  1. Did you just pull off the elusive "douche bag/refers to self in third person" double?!? Can the mods confirm if this is a first in GMG history?!? AMAZING HAPPENS HERE

  2. This isn't something Wisconsin does. Their last 4 classes have been 19, 12, 19, and 26. Now Alabama, yes, they do that. Throw out offers to every kid out there but they aren't commitable offers. And almost every school dips into Texas for recruits, why wouldn't they dip into one of the top 3 states for talent. I can guarantee Wisky isn't going to fill their class with kids from their own state. They wanted Chris, he felt the love, went there, loved it and committed. I'm happy for them both.

  3. Not all offers are committable. The coaches signed off on Chris' commitment, so it obviously was. They don't convert these commits to walkons. Fine me one example. I can find you an example of the contrary. They put former walkon Jared Abbrederis on scholarship after a year of busting his butt on the scout team and he ended up getting drafted by the Packers this year. http://www.uwbadgers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/abbrederis_jared00.html And then there's this guy, who technically came in as a walkon after transferring in from Central Michigan. http://www.uwbadgers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/watt_jj00.html There is not a set number of exactly 5 power conference programs, and there is no such thing as "bully recruiting." You just made it up. Ben, please just stop acting like you know what you're talking about. It's one thing when you do it on meaningless topics, but this is disrespectful to Wisconsin, Chris, and the Orr family. Not to mention it makes our fan base look incredibly bitter.

  4. Chris Orr is no where near the player Zach Orr is/was. Wisconsin is probably up to 20 offers to Dallas area kids. Most have been head scratchers. Good luck to the young man. I've never seen this many high major offers ever to so many area kids. The state typically averages about 350 D1 signees annually with DFW leading the pact. We should shatter the average this year.

  5. May all of your kids be just as crazy about UNT fooball as you. Take your day, you deserve it.

  6. It will be a challenge for us but, I think we can beat them by more than that.

  7. Let's not kid ourselves, Wisconsin averages 80,000 + at their games and the entire state supports that team. Madison is a beautiful city and their football games look like a blast. Can't fault him at all for this decision

  10. No research involved. Just pulled those two off the top of my head. You made an accusation that Wisconsin gets kids to commit early then bullies them to walkon. My examples were off the top of my head, but you can do some research and try to find examples of that. If not, you're just making a baseless claim. Grayshirting happens. But these coaches aren't going to convince Chris to walkon. Nor is that a routine Wisconsin practices. Any kid talented enough to get a Wisconsin offer will have other options if Wisconsin wants them to walkon. Chris is no different. I follow recruiting very closely on the national level and especially UNT. If I got bitter everytime a kid picked a higher-profile school over UNT, I wouldn't be able to do this.

  11. http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/06/unt-on-verge-of-picking-up-second-commitment.html/ Looks like Brooks is about to be commit #2 for 2015. Beating out La Tech, and recently SFA (offered about a week ago). La Tech has been doing great in recruiting. Beating them out for East Texas kids is huge going forward IMO.

  12. Yep. Not the same personnel, but same concept was last year at UGA. We held THE best RB when healthy to his lowest output of yards last year when he played a full game. He rushed for 102 yards on 19 carries. That's pretty damn good. Granted their QB, which is a multiple SEC record holder, picked us apart for almost 500 yards.

  13. I think people overlook the possibility that neither Nick nor Chris wanted to play in Zach's considerable shadow at UNT, especially for Chris, who plays the exact same position. Still early, and that's a long way from home.

  14. They were in the Rose Bowl in 2011 as well. Wisky is consistently a top 25 team, typically ending up with 9 or 10 wins. So they're a pretty solid team, a great school, in a city that's very similar to Austin just colder, with an incredible fan base. So there is no surprise to have him end up there.

  15. By the sounds of it you'd think you all we're just peachy with S-Belt other than ULM. Happy to not have UL_ and would have preferred to have no F_U pick 'em in CUSA.

  16. I somehow have a feeling that he may not have been assured of a scholarship yet and may have taken the sure thing. But, Eastern Michigan? More people attend the Hebron games than Eastern Michigan's. You have the best and worst attendance in the FBS sitting a few miles apart.

  17. If the line is 21 it's only because Vegas is trying to drive up the action. This is not a game where we stay within 21. The reasons we stayed close to Georgia (D-Linemen, Chancellor and Trice on special teams) are gone. They will run for a LOT of yards and play action will be there all day.

  19. Or is it ridiculous that people on here are expecting an unproven QB (pick one, doesn't matter) to be better (some think much better) than the 3 year, bowl MVP QB that just graduated? Sometimes you need to step away from homerism and take an honest look at the situation. We are excited UT may be starting a true freshman at QB, but if that same freshman had chosen UNT, we would all be clamoring for him to start and talking about how he was going to lead us to victory (some would even say double digit victory). I'll be in Austin hoping for the best, but if we manage to keep it less than a 24 point UT victory, manage to slow their running game with good front 7 play, and manage to get fair production from the QB position with 2 or less turnovers by the QB, I'll be estatic. I think that will bode well for conference play.

  20. I had never heard that there was pressure on Noll to draft Hanratty in the 1st round. Pretty silly, considering they picked him up in the 2nd round, anyway. Noll was unquestionably one of the all-time greats among NFL coaches. R.I.P.

  21. I put out recruiting tiers a few months ago. Not many states have to deal with many levels like recruiting in Texas. Its not a good comparision. In Florida, you have fsu, Miami, and Florida. If they havent gotten in touch with you, you know where you stand. In Texas you have lsu, UT, am, ou at the top. You still have tech, Baylor, osu, tcu, as a strong second tier. These schools are some kid's dream school and you can get a good recruit to commit early to these schools. To get 3 stars (or higher) to commit and not wait for bigger conference schools, UNT has to become a recruits favorite school. That is going to take some time. A few winning seasons, and UNT can become a second tier school to Denton area athletes.

  23. Come on Harry! There were far more depressing threads after the UTSA debacle. Anyway, since the players are leaving, why not get rid of basketball and expedite baseball? It would make title 9 compliance easy. Baseball is a blast to watch. We could buy really cool caps too. They could use the old stadium for graduations and women's bball of course. Anyway, I'm clearly joking but I do want baseball ASAP. I hit some basketball games last year and it was really sad to attend. High Schools have better attendance. My 5 year old daughter even asked where all the people were. I felt bad for the cheerleaders as well as the players.

  24. McCain is a big example of why people shouldn't be allowed to make politics a career. Get in, serve your County/State/County/City and get out.

  26. McCain is so busy trying to get the media to love him, he forgets what he has said. Sad, really.

  27. McCain is an idiot. But I fail to see how that proves all politicians are hypocrites. I do agree that most of them are less than perfectly honest, and that Congress once again needs to become a part-time occupation.

  30. No, you are twisting words that I said. What the hell is wrong with you folks. I didn't say that anyone bullies anyone on an individual basis. I didn't say that convincing commits to walk-on is a common occurrence as you are insinuating, but let's not fool each other and act like that doesn't happen. And also I have completely almost stopped talking about Wisconsin. I have been speaking now P5 in general. Also, you have those url's saved in your head? Or on your desktop? Or did you have to. Look. Them. Up? And lastly, Billy, let's not act like you're the only one that follows recruiting closely.

  31. Ok, that's who they signed, how many offers were thrown out on the table? 60-70-80? How many commits did they convert to walk-ons? How many times did they jump on a recruits board that was flooded with G5's? Wisconsin does it. A number of signees does not mean they don't do it. All consistently successful P5's do it. Does Wisconsin honor their 4 yr commitment to the player if injury occurs? Doubtful. Last I checked only 5 P5 schools do that and Wisconsin wasn't one of them. How often do players leave the program from "personal" or "medical" reasons? AKA being cut.

  33. I still don't understand why CUSA picked up ODU and Charlotte, but left LLAF in the belt? Were they invited and turned it down or something? Or was an invite never extended? If not, this is a mistake.

  35. How do we lose this kid to Eastern Michigan? Eastern Michigan????? I really hope that we withdrew the offer. If we were pursuing this kid and lost out to Eastern freaking Michigan, it would make me very concerned for this class going forward.

  37. Wth. How is this happening?!? This is what frustrates me and legitimately concerns me about this coaching staff. If we want to be a contender the recruiting game has to elevate, and I am not seeing it happen with this staff in year 4. Most highly touted recruits in 4 years have been Goree and the Oklahoma kicker. I don't get it. It doesn't make sense. 20 consecutive years of losing wouldn't be a justified excuse for EMU to come into our backyard and take a recruit we are after. The theme every year is that this staff can't recruit. No one has came out and flat said that they can't, but it's starting to really seem that way.

  38. I know, you would think after keeping tabs on the Mean Green program for 4 years they would take seriously consideration in North Texas. Kids want that fame, they want that bragging right of "I signed P5." My brother was a baseball recruit few years ago out of Arkansas and he said that's just the way it is. It's not even about thinking about the entirety of your options, it's about committing/signing with P5 D1, and then saying, "see, I told you so."

  39. Yeah, but I think that he is truly a victim of bully recruiting. Whatever I don't care. Hopefully it works out for him.

  40. Bully recruiting happens. Over-signing, loopholes, borderline cheating, etc. etc. etc. For you to tell me it doesn't exist shows your ignorance to it. And yes, obviously schools put walk-ons on scholarship. Thanks for the extensive research though. It's an epidemic among primarily the P5. And hell yeah I'm bitter about it. Guy is a great player that I thought we had a semi-good chance of landing. Whoever says they aren't a little bitter about this is a liar. My bad for being passionate about this program and showing my bitterness.

  41. I'm pretty sure Ben Gooding has created "bully recruiting" in his head. A quick google search will show you that nobody in the history of the internet has ever used that term before. Sure there's oversigning which has been a problem but the outcome of that has nothing to do with what Ben Gooding describes (converting commits to walkons). Plus -- as pointed out earlier -- Wisconsin hasn't participated in oversigning.
    -1 points
  42. I am, kind of. Not really surprised that he didn't choose UNT. A little surprised he chose Wisconsin. One of the best seasons Wisconsin has had in recent memory they got touched up by G5 TCU at the Rose Bowl. And I don't see them even sniffing the Rose Bowl in the foreseeable future. Unless they got another R. Wilson transferring in?
    -4 points
  43. OK. If you want to turn a blind eye to it then that's on you. The corruption in college football is unparalleled, except to maybe the White House. And if you read the entirety of my posts you would see that I mentioned over-signing as the underlying theme to all of this, douche bag. So it actually has everything to do with what Ben Gooding is describing.
