked by Dickey for too much freelance in his mundane offense that managed to win a whopping 5 games after Hall graduated. Everyone else has basically gone from meh to suck in the last 20 years here.

  42. He wasn't 2 bc he had 2 terrible turnovers in the scrimmage last week and green didn't. But I don't think that was deserving of him being bumped down to 4.. I know why he was bc they didn't want him running with the 1st team 0 and shredding the 2nd team defense, bc he sure had no problem vs the 1st team D. He held the ball a tad to long bc he had 2 freshman receivers who are adjusting to d1 speed, a decent TE, and a 3rd receiver Daniel khan good but not elite. That coupled with the atrocious LT play on pass blocking I though he did more than carry himself and his team. He threw strikes and made correct reads on the ZR

  43. President Obama is set to be the graduation Commencement speaker on May 8th at Soth Dakota's Lake Area Technical Institute (a local community college). Will the students there have a tad more class than to start a lazy man's on-line petition in protest? Will students contend they will "walk out" on the President? Or, might they set up an alternative commencement address by someone who believes in "conversion theory"? Time will tell...time will tell.

  46. The discontent from the students is from a very very small %. If only 2200 people (not necessarly students) signed an on-line petition, that tells you how few people are really upset about it. Are these same people going to get bent out of shape when the CEO of the company they work for has a different opinion than them? Are they going to cry when there boss says something they don't like? The real world is NOT going to bend over and cater to these people, I totally don't understand why they think a university will.
