  3. Hi Rick, I'd really like to understand why you believe climate change science is a hoax. Is it because you are in posession of better data? Or better analyses? Skepticism is good. There's nothing wrong with keeping an open mind & refusing to buy unproven conclusions. But your doubt should be tentative & you should be willing to consider that maybe the other guy is right. Otherwise you're basing your arguments on ideology - not science. Keep green!

  4. OK, I win. My first year at North Texas there was no UB/Student Union. One did open the following year, however, where the Administration Building now stands and we thought we were in heaven. It had a huge lounge called the Howdy Room where there were dances, post office, two places to eat, trophy room, and I believe the bookstore. There was a slab out back for dancing, roller skating, ROTC ceremonies, etc. We had concerts by the One O'Clock Lab Band and other groups. There were pre-game pep rallies on the front steps. It certainly wasn't as elegant but much homier than its successor.

  5. Meh. I'll be watching the Olympics. They only occur every 4 years. Benford beatings occur every week.

  7. Bill, I could be confused. I spent 1951-54 in the service and came back to finish in 1957 so I had two stints at NT. We definitely had bands play during the day at times and I'm reasonably certain that they were called lab bands (although maybe not the One O'Clock). Fesser Graham''s band (The Aces of Collegeland) only played the Saturday Night Stage Show and special occasions as I recall but the day group could've been some of those band members. I've had some great and memorable experiences and could be the only alum to have attended the last class of NTSTC as a freshman and the last class of NTSC, from which I graduated. I did not attend the last game at old Memorial Stadium but I did get to attend the first game at Fouts because I was home on leave. And, of course, I attended the last game at Fouts. I'm definitely not the only one to do that but our ranks are thinning.

  8. Had a little run in last night with a UNT student at sports authority. So if you haven't been to sports authority in Denton lately UNT athletics is up to one entire rack of clothing wear! (still disappointing) So we were checking out and the cashier looked of collegiate age so i made a simple statement of "you think there will ever be a larger selection of UNT apparel" He came back with the statement "NEVER they are terrible." I then made a statement that UNT won the Heart of Dallas bowl this year. His comeback was well OU won the Sugar Bowl. All i said was Apple and Oranges. So i calculated that obviously he was not a UNT student. So i attempted to try and brighten the mood and say atleast there is not a Texas Tech selection (trying to find something maybe we agree on). He then said yeah but atleast there is a large selection of OU merchandise. So i then calculated he went to OU. So i asked him if he graduated from OU. He response was "no i go to UNT." WHAT THE HELL so i was immediately angry and long story short. I told him he can take HIS SOONER a$$ back to Oklahoma.

  14. Rick, I don't think these ebbs & flows of weather counteract the gradual changes seen at a higher level. Yes it's cold in the U.S. right now, but I have a friend in Germany who says their winter was unusually warm this year and they've had much less snow than they normally do. Are we to assume that means the world is going to melt in 5 years?

  21. Nice write up, but they couldn't find a better picture? It's hard to believe they even got a picture from the bowl game with an empty section in the background. Harder still that they couldn't find another photo that was more reflective of the atmosphere that day.

  22. Pointless. Benford needs better results. He knows it, everyone knows it. A JJ loss in College Station tells me nothing.

  24. I don't care if we recruit the second coming of Michael Jordan to NT, if you don't qualify academically and don't play one second for NT, I don't see how you can say you recruited a great player. All you really recruited was potential. Remember they are a student first and an athlete second. Win in the classroom, then win on the court/field.

  26. In the early 60's at NTSC, there was dancing on the slab behind the UB. The music was played by the Fesser and His Aces. Most important, can you still get the coffee cake at the current Union?

  28. I have a Benford signed basketball. I like the ball itself more than the autograph. Side note: kind of irked me that he signed it "Coach Benford" instead of "Tony Benford".

  29. Grand, I have to respectfully disagree with you regarding the talent he inherited and what he recruited. Now, many of his guys didn't make it to Denton, but I think he was the best recruiter I think we have had since I've followed the program. To help recruit these guys, he had to sell them on the schedule. If you remember, he even promised recruits that they would be playing in CUSA before their senior year. His recruiting did tail off the last year or two. Didn't list any names but I will be happy to to help refresh your memory.

  31. They laughed that we kept him (Trilli) for 4 years. They also mentioned that in the history of college football Dodge's stretch was 5 better than the worst coaching stretch in CFB history. So happy to have those days behind us and to have learned from our mistakes...

  32. New Union?! I was at NTSU when they were building the current one which was then state of the art.
    1 point
  33. The things you have to remember about Trilli are that he did not inherit the team that Benford did and played a much more difficult schedule in his first couple of years. He played the most difficult oc schedule in the nation with a very young team. NT cancelled all games with old Southland teams and scheduled no non-division 1 teams and seldom played any OC home games. I think what Trilli did to the team he inherited was as bad as anything any coach has ever done at NT. He booted everybody out but a couple of players after they played as hard as any team for him in the first year. Trilli unlike Benford had been a successful coach at a lower level. It was Trilli's fault, but he apparently bought in to the Helwig idea of magically transforming the team to an elite one by playing only the best. Despite what many seem to think, there wasn't a lot of talent on those early Trilli's teams. Chris Davis who was injured during his early career was an exceptional player, but there was no one close to him other than Erskin; who at 6'4 played the 4. After Trilli's start; he almost literally couldn't give scholarships away and even with a greatly weakened schedule; there was no way he could have ever been successful. Trilli was a better offensive coach and Benford much better on the defensive end, but debating who was the worse is fruitless. Both should have been gone much earlier and I hope Benford is not allowed to waste more years that NT could use to build a program.

  34. Neither are good head coaches. It's pretty hard to compare records for reasons already mentioned above (ie: Trilli's teams ALWAYS had their confidence blown 5-7 games into the season as they played nothing but P5 schools in OOC; meanwhile Benford just played the single easiest OOC schedule ever assembled---ok, maybe a slight stretch). I propose ranking them on totally arbitrary factors that may or may not be related to basketball. It's the only fair way! Green Seats vs Jumbo Tron: Advantage Trilli Public speaker savant vs Skips the post game presser: Advantage Benford Hair! vs closet full of suits: Advantage Trilli 90 feet of NO defense vs Andrew's 2-3 zone: Advantage Benford 74 point loss to Maryland vs Lost to Div3 Ala-Huntsville: Advantage Trilli Final Tally: Trilli: 3 - Benford 2 So there you have it. Trilli was clearly worse than Benford!

  35. You absolutely know that Trilli can't coach when he had his sorry record with these players... Chris Davis Deginald Erskin Kenneth Mangrum Jason Miller Calvin Williams And, with decent coaching you could've added D.J. Tennell, Wes Allen, and Unjel Masters at the least.

  36. So...ummm...has the firing of Benford happened yet?
    1 point
  37. The first three seasons of the Trilli had an OOC schedule of: 97-98: @ Iowa @ Alabama Texas @ NC State @Oklahoma St. @ UAB @ TCU @ UALR @Oklahoma @ Georgia Tech 98-99: @Texas A&M Texas Tech @TCU @Iowa St. Princeton @Tulsa Wyoming @ LA Tech @Maryland @Arkansas 99-00: LA Tech @ Oklahoma St. Texas A&M @Texas Tech UL Lafayette Indiana St. Buffalo @Baylor Tulsa @TCU @Wyoming Got a little better in year 4, but still brutal: 00-01: @Tulsa @Texas A&M Oklahoma St. @ Missouri St. A&M-CC @Arkansas @Oklahoma @Alabama A&M-Kingsville Baylor I don't think any NT team could have fared well with those type of schedules, but Captain Butt-Cut sucked it in conference play as well. I would have to say he is still the worst.

  38. No, and Benford has managed to schedule enough NAIA teams and eek out wins against them to avoid the top 5, IMO. Lets hope we care enough about the basketball program to make a change at season's end.

  41. Hard to believe we have two of the top five considering the string of Ranger mangers they had in the 70's and 80's.

  42. Great, How about firing a basketball coach that isn't succeeding. Better yet, how about never hiring that career assistant that had interviewed for other head coaching jobs without success (now we know why). How about hiring a known coaching commodity named Fran Fracilla, who was salivating for the job, yet apparently just cost too much. Or you can choose to believe that Benford beat him out fair and square in the interview process. Highly doubtful.
